We begin this half hour with a battle against wildfires. 24 major fires burning in five states this morning. Four of them near sacramento, california. Hundreds of families have been forced from their homes. Hundreds of others are ready to go. Abcs Clayton Sandell on this already tough fire season. Reporter an air war. Planes and helicopters knocking back flames in hardtoreach terrain, 45 miles northeast of sacramento burning so hot, you can see it from space. Were hitting it with everything we have. Reporter firefighters are working to protect about 2,000 structures, hundreds of people told to evacuate their homes. We decide to get home, start packing and start loading up the camper. This was always going to be our getaway. Reporter its already been a bad fire season. 5. 6 million acres blackened so far compared to just 1. 6 million acres this time last year. How hot are these flames burning . Its about 1,000 degrees celsius or about 1,800 degrees fahrenheit. Reporter at the federal Fire Sciences lab in montana, they study how wildfires spread but they warn, stopping destructive fires is getting tougher. More people are building hopes in wildfireprone areas and more flames are being put out before they naturally burn off dry trees and brush that can build up. So, that means fires are going to burn longer more intense. Monster fires. Monster fires and fires that do the kind of damage that its very difficult to recover from. Reporter that fire in california still burning out of control and firefighters have a new worry on monday. They expect strong winds that could push flames even closer to homes. Several Straight Days of heavy rain pushed rivers and lakes into neighborhoods, caused flooding from tampa to miami. Some residents were seen fishing in their own front yards. One man joking he always wanted a house where he could fish off the front porch. He had a day for it this time. As for todays weather, floridians can expect more rain. And there will be severe storms for the midwest across to the great plains and even the rockies. Scattered storms in the northeast and the southwest. Phoenix gets up to 108 degrees today. Investigators in louisiana say the deadly attack on a Movie Theater was not a random act. They say the gunman john houser, kept a journal in which he wrote down the theater, the movie and the screening time that he targeted but its not clear why he attacked. Today the two women who died at that theater will be laid to rest. Two of the nine injured remain in the hospital. The desperate search for two teenaged boys who vanished on a fishing trip in florida continues overnight. The 14yearold best friends set off with a lot of experience on the water but few supplies. Its unimaginable for any parent to have to be faced with not knowing where your child is. Reporter the 14yearolds left their home in jupiter, florida, friday morning to go fishing in a nearby inlet, but by midday the duo was text messaging friends and posting on snapchat, saying they were heading to the bahamas, at least 75 miles away. They had no gps on board their boat. Well do anything to get our children back. Reporter the boys last spotted buying 110 of fuel at this marine. Their panicked parents calling authorities, joined by friend and neighbor hall of Famer Joe Namath who has helped the family raising a 100,000 reward for their safe return. Local boaters on the lookout. The discovery more than 150 miles north of where the boys departed consistent with the gulf stream current. The coast guard search area now spanning more than 25,000 square miles with boats and aircraft. It is a race against time to find these boys. We begin with the tragic death of Bobbi Kristina brown, the only daughter of Whitney Houston and bobby brown and the sole heir to her mothers estate. Bobbi kristina was just 22 years old. Of course, shattered by the loss of her superstar mom, and the circumstances surrounding their deaths are eerily similar. We get the very latest now from abcs brandi hitt. Reporter like the second act of a family tragedy, Whitney Houstons daughter has followed her mother in death. 21yearold female in the bathtub, face down. Pds en route. Reporter Bobbi Kristina brown was found unresponsive in the bathtub of her home in this gated community outside atlanta. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors placed her on a ventilator. Later she was moved to a special intensive care unit at another hospital in the city, then to hospice care as her condition deteriorated. Her death too similar to her mothers. Need paramedics. Apparently, ive got a 46yearold female found in the bathroom. Reporter in february of 2012, Whitney Houston was found in a hotel bathtub, where Authorities Say she accidentally drowned. They found a dozen bottles of pills in her suite and determined that cocaine contributed to her death. After houston died, Bobbi Kristina struggled, at one point hospitalized for anxiety. She agreed to star in a reality tv series and addressed rumors of drug and alcohol abuse following her mothers death in an interview with oprah winfrey. Im getting through it, you know . Detectives say they found evidence that john houser carefully planned that deadly attack at the motel where he stayed. They found wigs and glasses that they believe he used as disguises. And more chilling they found a journal in which his intentions were very clear. He made comments that he was coming. It was written down the Movie Theater, the time everything. Trainwreck, 7 15. This morning, Funeral Services are scheduled for both of the victims. Major battles in iraq this morning as Government Forces retake strategic territory from isis. The company has agreed to pay 105 million because of problems and about two dozen recalls. Those involve around 11 million vehicles. In an exclusive interview with abc news, transportation secretary anthony foxx said the way Fiat Chrysler was taking care of recalls is an example of how they should not be done. Theres no way to defend what Fiat Chrysler was doing. And whether it is a matter of comission or omission, the reality is that consumers were not protected in this situation. As part of the deal with the government, the company must offer to buy back more than 500,000 ram pickup trucks from customers. Those trucks have defective steering parts that can cause drivers to lose control. And in baltimore, a tragic end to a night out on the water with friends. Two women were killed when the boat they were in hit a concrete barrier near the key bridge and six others on board were injured. Police say the group was having dinner and drinks before accepting a ride on the boat from a man they just met. They visited several bars before crashing on the way back. Investigators in louisiana say the deadly attack on a Movie Theater was premeditated murder. They say the gunman, john houser, kept a journal in which he wrote down the theater, the movie and the screening time that he targeted. At his motel, they also found wigs and glasses to use as disguises. Today the two women who died in that attack will be laid to rest. Two of the nine injured remain in the hospital. Well, several people hurt well, several people hurt when this swing ride at a kentucky amusement park, well, it did that. It toppled over. Employees and emergency workers had to free the folks that were trapped in the ride. Most of the injuries bumps and bruises. State inspectors will be looking at the ride. This was in bowling green. Theyll take a look at it later today. Well, some big trouble from automaker Fiat Chrysler. Its been hit with a record fine by the government and thats because of its handling of the vehicle recalls. Some owners of around 11 million vehicles didnt even know their cars had been recalled. Abcs david kerley spoke exclusively to transportation secretary anthony foxx about the case. Reporter the government had to go to the expense of these crash tests because Fiat Chrysler refused to share its data, one of nearly two dozen recalls, 11 million cars, the government says chrysler botched. Some jeeps, dodges and chrysler cars still on the road with bad axles, ignition switches electrical problems fixes that didnt work, consumers not notified. Inconsistent, insufficient and inaccurate information given to the government and consumers. Theres no way to defend what Fiat Chrysler was doing. And whether it is a matter of commission or omission, the reality is that consumers were not protected in this situation. Reporter in an exclusive interview, secretary foxx tells us hes slapping the biggest civil fine ever on a carmaker. 70 million in cash, 20 million to fix the problems, and if Fiat Chrysler doesnt perform, it could face another 15 million, potentially a 105 million fine. Was Fiat Chrysler just a bad actor when it comes to recalls . Well, this is a good example how not to do a recall. Reporter Fiat Chrysler says, we accept the resulting consequences with renewed resolve to improve how it handles recalls.
