Dena tauriello is here thanks so much being with us, dena thank you, seth [ cheers and applause seth our first guest tonight iss chief washingto corresent and the anchor of tonigith jake tapper, which airs weeknights on cnn through the midterms his first cover story for the atlantic, which ive got right here, this is not justice the story of c. J. Rice is out now please welcome back to the show, our friend jake tapper, everybody. [ cheers and applause seth welcome back. Thank you thank you. Dont dont ignore the kicks. Seth i like that you took advantage of the fact that were a little more casual here now to wear your those are phillies kicks. These are Philadelphia Phillies kicks if you may have heard, theyre in the world series. Seth theyre in the world series [ cheers ] pretty nice time to be a philadelphia sports fan, i would say, right its great. The eagles are 70 theres something going on with soccer seth yeah. There you go now, i want to ask because you have moved to through the midterms, youre doing your show at 9 00 p. M. , a primetime show. Yes seth you used to do your show at 4 00 p. M. , a perfect time to wrap up your days work and then watch baseball. This is terrible timing. For the world series, yes, its bad i do have the p on my e so seth yeah. Ive noticeding a lot of your interviews, youre definitely watching Something Else [ laughter ] if you turn on and i seem distracted or im like, yes then its not about the economy. Seth right im like, wow, hes really psyched about inflation, yeah. He seems to be supporting higher crime numbers seth so thats interesting so during a commercial break, youre not asking people for scores youre fully looking down. Mlb app in fact, i have found it so much easier to be a sports fan now because of my phone. Seth yes wite mlb app, sunday ticket, it makes it much bet yot alerts eth ito, in colle go to a pay e and call just to hear what the scores were thats at least technology. I used to just wait for the newspaper to come in, turn to the sports pages oh, schmitty seth speaking of mike schmidt yes seth i know that you mike schmidt, the greatest third baseman of all time, in case you dont know. [ cheers and applause seth by the way, so this is modern mike schmidt. Thats me and schmitty, yes we went to a game in july. A dream. Seth and a true gentleman. Now heres the thing i want to ask you. Mike schmidt, he famously had a mustache when he played. He was a redhead with a mustache very iconic look he looks very different. Seth my dad has a mustache still has his mustache yeah. Seth and a lot of people, when i was growing up, a lot of people told me my dad looked like mike schmidt. Youre a phillies fan. Im going to show you three pictures you have to tell me is it mike schmidt, or is it my dad . [ light laughter ] just so you know, i actually literally collect mike schmidt baseball cards seth right so i have seen all of these cards before seth so youll have an advantage, but its still pretty tricky you think so . Okay okay [ laughter ] so that that looks like mike schmidt seth okay. That looks like the actual mike schmidt seth thats the actual mike schmidt okay. That is definitely the actual mike schmidt i have that card seth there we go and [ laughter ] dont answer right away. Thats thats tha fake schmidt and when you see it like t yoally do think, he ever looke mike [ laughter ] thats like mike schmidt if you put mike schmidt like microw seth mrowave schmidt nice. Seth t you go, yeah. Not really that nice your dads a very handsome man. Seth nice save, jake tapper. [ laughter ] i just mean its off from seth no. Thats always there was a slang when jake and i were growing up you would say, if a man was really handsome, youd be like, ooh, look who just got out of the microwave. [ laughter ] its an 80s thing. Seth you wouldnt understand its when microwaves were new. Seth its why you didnt get the cocoon joke. [ laughter ] so your son, jack is 13 now. Hes 13, yes. Seth so during the pandemic, i would imagine that was probably a sweet spot age to go back and watch did you watch a lot of tv . Did you introduce him to a lot of stuff i did hes a tough customer. We watched band of brothers. Seth perfect show. Hes really into police, and hes really into world war ii victories. Seth okay. Gotcha he doesnt like the losses no. I just want to make sure hes rooting for the right side seth exactly so we watched all of band of brothers, and then we got really into the show called the rookie, which is a Nathan FillionPolice Procedural on abc, and its a great show. Its a lot of fun. Seth and then i guess nathan must have found out you were a fan of it. We tweeted. I tweeted to him a thank you im sure you all remember looking for any sort of comfort during the seth of course the unpleasantness. And that was something we could do, and it was a nice little time, and wed watch the show. So i yeah, i tweeted Nathan Fillion i think my son actually asked me, can you please let them know how much we love the show . Seth thats great. So i tweeted Nathan Fillion he was very nice he wrote back. He sent my son a care package full of rookie stuff, and then he said when covid clears up, we can visit the set sometime seth so you did, and not only did you get to visit the set, he gave you obviously youre very comfortable in front of the camera a cameo, but also jack. Was jack at all hesitant no. Oh, my god, he was very excited. He was very excited, and i was trying to think what and let me just also say alexi hawley, the showrunner, and everybody there, Nathan Fillion, they were so nice. And i cant imagine i dont know what shows you were into when you were like 12 or 13, but for me, this would have been like meeting the six Million Dollar man, hanging out with lee majors or hanging out with alan alda at the set of mah. Like it was a dream for him. He loved it. Seth thats amazing. And now were going to review his acting performance because i think he did a pretty good job i think he was pretty good. I think he did a great job. Lets take a look at the tapper boys here on an episode of the rookie. Oh, thats a brilliant costume, young man you too, slightly older man. I dont see many philly fans this side of the rockies you from there . Foxburg actually just moved here a few years ago. You look remarkably like that fellow from cnn. Whats his name . Jake tapper no, thats not it yeah, it is here, you guys want some candy thank the nice people thank you roger that. [ light laughter ] seth i think he did a great job. [ cheers and applause isnt he cute seth he did great. Hes such a he was so appreciative, and this is something that youre able to do, im sure because, with your kids too but, like we were driving back from the set, and he actually was weeping out of happiness, which ive never done in my entire life. I dont know if any of you have seth see, im not going to do it for my kids. [ laughter ] its a tough world. Seth you got to earn it. Its a tough world. Seth no free cameos. If you want to be on the rookie, you have to go through the audition process like every other kid. Seth everybody else. They were like, will you tweet Nathan Fillion im like, you get a twitter account, and you tweet him right like, dad, can i have money, can i have money for a head shot youre like, just use this picture of my dad as mike schmidt [ light laughter ] seth heres your grandpa as mike schmidt thats your gift for the day i have a million things to ask you about, especially with the midterm and the world at large will you stick around for it yes, of course. Thank you so much. Seth all right well be right back with more from jake tapper [ cheers and applause you like that bone . I got a great price on it. Did you see my tail when that chewy box showed up . Oh, i saw it. Sorry about the vase. Can we just say vase like normal people . Fine. I always wondered what it would be like to have a tail. [ cheers and applause seth welcome back to late night. Were here with jake tapper. As we mentioned, youre doing your show at 9 00 p. M. Through the midterms yeah. Seth this is going to be i think people have said this a lot. This is the biggest midterm in our lifetime this does seem like a big one, and im wondering how you approach covering it because it seems like you have one party digging their heels in, in advance, about this election might be stolen from us again. Yeah. In fact, kari lake, the republican nominee in arizona, has basically said shes only going to accept the results if she wins seth yep which is an interesting guiding principle. Seth a nice piece of honesty, yeah. [ laughter ] yeah, its weird. I mean theres a bunch of election liars election deniers who are in competitive races, and could very likely win, kari lake among them. In pennsylvania, and michigan, and arizona. And its something that i think people in the media just need to be honest and upfront about. Seth what about how the returns come in, because i think youve obviously been through so many of these election nights. Yeah. Seth and sometimes certain places report early, and, you know, all of a sudden you have a candidate who is leading 8020 but people there, people in the room know this isnt a real number yet, right . We have the bluer areas of the state havent reported like do you have long discussions about how you put up the results . Well, when the results come in, we try to make sure people understand these are early ballots, or this state has these kinds of rules you know, its very frustrating for me because im from pennsylvania, and the legislature there, which is republicanled, will not let the election boards not only count them ahead of time, the votes that come in in early voting or absentee ballots but even prepare them, meaning you cant even take them out of the envelope so, a whole bunch of votes will not be counted that day just because of how the rules are and yet people will then complain about how inefficient the system is as if theres some hijinks going on and trump took advantage of this in 2020. He made it very clear he was going to declare victory early, knowing that there were still going to be millions of votes to be counted seth i want to ask what your take is obviously very early days of elon musk in charge of twitter. But weve already seen a few things where hes magnifying hes magnifying news stories that are sort of unsourced and poorly reported. Theyre not unsourced and poorly reported. Theyre nuts seth yeah. Theyre crazy he okay [ cheers and applause no, but its theres bad journalism, and then theres crazy, right seth right i mean this is crazy. So Hillary Clinton cited something about the attack on Nancy Pelosis husband being due to rightwing rhetoric, and isnt that unfortunate, et cetera and elon musk wrote back to her on twitter, there might be something more a little bit more to the story. And linked to a website that literally well, that had a Smear Campaign about paul pelosi, but more importantly had declared that Hillary Clinton died in 2016 seth yeah. And that a body double had actually debated donald trump. That was the that was the source thats the source material that were dealing with here. Seth so its actually good that elon said there might be more to the story than you think if you are who you say you are [ laughter ] right right. Hillary clinton. [ light laughter ] seth but i think right, thats the scary thing about this early approach is it does seem as though he likes to throw things out, and say just worth mulling over. Yeah. Seth and that is not very helpful as far as moving forward the political discourse. Yeah. Look, im generally on the freer speech debate, that the solution to speech you dont like is more speech but generally speaking, the idea that not only was he allowing this to be on the platform, which you can make a decision about that one way or the other, that he was actually pushing it out as a guy with 110 million followers on twitter is not cause for confidence about what the platforms going to be like in the future. But well see. Its early days yet, early days. Seth it is early days. I think hes going to turn it around [ laughter ] youre not even on it that much anymore seth look, im not going to pay 20 bucks a month for a blue check mark are you kidding me [ cheers and applause look, i am let me explain why. I have a severe gambling problem. [ laughter ] i want to talk about this, not to yeah. Seth this is a very serious and incredibly wellreported piece of journalism that you have a Family Connection to. So, this is a story about a young man who was convicted for a crime that he very likely didnt commit. But the one thing you make clear in the story, is whether you think he committed the crime or not, no one would agree that he got good legal representation. He had a horrible lawyer. My dad was his pediatrician. This is c. J. C. J. Rice was 17 saw him in his Pediatric Office in south philadelphia, and c. J. Could barely walk. Five days later, there was another shooting, a horrible thing, and i think its kind of shady, but ultimately somebody said that c. J. Did it even though the shooters had been seen running and c. J. , my dad, other people who knew him thought, well, theres no way theyre going to convict him of this, or even charge him for it. He can barely walk, much less run. Seth he turned himself in. He turned himself in. Seth because he was so confident that based on the fact that he could not run, this would be a situation where they would just let him walk out of the Police Station right and his mom worked for the district attorneys office, et cetera he gave them his phone, thinking, well, theyre clearly going to check to see that my phone was actually in West Philadelphia that day, not south philadelphia where the shooting was. But none of that happened, and instead he didnt get a he wasnt lucky enough to get a public defender. Hes poor, so he couldnt afford a good attorney that you or i would have been able to afford he didnt get a public defender, which are generally pretty good lawyers, public defenders. He had a courtappointed attorney, and some of them are great. But the records statistically, and according to studies, is much worse, and she was just a horrible lawyer, horrible. And one instance after another, she failed him making you know, having it be in Juvenile Court because he was 17, going to the crime scene, challenging the one piece of evidence against him over and over and going through this case, which my dad asked me to look into after years of trying to get him out of prison, it really just opened my eyes about how i mean, we know it intellectually, but there really are just two systems of justice, one for people who can afford it i would never have even been charged with this crime, and if i had been, i would have gotten a lawyer who would have gotten it thrown out of court but this kid, you know, he got the bad end of the stick when it comes to this sort of thing. And he couldnt afford a good lawyer, and he had a horrible one. And now hes just in prison for 30 to 60 years for a crime in which nobody was even seriously wounded, much less killed. Justice. And so, yoow, i hear a t abouim tv ads and, you abou on my show. Ing a piece but, you know, the idea that anytimybody challenges aconvict ime, im soft me i want anybody guilty of a shooting offensejail in on but i dont think he did it, and thns the peowho did do it, theyill out there. Wonderfuece of reporting the cotion to your fr and the role he played, the realoble role he pla should be d as well. Makes for great reading. Seth please welcome to the show the one, the only Sheryl Lee Ralph, everybody. [ cheers and applause seth welcome, sheryl, i am so happy to see you. I knew the last time i saw you was at the emmys we talked before the show about how you were coming on we did not know that our paths were going to cross again. Thats right. Seth over the course of the evening, which is amy poehler and i presented the emmy for your category, and we were lucky enough to be onstage when you came up. Look at you seth i was very happy for you. Yes, very handsome. Seth i was very happy. I was also very happy that you showed up because, sheryl, you were so surprised you won, you sat in your chair for a long time i did [ laughter ] seth, when they called my name, it was like everything just turned to mush, and i was in some surreal place and i was like, is this really happening . Did they really just call my name . And then i could hear quinta and y, ge [ laughter ] seth well, i love this photo because, one, you can see how happy everyone is. And, two, you can see that yourt did you have any so did you go into it thinking, oh, this is an honor to be nominated, but i wont be up there accepting an award tonight . That is absolutely it i mean, you spend your career. You do the good work you dont think about the fact that, oh, im going to get this, or im going to get that, or whatever. It would be nice, but you really do the good work so when oprah got up on that stage and said, only 1 in 3,000 people will ever have one of these, and you all are probably not one of them, i was like, okay. There, she set the bar. But then they called my name, and it was like my whole career went in front of me. And i was like, oh, my god. Im 1 in 3,000 [ cheers and applause seth and then i have heard since that you got some, you know, i believe oprah herself reached out after the fact the Vice President reached out its so true. Seth you played deena jones on broadway in dreamgirls. Yes seth and someone else played the same role in cinema reached out to you yes, baby beyonce sent me flowers. [ cheers and applause seth let me tell you that right there, thats a very nice note to get from beyonce. That one goes right in the scrapbook. Yes, it does. Yes, it does then i got the nice phone call from the Vice President. And i was like, kamala, we did it kamala, we did it. Seth exactly its full circle absolutely. Seth obviously, youve been on stage youve been in film and television Abbott Elementary is a wonderful show i guess its a slightly different style for you because it is this mockumentary style. Did you find it did you step right into it . Did you have to learn it because it seems so natural watching you do it. Its a bit of a learning curve. I mean, the fact that the cameras of course, you know the cameras are there. But the cameras are like there and choreography, theyre like there. There were parts of me i did not know people were seeing, and i was like, im getting to the gym. [ laughter ] seth thats how they get you. Thats how they get you i was like, oh, my god but it was all right, you know we had a good time and i love our camera crew they literally have their own choreography they have these little squeegee stools that they work on, and they can spin around and do crazy things, and theyre just so good. Theyre like a part of the cast in a weird way seth the response to this show has been phenomenal across all walks of life. But one of the things i keep hearing that must be so rewarding for everybody involved in the show is how much teachers love it. Do you just hear constantly from people in the teaching profession i constantly hear from all kinds of educators teachers, principals, everybody. But especially the teachers saying, finally, we are not the butt of the joke we are the heart of the show. Seth yeah. [ cheers and applause thank you and its just its just so wonderful to hear from them, and when they say things to you like, i feel seen i feel understood. And im like, honeys, everybody got a feeling for what you all go through through the pandemic. All those people sending those messages, i had no idea my child was so bad [ laughter ] oh, my god i didnt know this is what you go through im sorry i didnt show up to the parentteacher meeting. All of that. But i know finally they know that we understand and honest to god, teachers really deserve much more they deserve more they respect, more pay, more of everything in the classroom. [ cheers and applause seth absolutely. Your father was an educator. Yes seth did you try to borrow anything in your character from the way your father taught my dad is my lifelong angel he was a lifelong learner. In fact, when i hit that center stage, and i was about to ready to just break down, i could hear my father say, dont you dare this is your moment. Make sure they know who you are. [ laughter ] i could hear him but for barbara howard, i really, really lean into my auntie carolyn, who was a reluctant teacherturnedblue ribbon principal who actually had the queen of england at her school twice because she dared to ask her to come seth oh, man, thats amazing. And to come back how about that. And sip that tea i was like, yes, auntie carolyn. You go, bunker hill. She did that. Seth we talked about your relationship with the stage. This is very exciting. Youre producing a play thats, i believe, starting is it starting previews in a couple weeks . Its starting previews in 11 days in the new James Earl Jones theater seth well, thats fantastic. Yes [ cheers and applause seth i know this is a this is a play by a very prolific playwright who we might not know but whats really impressive is how long shes been doing this you know what i tell people if you dont make it at 20, you can make it at 30. You can make it at 40. You can make it at 50. You can make it at 60. Well, the writer of this play, the ohio state murders, ms. Kennedy, she is 91yearsold [ cheers and applause so dont you ever, ever give up on your dreams shes 91 years old im like, you go, girl. Of course, i got to be a part of this and Audra Mcdonald too and directed by kenny leon im like, come on, we got to get halfway to egot, at least halfway. Seth just dont try to do it all in one year. There you go. But one never knows. Seth you could be the first egot in one calendar year. How about that . That would be good seth that would be not bad 22 has been a very good year seth maybe youll grab the g on your new Christmas Song what is the title of your new Christmas Song sleigh. Seth sleigh . Sleigh. Seth okay. But not slay . No. Sleigh. Seth okay. But it all depends on how you say it, because we are going to slay seth yeah, ive never heard santa say it like that [ laughter ] hes never said it like that well, im very excited to hear that man, what an honor just to see you again. Okay. Were going to make an omelet today, a french omelet seth french. What makes it french its very difficult seth okay. Its the most difficult thing you can do with eggs seth is it really . Da coupats of but in a pan eth aight were sing on like m. We want the pan to get nice and ho the butter is going to get foamy. But while that happens, im going to let you know whats going to happen because once the eggs go in the pan, its going to be fast seth we dont have a lot of time once the eggs go in youre going to stay with me. Seth okay. Great. Okay, you got two spatulas. Seth i like that youre talking to me like my pulse is going. No. Okay [ laughter ] seth stay with me were getting foamy its almost time two spatulas youre going to use your big spatula for scraping the bowl and for folding the omelet seth okay. Were going to use the little one seth do we have the drink now . No. Youre going to have the little one for scrambling seth so what do we do now . Its foamy. Turn it down to four seth okay. We were on eight now were down to four now scrape in your eggs with the big spatula. Seth okay. Big spatula. Scraping in the eggs keep that close by. Were going to switch to the little guy seth back to the little spatula. Got it lets bring it up to six. I think we can take it seth bring it up to six. I agree. Four was bad okay. [ light laughter ] seth okay. Tiny swift circles. Seth oh, tiny circles. We want creamy, teeny curds tiny swift circles seth this is looking great so far move the pan. Seth move the pan. Oh, my god move the spatula. Scrape the outside seth can i have my drink now . M getting thakes yet youre so close. His cooks makepuck m seth oh,lly . Youre going to spread this out into a nice seth ooh, spread it out flat good idea. Why do have i so many [ laughter ] youre doing great. It looks amazing seth mine doesnt look like yours although ive been doing it the same way. Its looking so good. Seth you gave me bum eggs. You know it. That looks perfect. Seth okay. Now you see its getting kind of set we have one solid mass seth yep one continuous mass see how it moves together as one in the pan seth it does, yeah i like mine with some gaps, okay yeah, its great. [ light laughter ] ready to dismount. Seth okay. Great. So this is looking nice seth okay. Were going to turn this off the heat youre going to flip the bottom third over the middle third. Seth okay. Were going to flip your grip [ laughter ] you want no color on those eggs. Thats very important. You want to tilt the first bit over while holding the middle part over. Seth mmhmm. And its going to like fold youre going to get really, nice even shape wow, thats perfect. Now, take a cube of butter [ laughter ] seth thank you rub it over the top so it gets really nice and glossy, right . Were going to finish it with a little kosher salt that looks amazing for a first omelet, thats very good seth thats really thank you so much. Should we trade . And now its dinner seth okay, thats it we made it we made it. Seth oh, my god. This is such a lovely brunch that cooked up so fast we dont have silverware you know what but we have drinks [ laughter ] seth all right cheers cheers. Seth thats wonderful. Thank you so much. [ cheers and applause so youve got your show. Yes seth youve got your show. Your host is dan levy from schitts creek. Yes seth and do you like being a chef do you like judging . Its a little intimidating having to give feedback. But then once you get into it, its kind of similar to being in a kitchen because youre always giving feedback to cooks so its the same but a lot of people are watching. Seth and do you drink during the judging . Yes seth do you find that makes judging easier, or do you find it makes you meaner . No. I think it makes everything better you should have some of that [ laughter ] this is my favorite brunch beverage seth what is it . Its just whiskey seth okay. [ laughter ] so i guess if we were wondering if people at home are like, how do i make that, you would just put whiskey in a glass . Sometimes theres ice seth sometimes theres ice yeah. Seth this seems cold did you put ice in it earlier . There was ice in here, yeah seth so being on tv, do you ever feel bad for the chefs because you obviously have been a chef for a long time but have you ever had to cook under the pressures of being on tv this. Does this count . [ laughter ] seth yeah, this one right here well, obviously you did fine meanwhile, im on tv every night [ bleep ] it up pretty bad [ laughter ] is that your first omelet seth is that my first omelet yeah. Seth yeah. Yeah, thats good seth i mean, i think its the first omelet where i was like trying to make it look good i think its seth have you ever seen somebody eat it with a spatula like this . Thats a first for me so first for everyone. Seth yeah, you know what it tastes great. You should just make a sandwich seth what . Just make a sandwich. Seth okay. Great. How much time do we have i have a minute to make a sandwich all right, great and now this is very interesting to me. Your parents your first job in food, tell me where your first job in food was. It was at a baskin robbins. Seth okay. There used to be frozen yogurt then. So i would just stand by the frozen yogurt machine and make the little seth and did your parents at the time go, like, youve got a knack for it no. [ laughter ] thats not what we were aiming for. Seth are they excited about the fact that you became a chef . Uh [ laughter ] i think youre a chef now. Yeah, thats a beautiful sandwich seth it really is delicious. I mean, i feel like i didnt do much, but this is like the best omelet ive ever had [ laughter ] in 15 minutes, you could do this every day seth i mean i got 15 minutes the problem is i feel like if i make one, my kids will want one. Thats how you get the practice in, yeah . Seth yeah, thats true but i got three kids now were talking an hour. [ laughter ] thats basically a thats an egg station seth hmmmm. Yeah. Seth you think i should install an egg station no. You will become the egg station. Seth oh. Station has been inside of me the whole time yes [ laughter ] definitely seth sohla, this was wonderful.
