India stands for rights of Tamil people within a united Sri Lanka: Jaishankar’s message to Colombo

External Affairs Minister of India Dr. S. Jaishankar made a strong pitch for Tamil reconciliation during his three-day visit to Colombo. This is his first foreign travel of 2021 which shows the importance New Delhi attaches to this bilateral relationship.
Hours after calling on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, bilateral talks were held between him and Foreign Minister Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka Dinesh Gunawardena.
Speaking of the "longstanding" support for the reconciliation process and "inclusive" political outlook that encourages "ethnic harmony", addressing a joint press conference with Dinesh Gunawardena, Jaishankar said, "It is in Sri Lanka's own interest that the expectations of the Tamil people for equality, justice, peace and dignity within a united Sri Lanka are fulfilled. That applies equally to the commitments made by the Sri Lankan government on meaningful devolution, including the 13th Amendment to the Constitution."
