After decades of milking the cows, some are finng it too tough to make ends meet. Sophie for those watching on pbs and around the globe, welcome to world news america. Right now fires are burning across the amazon rainforest, and bras president says his government lacks the resources to fight them. Blazes are a regular occurrence during this season, but figures show the number of fires has surged 83 from the same period last year. Critics say the president s policies are partly to blame. From sao paulo, this report. Reporter fire in the amazon rainforest. This is happening in the worldn largesmost important ecosystem that is home to 3 million species of plants and animals and one million indigenouseople. It generates more than 20 ofen all the oxn our atmosphere. This is what it is like at groundlevel. Brazil has had more than 73,000 fire outbreaks this year, and more than half has been in the amazon. Sao paulo, brazils largest city, is over 1600 miles from fires. This week in the middle of the day it was plunged into darkness due to smoke from the fires. In recent months, the countrys president has ripped up Environmental Protections for the amazon. Who does he blame for the fires . Pres. Bolsonaro guarding the amazonires, im under the impression they could have been started by the ngos. What was their intention . To bring about problems in brazil. Reporter protesters have blamed bolsonaros government for encouraging greater exploitation of the amazoand weakening its environmental safeguards. This is how they greeted brazils environmental minister at a conference. Fires in the amazon caused by people are fairly common at this time of year, buit was the arrival of smoke from the blazes here in sao paulo that ignited outrage in brazil and worldwide against the governments attitude tards the vironment. Bbc news, sao paulo. Sophie mo lets ge on the danger posed by these five. My colleague katty kay spoke to na mccarty, former administrator of Environmental Protection agency. Katty how bad is the situation in the amazon atheoment . Gina right now it is pretty sttling. The amazon looks like a burning inferno. We do recognize, i think, that the policies of the president in brazil rig now is basically he had an open season on the amazon for ranchers, for farmers, for miners, for logging. What has happened is he has opened up so much land that in the dry season it is going to start burning. We see now the kind of smoke that is traveling 1800 miles away and darkening skies. This is terrifying, and it should be an incredible wakeup call to the rest of the world that we cannot let the amazon deteriorate like this and expect that we can control climate change. We need the amazon. We have to take action. Katty mr. Bolsonaro says that brazil simply doesnt have the resources to deal with these fires. He said he would take too many firemen. Is this somewhere where this is a globalth interest anrest of the world should step in . Gina well, i think the rest of the world is willing to step in, but this president needs to send a signal that he is going to change h rulings and behaviorsid that basically it was perfectly fine to destroy the amazon, and that it was brazils alone resource. Is the worlds resource and he knows it as well as everyone else. Of course the rest of the world needs to contribute and do what we can to control it, but hishi policies allowto happen, and he needs to change his nnhavior. You expect to allow the that he cannotllowhe cannot o pect to allow the rest of the world to allow himep his open season on the amazon and then come in and try to put on a bandaid approach. Susan about todays fight this is not about todayss fire, it about the amazon in general. Katty hen you say we cannot expect the rest of the will to allow him to continue, what are you thinking of . What is going to happen if he does carry on with these policies . Gina i think what we have to look at is working with him in brazil to understand how to lose their economy, which is essential boost their economy, which is essentially what he is guing here, we have to move into the amazon to boost our economy and strengthen brazil. The rest of the world has to tell him no, that is not what you ve to do. We can Work Together and make sure we are supporting brazil another countries that a struggling to grow their economies, but not destroying the health of the planet and the health of all of the people in it in order to make that happen. Katty gina mccarthy, thanks very much for joining. Gina thanks, kathy. Sophie the british Prime Minister continued his Charm Offensive through europe on thursday in his bid trework the terms of brexit. Boris johnson was in paris trying to convince president Emmanuel Macron to drop the idea ksof the socalled irish bp. But behind the smiles and the ly firm handshakes, litt progress was made. Todays meeting followed similar talks in berlin on wedneay. Our correspondent has this report. Reporter it is a short flight from berlin, but ty re is a long to go. Yesterday, Angela Merkel invited the u. K. To find solutions that might avoid a Nodeal Brexit, but little more than that. And todays trip promised to be tougher still for the Prime Minister. President macron has long id the existing brexit deal works and cannot be renegotiated. But Boris Johnson is pushing fon a differen and seemed buoyed by his trip to germany. Prime min. Johnson i wasnc powerfullyraged by our conversations in berlin with ouf mutuends. I know that with energy and with creativity and application, we can find a way forward. Reporter but Boris Johnsons key demand, the removal of thed socalleish backstop from the brexit deal, was given short shrift by esident macron. Pres. Macron the key elements of this agreement includingirhe h key elements of disagreement including the ish backstop are not just technical constraints, but indeed, indispensable guarantees to preserve the stability in ireland anthe integrity of the Single Market, which are fully part of the agreement negotiated over a long period of time between the u. K. And the eu. Reporter both the french president and chancellor Angela Merkel said Boris Johnson has has 30 days to negotiate an eninsurance policy to preva hard border. So what is his plan . Prime min. Johnson we think there are ways of protecting the integrity of the Single Market and allowing the u. K. To exit from the eu whole and entire and perfect, as it were. Reporter the Prime Minister mentioned ideas already rejected e many times by as unworkable, and president macron said any alterations to the deal would be small. Pres. Macron in the coming month we will not find areew ent very different from the current one. But if there are things that can be adapted, they have to meet the two objectives i alrdy bentioned, and they need t found in the coming month. Reporter but the Prime Minister remained pugnacious. Prime min. Johnson lets get on unw on maintaining the partnership over. Reporter Boris Johnsons breezy optimism that a brexit deal can be struck jars with what european leaders are actually saying. Right now it looks unlikely thae a comproan be reached with so little time left. There is plenty of swagger in politics. Eye to eye, their talks would have been frank. An acrimonious and destructive Nodeal Brexit looms over these cordiallooking discussions and neither side wants the blame for that. So for now, diplomacy goes on. Sophie a look at some other news. Prodemocracy activists staged a sit at a hong kong station today. They used fire extinguishers and close the gates, briefly locking themselves inside. A Tactical Squad was on standby armed with beanbag guns and tear gas, but no shots were fired. Ttempt by bangladesh to start repatriating Rohingya Refugees to myanmar has failed, with no one turning up to board the vehicles that would take them home. Officials in bangladesh say none of the refugees were willing to return. Re hund of pilgrims have gathered in bulgarias mountains to welcome in their spiritual new year. For about 18 minutes, the pilgrims mov gracefully in con centric circles on a large meadow as part of the threeday event. They are members of a Spiritual Society which combines elements tianity and indian mysticism. Now to politics here in the united states, which have been pretty fast and furious this week. Your are just a few of the highlights here are a few of the weeks highlights. First he offered to buy greenland and then cancel the state visit to denmark when he was rebuffed. He told jewishamerican voters they were disloyal and weak if they voted democrat. He sugget was time for russia to be remitted to the g7. And yes, he called himself the chosen one for taking on china over trade. What is behind all of this . A brief time ago i discussed it with jeff mason of reuters. People were laughing at the beginning of the week. It became less funny, of course, yesterday. What do you make of all this . Is this part of the strategy . Jeff people always ask me and as generally if there is a strategy. The answer after two and half years oftresident trump i don know if it is strategic. It may be partially strategic. I think it is largely just who he is, and there are times when like this week you see a lot more happening and a lot more things coming up that raise eyebrows, and some weeks where it is less so. Sophie quite a lot more this week. Jeff for sure. Fosure. Sophie there has been speculation that he is trying distraction and trying to distract people from the ongoing talk of a potential recession on anthe horizon. Truth to that . Jeff i think there is concern at the white house and in republican political circlesom about the ec for sure. That is one reason why the president talked a little bit about potentially doing something on tax cuts and then pulled back on that. He says he is confident in the economy, and others in the white house have said that a. The potential for a recession has made somheadlines, and that has driven the political discourse as well. Sophie how many tools does he have left in his disposal to stave ofrecession, or is it just literally blaming the Federal Reserve . Jeff there is a lot oing, for sure, and that is his m. O. , and certainly with regard to the economy he is blaming jay powell, the chairman of th Federal Reserve, who, it is worth always notin he chose. But he has been piling a lot of criticism on them. In terms of what options does he have, one part of the answer to the question is he doesnt have control of the house of representatives. An sort of major legislative rove he would want to make them he would run up toems in the house. In terms of what he can do legislatively, probably not a whole lot. Are there executive orders on the economy they might consider possibly. Ut . But all of that is to say that he also is giving mixed messages because he says quite a bit we have the best economy in the world, we dont need anything. In fact, he said almost exactly thatuote yesterday when he w outside talking to reporters, l. E dont need tax cuts, the economy is doing w sophie do you think it was just kind of a crazy week, or do you see a real shift ahead of his reelection bid . Do you think this is a change we will see now . Jeff it is hard to say. Ere have been so many crazy weeks over the last two and a half years. I think the greenland issue was really something. Ae fact that, a, he was a serious about that as he apparently was, and the fact that he was willing to cancel ar to denmark because he felt offended that the danish prime minist called it absurd, that was sort of on a diplomatic scale pretty unusual in a circle of things that are pretty unusual. I just dont im reluctant to say this week is a turning point, because there have been so many with this president and i susp will see more. Sophie when you look at what he had to say about denmark or the oug7 this weekend, what do t of that inome terms of headlines from President Trump . When we look at his handling of week . Ns this jeff i dont think it is going to be a smooth meeting, necessarily. He has had tension with a lot of the leaders at the g7, cer tinly ovde and discussion of the Global Economy and trade is a big part of the g7 agenda. I think that that might be a tricky discussion in tms of headlines. We will hear about his concerns about what european economies are doing and how that might affect the u. S. Economy. And you will probably hear from the europeans complaints about the president s threats to tariffs ony pu european cars. Sophie great to get your insight. Thank you very much indeed. Jeff my pleasure. Sophie you are watching bbc world newsmerica. Still to come on tonights program, President Trump has labeled them terrorists, but tonight we take a closer look at the farleft movement antifa. Sophie if you know anything about unidentified flying cts, chances are you hav heard of area 51, name for the airbase in nevada where some claim aliens are being housed. Now area 51 faces a possible invasion, but not from the skies, as our reporter explains. Reporter you have traveled millions of lightyears across the dark reaches of space. This may not seem like the first place you would choose to visit. Rachel is a town of around 50 residents. It is hot and its drive. Some believe little green men are only a stones throw away. So convinced of the fact, oneti man has not enrely seriously called for people to come and storm area 51. Some 2illion or so say they are planning on doing exactly that. The only real business in town is the appropriately named little ali inn. The owner was skeptical when she heard the news. I thought it was a joke. T think anyone would be stupid enough to cross there. Guess i was wrong. [laughter] reporter the u. S. Military is taking the whole thing ver i seriouslyeed. They have warned people not to try to enter the airse. Whatever is inside, aliens or just combat aircraft, they wanted cap firmly under they want it kept firmly under wraps. It secwill be on high alert. They will not be messing around. If you look like you want to cross the boundary, you will get arrested. Reporter to try to defuse the situation, some locals are trying to stage a rock festival called alienstock. 2 Million People are unlikely to turn up, but some may, hoping that the truth is out there. Sophie wednesday, president h trump saconsiders the movement antifa, short for antifascist, a terroristni ortion, and he is looking at officiallyesignating it as such. S have called his statements hypocrisy, arguing he has done little to curb white supremacist groups. Earlr this week, our north america correspondent Aleem Maqbool reported for us on the current state of the far right in america. To ght, he has more on the far left from portland, oregon. Aleem the rise of White Supremacy in the u. S. Seen a a counter surgantifascist movement that has come to be known as antifa. It gets attention when activists igcome out to oppose farrht marches, often in dangerousnf ntations with neonazis and the police. Itr s ty, our obligation as human beings to come in and use our voice and bodies to protect communities. I personally and comfortable with the thought that my life could be like, i could die in order to make it easier forr otople to live. Aleem many conservatives here say antifa, and not the farright, is the real danger. In the past, antifa protesters have vandazed businesses and beaten people during rallies in the name of antifascism. We are not going to let fascists takeover peacefully. Aleem y any means . By any means necessary. Aleem which means the potential use of violence . Unfortunately. En aleem he has rrested several times, and its his and insists it is never his objective to start violence, only to physically confront hate groups on the streets. But even in recent days we have seen that the Antifa Movement takes many other forms to oppose fascism. Yofadont just see antiism expressed in this country on the streets when people come out to confront White Supremacists. Tantifa has found a home Supporters Clubs of some of americas professional football teams. The stadium at this Portland Timbers game was awash with tifascist slogans and signs and messages of inclusion. Even the Supporters Club logo is that of the iron front, arro representing opposition to nazism. Owd this is antifa, too, the metal band lockdn, part of a thriving antifascist music scene. We are seeing such a high rid, in this racist, prejudi a lot of times sexis homophobic, transphobic these views and opinions that people want to express. I want to focus on saying these things are not ok. Aleem so what do they think about the president saying he is thinkingf designating antifa a terrorist organization . Antifa is not an organization whatsoever. It just should be who you are as a human being. It is super confusing as well, because he wants to label antifa a terroristic organization, whereas we have done nothing terroristic at all. We have committed no atrocities, unlike the other side, the far right side. There have been many deadly terroristic attacks which the president has not had anything to say about. Ee alm when you look at the Mass Shootings by White Supremacists on the black church, the synagogue, or targeting latinos, there has been no equivalent of violence on the farleft. At is not to say that things are not heading a more treme direction. Aleem maqbool, bbc news, in portland, oregon. Sophie here in the united states, the idea of the family farm stretches back to the countrys founding. Nt but re, many are falling on hard times. The combination of economic tuoil and changes in the industry are forcing some to sell, including one family whose dairy farm in wisconsin has been milking cows since 1942. Now they are getting rid of their remaining stock and looking for what comes next. My life much revolved around the farm. Growing up, it is what i always wanted to do. I guess i always wanted to farm. It started in 1940 with my grandfather, and then it was passed on to my father. I took over in 2013. It has always been important to me. This is the kids trickortreating in the milk house. That is the milk jar. They would have to come to the barn to trickortreat. There has been a shift towards larger farms, but i always figured there would be a place for the smaller farms. With the economy and everything, i dont see a future in th, i guess. Price of milk has not resolved as fast as all our expenses. If you had to pay me what i do, he would be going towards. I am doing what any father would do to help them through. I nt mind it. But when i cant see him progressing, it is a little bit harder to work that hard. Everybody has cepted it is just time to move on. My daughter comes in an helps as much as she can. Ate enjoys it. It is really nice he has been able to do that. It is going to be something that kind of sad that she wont get to see as she gets older. Not much i can do about it, i guess. Its been generations down. That is what you expect, that your grandchildren would have n the opportunity to carrye tradition. If i start to feel emotional a bit, i think it is a relief, too. My son will have some kind of life, rather than that justve donatingthing. Y know, i still wonder sometimes if it is the right decision for me or not. I have never really been off the farm, i guess. I ve never had that experience of not getting up and theirst thing i doing is go to the barn and do chores. It will be different, thats for sure. Sophie the family on the tough decisions they have had to mfe letting go their family farm. I am sophie long. Thank you very much for watching world news america. Have a great evening.
