Chief says it shows a mob who infiltrated Peaceful Protesters to attack Police Officers, trying to provoke them. Gas was deployed. The chief said some of the instigators were highly organized, carrying walkie talkies, carrying others who flanked the attack. Rebar pelted the officers. Thats when the onscene commander called for the use of tear gas and what are called rubber foam baton rounds. If that entire crowd would have turned on those officers, they would have been overrun. It would have been a done deal. It wouldnt have even been close and easily could have led to a deadly force situation. Reporter the chief says for the officers it was stay and protect the city or retreat, and let the city burn. Were not going to lose the city. Reporter in an exclusive oneonone interview, the chief said other than this viral video showing one officers inappropriate response to the crowd hes proud of the way the officers stood their ground against an organized mob. Take the tear gas and rubber foam batons away as some city leaders are considering and the chief says it would have been much worse. Led to handtohand combat and much more aggressive styles of use of force. Reporter chief says they would never use tear gas on a solely piece paesful protest but needs none lethal options when dealing with a crowd that is attacking his officers. Now one option that did help a lot, the chief says, was the curfew. That curfew ended at 5 00 a. M. This morning. Merit said at todays News Conference that he can call an emergency meeting and reimplement that curfew at a moments notice. Theyve been on the situation at hand. They wont need it here. This crowd is very peaceful and protesting, exercising their right to protest in front of city hall. Again, no Police Officers on hand tonight. Live in san jose, damian trujillo, nbc bay area. Another black man who died in police custody, steven taylor. Showing us how the movement around floyd is raising awareness for taylor and others. Reporter this protest is inspired by george floyd but the focus is on a bay area man, steven taylor. Community groups ral lid in front of the San Leandro Walmart where in april 33yearold taylor was confronted by officers. Police said he ignored orders to drop the bat he was carrying and move forward before being shot to death. The community then and now protested. His mother says shes grateful for the recognition and says her son was popular in the neighborhood but had Mental Health issues and didnt need to be killed. My heart is overwhelmed. Im still in mourning, but im grateful. Im grateful that we can keep his name alive. And this is a fight, not just for africanamerican. This is a humanity fight and we all have to be in it. So this protest is to wake everybody up. Wake up. Reporter many of the protesters were from san leandro high school. We finally get a chance to put our voices out there. By all means, i think many people are going to try our best to make a difference. Reporter taylors family is skeptical. This is 2020 and this has been going on for rodney king up until now. Reporter that skepticism about Real Progress also means this group doesnt plan to stop demonstrating. There are protests planned at San Leandro City Hall tomorrow and saturday. John burriss is representing the family of a 22yearold man shot and killed by Vallejo Police this week, shot outside a walgreens store as police were responding to a flood of looting calls tuesday. The Vallejo Police chief says officers opened fire because they thought a hammer was a gun. He was kneeling with hands above his waist when they fired. Burrissis is representing the family and says police had no reason to shoot. He was not running at him, waving a baton or the hammer, nor had he pulled it out. Its baffling to understand what the danger was to the officer. Burris says its critical for police to release the officers body cam video immediately. The police chief says they have up to 45 days but plans to release it as soon as possible. The officer who fired the weapon has been placed on leave while the District Attorney and department investigate. More than a memorial. Today a celebration of George Floyds life was also a plea for justice. An acknowledgement that a powerful movement is now taking hold. Floyds family and friends came together to say goodbye but they werent alone. Thousands gathered outside this Minneapolis Church and across the nation, as they have been the past ten days. The reason why we are marching all over the world is we were like george. We couldnt breathe. Not because there was something wrong with our lungs, but that you wouldnt take your knee off our neck. We dont want no favors. Just get up off of us, and we can be and do whatever we can be. This weekend a public memorial will be held in North Carolina where george was born and a funeral next weekend in houston, where george floyd grew up. President trump is facing new criticism for his response to the nationwide protests. The surprising source . His own former defense secretary and other military leaders. General james mattis wrote an oped in the atlantic saying, quote, donald trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the american people, does not even pretend to try. Retired marine general john allen and former joint chiefs of staff mike mullen and Martin Dempsey are also speaking out specifically for the president s threat to deploy active duty u. S. Troops against the protesters. Dempsey wrote, america is not a battleground. Our fellow the city zens are not the enemy. Thats the plan this summer, another march on washington with many of the same calls for justice. Among the people that were there for mlks speech in 1963 is oaklands erica huggins. Shes dedicated her life to the civil rights movement. Early mep of the black Panther Party which started in oakland in the 1960s. I asked her today, is she going to go back to d. C. This summer . I would give anything to be there. I went against my mothers wishes, by myself, and took two city buses because, you know, i grew up in washington, d. C. In southeast. So, to get to northwest wasnt easy. I was 15. And i went. And it was there that i made a vow. It wasnt like it was in my head. A vow rose in my heart that i would serve people for the rest of my life. That was a pivotal moment. And i think this will be, this year this year itself is pivotal for a number of people, for a number of reasons, but that march will be a pivotal point. Reporter is there something that encourages you right now that youre seeing on your streets, on your television or in your heart . Young people. Children. They make so much sense. And when i talk to them, because its part of the work that i do, they dont understand why people cant children particularly think its really ignorant for people to hold on to a judgment. I wanted to show you not just one thing, but two Different Things that will be helping to switch up our weather. So, lets take it to the maps and well see this storm system off to the south. This is mainly impacting Southern California with some showers, but this is helping to get the fog going at the coastline right now. We have that, that will help to drop temperatures and a stronger storm off to the north. A stronger, late season storm with much colder air and also rainfall that will be moving into northern california. So, lets peel apart the layers here. Well getthe Colder Weather. You are feeling it, especially into morgan hill. We are now 20 degrees colder compared to this time yesterday with some 70s and low 80s, seeing numbers drop there across livermore and oakland. Down to 69 degrees. Patchy clouds across the peninsula. 63 to start. Some of that fog possible in the north bay. Coolest spot in san francisco, 59 with low clouds and fog returning. Stark contrast for some of you as we roll into tomorrow. By the afternoon, though, i think everybody will definitely have those larger changes from those two different storms getting going at the coastline.
