And their parents were like, and ill see you after school. [ laughter ] it was a pretty typical day for most students. Teachers started off by asking, does everybody have their supplies . And then students were like, yep, headphones, vape pen, and cbd gummies. [ cheers and applause but new york citys Public Schools are trying to be healthier this year, so theyre no longer serving salami or bologna sandwiches [ light laughter ] yeah, instead theyre going with organic, free range pigeon steve oh [ laughter ] jimmy hey, did you guys enjoy Labor Day Weekend . [ laughter ] steve oh jimmy he did the best he could. [ laughter ] and with the hurricane possibly hitting florida, trumps not taking any chances he even sent don, jr. To the roof of maralago to give him live updates [ laughter ] just, stay up there, don. [ laughter ] aim the golf club at the biggest cloud. [ laughter ] take the grip off. I want metal on metal. [ laughter ] i want you to hold it and just aim it and show me where. [ laughter ] but get this, during a press conference, trump said that hes never even heard of a a category five hurricane. [ light laughter ] so they explained it to him like this. They said, look, if this is a a category one [ laughter ] then this is a category five. [ laughter and applause hes like, all right, ill go thank you. It all makes sense now don, stay up there, don. Some more news [ laughter ] trumps personal assistant just resigned after she shared details about trumps family with journalists at an off the record dinner. Honestly, this doesnt seem like its an easy job to fill. When offered the position, even alexa was like no way in hell. Jimmy and you go, oh, thats not good. [ laughter ] you dont want that. Thats [ applause ] check this out, this weekend, police in scotland were called after thousands of people signed up to play a massive game of hide and seek inside an ikea. [ laughter ] yeah it only should have taken the police 20 minutes to assemble a team, but since it was ikea, it took them seven hours [ laughter ] [ applause ] the police had very clear directions, but then all the dads just threw those to the side and just kind of guessed their way through it [ laughter ] yeah, police found the suspects by following a trail of swedish meatballs. [ laughter ] yeah, people who got caught just pled insanity turns out they just had a couple screws loose. [ laughter and applause it was it was easy to spot, because the hideandseekers because their feet were sticking out from under a flugeldugel and nergenflergen. [ laughter ] and finally, this is a crazy story, in australia, a student pilot had to land the plane after his flying instructor passed out during his very first lesson [ laughter ] the student was congratulated by officials, while the instructor was hired by spirit airlines. And i looked right at her and i said no, dont say it i cant i said, you, too. [ screaming i shouldnt have done it [ laughter ] jimmy oh, my i did it again. Jimmy yeah, yeah, similar scary. Similar scary jimmy similar scary story. Double scare. Jimmy wow. This one i have for you is so scary the only person i ever told it to was my therapist. Oh, god jimmy after that, she quit the biz and became a judge on dancing with the stars. [ laughter ] anyway, one day [ light laughter ] i was walking down the street. So i saw someone waving at me. So i waved back. Then i realized he was actually waving to someone behind me. So i pretended to be directing traffic. [ laughter ] i stayed and directed traffic for three hours. And ive gone back there to direct traffic every day since just to keep up the charade. [ laughter ] no jimmy i did no thats nothing my skins atingling just thinking about this spooky tale [ laughter ] settle in. Im settled the other day, i coughed, but it sounded like a sneeze so someone turned to me and said, bless you. Then i turned to them and i said jimmy let me guess you said, you too. So that was yeah, that was awesome. Yeah jimmy thats fantastic, dude yeah. Jimmy youre just crushing it thanks. Jimmy a lot of people were talking about the episode that you directed i believe it was ronny lily . Yeah, ronny lily with the little girl, the little karate girl yeah jimmy i mean, this karate girl that was yeah. [ light laughter ] jimmy just beating you up. Yeah, the whole episode is this little girl her name is jessie, and she we wrote this script where she had to do like all types of crazy things where she had to jump on top of me, and fly on walls, and crawl up houses and stuff. And i was like, i dont know how were going to do this. And i remember my stunt coordinator, wade allen, said, you know, i have theres this little girl, her parents are stunt women and men. And its its a family. [ laughter ] its a whole other story but they said that shes amazing. And he showed me this video of her running along the top of a a roof, and jumping on to the hood of a moving car jimmy and youre like and i go, why do you have this on your phone . [ laughter ] jimmy why didnt you call the police yeah. You should call the police she clearly did something wrong. And so she came in, and she was like amazing and they gave her dad the script, and he read it, and he goes, oh, shes doing this kind of [ bleep ] with me and her brothers all the time. [ laughter ] jimmy oh, my god like beating you up, and hitting jimmy but then, talk to me about it chapter two. Yeah. Jimmy this is a big deal, big movie. [ cheers and applause yeah. Jimmy full on scary movie, but also a lot of action in this do you do your own stunts in this no, well, okay. So like, james mcavoy does his own stunts he can like run up and jump off of things, and do a bunch of crazy things jimmy yeah and everybody is i theres a part where we had to run from the clown. And i ran, and i ran four feet, and pulled my groin muscle [ laughter ] i was like screamg jimmy did you really and they had to get my stunt guy just to run. [ laughter ] like, the stunt dudes are so stoked to like jimmy yeah what am i doing, brah . Jimmy yeah, am i going through a wall, brah . Wanna go, brah . Get me here . Thats all you, dude thats all you and they were like i was like, yeah and the guy was like, i just gotta run . Are you serious . [ laughter ] jimmy like how far . Haders thing but like miles, right . And then i get hit by a car . Jimmy from here to the camera there . Are you joking whered you find this dude . [ laughter ] and then im like and then i had to go and get like an ultrasound with and i had to get very friendly with a toronto doctor. Jimmy yeah just like, oh man. Oh, god man. Howd you get this were you getting chased by a a clown then . [ laughter ] jimmy i know you had to you give credit to Finn Wolfhard yeah. Jimmy for getting this role, from stranger things, obviously. Yeah woo [ cheers ] jimmy and the first it. Yeah. Jimmy i like that guy. Why . Why, how do you okay, so finn so, when they asked them, who do you want to play you in the sequel, cause they all grow up he said, he wanted me to and then my i thought, oh, thats sweet. And my agent sent me a little clip of him saying that. And i was like, oh, thats nice. And then like three months later they were like, hey, you got a meeting to meet with the director of it. And i was like, this finn kids like super powerful. [ laughter ] jimmy oh, my gosh. Hes running hollywood yeah, hes like joffrey [ laughter ] like, bring him to me bring me the man who played stefon, i want him to play me in the movie [ laughter ] bring him here [ applause ] his little scepter get him in here now barry, whatever his name is. [ light laughter ] jimmy can you set up it chapter two cause the first one was totally frightening, and continues to give me nightmares and its a which is i guess what you want from these films yeah, i guess so. I would hope so. Jimmy its frightening its terrifying and then, yeah, i went to the so its like yeah, its 27 years later. Were all back and theyre, you know, trying to kill the jimmy clown. Freaking clown. Yeah, and then [ light laughter ] jimmy every 27 years it comes back it comes back and then, i was at the premiere and i normally dont sit in the premiere of things i kind of, like, walk the red carpet, i go hi, and then i go home. But that one, i was like, i want to see it with an audience. And i went, and its really scary. Like, i knew what was happening, and i was looking at my feet a lot of the time. [ light laughter ] and then there was a guy across the aisle from me. My character at one point is put in some real peril, where you dont know whats going to happen and the guy across the aisle was like, uhoh, dude. [ laughter ] looks like someones about to die. [ laughter ] i was kind of like, you seem kind of stoked about this. Yeah, thats why i forked over all the cash, to see hader die [ light laughter ] going to be pretty sweet. Jimmy here we go. Here we go. Its Dennis Miller [ light laughter ] jimmy i do want to show everyone a clip. Heres bill hader in it chapter two. Oh, before we go to the clip, i just want to say, youve been getting great reviews for this film oh, thanks. Yes. Jimmy congrats on that dude thank you so much jimmy i just love when good things happen to good people heres bill hader in it chapter two. Take a look. Thanks, guys jimmy thanks you for coming back to the show thank you for doing that scary stories thank you for having me jimmy with bill and i. Do you scare easily . I have a feeling that you dont. Boo jimmy no, not scaring me, but do you get scared . I feel like having older sisters, you kind of i used to get scared a lot and especially after you know that friends episode when he talks about unagi . [ light laughter ] [ cheers ] you know what im talking about . I feel like i have a pretty good unagi jimmy you do yeah, yeah. Jimmy you do stuff like, dont you jump out of planes or something . Yeah, i jump out i did bear grylls recently, which was so fun have you seen jimmy i love bear grylls yeah yeah, he came to my school actually, when i was nine years old. And he was one of the first people to climb everest, youngest people to climb everest. But ive been obsessed with him ever since so when he asked me to do his show, i was i just knew, whatever bear asked me to, i had to do it. Jimmy no, no, no, no no matter what it was jimmy no, i mean, well thats yeah, but no, you dont actually have to do everything no, no you do jimmy no, no, no yeah. T the funny part was cause they usually ask like, okay, are you scared of heights . Can you ride a motorcycle . Can you do this . And every time i get asked this on a job, like, can you tap dance . Can you drive a car . Im always like, yeah, yeah i can do everything. cause i always think i can learn how to so like, can you ride a scooter . I was like, of course. But i didnt know that i was going to have like start myself, this old italian scooter. And that was actually the hardest part of the whole thing. It took me an hour to like get the thing going. Jimmy thats what the whole episode is, you trying to start an old vespa tipping over, it was so humiliating. Goddamn vespa wouldnt go. But the funniest part was, i like finally get it hurtling down, on this vespa you have to change the gears and suddenly, there was this rumbling behind me i was like, oh my god, i can feel him. That sounds weird. But he flew right over my head on a helicopter. I was like, ah, there he is it was awesome jimmy really yeah. Jimmy and did you have to go you had to go camping. You had to eat bugs and stuff . Yeah, yeah. Jimmy you did all of it. I ate a rat [ audience groans jimmy cara, what are you doing . I told you i would do anything for bear. Jimmy what are you doing i would do anything for bear jimmy you did, you ate a a rat . Yeah, but the worst jimmy how could you though the worst part was, we were walking. We had just traversed down a a hill, or whatever. Jimmy yeah i think thats the word jimmy sure that people use i saw this tail sticking out, i was like, whats that is that a rat . And he was like, perfect, thats our dinner. And i was like, no, that wasnt jimmy that was my cause it really, they dont set it up. Jimmy that was a tissue that fell out of my bag. Its not set up [ light laughter ] its not set up. The whole thing and i was like and it had been dead for it didnt smell that bad, but it wasnt fresh obviously [ audience groans but he like picked it up he was like, you can put it in your bag cause you dont have a lot of stuff in there. Like [ laughter ] jimmy oh, my gosh. Have you ever lied before on other no, yeah. No, not jimmy im saying like to get roles. I did victorias secret, and they were like, can you roller skate . I was like, yeah, of course, its easy. And then we were doing rehearsals, and i cant roller skate. [ light laughter ] and so i was like, getting down to the end, and Justin Bieber is meant to be there, and i was like, catch me cause i dont know how to stop [ light laughter ] jimmy Justin Bieber, catch me yeah, but yeah, luckily. But then they were like, this is a risk, so were just going to have you walk jimmy you do a great irish accent in carnival row. Thank you very much jimmy yeah, thank you very much that was very bad [ irish brogue ] jimmy how do you do that how you just get right into it are you irish thats actually quite good jimmy im drunk right now, but thank you. [ laughter ] me too, its great. Jimmy explain the can you set up carnival row for anyone who hasnt heard of it no. Jimmy okay okay. [ light laughter ] jimmy but i mean thats not what i meant so jimmy its a fantasy its a fantasy. Its a neo its set in this, like, neovictorian fantasy world. Its like this crime thriller with a not like cliche hollywood love story. Its quite this, like, twisted, heartbreaking, love story. But also this the best part, in my opinion, is the terrifying, but great not great, but terrifying social commentary, which is whats going on in the world right now. Theres so many different pieces and elements to it. But i think the most important thing is talking about refugees, and the migrant crisis right now its really interesting how its reflecting. cause to use fantasy in that kind of way, i think is the most beautiful thing cause it just opens up a conversation cause i think the worst things that are happening in the world just need to be spoken about so, if we can use art to open conversations, i think its the best thing jimmy good for you i agree. Good for us [ cheers and applause jimmy i agree. Its you and Orlando Bloom bloomy. Jimmy yeah you and Orlando Bloom, or as you call him, bloomy i dont i just did now jimmy okay, yeah i want to show hell be angry now. Jimmy i want to he will get mad. Hell go, why would you do that . I want to show a clip here heres Cara Delevingne and Orlando Bloom in carnival row. Take a look. You lying youre alive mima roosan came to me with blood on her hands she said you died in her arms. Why did she lie to me . Because i told her to we told each other everything couldnt you have at least told me goodbye i wanted i never meant to hurt you. Hurt me you destroyed me [ cheers and applause jimmy thats how you do it, right there. This is how we do it jimmy last time you were here, you showed us how you can beatbox. We always try to ask you for a a hidden talent or Something Like that. Mmhmm. Jimmy and so i found out, and you were great, and we loved it and i found out theres another hidden talent that you have, which is that you can play the guitar behind your back . Behind my head. Jimmy yeah and with my toes. Joking im just joking. [ laughter ] jimmy no, but how did you learn how to do that i like to show off, apparently jimmy no, no no, jimi hendrix. I dont know i always think with musical instruments, its always fun to play them how other people dont. cause its like, you get taught how to do things, and i like to do them unconventionally jimmy yeah but thats something that ive seen before so i was just like, oh i want to try it. And its actually not it is hard, but it wasnt as hard i learned when i was young very young, so jimmy we happen to have a guitar here. Oh, no jimmy i was just wondering this is one he made earlier [ applause ] jimmy could you oh, god. Jimmy id just like to give can you give us a little taste ow. Oh, jesus. Jimmy alright, now this is Cara Delevingne playing guitar behind her head. Ooh okay, sorry. [ cheers and applause jimmy oh, my god, thats how you do it right there [ cheers and applause Cara Delevingne, everybody carnival row is streaming now on amazon prime video. Well be right back with lester holt, everybody [ cheers and applause i knew my daughter could be at risk of certain cancers later in life. From an infection, Human Papillomavirus i knew that hpv could lead to certain cancers. I knew her risk for hpv increases as she gets older. Jimmy oh, my goodness. And i have a 20 actually, hell be two years old this week jimmy is that right . Yeah. Jimmy oh, my gosh. Its the greatest. I mean, i wouldnt know to be a grandpa. I mean its cool, because you do its everything they say you get that time with them. That the special time. But when its time to leave jimmy youre outta there you leave [ laughter ] jimmy you get outta there. Usually its around usually around diaper time jimmy yeah, yeah, yeah i raised you. I did enough yeah, bye. Thats great you do such a good job over at the nightly news. And i tell you that every time, but you really do. And i know right now youre covering a lot of Hurricane Dorian what can you tell us yeah, i mean, as you know, it crushed a lot of the bahamas and there are several deaths there. And then were watching it now you know, it sat there for a a couple of days jimmy it really did. And now its finally beginning to move up the coast but its going to be a real close call for a lot of places up and down, you know, between florida and North Carolina so were weve got our teams stretched out along the coast. Jimmy oh, good thank you for doing that the lets talk about this dateline special first of all, how did you agree to do Something Like this . And who pitched it to you . And are they still employed by nbc . Yeah, well, i mean [ light laughter ] to give you the back story, ive done a lot of criminal Justice Reform stories, Wrongful Conviction stories over the last several years. Jimmy yeah one of the producers i work with, dan slepian, has been very passionate on this subject. We got to talking about we need to do Something Big something that hasnt been done before he comes back to my office a a few days or weeks later. And he says, what if we put you as an inmate in a maximum security prison in louisiana . And im waiting for the punchline. And then i realize hes serious. [ laughter ] jimmy im still laughing id be like, what . Well, that was kind of where i was. It took me a while to come around but i started thinking about it and it gave us an opportunity to tell the story from the inside so, you know, i wasnt playing prisoner but i did spend two nights, three days at angola, which is a notorious prison in louisiana. Its the largest in the country. And, basically, moving among the inmates and the staff there with our camera crew, getting some of the personal stories and trying to understand some of the issues with criminal Justice Reform jimmy were they okay having you there . They were the prison louisiana has made a lot of changes. They confronted the idea that, you know, what were doing, locking up more people than any other state wasnt working by itself so they passed different laws to reduce incarceration levels so they really wanted to show off what they were doing theyve got a long way to go but ill tell you, it was an eyeopener there were moments there i realized that there are no guards around me and im walking among the inmates. And theres certainly no fear. But theres this kind of heightened awareness, you know, given where i was. Jimmy sure, of course. Do you also touch on the issue of what happens if they do get out of prison . Well, thats one of the big deals. 95 of the people we have locked up in this country are going to get out some day. So when we talk about criminal Justice Reform, it affects all of us. cause these folks are going to be our neighbors theyre going to be sharing, you know, the same streets we walk down. Going to the stores we go to so weve got we have an investment we have to be invested in the idea that they come out better than when they went in jimmy wow. And that theyre prepared as well yeah. I mean, you know, and being in there, being able to talk to people you know, we shot it in such a a way where the camera was not right on top of people camera was, you know, across the room and so it allowed for some really intimate conversations. The guy in the cell next to mine, you know, he would want to talk sometimes. And he would take a white towel and kind of throw it out so i could see it and we would start just kind of hanging out and talking, and hearing his story. Most of the inmates in angola stay in kind of a dormitory setting. I was locked up with troublemakers, mostly, who are in individual cells in the area, where you spend 23 hours a day in that cell and you get one hour to walk, you know, maybe the distance between the here and then the roots here and then youre back in your cell jimmy wow. So it was i think thats the thing that struck me was, okay, im in this cell. I know im going to get out to shoot things during the day. And ill be out in a couple of days. But the thought that you could be in a space like that. And maybe thats really going to be your life, i mean, your life when you talk about life in prison, i dont the ability of people to cope in situations like that is really is really extraordinary. Jimmy and then the town hall explain, that is on msnbc. Yeah, so the town hall meeting that we tape at another prison, Sing Sing Correctional Facility here in new york. Where we gathered, you know, john legend whos been very involved in criminal Justice Reform along with a lot of experts in the field, to really kind of talk out some of the issues. And where change is happening and where it should be happening. Jimmy thats fascinating i want to show a clip of the dateline special life inside. Take a look at this. All of this, as far as the eye can see, is angola its a series of prisons they call them camps these guys you guys from camp d yes, sir. Theyre from camp d and then doing work like this. Today we happen to be picking carrots. So should i be worried about my safety here . Well if you was an inmate, yeah. Yeah. I certainly cant escape the optics look around. Mostly black men working on a former slave plantation, under the watch of armed guards on horseback its unsettling to many. [ applause ] jimmy unbelievable yeah, it was it was really strange to be in that setting because were sitting there picking you know, we went out on what they this tractor they call a hootenanny and were in the field and were doing this and i look around. And i said to one of the guys, everybody looks like us. And, you know, i mean, people of color and knowing the history and the prison folks point out they said, look, this is food thats going to be consumed at the prison itself. And that, you know, virtually any farmland in louisiana was a former slave plantation. But the optics were among the many things that captured me there. That particular group of guys, thats the lowest job at the prison thats working in the fields you know, the weather can be tough. And obviously its manual labor. And thats probably the only time that i was little, you know, more on guard around me. But you had the literally you had the guards on horsebacks with the guns and jimmy its unbelievable. It was yeah, it was an eyeopener jimmy i hope this starts a a lot of conversations lester holt, everybody [ cheers and applause life inside airs this friday this friday at 10 00 p. M. On nbc.
