by Lisa Howard
April 19, 2021
In January 2020, Nam Tran and his colleagues in the UC Davis Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine were scaling up testing platforms for seasonal influenza and the common cold.
The UC Davis Health Specialty Testing Center Lab team developed COVID-19 testing capable of performing more than 1,000 tests per day.
Tran is a professor of clinical pathology at the UC Davis School of Medicine. He was following reports out of China about a mysterious new respiratory virus, SARS-CoV-2. Not much was known at the time about how the novel coronavirus spread or what the mortality rate was.

The rally in ASX copper shares could extend for a few more months as experts believe the metal is heading to fresh 10-year highs.
That’s not only great news for ASX copper producers, but there’s another less obvious group of ASX shares that look set to ride this uptrend. I’ll touch on that more later.
Why copper prices could set new record highs
The benchmark copper price on the London Metal Exchange jumped 1.8% to US$9,379.50 a tonne on Monday night.

Vancouver man has VPD hate crime forms translated into 8 languages

VANCOUVER --
After struggling to report a hate crime against him, Steven Ngo has taken matters into his own hands.
Last week, Ngo spoke out about the difficulty he experienced trying to contact the Vancouver Police Department after a driver shouted a racial slur and threw garbage at him at an intersection. He told CTV News he was put on hold for more than 30 minutes while trying to report the incident by phone, and that when he searched online for a form to fill out, they were only available in traditional and simplified Chinese.
But Ngo said the response he's received since sharing his story has been "remarkable." He has since taken it upon himself to launch a crowd-source initiative to translate the Vancouver Police Department's hate crime forms into eight Asian languages.

Laschet Grabs Lifeline in Fight to Succeed Merkel in Germany

Arne Delfs
(Bloomberg) -- Armin Laschet won a vote among the leadership of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union in the early hours of Tuesday to revive his faltering bid to succeed her as chancellor.
Laschet, the head of the CDU, won the backing of 31 out of 46 members of his party’s top committee in a ballot to determine who should lead the center-right bloc into September’s national election, according to a person familiar with the outcome.
His rival, Bavarian State Premier Markus Soeder, won just nine votes with six abstentions, a result that may give 60-year-old Laschet the edge in their contest. While Laschet has lost significant support since the committee gave him unanimous backing a week ago, Soeder said on Monday that he would accept a clear CDU vote in favor of Laschet.

Navigating Indian Defense Outreach with the Gulf

Brief Analysis
As India seeks to grow in its self-reliance, developing more balanced relations with the Gulf will strengthen ties while helping to balance against Chinese influence in the region.
In May 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India would pursue
Atmanirbhar Bharat, or the ‘self reliant India’ initiative—a call for India to boost its independence in meeting its national security requirements and defense manufacturing. In exploring this new initiative, India should extend the tenants of the
Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative to its relations with the Gulf. Initial steps such as the Indian army chief’s unprecedented visit to Saudi Arabia and the UAE are necessary and important in this regard, but Indian-Gulf relations must be further developed and balanced. This development should focus on establishing greater Indian independence while deepening regional ties, all while remaining mindful of concurrent Chinese efforts in the region.

Lawyer says VPD hate crime reporting system flawed after racist incident

A Vancouver lawyer is shedding light on the barriers people face when attempting to report a hate crime in the city.
Steven Ngo was stopped at a red light on April 15 when he thought he heard someone in the car next to him yell a racial slur.
When he rolled down his window to confirm his suspicions, two white men yelled the same slur at him before hurling garbage at his car and speeding away.
“I was shocked. I was appalled that something overtly racist like this would happen. I was born in Vancouver, I grew up in this city,” Ngo told Daily Hive.

The Toyota BZ4X Concept Is The Future Of Electric SUV Design

Photo: Toyota
Toyota wants to return to form. It wants to be at the forefront of electrification once more and relive its days as the de facto segment leader. The carmaker is no longer targeting the hybrid segment; it now wants to lead in BEVs and the new bZ series is how it plans to do so.
Toyota has debuted the first car in that series at the Shanghai Auto Show, the bZ4X concept. The company did not provided many details for the bZX4 yet, so we don’t know its range, output figures or cost. Those details will be available as we near the worldwide release of the production bZX4, which Toyota plans for the middle of 2022. The first thing that sticks out to me is how utterly normal the concept looks, and this is a very good thing:

Blinken warns US is falling behind China in race to capitalize on climate opportunities
US Secretary of State Tony Blinken said that “coming up short” in efforts to address climate change “will have major repercussions” for US national security and its economy, warning that the country is falling behind China on renewable energy and pushing for greater investment in green technologies.
“Right now, we’re falling behind. China is the largest producer and exporter of solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, and electric vehicles. It holds nearly a third of the world’s renewable energy patents,” Blinken said.
“If we don’t catch up, America will miss the chance to shape the world’s climate future in a way that reflects our interests and values, and we’ll lose out on countless jobs for the American people,” he said.
