This morning, the us is upping its support to israel, deploying military ships to the region, increasing the number of fighter jets in the middle east and israels military could ask the us to tap into its stockpiles inside israel, where the us military has maintained warehouses for decades containing tanks and ammunition. President biden with this warning. This is not a moment for any party hostile to israel to exploit these attacks, to seek advantage. Meanwhile, critics accuse the white house of financially enabling hamas to attack israel after releasing 6 billion in frozen funds to iran as part of a recent prisoner swap. Iran is suspected of playing a role in the attack, but secretary of state blinken says funds from the deal were not used. Republican president ial candidate nikki haley pushing back. I actually think it was irresponsive for secretary blinken to say that the 6 billion doesnt weigh in here. I mean, lets be honest with the American People and understand that hamas knows and iran knows theyre moving money around as we speak because they know 6 billion is going to be released. Thats the reality. The recent widespread protest in israel about a controversial overhaul to its judicial system may have also encouraged the fighters to launch the attack. Secretary blinken did not answer when asked to weigh in on the failure of Israeli Intelligence to prevent the attack, reiterating israel and the us will look at what red flags were missed. Blinken says the attack may have been designed to derail the normalize of ties between saudi arabia and israel. Saudi arabia has been on the verge of officially recognizing israel statehood. Certainly that could have been part of the motivation. Look who opposes normalization . Hamas, hezbollah, iran. So it wouldnt be a surprise that part of the motivation may have been to disrupt efforts to bring saudi arabia and israel together, along with other countries that may be interested in normalizing relations with israel. As the death toll rises on both sides, we wanted to get a better understanding, a deeper understanding of what led up to this point and what we can expect in the coming days. Former state Department OfficialSteve Ganyard says this conflict is unlike any other israel has faced. Certainly complacency was part of this huge intelligence failure. But theres also deeper systemic failures that the israelis will have to figure out. The 73 war was the only other war where they had this sort of failure. But the 73 war was very different. It was nation states. So israel, egypt, and it was force on force. This is hamas and hamas working in small groups using personal encrypted communications infill training israel. So very different kind of failure, but a failure that is inexcusable nonetheless. Remember that gaza, its a 25 mile strip, a couple of miles wide. It is right on the israeli border. And so this is really israels backyard. The us focuses more on strategic intelligence, both intelligence agencies are going to have to figure out why they didnt pick up on this attack. I think whats also amazing is the operation security that would have been required here. There were probably thousands of hamas fighters that were involved in the preparation and the practice and the actual execution. But the israelis didnt pick up on any of it. One thing that may have aided them is social media apps like imessage, like whatsapp, like signal that offer end to end encryption and will allow the hamas fighters to have encrypted communications between each other. That would be very difficult for intelligence agencies to pick up. Were sort of in a phase one, israel continues to root out the hamas invaders. Phase two will likely involve an israeli invasion of gaza. Before that happens, therell be some tough choices for netanyahu. He knows that some of the hostages are inside of gaza. He knows hamas has reinforced its defenses there and he knows he cant commit all of the israeli Defense Forces just to gaza and leave his northern flank with lebanon and hezbollah vulnerable.
