We are going to begin with the rising death toll and utter sevastation caused by hurricane laura, which barreled across the louisiana and texas coastlines overnight, leaving entire towns under water, plowing over neighborhoods and killing at least six, including a 14year old girl. Along the coast, the destruction goes on for miles. From above you can see whats left of cameron, louisiana, where the storm came ashore, sending a storm surge more than 10 feet high over homes and businesses and tossing mobile homes and cars blocks from where they once t. Lauras 150mileperhour winds also ripped across much of the state overnight, leaving rooftops shredded and tearing homes from their foundations. Nearly a Million People are without power in the region tonight, and rescue crews are still working to make their way through some of the hardest hit areas. In west lake, louisiana, thick, toxic smoke is still billowing from a plant that makes pool chemicals after the ferocious storm set off a chlorine fire there. This evening, families who live nearby are being told not to leave their hurricanedamaged homes because of the dangerous fumes caused by the burning chemicals. And as we come on the air, laura is still churning north, dumping heavy rain into arkansas and setting off tornado warnings across that state. Well, theres a lot of new reporting to update you on tonight, and our team of correspondents is standing by to cover it all. Reporter norah, this is what several hours of 150milean hour winds can do to a building. At this aviation school, these hangars are now piles of twisted metal. St riprther down here, you can see that big airplane. Parts of it were just ripped off. We decided to survey the damage from the air, and we saw that parts of southwestern louisiana are unrecognizable. This is where the hurricane slammed into the coast with winds up to 150 Miles Per Hour, and from the air, it looks like roofs were ripped off of homes and walls were collapsed. The buildings that are Still Standing are submerged. Hurricane laura rammed the gulf coast early this morning as a category 4 hurricane, bringing heavy rains and winds powerful enough to knock over an r. V. There it goes. Reporter winds up to 150 Miles Per Hour shook highrise buildings and ripped down power lines. Nearly 1 million households in na are withoutsiana are without power. I was just on the phon power. Oss on tesst six people in louisiana bungs in grand lakre flattened by the storm, and the high winds knocked dozens of rail cars off the track. The roof was completely torn off this building, down to the rafters. A floating casino ended up jammed underneath a bridge. The sides of this huge boat were peeled back by the high winds. This football stadium is partially under water. Shortly after the storm made ondfall, a fire broke out at a lake charles chemical plant. Smoke could be seen billowing for miles. Local residents were told to shelter in place and close their windows. Orange, texas, suffered significant damage, but Governor Greg Abbott said east texas was largely spared. We dodged a bullet. Reporter back in lake charles, Barbara Thomas has a mess to clean up, but she is thankful tonight. You could hear the shingles coming off and hearing things that not as bad as i had thought it might be. Reporter while people start to survey the damage and start picking up, louisiana governor Jon Bell Edwards told me and reminded us we are still in a pandemic and he wants people to keep their guard up so they can people to keep their guard up s, llank you. Now to the heartbreaking story of that 14yearold girl killed overnight by a falling tree. It happened in the city of leesville, louisiana. Thats about 100 miles inland from the coast. She wanted to go to, like, harvard or ivy league and she wanted to be a marine microbiologist. Reporter cynthia, her two sisters and her parents rode out the hurricane in their home. Their town of leesville was not under evacuation, and mom and dad thought it would be safe. It was scary. It was dark. It was terrifying. There was rain, wind everywhere. It sounded huge. We were in our parents room, and everyone was sitting in there, red the tree it came down. Reporter whats left of that bedroom tells rest of this itory. I walked to try to find cindy because she wasnt talking and d under the tree. She was pinned under the tree. Reporter cynthia was killed and help was unavailable. The twomile stretch of road to their house covered in trees. The Sheriffs Office spent five hours on foot using chainsaws to create a pathway. The millers dont have much money, but in their corner of this bayou, they have family and a dream now shattered. She was going to do something big. Reporter cynthia was the first confirmed fatality from this hurricane, and the truth is, we dont know how many more people there are. There are a lot of homes that look just like this one. Were going to turn now to some breaking news coming in from kenosha, wisconsin. 17yearold Kyle Rittenhouse has just been charged with first degree, reckless homicide and use of a dangerous weapon. Rittenhouse is accused of shooting and killing three people tuesday night at a protest over the Police Shooting of jacob blake. Tonight, were learning new details about those two incidents.
