So, here we are, the owner of headlines salon and spa in sutter county, you are about 40 miles north of sacramento, kristy goldby is the owner. Thank you for joining us. Youre welcome. Thanks for having us. Yeah, so, i did look. I see you guys were voted best salon, crowd favorite a couple of years ago. So, congratulations. And you are open back up. I see you have a mask. I do. But tell me about whether you have that on, are you taking care of a customer right now, what is the way you are going about it to keep yourself safe . I am. Yeah, im just finishing giving a peticure to a client. So, masking is what were doing, i it pulled down to see you can hear me. But we are wearing masks, gloves, asking our clients to wear masks. Protocols in place accordng to our county orders, which is the social distancing of staying six feet apart. So, limited number of Service Providers working, or with a guest in the same proximity and when your clients come to the salon, we ask them to stay outside, to call us when they arrive. They can only enter the building when their Service Provider is ready to start working on them. Kristy, would you be so kind as to spin that computer around, if you could, to show us how the salon looks. Yeah. To see how you are dealing with the clients and the social distancing. That would be great. Yeah, let me flip this around. So, we are in i was in my nail salon. So, this is the outdoor area, so, when clients come in, weve got our signs up, letting them know they need to wear a mask and to call us first and weve got a sanitizing station. Our front desk area, our gills have their masks on, thats michelle. Were disinfecting everything that clients touch. And then were oneonone with clients in a room at a time, so, we actually have two workstations in here but limiting it to one stylist and one client. I see your stylist there in the chair, that client has to wear a mask, as well . Yeah. Yeah. The whole time. Yep. So, weve got people in this room and they might look closer than they are, but were distanced apart, so weve limited the number of people in each room. Sanitizing station in the front of our salon, as well. I was going to say, how does it feel so far . I know youve been open for about a week or so. Hows business . Are people wanting to come back . Well, i can show you our lists and lists and lists of clients, its out of control. Each day, we think were making our way through and weve got more and more clients on a waiting list. So, we opened back up with a handful of Service Providers, there are 17 of us total. Right now, we have five back working, so thats probably been the hardest part, is because the struggle between our country and what the governors are a little bit different. Some of our Service Providers did not want to come back against the governors orders, but we are in compliance with our county order. We are doing everything theyve asked us to do and its like christmas week, and everybody that i know thats in the business will tell you the same thing. Clients are just clamoring to get back into the salon and its its been busy, so, were just trying to keep up. You know what, im reading a lot of stories about people driving even down from Washington State to get to yuba city so they can get these services. Are you getting a lot of out of towners . Are you getting people from the bay area . Were getting calls from every place. Mostly northern california. A lot of just sacramento area, chico, opened up, but initially it was a lot of sacramento and bay area, and so just because, you know, we share those same concerns, as to why some counties are open and others arent. We didnt want to risk people coming in from other counties. So, we have placed people on a waiting list if they are not existing clients. Were certainly trying to get to our existing clients first and then reaching out to those, but we cant get through our clients right now. I see. The pe you are already ce, u services. Were trying to take care of the people that have been in business for us for a long time. My mom is the original owner this is my mom, marsha. Shes been open for 35 years and, you know, weve got weve got a healthy healthy business, so, were just trying to take care of everybody locally first. Were getting a lot of questions from viewers for you, one person wants to know, how do you talk if you could walk us back to the room where one of the hairdressers is cutting, how do they communicate with their clients with their masks on, right . I imagine thats difficult, but they want to try not to talk because then you have the more exchange of the droplets. Yes. It is, i mean, its again, its minimum interaction so, they are coming in, we are either getting Color Service on, clients are leaving with their hair wet. Were trying to do the best we can. Our county has suggested a 30 to 45minute contact time, so, were trying to make sure we get clients in and out as quickly as possible. And the other thing that, you know, i wonder about is, i dont know if you are doing anybodys nails right now, but that puts you in closer distance, if you will, shorter distance from the client, you know, and how do you keep that safe, given that you are only about two feet apart . Yeah. Again, were just doing what, you know, the county has suggested for us and everybody is wearing their masks and, you know, washing hands, which anybody ill show you just whats going on here, anybody in our industry knows that we weve been required to do this, aside from the masking, weve been required to disinfect and sanitize everything that we touch, everything that the client touches, so, anything that cant be disinfected with a hospitalgrade disinfectant gets thrown away or it gets washed. And that is a different procedure than before, in a higher level of cleaning than before . No, its always what the state world has required of us. Weve always been required to throw away anything that you cannot disinfect in a hospitalgrade solution, its a are you doing facials right now . Were doing enzyme treatments and eyebrow waxing. Anything thats less than 15 minutes is what were focused on. Again, were really trying to stay with the protocols that our county has given us, which is a 30minute contac time, so, anything that we can do within 30 minutes, were asking everybody to, you know, keep their masks on and were unfortunately, you know, our state world hasnt given any guidelines, so, if something comes out in phase three and the state board decides to give guidelines that might be different than what were doing, well certainly oblige, you know, go by their rules but they havent given us any guidelines yet. You are going by the 30minute rule, which is interesting, because a lot of service s sometimes take longer were just not doing those services right now. Okay. Yeah. So, when a client if a client is coming in for color, its on the scalp color, which we can get on in 15 minutes, they go outside to process, they sit in their car to process, they come back and rinse them out. If they are getting a haircut, you know, we cut them first, put their color on, they can go home and wash their own color out, but most of the time were just washing them here and sending them out with just a rough blow dry. Yeah, now, i dont think its a county requirement, but are you taking the temperatures of your employees and your customers . We are not. Is that something you considered . We have, and we, you know, we let everybody know, obviously, when were confirming appointments, we let them know what our protocols are, if they dont wear a mask, were not seeing them. And if theyre feeling sick, with anybody sick, were asking them to stay home and reschedule, but were not mostly not taking temperatures, because ive heard from some people in the medical field that those thermometers can be very inaccurate, so, you know, were just asking them to stay home if theyre not feeling well. All right, kristy thank you so much. The owner of headline salon and spa in sutter county. Appreciate the information from you on how youve been trying to keep things as safe as possible, reopening for your customers. Take good care. All right, thank you. Byebye. Byebye. All right, were going to take a short break on the air wh and when we come back, an Infectious Disease expert will be joining us. Were looking fard to this conversation next. We dont take breaks from new vaccines to hydroxychloroquine to new symptoms, theres a whole lot in terms of medical updates since the last time we had a doctor on this show. So, now seems like the perfect time to talk with an Infectious Disease expert. How are you doing, dr. Peter . Thank you for having me on again. Great to have you on. We have so much to talk about. I want to start with the vaccine, or at least the quest for the vaccine. The current frontrunner has success in phase one with human patients, so, should we take that with a grain or salt or should we have high hopes that well have a vaccine by the end of the year . What do you think . Im a little bit hopeful. Actually, i have full glass kind of person in general and the science seems really sound. I think the first phase human studies seem really promising in terms of making the right kind of antibodies and more antibodies than natural infection, too, so i think were kind of on a good track and its much faster than everyone anticipated. Okay. Thats good. Im glad youre optimistic. That gives me a little bit of optimism, as well. How about this one . I think this is taken as good news, that a study out of south korea seems to suggest once youve gotten it and gotten over it, youre no longer infectious to others. Is that right . Yeah, i feel that. I mean, theres actually an earlier study that kind of was a little bit more invisible that showed that when you had eight days of symptoms, you know, even though people continued to swab positive, none of the virus actually grew in a culture, meaning that it was probably dead virus. So, its not surprising that that korean study showed that result. And its hopeful that eve though, you know, after some point of time, people stop transmitting to others once a certain period has passed. What does that suggest, though, about reinfection in terms of you not getting sick again and having that immunity from the antibodies, is that a totally separate issue . I think its a little bit separate. I think that the people who get disease probably are going to be protected, i mean, we know that people develop antibodies, it takes a little bit longer in some people, so, two weeks, three weeks and even more people, so, it just, you need a little bit more time before you kind of go out and expose yourself. Okay. Great. One more from me, before we get to our wonderful viewer questions. Is there a new study that suggests anything about altitude and high altitude, whether that affects the virus . Yeah, so, there was a recent study thats getting some attention, where they compared covid in la paz, bolivia to a more lowland area. La paz is a little bit higher even that mexico city, and looked at tibet, also, and their hypothesis is, when you go to higher elevations, that people tend to have less covid there. I mean, i think in general its an intriguing study, but i wouldnt sort of like believe all of it. The people who live in these highland areas in bolivia are very different. Theyve adapted to certain ways over a long period of time by having lower levels of oxygen, so, it may not be generalizable to us. Plus, theres tons of covid in mexico city, which is, like, super high up. So, its a matter about the people who are high up, rather than just the high up part. Doesnt mean that we should all flock to go to, like, you know, tahoe or somebody. Tahoe, i got you. Other factors that yes. Because remember when you asked me the temperature once, i thought covid really likes people rather than temperature, and i think the same thing about altitude. Okay, great. Wait to get to some viewer questions. Mark miller wants to know, high dr drk si color win and rep december vir, are they good for prevention . If anything is going to be preventive, its going to be the as it is done into different ways. Making an inhaled version, like flu mist or doing an injectable version that can be given to people more easily than the iv version. Its going to be better, it makes more rational sense than a rheumatoid about thy tis drug. Is there a pill version, too, is that possible . A pharmacist that looked at that idea, and i think people are a little bit worried about whether or not you get enough levels, if you take a pill of rep december vir, but i think that would be the best thing, if we could turn it into a pill. Uhhuh. Okay, so, from facebook, repoob wants to know, what would you recommend in terms of insuring safety and hygiene for clients in a hotel spa and sauna . And this is very relevant, because before you came on, we took people up to yuba city that is working on clients. Any advice there . I was telling you, i feel very tempted to go up there myself, i feel a little bit ragged, but there are risks and benefits. I think in yuba city, in the Northern Counties theres a feeling that they hadnt had many deaths or illness so, maybe their incidents is really low, even though they havent done a lot of testing. And get to your question about protecting employees, its really about, how much can you keep that nose and mouth away mouth . Its really tough in an intimate setting like, you know, getting a manicure or peticure. If both parties wear masks and you can stay as far away as possible while still able to do it, it may be, you know, i think about it is risk reduction. Not like zero risk or, like, all the way risk, so, those would be ways to reduce your risk. Also, washing your hands, cleaning surfaces. The main thing is keeping the nose and mouth of the employee away, as much as possible, and if you can do that, wears ma s. The other thing that weve seen in Grocery Stores is that they protect employees by plexiglass, so, thats the other things that could be an idea, as well. Okay. Good one. Dr. Peter chinhong, lets go ahead and continue our conversation over on our remind me. I want to do it. The. All right, we are back with Infectious Disease specialist at ucsf, dr. Peter chinhong. Lots of questions coming in. Hollywoods to know, has all the social distancing and sanitation reduced the presence of other Infectious Diseases such as the flu . Yeah, so, theres a lot of good evidence now that we decreased the next most deadly respiratory tract infection is influenza, by all the measures weve taken with covid19. People are worried, if we kind of wie not as strict for the next infection season, which is the late fall and winter of this year, that well see both covid19 and influenza. That is going to be a challenging one. And that thought is frightening to a lot of people. Danilo wants to know, do we have to be concerned going to a dentist . Now, i dont think most dentist operations are up here in the bay area yet, so but i think that is very close, so, thats a concern that, you know, is coming next for us. What do you think . I think, again, i would weigh the risk and benefits of what you are doing at the dentist. If its a cleaning, maybe you can defer it, but if its something like, you know, a huge cavity and you need a filling, its probably fine, its just like going to a clinician. And weve been opening up clinics more and more every time, so, i think it depends on what you want to have done, but again, i treat it as any health care visit and if you really need it, people are going to use protection, both for you and for the dentists and the staff. Okay. Marlene wants to know, if we buy frozen food and stick it in the freezer, does that, the cold, kill the covid19 virus . Thats a great question. P the covid virus, again, prefers doesnt like cold, but it likes im sorry, it likes cold better than heat, so theoretically, it can live a little bit longer in those cold, if you freeze the food, but again, food transmission is not a really big thing in covid19, particularly given our low community prevalence, so, i wouldnt worry about it too much. I would just make sure you keep your eyes on the prize, which is keeping your nose and mouth away from somebody elses nose and mouth and even though i know we worry and all the things in our environment, i would just not worry about it too much if possible. Keep your nose and eyes on the prize. Okay. Or away from the prize, however you want to look at it, i get what youre saying there. Good point. Okay, are face masks with plastic transparent material effective protection . Have you seen a lot of that . Ive seen some advertised. I mean, i think depending on the model, there are some face masks which try to have a shield that goes from the top of the face mask up the eyes and it gives you an extra layer of protection, because it is protecting the eyes, as well. For every Day Community use, i wouldnt worry about that too much. Again, it will be what you dont want to have happen is, you manipulate that, because its uncomfortable, its getting to be summer, its going to be hot and stuffy, and by manipulating that is probably worse than sort of keeping a comfortable mask on for longer period of time. Heres a question from a viewer. Would love to babysit my granddaughter, but my soninlaw is an essential worker. Should he be tested before i can babysit again . Yeah, this is why i dont ask my parents to babysit for me. Yeah. I mean, that is tough. I mean, if this is somebody whole is more at risk for exposure in the household, but you need to, you know, get child care, i think its a reality for many people. There are some things that you can do. Its not an absolute yes or no, but maybe again thinking about risk redictiorection. Is there a play in the house that you can keep kind of cleaner and maybe the person who is the essential worker can stay away from that when theyre home, you clean the surfaces, maybe the babysitter, who is a family member, wears a mask, as well as the kid. So, those are all things that can reduce your risk a little bit. And i guess its not a really hard fast yes or no, because many people have different circumstances. All right, sandy wants to know, as a doctor, what are your thoughts about sending kids back to school in thats the next conversation. I think everyone is scared that were going to see a little not a surge, but its called a wave, after kids go back to school, well see an uptick in cases, but i think kids have to go back to school sometime, i mean, they cant stay home all the time. I know a lot of parents are bored with playing board games with their kids and home schooling and stuff. If we have enough testing in the community and contact tracing, well be able to figure out if that uptick is due to that associated with that back to cool part. Hey, before we let you go, we want to show something pretty cool. You guys celebrating your graduates. Were going to show that video and you can tell us about it. Yeah. Wow are these faculty showing off their moves to congratulate the class of 2020 . Yeah, the faculty were mainly there for entertainment purposes, but the students were the main dancers. You notice they all wore a different uniform. They were all in black to identify who the real dancers were and the faculty were in various other things. Mainly for entertainment purposes. It was really done by the thats you. Thats you, right . Oh, you toss your mask. In the orange, right. Im being a little bit sassy with my mask in that. I got you. I have to ask, i sense a Little Island flavor here in this video. Yeah, so, im from the caribbean originally and even though im from, you know, of asian descent, but asians that moved to the caribbean, but i felt the influence growing up, if thats what youre saying. Yeah, no, absolutely. I bet you cook the most creative, interesting cuisine in your household. You got to post some pictures on social for us one of these days. But thank you so much for the great information today and, yeah, congratulations to your graduates, im sure theyre going to go out there and do great work on their own and keep adding to the workforce that we need in california right now. Yeah, absolutely. Thank you so much. If you can stick thats going to do it for now. Thank you for joining us on this interactive show. We hope we got some of your answers today, got some insight as we took you inside a salon thats open now and got a great information, a whole load of it from dr. Peter chinhong. Back here tomorrow at 3 00. Byebye. Tonight, several developing headlines on coronavirus as we come on the air. Scientists and the new data late today. Amid fears people were getting this twice, what they now believe instead. And this is potentially significant. Well break it down for you. And President Trump making news, now defending his decision to take hydroxychloroquine. First, that new research tonight, just in from south korea. Fears there and elsewhere that people were testing positive for the virus twice. Theyre now saying in south korea there was something wrong with the testing. Tonight, what they now think about why those tests were coming back positive, and what it means on whether the patients were infectious to others a second time. It could be a major development. Also tonight, we continue to report on the race to find a
