joining us this sunday. russia's attacks and atrocities are mounting in ukraine and so is the exodus from the country. the united nations said today that more than 4.5 million ukrainians have fled the country, 47 days after russia's invasion. and new satellite images show a massive eight mile long russian convoy headed east. this after forces retreated from the north to regroup. we begin tonight with debora patta reporting from kyiv and we should note that the images that you are about to see are definitely disturbing. >> good evening, this is two very different countries depending on where you are, in the north here in kyiv relative calm now that areas around the capitol are back in ukrainian hands. while along the eastern front in donbas, residents are braced for an all-out russian assault. >> from land, sea and air russia has unleashed sustained misery on the donbas region for more than six weeks. there is not much that hasn't been reduced to rubble in cities like mariupol. thse that escaped denounce it as worse than hell and there's a new offensive on the way. satellite imagery shows a massive eight mile russian convoy heading south towards the eastern front line, the new battle field commander at the helm aleksandr dvornikov, the general accused of orderings fight that flatens cities. in the area iernd kyiv destruction on an industrial scale and a street littered debora patta joins us now, debora when you hear words like genocide and extermination could the international court successfully prosecute putin for war crimes? >> well russia is not part of the international criminal court, putin withdrew in 2016. they could charge him but getting him in front of the court is the tough part. the icc does not have its own police force and relies on countries to arrest suspects, jericka. >> duncan: debora patta and our cbs news crew, thank you. >> well a cbs news poll out today shows americans remain supportive of u.s. efforts in ukraine. that includes high support for increasing sanctions on russia. cbs's christina ruffini is at the white house with some new developments on the diplomatic front. christina, good evening. >> good evening, jericka, several european nations announced plans to reopen their embassy in kyiv and state department sources tell cbs news they are exploring options for potentially sending u.s. diplomats back into country, although likely not in the immediate future. >> this is a remarkable thing that the ukrainians won the battle of kyiv. >> on "face the nation" today national security advisor jake sullivan says that victory came down to the bravery and skill of the ukrainian military. and the weapons provided by the united states. >> we're working through when we will be in a position to set our diplomatic presence back up in kyiv. that is a judgment that gets worked through our security professionals. >> now as the conflict moves to the east, the u.s. says it's rushing more defensive weaponry into the country. a new cbs news yougov poll says 72% of americans support that of the and a strong majority say they would support u.s. military involvement in ukraine if russia attacks a nato ally or uses chemical or nuclear weapons. >> in an interview with 60 mincer, president zelenskyy said ukraine's future will defend-- depend on prompt u.s. support. >> you are frustrated with president biden. >> me, no, i'm not disappointed. i don't know how another president in his place would help us. i don't know. it's difficult. we have a good relationship. i think so at least. ukraine depends on the supports of the united states and i as the leader of a country at war, i can only be grateful. >> now this week president biden will travel to iowa where he is going to talk about what the white house is calling the putin price hike, and what the administration is trying to do to fight it jericka. >> duncan: christina ruffini, thank you. to france now where the country's presidential election is tighter today than first expected. early projection show incumbents emmanuel macron will face a runoff with a far right challenger marine le pen. and cbs's elaine cobb is in paris. you know, elaine, these candidates faced each other five years ago, when you think about this election what stands out as different this time? >> five years ago mar-- marine le pen's strong showing was a surprise, it had not been expected. this time she said i have a real chance, i can be presidentment and her campaign has been pushing very much right to that end. she has softened her image. she dropped all the extremist rhetoric, not speaking about immigration, islam or national identity. and president macron has been busy with diplomacy in ukraine so he came into the campaign very late which helped her, again. >> duncan: and when you think about her softening that language as you just mentioned, is that intentional, do you think, that is meant to help her win or does she still feel very strongly about her view points from five years ago? >> if is very much an image thing. when the invasion of ukraine happened she condemned it but she still says putin is a good ally for france. and she still is going ahead with her views and her program from before. >> all right, elaine cobb, we know you will stay on top of the story for us, thank you. >> christians around the world are celebrating palm sunday, today at the vatican poat francis lead the faithful at mass marking the start of holy week. it the is first time we have seen large clouds like this gather inned st. peter's square for palm sunday since the start of the pandemic. well there is new concern tonight about a spring covid surge in the u.s. a rapid rise in cases in philadelphia has city officials considering a return to mask wearing indoors. right now 27 states are reporting a rise in infections over the past eight days. cbs's jonathan vig lot si in los angeles with what we can expect. jonathan. >> jericka, good evening, covid cases here in l.a. have spiked 78% in just the last four days but a critical number to keep our eyes on is hospitalizations. and so far all signs indicate there has been no injuries. >> spring break crowds and eased masking restrictions in loss angs will and other cities are driving covid risks up across the nation. >> we're watching a little too much into it to go back to normal. >> in the northeast there has been a spike in cases including the nation's capitol where new infections jumped 89 percent in two week, including a high profile outbreak among lawmakers. health officials say the ba-2 sub variant accounts for up to 72 percent of cases but says it's milder symptoms paired with the closing of many testing sites could lead to underreporting. >> i think that we're dramatically undercounting cases so if you see cases going up in your local community, that say pretty good indication that there is more infection than what we are measy eric adams is now in isolation after testing positive for covid. cbs's he leasee preston is on time's care. >> here on broadway the marquees stars of plaza suite tested positive for covid making it the third production to temporarily last night, part of a global fundraising campaign for ukrainian refugees on youtube that raised 11 billion dollars. lennon said the lyrics reflected desire for a world with peace. imagine that. well, riddled with bullet holes. the investigation is shutting down a stretch of 580. a brush fire burns close new video of the aftermath of an inferno at home depot and where they believe the fire started. why another fire could lead to higher gas prices. good evening. right now we are following multiple breaking news stories from oakland to the peninsula. >> right now 580 has been shutdown from macarthur the high street while they investigate a possible freeway shooting. here is a live look right now and you can see there are at least two cars involved. one clearly has a shattered window and there appears to be bullet holes on both sides of the car. >> they said it happened just before four clock this afternoon at the intersection of 580 and highway 13. >> the closure is creating a huge backup and traffic is being diverted onto highway 13. they are asking drivers to avoid the area and they are not saying how long westbound 580 fire burned close to homes. you can see this video of the flames burning in very dry brush. it broke out on the slopes between homes on the intersection of bell crest avenue and longview drive. our cameras got this video of
