Evacuation areas. They will theres zero containment on any of these fires. 1,500 structures have been burned and that includes homes, businesses. In sulfur county fire has burned 2,500 acres, but that one is 5 contained. Ee know of ten confirmed fatalities as a result. Six burned victims we do know have been flown to san francisco. San francisco memorial has received some of the victims there. Some of them are in critical condition. Again, this is has been a very long and devastating 24 hours. Fires are still burning where flames destroyed several businesses in santa rosa today. Reporter i just talked to a homeowner who lives on monticello road just a few doors down that way. When we caught up with him, he was actually coming out of his house. He had a few belongings in his arm, and he was locking the gate at the base of his driveway. He was leaving and had an rv parked out front and with the motor running. He said he had actually stayed last night over night through the main part of the fire, planned to stay tonight as well but at the last moment had a change of heart. Heres what he had to say. I came back, got setup, got my generator going, power running to the house. I have a 6yearold son, and i have him with me. And i just waited until nightfall came down and just saw the flames on the other side of the hill. I just kpt go to sleep at night knowing that no one would wake me up, that no one was here. Reporter what is your plan here now . Youve got a rig. Yeah, ive got my motor home. Im going to go over and stay in front of a friends house and were going to wait it out and come back in the morning and see how things go. And ill probably reevaluate tomorrow night and see where the fire is at. Im probably get in my motor home and go back over to my friends house. They said the power was supposed to be on about noon today. So thats why i was waiting to see if power came on. It never did. And then i started hearing all these things happening in santa rosa, and im a local. I know all these places intimately. And i just thought its just not safe. Im going to leave. And where is your son now . Is he still with you . Yeah, hes in the motor home. My daughters staying with her best friend. Reporter can you explain how it feels to live through Something Like this. Its kind of eerie. I served in the military, so this kind of thing doesnt bother me a whole lot. But it was like a ghost town down here. I checked out of thesi avenues, and there was no one there. No power, no life. It just felt like you walked through a ghost town. That was the eeriest part of the whole thing. Reporter it was eerie, and hes talking about when the sun was still up. Now its pitchblack and the all vehicles we see out here are fire deputies, engines and these sort of things. Off they go to stay somewhere safe for the night. As i say, he did stay in his house through the fire last night. He said at one point he thinks it burned about a s16th of a mie to his home. He didnt think hed be able to get any sleep at his home tonight. But hell be back tomorrow, check it out and sort of take it one step at a time. Live in napa county, katey mar swrulo. Much different scene tonight in terms of the weather, thankfully than we saw 24 hours ago when these fires broke out. What are we facing in the hours ahead. This time last night winds were racing over 40 miles an hour. And the reason why we had what is called a down sloping wind effect, its very unique to our area thanks to the hills. Essentially we have two opposing forces, High Pressure and low pressure. And it creates a wind tunnel effect. And those winds as they approach the hills and go down the hills, the air actually heats and compresses flowing down our hills. And what that does, the air temperature rises the wind speed up. It drives out our atmosphere, and that is just conseussive for those fires to not only quickly start but quickly spread. The encouraging news at this hour, those winds that were so active earlier this morning, its quite a different picture tonight. And this is what we want to see. We want those winds to back off. Essentially calm winds in nev, 9 in fairfield. Thetes about 40 miles an hour difference from where we were about 24 hours ago. Even in your hills about 1,000, 2,000 feet in our air were not all that breezy. So the winds will be the Biggest Issue going through the next 24 hours. Future tractor wint gusts as we walk you through hour by hour, firefighters are going to have about a 24hour window from now to have these winds that are essentially less than 10 miles an hour. The winds are going to be on their side. But what we are watching, you do notice those winds later tomorrow night do increase a little bit. Tomorrow morning the winds are essentially calm in the north bay. Thats great news for the efforts up in the north bay. But what were watching you get into late tomorrow night and especially early in the morning on wednesday it does look like those winds along the coast and in parts of the north bay are going to pick up. We do have a 24hour window right now of those winds cooperating. Moisture is also increasing at this hour. The humidity levels are on the rise. Earlier we had humidity levels between 10 and 14 in the north bay. Right now those numbers have tripled. Were at 44 , and 56 . And the winds are relaxing and thats just a recipe for firefighters to be able to have a greater handle on this situation. It looks like we will at least keep these levels through the Early Morning hours on tuesday. And i think officials have seen the encouraging news. Because we do notice that the red flag warning has been pulled back to just the north bay, where we had those fires at this hour. So that high fire danger still exists where were tracking the numerous fires in the north bay. The fear is any of those embers from inactive fires right now could start other fires in the region. Something firefighters are keeping in the back of their mind as they battle these fires. Air quality also an issue right now. The north bay where we have those fires is seeing very unhealthy air quality at this hour. Certainly thick smoke is blanketing the north bay. Some of that has wafted into other parts of the bay area as well. You can see the coast, inland and even santa clara valley, the air quality is moderate. So the key take away is if you have respiratory issues, you want to limit your time outside. And we have some good information on abc7news. Com if that does include you, how you can stay safe under these conditions with the smoke in the air. Once again, heres the big take away, the surface winds at this hour are calm. They will stay that way at least the next 24 hours. The humidity is rising, so those two ingredients are certainly going to help right now in the north bay. Well, fires are still still burning where flames destroyed today. Were joined now near highway 101 with the latest. Katie. Reporter i can echo what drew has been saying. There is little to no wind tonight. And getting much cooler. I had to put on a jacket here in the last halfhour. Thats certainly good conditions for firefighters. If you take a look at the hill behind me, that is Fountain Grove parkway. North of Fountain Grove parkway, had hills which burned earlier today, still smoldering. When fires get that hot, that instant, theres not really much firefighters can do but let it burn. Theres very little wind. I can also say that appears to be affecting the air quality as well as some of that smoke is really just settling along the valley in the hillside. And it is still raining ash to some degree. So quite irritating for people who have lung issues, breathing issues. There is a lot of smoke still in the air as many places continue to burn tonight. Driving up along 101 i can tell you many exits along santa rosa are closed off. And there are also guardrails on fire, the metal kind of bent and mangled. But burning still tonight. And there are other hot spots firefighters are working on. To west of 101 we have seen fire crews thatter appear to be working ibneighborhoods. It appears to be further in the distance at this point, but the power is out. Its hard to see much of anything unless you get a shot of the emergency crew lights and generators and spotlights firefighters have brought in to help aluminate the scene. I can tell you there does appear to be a crew at the bottom of that hill were looking at. And i can imagine theyre trying to protect santa rosa, just south of that fire. As we know earlier today they had to evacuate that hospital. And we saw dramatic images of people being wheeled out of the hospital. They were then moved to santa rosa memorial hospital, which also a level 2 trauma center. And that hospital saw many burn patients from this region. But if i could recap tonight, a lot of people still on the roadway. A lot of Emergency Personnel on the roadway. And the power is out. That means there are no stoplights. People are treating the stoplights as a fourway intersection, thankfully stopping, being very courteous. But if you dont have to be out on the road tonight, fire personnel, emergency crews are really hoping you stay out of the way. As we know there is 0 containment. So firefighters are moving quickly to put out any hot spots and flareups. Okay, katie, thanks so much. Its been a devastating scene between santa rosa and kenwood where homes have burned to the ground. Reporter right now we are at tree haven lane in kenwood, which is about i would say 20 to 30 minutes from where we were. So that gives you an idea of how these fires incredibly so have spread throughout napa and sonoma counties. Behind me, well, you can see right there gas burning. Thats going to burn for a very long time. But this was somebodys house, again, kenwood. As you can see here i guess this was, if we can make it out, the garage obviously because of the cars. But also the washer, the dryer. This was the backyard because you have the barbecue or whatevers left of it. And this is the area look at i mean these pots just burned, gone. I guess this is the backyard. This im assuming is another home, somebody elses home. I dont think its their home. But this structure is gone. And right behind me is a Swimming Pool right here. Yeah, thats probably the only thing left. Look at this. Flippers melted. Ugh, gosh. And then over here we have some fires. Im assuming that this may have been the entrance to the home, but we have some fires burning there. And just everything around here burnt the trees. And what is amazing is that you walk around here and you may find two or three homes completely gone, devastated and then just if you can pan just for a second to see across the street from this one, that house was fine. We just checked it out. And the only thing there was the garage suffered some damage. But the house is fine. Its just it was a hit and miss situation here. So, yeah, thats what were finding here in kenwood. And yeah, just a lot of devastation and nothing to come back to. Again, im in kenwood, abc 7 news. All right, leanne, great work as always. An Incident Command Center has been setup at the Sonoma County fairgrounds. Reporter im here at the fairgrounds in sonoma. You can see here the fairground. Theyre turning this isnt it true an Incident Command Center for the next few days. You can see here setting up a kitchen. They expect to be able to serve up to 3,000 firefighters starting tomorrow morning. They have so many firefighters out there on the lines right now. In fact, they dont know how many firefighters they have. Thats one of the duties they have over night trying to figure out exactly whos out there, how many crews and how many people. Yu can see with a fast moving wildfire, they have crews just responding quickly. Some of these smaller stations will send their crews out there and working. Cal fire tonight will be trying to figure out how many people they have and add up all those assets. They also are setting up a Logistics Center here. Theyll be holding brief gsz here tomorrow morning starting here at about 11 00 a. M. They have people here working on the financial aspects of it, how to get reimbursed for all this activity. This will be really a lot of activity in this field tonight, setting up housing, setting up food. As i said before, tents are showing up. Activities all night long. Reporting in Sonoma County at the fairgrounds, abc 7 news. Evacuation centers have been setup in napa and sonoma counties. And here are ones that still have room this evening. Theres one at Napa Valley Junior College on highway 121. In Sonoma County, Lc Allen High School at 599 bell view santa rosa is open to evacuees. New life church is taking in evacuees. Ana Lee High School at 5960 ana Lee High School. And neighbors in the Woodland Valley area are being evacuated to Sonoma Community college in fairfield. The Healdsburg Community center has just opened as an vacation center. Also the reactional facility is open, too. Thats located at 7121 burton avenue. During a croesus you often see ordinary people turn into extraordinary heroes. And we have one such story tonight. A Maintenance Manager at a complex literally went doortodoor helping to evacuate people. Robert gutierrez describes what happened there. It just happened so quick, you know, that wind was really like howling and stuff. And it was just like, you know, a dream. Or a nightmare perhaps. Because of power issues some people were trapped inside their garages. So gutierrez manually pulled the doors open so they could get their cars out. Lots of kids and families enjoy going to safari west wild animal park. Well, tonight that park in santa rosa evacuated. So many people have been asking about this. Heres theyre update. As of now the fences stand and animals are accounted for. At no point were fences cut or safari employees released. The situation remains highly dangerous as fires are burning in the vicinity. We continue to provide new updates. Our reporters have done a terrific job of taking you into the most affected areas so you can get a sense of how badly this fragied is. And right now one of those areas enSonoma County along highway 12. Reporter theres a barricade thats been set up here because highway 12 beyond this point is closed to traffic. We happen up in glen allen earlier this evening, and it is dangerous driving through there. But well show you some video of what we shot earlier today. Power lines are down, trees are down. And there are fires on either side of the highway from vegetation fires to structure fires. The homes to the west of highway 12, the homes along done bar road were especially hard hit. Around half the homes seemed to have been destroyed by flames. Residents left in the middle of the night, so many unsure whether theyre homes are still standing. We did talk to one man who chose not to leave. Hes been at his home for the whole time, and so far so good. I havent had water since about 6 30 ae a. M. I have wet dirt, shoveling grass, wet dirt, food fences to create a break. Just anything i can do save. The fire was coming around this side, and i stopped it. Ask on this side, i had about ten minutes before the house was going to go up, and thats when the fireman showed up. I lost a few structures in the back. I lust a kennel in the back. We had dogs back there. But the dogs are gone, the horses are gone. But what i saved is the house. Reporter how are you holding up . I havent had the chance to let my guard down yet. They say you can be you dont know how strong you can be until strong is your only option. Thats where im at right now. Reporter back here live at mudrone road and highway 12, periodically weve been seeing people choosing to pull over and park. Theyve been coming here to get information from the Police Officers stationed at this intersection and to talk to others who came to do the same. So a lot of information gathering as people wait anxiously for the threat to be over. Liechb in Sonoma County, lillian kim, abc 7 news. Well, kate cist shared a picture we want to show you now of the fire in sonoma. This is the view behind what is of californias oldest family owned winery. Well try to show you that picture here in a moment. There it is. Ask the winery has been here since 1858. Take a look otthoat those massi plumes of smoke. The wind seems to have died down. Of course that is echoed by our meteorologist drew tuma. And hopefully theyll stay that for a lot longer. Yeah, theyre thinking about a good 24 hours. Abc 7 reporter Cornell Bernard has been centered in north santa rosa all day. Heres a look at the destruction. Reporter we are still assessing the damage here. This is center of of homes and condose, a Shopping Center which continues to smolder just about a hundred yards from where were standing. You have to remember these were peoples homes, these were peoples lives. And these are the back yards of these homes. This was an out door table someone had in their backyard. Heres a patio set, someones patio here in Fountain Grove village. The damage, you really have to see it to believe it. The only way we can really understand how many homes at least in this particular neighborhood and keep in mind we think there are at least 200 homes every gas main that seems to be that is an indication of homes may be. Just trying to figure out what this place once looked like. We talked to one man in the last hour who said he went doortodoor about 12 30 warning his neighbors saying the fire is coming. He said he felt weird because it was too late to be knocking on someones door, but he really had no choice. We see some folks possibly in the distance seeing what is left of their home possibly for the first time. It is unclear how foelks are getting in here because it is a police barricade. We have been to so many neighborhoods from glen allen to kenwood, to Lincoln Valley in sant aa rosa where homes have been lost. We talked to one man earlier today who was just coming back to see there was nothing left of his house. When we came back you could see the homes there and we got the word we were on fire. Been here 20 years, it was a great neighborhood. Its going to be a lot of work getting it back. Reporter what are you thinking when youre seeing this . Im thinking im glad im insured. Yeah, its not an easy thing to take. Reporter sir, we are so sorry. We are so sorry. Oh, its Mother Nature at her worst, i guess. Reporter we certainly wish john drafbs and the his family the best. What a remarkable man and attitude. He says he plans to rebuild. He built that house 25 years ago in Lincoln Valley. Again, assessing the damage here home after home, its really startling how many homes have been lost here. Back to you guys. Well, new developments on the atlas fire. Thats one burning in napa county. We have learned that mandatory vacations have been ordered for the other side of the fire in salono county. So that is happening tonight. Issued for several streets west of fairfield. Were joined live from the vacation zone where people are now being forced from their homes. Melanie. Reporter yeah, right now were standing in the parking lot of susoon valley k through 8. And you can see a number of fire crews out here. These firefighters are with susoon fire. Ask theyve told me this has become a staging area for them. They are waiting for their marching orders. We can tell you there are two vacations in this area right now. They are joyce lane and twin sisters road. It was here in the parking lot of susoon valley k through 8 that we met katelyn bach. And talk to me about being evacuated tonight and how did that happen . It was actually very scary. We had Police Officers on the mountain telling us we had to go. Weve been in vacation preparedness all day long, so i actually had stuff to be packed and ready to go. And so as soon as we got word, we were down here waiting and just watching to see what happens. Reporter i know this is really emotional for you. You shared with us a few moments ago that you have experienced tragedy in this exact location before. Yeah, it was actually before all the remodel. But my husband was actually my fiance was actually killed right here on a motorcycle. And me and my son and stepdaughter pulled up to it. So i watched my husband die right here, and im possibly watching our home get burned. Reporter im so sorry. I know youre even able to watch on your phone. You have cameras set up. And youre watching to see whether the fire will cross that ridge. Yes, i have motion detecters, everything. And hopefully im not watching my house burn down. But praying, and if anything happens then i have it. So, well, yeah. Reporter and most importantly your son, your 2yearold son is here. Hes sleeping in the car, right . Yeah, passed out, warm, and thats the most important. And ive got daddy and brothers ashes waiting back at my sisters house. Reporter so safekeeping there. Safekeeping there. Reporter and you had to have one of those difficult, Difficult Conversations as a mother with a little boy that 2 years old that doesnt really understand whats happening here. And tell us about that. I had to have the conversation of if we didnt have a home to come to, if he was okay with that. And i know hes 2, but he just looked a at me and said, yes, mommy, its okay. Its going to be okay. So knowing him, i know his dad and his brother are next to him and trying to show me comfort and making sure hes a strong 2yearold boy showing comfort for his mom. Reporter most important thing, right, is that youre okay, hes okay . Yes, for sure. Reporter and anything else can be replaced. And were so glad you are okay. I know this is hard for you. I thank you for talking to us. Thank you very much. Reporter so this is the sentiment here. Tragedy for this family thats been through so much in a short period of two years and is looking for a break. And this is just one story, one family. And there are so many stories that will come from this. Hundreds of homes weve heard about, and this is one family patiently waiting here in this parking lot and hing their home will be okay. You can see a couple of these fire crews here over my shoulder, and theyre waiting to find out where they will be going tonight, just waiting for their marching orders so to speak. And this has become almost an imp promptu staging area. People havent been told to come here, but just gathering. As people fall into this parking lot, theyre asking has the fire drossed the ridge. And thats what theyre waiting to see so they will know whether or not their homes are in jeopardy. Melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. A lot of people are going to know someones whos affected by this fire. And you just found out. Earlier in the morning i found out a friend of mine marked safe, facebook has that feature. But now im learning my friend at lived in santa rosa for a long time, they lost their home. They got out safely, thats the good news. Their girls are fine, pets are fine, but they lost everything. I see. Thousands of stories. And theres going to be lots of these stories. Thanks for sharing that. Thats very difficult. Theres heightened security tonight at the scene of the tubbs fire in santa rosa. 6 45 at night imposed curfews where they have been mandatory vacations until sunrise tomorrow morning. That of course for the safety of the people in the area and allow First Responders to get through and get the situation under control as soon as possible. Anybody who is out in those hours, in the mandatory vacation zones will be subject to stop and potentially arrest if they refuse to either go back inside or leave the areas. In this case, they would have to leave the mandatory vacation zone. Theres already been reports of looting. But lets not over state the looting problem. It is not significant. Theres just been a few isolated cases as best we can tell. Most people rushing in to do the right thing, but theres always going to be knuckle heads. But they seem to have a pretty good handle on it. At the napa county animal shelter. When you talk about the goodness of people, so many have come out to donate cat and dog supplies there. Reporter they most certainly have. While the kennels are filled with dogs ask cats, the lobbies are filled with food. The napa county may be known for its grapes, but theres plaent of farming here, too. And that includes a lot of live stock. So far theyve taken in alpacas, chickens, geese and one surprisingly wellbehaved goat. Theyre ls almost at capacity for that sort of animal at one point. They even had a pasture out back to run around in. But things are getting crowded. And they say a lot of those animals are bit shaken up by change of scenery. As for dogs and cats, they still have room for more, but not all of them are here in this building. I think it was pretty much prier to katrina, when people were forced to evacuate, they wouldnt evacuate because they couldnt bring their pets. But since katrina, the red cross are working hand in hand in animal shelters. Now theyre setting up shelters so people can be with her pet. Im told a lot of people want to hang out with their pets. And thats pauvgly fine. Good for their pets and good for the people. Reporter and more people are willing to evacuate if they know they can stay close to their furry friends. Of the all dogs they came in, only about six came in without their owners. And a all had mick crow chips, which are vital tool of reuniting owners. They will probably be looking for more food. In fact we just received a tweet from a startup that we profiled just a couple of weeks here, yeah doggy from santa cruz have asked where they can deliver a van load of dog food. So generosity when its needed the most here in napa county. Yeah, thats nice to see, jonathan. Thank you. When the fires began last night in sanlta rosa, a local photographer took a journey through the city. And heres two minutes of what he saw and heard. Trying to make my way around the other entrance. You really get the sense that you were there going through that harrowing journey with him, watching that video. Now take a look at this. This is what members of a Highway Patrol helicopter crew saw when they flew above napa valley just a few hours ago. They continue to perform rescue missions. And as you can see there are still buildings burning along with a large area still on fire tonight. Last night conditions could not have been any worse between the erratic fast, fast winds, were talking hurricane strengthen. A perfect storm. Of course that has changed. Meteorologist drew tuma is here with conditions. You saw that video taken from the chopper that smoke and flames were going directly up into the air. And that is an indication that the winds have relaxed significantly. And thats what were finding outright now. Mind you just 24 hours ago winds were gusting anywhere from 30 to 45 miles an hour in the north bay. So you can see its a dramatically different picture tonight. And this is the picture we want to see. We want these winds to be as low as possible. Calm winds in nevada, light winds in napa and fairfield. Anywhere from 3 to 9 miles an hour at this hour. Even saz you go into Higher Elevation into our hills where typically you would expect the winds to increase, they are not all that active. They are breezy, but they had been much more active earlier this morning. Knoxville creek at just 5 miles an hour. Atlas peak, its at 19. And that wind direction as shifted. As you recall a lot of people across the region in san francisco, oakland, pittsburgh, brentwood, they were smelling the smoke, seeing the ash falling where they lived late last night. Thats because the wend direction was pushing the smoke south. Any smoke now you can see is going to be pushed away from the bay area. Right now the smoke is really confined. Unfortunately its thick in spots but confined right now mainly in the north bay in the densest spots. Future tracker wind gusts show yugoslavia we had encouraging news for those on the front lines right now trying to contain what is numerous fires that has dotted the landscape in the north bay. We get you through late tonight into early tomorrow morning, and the winds remain very light in nature. Less than 5 miles an hour at least through midday tomorrow. And then as we go into the evening on tuesday likely the winds are going to increase a bit. But nowhere near the levels they were at last night that caused these fires to rapidly spread across the north bay. So we have a really good window right now, say the next 18 to 24 hours that firefighters can just get these flames contained a bit better since the winds arent so active. Future tracker wind gusts will get you into tomorrow afternoon. Still seeing those winds less than 10 miles an hour into the north bay as. As we go into the over night hours and early tomorrow morning, they are going to increase especially along the coast and parts of the north bay wednesday morning. Fairfield about to 20 miles an hour. So once again we have this really good window of opportunities for the next 18 to 24 hours that the winds are calm, and also the relative humidity is going to be increasing. We saw humidity levels if you recall watching us late last night or early this morning, those humidity levels were at 10 , 14 in the north bay. You can see those numbers have kwu drupealled, tripled in areas. So the humidity is rising and that is good news. We want the hupidity to rise and wind to decrease. Humidity levels will stay that way through the Early Morning hours on tuesday. Those two things are going to be the ingredients to help firefighters right now. Still have that red flag warning in effect for the north bay, where we have those active fires right now. Because any embers that get thrown up into the atmosphere could easily spread or start a fire. We had those fires right nouch they are putting out a tremendous amount of smoke. We have seen that from our aerials from sky 7 earlier today. That will be the issue tonight. East bay and santa clara valley, its moderate conditions. That means if you have respiratory issues you want to limit how much time you are outside because the air quality is unhealthy. I want to quickly touch on the rest of the regions weather. Were in the 50s and 60s right now for the most part. Ask those numbers are going to cool off later tonight. We are going to cool off pretty nicely in the north bay dropping into the 40s. So a bit of a chill going to set in the north bay with calm winds and haze in the atmosphere. Well drop into the 40s and 50s across the rest of the region. We will have a bit of patchy fog on the coastline. But were not seeing anything in terms of incredible heat. Temperatures pretty much where they should be this time of year. So thats another factor working in favor of firefighters in the north bay. Those temperatures not too hot during the day. They continue to fight those fires. About 78 in san jose, 75 in oakland. The accuweather forecast is going to show you we stay pretty nice and cool over the next couple of days. You see wednesday and thursday especially its feeling much more like fall. Well have those winds increasing in the north bay. Littleinate way of change as you get into the friday. And then a slight bit of a warm up as you get into the weekend. But nowhere near in term as impressive warmth in the six seven days. Big take away that the winds, and we are thankfully seeing these numbers so low right now. 3 miles an hour in napa, 9 in fairfield. Those winds are certainly helping. The efforts we saw right now, we saw those images from the helicopters, the flames, the smoke is going up into the atmosphere. We heard many reporters outright now, katie she was telling us its calming down in the north bay. And the winds doing the same thing. 16 enatlas peak. So really the big take away, i want to show you this map one more time, the gusts over the next 24 hours. Theres this key window were looking at, the next 18 to about 24 hours you can see the winds are generally less than 5 miles an hour. And that is lasting through midday tomorrow. And then theyre going to about 14 to 15 miles an hour. We have the winds that are very light at this hour through the midday hour. We have the relative humidity, which is rising as well. Thats putting more moisture in the atmosphere. And overnight tonight the temperatures are going to drop into the 40s. So those three things coming together and helping firefighters to get more of a containment of what is just numerous fires around the north bay. Well have to keep an eye on those winds especially tomorrow night to hope they dont increase that much. Abc 7 reporter Laura Anthony was up in the hills near the silverado country club. Our house has miraculously been saved. Just devastation. I kind of had a feel, but we rushed out of here about 10 00 at night. And tried to get my wife and i and kids outs of there and get the neighbors to respond to my honking. I tried to knock on as much doors as i could. I knocked on door which no longer is a house. The words cant describe what i dont even know how im going to even live here even with the house being intact. Its just devastating now. Reporter would you say there was panic last night . I didnt see the panic, no. I didnt see it. And i thought that everybody left silverado. I was in the front, and i was probably one of the first to evacuate because i didnt see any cars. Is and then all of a sudden it was just bumper to bumper right at the front there at the country club. I stayed at the fire station over there. And it was pretty much normal. People were just evacuating and getting out of silverado country club. Reporter and you talked about you were honking your horn trying to get peoples attention. Yeah, because i wasnt aware there was a fire. Usually weve been through this before where there was like an emergency line, and this time there wasnt. The only person who informed me was actually my landscaper. He texted me, and i wasnt going to answer the phone late at night. And then when the texting came and he told me there was a fire, he said oh, that was something that happened earlier in the day. And i said, okay, the phone calls, the texting, let me look out my front door. And it was just like hell had come upon us. The flames were just, i mean, hovering over the crest over here. And i say within minutes i told my kids to come. We grabbed i grabbed my pistol and my cellphone. Thats what i and im here to pick up a couple of things, and now it could burn. I dont care because i dont know if i could live here anymore. The devastation of these homes, its just remarkable. I couldnt believe it. So not only are the scenes weve been recording so dramatic, but some of the people like that gentleman we met are really powerful and inspirational and really impressive. So compelling. Most of our attention has been focused on the north bay fires. But further north has been forcing people out of their homes. Thats right. Its called the sulfur fire. Police have told people to stay out of the mandatory vacation areas. And residents are hoping looters dont pray on their empty houses. Evacuated this morning about 37b, maybe earlier. I thought it was very annoying all these emergency vehicles were making so much noise i couldnt get to sleep. And then somebody rang my doorbell and saying get out, well we could have waited a couple of hours. So i let my big cat out to inside. And im scared of looting because i left my door unlocked. Another was burned to the ground. This one is the journeys end mobile home park. A neighbor has told abc 7 news that its a 55 years of age and older mobile home park. So folks 55 years and up. When our camera was rolling there was no one there, so we hope everyone got out safely. And getting people out safely is the priority certainly for firefighters. This fire is 20 acres now. So its burned all the way into the sapta rosa, which is quite a few miles. So theres a large population, thousands of people affected by this fire. And the explosive rate of growth and how fast its pushed into this area, its just main priority getting people out of the way. That fire expected to surge and ebb throughout the day and evening depending on the winds. As you heard firefighters making sure everyone gets out of harms way. And we hope the weather continues to cooperate for a while longer. And we share this video in Sonoma County near hiway 12. You can see the neighborhood doesnt exist anymore. And one of the many gas fed fires still going. This is the result of a fire. But if we came on and told you this was the result of a missile strike, you would believe us because the damage is so absolutely remarkable and complete. The fire swept through the area earlier this morning leaving skeletal remains of those homes. We seconds one resident how was she got out of her house. We didnt learn about the fire until quite a bit later after it started. So we packed up things around 4 00 this morning and drove down the hill and went through a fire area. Had to clear a lot of debris and branches off the road. Our cornell bar ned reports that was a mass exodus out of the valley of the moon. And cornell saw people as far as away as nevada trying to drive to safety. At least ten homes have been destroyed at codington home park in santa rosa. There are more than 1,700 homes in that park. Homes went up but others were saved. I knew it was going to be a disaster. It was just going down, down, down. Our next door neighbors porch got hit. And i dont know. Something was watching over us. It seems like a miracle. Absolute miracle. Everyone was evacuated from the park. No injuries have been reported there. Now, emergency crews have been working through the day to help people leave their homes. Yeah, we talked to people in napa county who fled their homes with literally just the clothes on their backs. I put on a pair of shorts and shoes, grabbed the dog. And i realized the fire was surrounding us basically and across the road. If you have a mandatory evacuation, if youre in those areas, please follow those instructions. First responders are out there, trying to save lives. And by you following those vacations, youre helping us with that response. I had no shirt. There was a nice gentleman who gave me a shirt, and i in turn gave another couple a leash because they had two dogs and only one leash. Napa county Officials Say its important to evacuate when youre told to do so. Dont stop and get your things because if you do so, you may get trapped. Yeah, every moment is precious. Abc 7 Cornell Bernard has a look at the destruction. Reporter as nightfalls the devastation of this fire continues to be truly unreal. Weve got an eerie glow from broken gas mains all around this neighborhood. Counted dozens of dozens of homes that have been utterly destroyed from that raging fire storm which blew threw here early, early this morning. Theres truly nothing left. In fact for a long time we couldnt tell whether or not these were private homes or a condo complex. We have since learned that they were private homes. The upscale homes built near the Fountain Grove golf course. This is an affluent part of santa rosa. Beautiful parts of the neighborhoods are bluffs over looking the golf course. But so many homes, neighborhood after neighborhood completely gone. A garage door, a broken gas main. Seeing so many of them. Folks had very little notice, very little warning about getting out. Weve seen a lot of cars that have been left in driveways. They have been completely gutted and burned through and through from this fire. In fact so badly burned we cant even recognize the make and model of some of these vehicles. Here we have here a decoration for halloween. Really one of the few things that have survived this fire. Police have setup barricades and roadblocks to keep people out because at this point it is still too unsafe. We have been allowed inside this neighborhood, but we are taking our chances of course. And we know the risks. We have been trained, have safety training. But for folks who want to venture in and check out whats been lost, its just simply too dangerous. As we come down here one of the few things that remains intact is that uhaul truck, the back of it is singed, but most of it is still intact. Its unclear if somebody was moving in or moving out. Scenes of devastation continue pretty much everywhere. And for most of the day we were seeing active fires to the north and to the south of us. For now it seems like the smoke has dissipated just a bit. And its going to be days before we actually know how badly the damage is around here. In sapta rosa, Cornell Bernard, abc 7 news. The napa county shelter filled tonight not only with animals but with pet food. She began taking in animals from fire victims around 2 30 this morning, and then pet food donations just begin to arrive. Most from people who volunteer or customers who know there are animals in need right now. Our normal average capacity including the chickens we normally have here is anywhere from 200 to 230. Weve taken over 100 animals today. Animals dropped off at the shelter include lamas, even a goat. Police who were forced to evacuate can do so with their animals. Small household animals can be taken to the napa county animal shelter. And large animals can be taken to the santa ana fairgrounds in santa rosa. She saw some incredible devastation. Heres some of what she saw. I came down through hillcrest, and i believe it was the 2,000 block. And homes are burning still one after another. Theres no air support. There is no helicopters. Well, the fires sporadic, its all over. Were trying to get every resource to help us get a better idea of where the fire is heading, where is it going. The primary responsibility through the night had just been getting people out of here. Its a great neighborhood, great neighbors. But its tough. These people are losing their homes. I tried to knock on as much doors as i could. I knocked on bouleas door which now is no longer a house. I just the words cant describe what i dont even know how im even going to live here. The waters off. And ive got two buckets and im trying to go around and douse any live flames i see. Yeah, i think the worst part is you drive around here and you know some of the people, and you know this is their lifes belongings. And they didnt have time to get it out. And its just a really sad situation. All right, just some of the scenes from Laura Anthony today who was really in some of the worst hit areas. Lets put out one more call. You mentioned this at the beginning of this broadcast, but theyre still asking for emergency help. The chalk hill ranch nears heldbering, they have 54 horses in dire need. 7074331804, those horses need to be taken off the ranch. Absolutely. And most of these vacations happen in the middle of the night or midnight or after. And as a result people grab ld a hurry at their homes. If they were lucky they got their cat or dog. Many were not even able to do that. But certainly in the middle of the night getting live stock or horses out or lama that we heard was rescued were impossible for people to do. So in the next couple of days maybe these animals roving around confused and not knowing what to do. So youre going to see more stories of animals being rescued in the days ahead.
