Nightline starts right now with byron pitts. Good evening, thank you for joining us, tonight jacob blake is in the hospital paralyzed from the waist down after the seven gun shots from police. But his name is on the list of thousands who marched in the Nations Capital today. Reporter a city in rage. Black lives matter reporter and the nation in turmoil, after 29 year old jacob blake was shot in the back seven times by a Police Officer in kenosha, wisconsin, his three children sitting in the car. All my grandson asked repeatedly is why did the police arngouroteers strts deman justice for the National Guard called in to kenosha from three different states. Let me be clear. This wasnt an accident, this wasnt bad police work. This felt like some sort of vendetta being taken out on a member of our community. This community is like a box of matches right now. Were just the match that got lit. Reporter this just the latest flash point in a summer of unrest and protest about Racial Injustice and policing. Wed like to think that after the protest that followed the george floyd video, it felt as if a lot of progress was being made. And that was fools gold to be quite honest with you. A lot of people falsely believed that we had made some progress. We just raised significant awareness. Reporter adding to the aftermath of the shooting turning deadly this week when armed men who authorities call vigilantes clashed with protesters. Among them a teenager from out of state killed two people and injure add third, Kyle Rittenhouse in custody. Charged with possession of a dangerous weapon and multiple counts of homicide. The teen from antioch, illinois seen guarding a car repair shop tuesday night, telling blaze tv he was armed with lethal ammunition. We are protecting from the citizens, and i just got pepper sprayed whi sprayed by a person in the crowd. Reporter the incident unfolds. He can be seen running back to the scene where he shot a man, he picks up his phone and runs away, rosenbaum does not survive. One minute later, the shooter can be seen running down the street long gun in hand, protesters tackle him to the ground. His next victim, Anthony Huber tries to grab the gun seen in these still photos. Attempting to disarm him with a skateboard, but hes shot in the chest and killed. Another protester is shot in the arm. According to the complaint, he appeared to have a handgun. At 11 51, he approaches police arriving on the scene. As police move in, rittenhouse can be seen with his hands up, but hes not taken into custody. Its not until more than 12 hours later that Police Announce that hes turned himself in across state lines in illinois. Rittenhouses attorney saying kyle did nothing wrong, he exercised his common law and statutory law right to selfdefense. Kyle is not a racist or white supremacist, adding that rittenhouse was accosted by a mob while trying to protect a business. Kenosha county sheriff defending the officers who didnt take rittenhouse into custody that night. Ive been in shootings before. You have such tunnel vision on your target, you have such tunnel vision on what you believe is the greatest risk to you and people, a person walking or running down the street with their hands up is not a risk to me. Reporter some have contrasted rittenhouses treatment by Law Enforcement to blakes. There is something about dark skin that automatically registers as a threat to Law Enforcement that white skin hasnt proved to register in the same way. We need to have serious conversations about why Law Enforcement has this tendency to do that to men of color, to well o women of color and not white counter parts. Reporter police shot blake seven times in the back. Chesky and two other officers have been placed on streetive leave. Blake was shot after sheski and others responded to an incident last sunday evening according to the Wisconsin Department of justice. Authorities say blake ignored police commands. This video shows blake in the moments before he was shot, appearing to strug areal with officers before getting uper an side. Three officers of them with his grabbing blakes shirt as he opens the car door, and then the officer fired seven bullets in his back. Blake had a warrant for his arrest, based on charges of third degree sexual assault. Investigators say blake told the officers he had a knife. Authorities say the knife was found on the floor inside his car. So theres a lot here that has to be fleshed out yet. The officers dont wear bodyworn cameras. But the key part that i see of this, if he does have, if hes in possession of a knife, that raises the threat level up to the Police Officers at some point. The first thing he did when he looked at me was cry and begin to say, im sorry about all of this. I dont think he knows what happened. I said, then, why are you sorrya burden on anybody. I want to be with my children. And i dont think im going to walk again, mom. Reporter in the wake of the violent unrest in the streets of kenosha following her sons shooting, blakes mother making an emotional plea for peaceful protests this week. Do Jacob Justice on this level and examine your hearts. We need healing. A house that is against each other cannot stand. To all of the Police Officers, im praying for you. And yourie am a players fes chose to boycott games and practices, refusing to play in protest of jacob blakes shooting. I think the most difficult part is to see, like, people still dont care. The black men in america, its not easy. You keep loving this country, and this country does not love us back. And its just, its really so sad. That is not unusual. What happened this week is historic because now you have leagues behind these athletes. The league themselves are running around the mission of antiracism, so that these athletes arent on an island by themselves trying to drag the league across the finniish line. I hope that the nation understands that the march is a sign, a penetration point. The march signifies that something is stirring in the nation, and we cant miss whats really happening here, people are coming together whether its the march on washington, black lives matter or the poor peoples cai peoples campaign. We have people being lynched by the police, people dead from covid, we have people denied stimulus and sick leave, and theyre dieing from that. We have trillions given to corporations and not the seame amount of money given to communities. We had 700 people dying a day,u underinsured and thousands die for every one million uninsured. People are dying from climate crisis. How concerned are you that this generation will be frustrated by the efforts of today . Because dr. King spoke so eloquently, 57 years ago. John lewis said we want justice. We want it now, but 57 years later, were still having these same conversations. I think generation is clear by understanding that what that means is that the fight for justice and freedom is something always upon us. We win, but we have to continue to be vigilant. When i see all the poor, lowwealth black and white people from alabama to appalachia coming together across race, creed, color. When i see people in the march today, diverse and black lives matter march is diverse. People are saying wait a minute, were not giving this country up. Were not giving up on what it said on paper, and were going to take the baton now. Were not going to accept for instance the lies from frumt, t trump, the lies about covid and climate issues. People are saying, no, were going to tell the truth. And were going to resist the attention violence and we are going to be the Truth Tellers today. I think 57 years later people understand, every generation has its Edmund Pettus bridge. Every generation has its rosa parks moment. Every generation has its moment where it has to take on apartheid. Every conversation i have with you sounds like a sermon. And ive heard you say that racism doesnt just harm black americans but poor white americans. Why is it . Explain. Well, you know, ive been thinking about this a lot after trump did what he did at the white house illegally yesterday, turning it into his own political back drop. But the thing that troubled me most. I mean, there were so many lies about policy. But, when he told that revisionist history and left out black people and left out native people and left out poor white people and left out women and their struggle to vote and left out so many people, it reminded me that heres a man who engages in system eck racism ic racism policy. And once again something my grandmother told me when i was young applies now. She said son, if you scratch a liar, youll find a thief. Racism is a lie, and if you scratch a racist, youll find somebody who will steal your health care, steal your living wages, that will steal your tax dollars and give it to corporate wealth. It never comes back to you but only comes back to buy more stocks for corporate wealth and not lift up communities. Somebody whos a racist will steal your voter suppression. If you suppress the vote, racist voter suppression, its a target at black people and brown people, but byron, what it does is allows people to get elected, not necessarily black people, wh and once they get elected they use that power to block health care and living wangs and we are the only ones that can turn it around. I hear the passion, intensity, even anger in your voice. Are you hope follow this will happen . You talked about dr. King where he move towards, many would argue it cost him his life.
