Of the more than 53,000 cases across the u. S. About 700 people have now died nationwide. Another sign of how dramatically the world has changed the summer olympics have been postponed until next year. On wall street today, the dow had its biggest oneday gain since 1933, after congress signaled it is very close to an agreement on the largest stimulus bill in history. Were talking about more than 2 trillion. So were going to begin tonight with meg oliver, who is at the center of the crisis there in new york city. And, meg, i understand there is some breaking news tonight for people who have been in new york in the last two weeks, right . Reporter thats exactly right, norah. We just heard a stunning announcement from the White House Task force. Anyone who recently left new york city or who has spent time here in the last few days should selfquarantine for the next 14 days, just proving how quickly this virus is spreading. We havent flattened the curve, and the curve is actually increasing. Reporter today, a stark warning with the peak of the pandemic just 14 to 21 days away, new York Governor Andrew Cuomo told the country to sit up and Pay Attention to new york. Where we are today, you will be in three weeks or four weeks. We are your future. Reporter with nearly one out of four new york coronavirus patients in intensive care, cuomo outlined a desperate need 40,000 more i. C. U. Beds and 30,000 ventilators. Where are they . Where are the ventilators . Reporter Vice President pence responded a couple hours later. Earlier today, fema, from the national stockpile, shipped 2,000 ventilators to the state of new york, and tomorrow, there will be another 2,000. Reporter though, for the governor, it is not nearly enough. You pick the 26,000 people who are going to die. Reporter in teaneck, new jersey, the crisis is just as dire. Its incredible, it hit so fast. Reporter dr. Suraj saggar with Holy Name Medical Center says his entire hospital has just 10 ventilators left and theyre running dangerously low on supplies. How desperate are you for more ventilators . That is a huge concern. Reporter but there are signs of recovery. 32yearold photographer matt shulte tested positive after a shoot in aspen and had severe complications. Hes now recovering in california. Its not clears throat im obviously an example of how it can affect a young, healthy person. But more importantly, its its the effect that you can have on everybody else. Reporter we did get a clue as to how the virus spread so quickly here. White House Task ForceResearch Coordinator deborah birx believes subway riders who touched contaminated metal surfaces where the virus can live for days, may have accelerate the spread. Norah. Odonnell a reminder again about washing hands. Thank you, meg. We turn now to washington where we just heard from the president and his Coronavirus Task force. President trump wants to reopen the country by easter sunday. But Many Public Health experts say that is too soon and could risk a health care catastrophe. Paula reid reports tonight from the white house. Reporter President Trump says he would like to send people back to work in roughly three weeks. Our decision will be based on hard facts and data as to the opening. Im also hopeful to have americans working again by that easter, that beautiful easter day. Reporter speaking with fox news earlier today, the president repeated his unsubstantiated claim that keeping the economy shut is worse than the virus. Youre going to lose people. Youre going to have suicides by the thousand. Reporter the president s aggressive approach comes amid growing concern among americans about the economy. A new cbs news poll out tonight shows just a quarter of americans say the economy is in good shape, a 32point drop from december. Mr. Trumps comments have rel exped member ie what the president is suggesting is really a formula for more uncertainty, more infections, and more harm to the economy. Reporter ultimately, it will be up to the states to decide when to reopen businesses. In texas, the Lieutenant Governor said grandparents would be willing to sacrifice for their grandchildren. And those of us who are 70 plus, well take care of ourselves, but dont sacrifice the country. Reporter new York Governor Andrew Cuomo strongly disagreed. No american is going to say, accelerate the economy at the cost of human life. Reporter moments ago while the president was advocating for that easter deadline to reopen the country and see packed churches, doctor anthony fauci, who was back at the briefing today, he said we need to be flexible, that they need to gather more data to know if thats actually a feasible timeline. Norah. Odonnell paula, thank you. Dr. Tom inglesby is the director of Johns Hopkins center for Health Security and joins us now. Doctor, thank you so much. Good to be here. Odonnell the president said today he wants the country opened by easter. Thats 19 days from now. Is that a realistic goal . So, i think its too soon to say whether where well be by easter, but i think its going to take at least until easter to even begin to see the impact of the social distancing measures that have been put in place in the last week. Odonnell and weve heard the governor of new york, andrew cuomo, say that new york is going to reach its peak in two or three weeks. So this is far from over. Yeah, i do think were really at the beginning of this epidemic. In italy, not very long ago, there seemed to be quite a calm, and no evidence of cases, and now, there are extraordinary numbers of sick people and dying people around the country of italy. And we can see Washington State and new york are the beginning of what could happen in this country around the country. Im quite worried that if we release social distancing measures soon, were going to have a rapid rise in cases. Odonnell were not even two weeks into this, in terms of the social distancing, and already the discussion has become, well, when can we end it . Is that the right way to look at this crisis . Well, i do understand that even with a week of these around the country, and i think its too soon to say which measure we could let off when. Odonnell what do you make the argument that another i completely agree with that. And i think its really important to think through all of the economic consequences. But at the same time, we have to do the same for what will happen in the absence of any attempts to slow this virus down. Odonnell we heard the president say that weve never closed down the country like this for the flu. And the flu kills tens of thousands a year. Why is this different . In a normal flu season, we dont have people overflowing into hospitals. We dont have so many people that we dont have enough ventilators for them. I think we need to make sure that everyone understands that this is a very unusual event. This does not look like seasonal flu. Odonnell dr. Tom inglesby, thank you so much. Thank you, norah. toe have detaab a vote in congress on that 2 trillion economic rescue package. News that a deal is close sent stocks soaring today. The dow was up more than 11 , its biggest oneday gain since 1933. Nancy cordes has been following it all from capitol hill. And, nancy, when can americans expect some help . Reporter well, norah, senators had been planning to vote tonight, but now it looks like the timing will slip to tomorrow. All the major sticking points have been resolved, but theyre still hammering out a few final details in what will be the largest economic stimulus package in history. We are very close. Reporter the massive bill is designed to resuscitate a suddenly ailing economy. G. Reporter 500 billion in loans for big businesses. Nearly 400 billion in grants and loans for small businesses. This is a great plan. Reporter the bill includes a onetime cash payment for most working americans, up to 1200 for individuals, 3,000 for the average family. The bill also expands Unemployment Insurance from 26 weeks to 39 in most states, boosting benefits by 600 a week. Katie ellis and cason kelly are restaurant servers in atlanta, married with a baby, they were both laid off last week. If youre a youre only source of income just immediately stops one day, it changes your whole life, so. Reporter the new jobless benefits would apply not just to salaried workers but freelancers and contractors, too. Roughly 3. 4 million workers filed for unemployment last we me states, like georgia andhaube thesitesdo weve called and left messages weve called and left messages and havent heard anything back. Reporter congressional sources tell cbs news that the bill now contains 130 billion for hospitals and 150 billion for state and local governments, which are under enormous strain right now, even as the sales taxes they rely on have dried up, norah. Odonnell so many people waiting for that help, nancy. Thank you. And heres a look at the global picture tonight. The pandemic has exploded to more than 400,000 cases worldwide and more than 18,000 deaths. And today, india, ordered the biggest lockdown in the world, telling its more than one billion people to stay inside for three weeks. And japan today took the drastic olympics until next year. From tokyo. Cio reports tonight reporter todays announcement hit just four days jandathe msf athlet worldwide. American Kate Courtney already qualified for tokyo, but now her olympic Mountain Biking dreams have hit the skids. It will be a huge disappointment not to be able to compete in tokyo as planned. But i also think theres no other option at this moment. Reporter its not only the athletes feeling the pain. Economists estimate japan alone stands to lose anywhere from 6 billion to 30 billion. One estimate has japan missing out on 2 billion in tourism. This comes after domestic sponsors have already forked ou. The National Stadium has gone through a 1. 4 billion renovation, an investment now with an uncertain return. Economist jesper koll. As an economic forecaster, you have to be worried. Reporter even before coronavirus, japan was already set to be on the edge of recession. Now this. A prudent man would forecast that japan is in recession. Reporter and, norah, if youre wondering what will happen to the olympic flame, the International OlympicCommittee Says it will stay here in japan as a beacon of hope during these troubled times. Im chip reid reporting from washington, and weve got a lot more to tell you about this morning, including the efforts to find a vaccine, if not a cure, for the coronavirus paralyzing the nation. Bill whit kerr has the story for 60 minutes. Reporter at the university of nebraska Medical Center, one of the eerier scenes weve seen, cocooned in that pod is an unlucky woman with the coronavirus, but lucky to be here. This facility was one of the first in the country built for outbreaks like this. Dr. Angela hugh lewitt is the ml director for the facility equipped to deal with patients with contagious diseases. Built for the anthrax scare, the building is isolated with its own ventilation system, and highly trained staff. About 100 nurses, therapists, Critical Care and Infectious Disease doctors. How many patients can be treat at one time . We could actually accept up to probably eight patients in the biocontainment unit, depending how sick they are and how much equipment is required. Reporter how many facilities like this are there around the country . We have ten Regional Treatment Centers with these capabilities. Reporter given the scope of this outbreak, that doesnt seem nearly enough. If we had a therapeutic agent that we knew worked or we had a vaccine that could help prevent the spread of this illness, then this would be something a little more controllable than what we have now. Reporter researchers at the university of nebraska Medical Center modelled a worst Case Scenario in the u. S. Over the course of a year, 96 million cases of covid19, 4. 8 million hospitalizations, almost a half million deaths. Scientists hope the measures the country is taking will keep the worst from happening, but the urgency of this moment has medical researchers all over the world racing to find some way to fight the killer virus. Last month the National Institutes of health tapped the nebraska Medical Center to launch the first Clinical Trial in the u. S. Of an antiviral drug, remdesavir to treat patients who have already contracted the virus. Its being tested against a placebo. It
