Hes a former firefighter, and noticed the back side of the park he got me three more guys, they went down on the other end, they worked their butts off, they saved that whole side, all the homes on that side. Some of these people havent come back yet because they think their homes are burned down. This is the local paper here, the sonoma index tribune, dropped off on doorsteps with the head line, the week sonoma burned. today we got a look at some of those badly burned areas. Fewer than 10 miles away from downtown sonoma, a charred blackened landscape. Many vineyards and buildings in tact, but a once bucolic scenery, now changed. Sheriff deputies say plumere was stealing from a car in an evacuated area. They also say plumere stole from a Vineyard Management center as well as a fire department. Its really hard because i just saw him at church and its just hard to imagine that we wont see him again. Members of the Resurrection Catholic Church in santa rosa say leroy and donna halbur were pillars of their communtiy. Both were 80 years old, married fifty years and the parents of two sons and had two grandchildren. Leroy helped found the Sonoma County branch of the Catholic Charity st. Vinicent de paul. He would give you the shirt off his back. A midwesterner with a dry sense of humor, leroy also volunteered as an usher at the church and would always help out during their big festival. He would be out there with the best of them putting up tables and structures, if you needed him he was there and he did it with a smile on his face. Those who knew donna halbur say her health had been failing in recent years. Shes described as being very creative, welcoming and supportive. I remember donna as being very encouraging of pursuing your dreams especially women and especially in the churchthe two were killed here at their angela drive home in the larkfield area of santa rosa before they could escape the fire. maureen the halbers will be buried back in their native iowa, a Memorial Service will be held here at the Resurrection Church in santa rosa in november. Terisa . estacio live it was truly an honor to talk with this family today i am here in santa rosa just off of fountaingrove pkwy near rincon ridge. The zechowys lost everything in the tubbs fire but that is not why the reached out to us they are on a mission. They want to find the officers who came to their rescue risking their own lives to save their entire family. estacio there is little left of the zechowys home. Only the stone pillars next to the mail box still stand. Heres what their home. Used to look like. But the santa rosa family isnt really focusing on what is gone they are grateful about what they do have each other. Stephen zechowy. Everything important to me is in this room. And they add it is all because of the incredible selfless actions two Police Officers. Heres what happened it was early monday morning the family says the wind knocked out the power. They did not think much of it stephen. I thought maybe we would lose some food however, as they slept. Fire erupted in their neighborhood and quickly spread thats when two Police Officers rushed into their burning home zechowy they said go, you have a minute to go your house is on fire mia. I heard my dad say get the kids. Jill zechowy says they grabed their dog, shoved everyone into a car including the jills inlaws sleeping in the front of the house, and drove as fast as they could they have nothing left. They went to target to pick up some essentials they are hanging out at stephens office for now, and staying at a friends home. When i spoke to them it was a tearful exchange. As they told me the reason, they are speaking up is this they want to reach out to the officers they dont know who saved them jill. It is hard to put into words but they risked their lives for us and their families support what they do, so thank you stephen. I think he probably eventually went, but its just sad. I mean, theres a lot of nice people in this park. And, i dont know if ill ever see any of them because half of them, we were friendly, but i dont know their last names or where they went. Its just sad all the way around. Sergeant Dave Thompson with the Sonoma County Sheriffs Office says the bone fragments of at least one person were found here. Dave thompson sergeant this is very labor intensive. As you can imagine, its a home reduced to about three or four inches. Sergeant Thompson Says cadaver dogs may also visit the coffey park neighborhood. Some people who live in this area have been reported missing. You cant tell, but im standing on a sideyard, looking through what used to be a garage. Meaning, she had the perspective to know everyone needed to evacuate immediately. So it just like, ran us out of the area. So she shoved bentley. Her 4 year old pit bull into her honda. And drove down the road. Within minutes, she was stuck between other cars. This one right beside her, overturned. It was coming faster than i could leave in traffic, so i went back and got my bike. She also grabbed a duffle bag. Which she used as a makeshift sidecar for her 70 pound best friend. So i grabbed my dog and i told him, hey man this is serious, you need to just sit in the bag. And he, he hopped right in. I held the duffle bag like this, put it over and had it on my arms, pedaling like that. She says after she made it down the road. A few miles ahead of the fire, a man in a truck pulled over. And took her and bentley the rest of the way out. I just want to say thank you to him. Paul johnson. A short time ago we learned the number of homes and buildings destroyed in the fires spiked siginificantly. Fire Officials Say 57hundred structures have been lost. pam we also learned of two more deaths in the bay area. The napa county sheriff found the bodies of 89 yearold doctor George Chaney and 79yearold edward stone. They were inside a home on atlas peak road. This brings the number of dead in napa county to four. As weve said. The latest numbers indicate a total of 35 people have been killed in the fire zone. We are getting an update right now on the fires. Lets go to the Sonoma County fairgrounds in santa rosa. pam one more note. We just learned governor brown, along with u. S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris will visit Sonoma County tomorrow. They have been waiting for the conditions to improve before visiting the area. This comes as fema is set to open up its operations in santa rosa tomorrow as well. A state of emergency was declared earlier this week. And the white house signed off on sending in federal aid. steve fire crews are making progress on some of the massive wildfires burning in the north bay. Here are a look at the latest numbers. The atlas fire in napa and solano counties has burned more 48thousand acres and is 27percent contained. The nuns fire in Sonoma County has burned over 44thousand acres and is five percent contained. The tubbs fire in napa county has burned nearly 35thousand acres and is 25percent contained. And in Sonoma County. But were also learning about a glimmer of hope some surviving houses. Back area sahara, the street farthest back along the fence, closest to kaiser, is virtually untouched from one end to the other. The row across the street from those has many homes Still Standing, though not all of them. I learned all about this from priest morgan, a resident here and former firefighter. He woke up from a dead sleep sunday night to see flames a fire trucks all around journeys end. He started to evacuate but thought, im a former firefighter, i need to do something. He asked some of the firefighters for a hose that he could run, and even though they were evacuating kaiser permanente, they went against protocol to help him save several homes. sot priest morgan ÷ helped save part of Mobile Home Park they cut a hole in the fence, they gave me the hose and i started to work. And the captain walks up and says, wheres that hose going . and they said, some guy came and got it. he came and found me and said, what are you doing . i said, im trying to save my street. he looked both directions, and i dont think he realized there were still that many houses still there. He was like, woah . vo morgan is worried that a lot of people dont realize their homes are Still Standing. He says he counted 43 of them. Meanwhile, Sonoma County sheriff search and rescue crews were digging through the ashes with cadaver dogs, and found at least two victims bodies today. Its very possible there could be more here. The powere had gone out around 11 but the family said that has hapapned before and they didnt think much of it. But then around 3am two Police Officers barged into their bedroom they yelled they had a minute to get out of their burning home the family raced out with their dog, and some extended family members staying wth them. Her homecoming dress was in the house she was so sweet thought and said that right now she just wants to get together with her friends and that will be enough.
