Police confirmed a woman died around 5pm yesterday, after being injured in the water - with indications she'd been attacked by a shark.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand's Allan Mundy says they don't have the power to actually close the beach -- that's a decision for the regional or district council.
He syas their primary aim today is the wellbeing of lifeguards involved, and looking at what support can be offered.
