AS IT marks this year's Human Rigth's Day on Wednesday, Negros Occidental-based labor group General Alliance of Workers Associations (Gawa) asserted that in a democratic state, the individual enjoys certain rights that cannot be modified or taken away by the lawmaking body.
These rights are guaranted because of the belief in the inherent dignity and worth of every human person, its secretary general Wennie Sancho said.
Sancho said the value accorded to human dignity is measured by the extent of respect for human rights.
"Unfortunately, gross and blatant violations of human rights goes unabated today all over the world, by the most cruel and powerful oppressors who are dead to the claims of human affection and knew no rules but to extend their power at the expense of human rights violations," he added.
