Our wildfire coverage continues now as we keep a close eye on that massive glass fire burning in the north bay. Joining us now via zoom is Lynne Tolmachoff with calfire land thank you for being with us here tonight. Can you give us the latest with regard to you know homes that are lost structures that are threatened we do we have any updates on those numbers. You know the latest path we had was so from the probably just over a structures lot of the fire. So about 42,000 acres we should be having an update on the total amount of acres the back or noon. That should come in a little bit later on this evening. So lynn what are the conditions like right now i know the weather is at least a bit better, but what are. Cruz facing as we speak. Yeah, we didnt go into this is of improved the only challenge that had of the wind has shifted so that are coming out of the north northeast is now coming out of the south southwest. A direction so that means of pushing the fire back kind word artist so its going to push more and bang one and poke bally which pushing uphill to sell obviously its going to your travel for the fire to burn uphill under the conditions of the offer still very warm and very very dry and that is something were not expecting any relief from before in a week. Are the crews faced with any access or issues with this fire. Yeah, you know it is a its its pretty tough terrain and their not a whole lot of road but its often not extremely populated either which is another good that being said there still homes in there and that will do their best to protect the homes and then make sure bodies out but yeah, i know im going to be the challenge for them. Whats the nature of this firefight like are you able get helicopters and planes flying as the visibility, ok and. Howard ground crews able to access this tough terrain. Yeah the visibility has been kind of hit today with the with the lack of you know the winds going badly the good that they can help clear out the air the aircraft can fly. But we also dont want them to be. You fast because obviously that will help for the fire quicker. So we you know, im a better balance is helpful. But yes, theres an aircraft doing some flying today. And we do get them out of with public depending on conditions. Do you see any major differences between this particular fire and the lightning complex fires are they kind of similar in terms of fighting them. You know are fighting and goes about the same. The biggest difference probably with the lightning started there are still fire sparked by it was that the bigger bigger footprint of back in august that one being a you know probably maybe 2 to 3 started them out. In one large fire, but its still u and 300,000 acres that we thing and the other complex. I know that l a new complex and some of the others around the bay area about a month ago there were extreme challenges in terms of getting resources in there like you said with all of the lightning are you better staffed right now right here in the north bay and how are Crews Holding up this fatigue that were alluding to is real especially because were not even. You know word i guess just at the height of fire season. Yeah, we truly are it has been a very difficult to see you know 3. 8 million acres burned in the state of the record number. Weve been recording this sort part of history. Firefighters are doing getting a handle on the lnu complex was big thing because that that took a lot of as you are number one a significant amount of time that being said there are no other conflict going on in the day another fire so we have a stake police staff and part to get down time but were doing our best threat that the crews not as we get them some recognition of their family. All right lynn tell much off with calfire thanks so much for joining us tonight. Thank you. With so many firefighters dispatched from across the state to that glass fire or some of the other recent wildfires, it is reasonable for people to wonder who might be left back at their home stations should fire start there now turns out there is indeed a method to the madness kron fours rob fladeboe. Is live to explain how cal fires santa clara unit for example is managing its resources. Rob. Thats right sanaas and grab no sooner a strike team or a bulldozer crew dispatched to the scene of a fire when another arrived to take its place in the name of local Fire Protection. The regular dozier crew assigned to Calfire Santa Clara unit here in morgan hill is now cutting fire lines in the glassware socal for brought in this privately owned a bulldozer off to my left over here you see engine here this one would normally be in sunol a 3rd engine that at the creek liar for 28 consecutive days was replaced by a crew from gilroy its like playing chess, lets take a closer look. Lines here in napa and sonoma counties right now our crews from several different units across the bay area and state managing those resources is like a game of chess says Santa Clara Division chief knicks are della that weve got the 13 engines up their fight a grass fire spread across 4 different strike teams and will go and start individual units from different cal fire units put in together. And send them out as resources drawdown to make sure that everyone is balance equal. But also looking at whether to see what impacts are or when that happens Calfire Santa Clara and other units call on local resources. So there are no gaps in Fire Protection back home. As an example san jose fires covering 4 crew dispatched from cal fires public tax base and almost station in los gatos we reached out to gilroy fire san jose fire is the regional parks in alameda county. And they stopped Additional Resources for us to put in our stations, a backfield the 13 inches we have currently out on. Incidents in Northern California managing resources means replacing the 8 palace of water and 30,000 feet of hose can soon during the recent scu complex fire. Cal fires Morgan Hill Service center is continuously being restocked with the rations facemasks helmet and other tactical gear, poison protection and other tools of the trade. Like a chess game. The pieces are either on the move or about to be. It was so much a fire season still to managing resources means keeping them fresh. They were told crews to pace themselves. We were able to get additional firefighters through the governors active order. Not helped us rotate our crews off given them a couple days off every 2 weeks instead of having them stay on for weeks and weeks at a time. So thats keeping the crews fresh going to get in the reset to go back to their family and then get redeployed. And still more resources possibly to be managed chiefs are telling tells me today that the governor newsome inform cal fire this afternoon. That is put out a request for as many as a 100 engines from out of state live in morgan hill rob fladeboe kron 4 news rob. Thank you for that. Tonight, california is hoping to get yet another major disaster declaration from President Trump as the state deals with devastating wildfires. Kron 4 Capitol Bureau reporter Ashley Zavala sat down with the states top Emergency Management leader, about the need for help. The amount of fire that we have. It all on the landscape of the state. Is probably the most that i have seen in my time longterm Emergency Management leader and cal oh yes, director Mark Ghilarducci says this year is unlike any hes experienced before for the second time in a month california is requesting another president ial major disaster declaration for devastating wildfires. He confirmed the federal government has now approved 16 firefighting grants also known as asked mags the most ever in a single california fire season, but not every fire. Gets an f megan you have to have a series of events that are taking place that really could be you know and up into a catastrophic event with dozens of major fires burning since august the office of Emergency Services has 20 other states have joined the firefight through the out of state and federal mutual aid systems but the pandemic has thrown an added hurdle to bring in the extra help there were firefighters that. Could not respond because jurisdictions had firefighters that had covid positive availability of normal. Resources to maybe going support another jurisdiction, just wasnt there or in the event that removing resources like when we were working with the u. S. Forest service. We brought in the canadian. Crews from canada, they had to be quarantine prior to coming in that will has to be factored in. To the process which which just adds to another level of complexity really do she says because of the pandemic coupled with west coast heat waves and fires the resources have not been met to the degree state leaders would like but gilley duty says state leaders are trying to balance that out accordingly in sacramento, Ashley Zavala kron 4 news. And when we come back we continue to track that breaking news as we monitor the glass fire burning in the north bay, the school di due to that glass fire several north Bay School Districts have canceled Distance Learning for tomorrow. They include the Bennett ValleyUnion School District the kenwood School DistrictValley Union School District graven scene at Union School District and Sonoma Valley unified School District and all Santa Rosa City schools have also canceled Distance Learning for tomorrow, the district will continue however to serve grab and go meals. And our breaking news, a wildfire coverage continues as we go live to deer park in napa county. Well welcome back to our continuing wildfire coverage now in napa county. Kron fours theresa is live near deer park just east of saint where many buildings have been destroyed this week theresa. I size it is so terrible out here kind of just set the scene for you because a lot of people dont know exactly where im at in deer park to this is the intersection of silverado trail and dealer park road down deer park that is one 28 so this road kind of connects the 2 out here and then deer park, if you continue to take that you would get to and that area ill get to in a little bit because firefighters are very concerned about that community over there but. Take a look at this video a resident gave me he said that. As he was standing at his home and sunday night he said that the fire roared on that hilltop and then it spread so fast, he said that it was just minutes before it jumped with the embers flying through the air and then it lit Last Mountain on fire. And then it swooped in. Went to destroyed several homes and the deer park community. Its not exactly clear how many homes have been devastated by this fire because people havent been able to get back in and that fire officials have not started an official count. But everywhere i saw the homes have been completely destroyed also there was this Elementary School theres a sign out in front of the Elementary School that says that it was established back in 19 02. But the video that is just not good. The entire front office and some of the classrooms completely destroyed again i spoke with that resident and he kind of watch me through what he saw on sunday night as that fire bear down on this area. Joaquin around what have you notice. Lot of destruction which is from what ive seen i was here on sunday. Even sunday night as the just on this next ridge and then somehow it was you know, its so hot and so windy that the embers were ever filed a class not and i and say this home out last month burned in 20 minutes. Plus mount man homes et cetera. Yeah, so. And its just so dry and theres so much vegetation in this area that its you know theres nothing to stop it, especially once the wind picks up its game over for today. The work at one of the know i live here on the corner of glass about it so i lived here for 26 years and i said never says i like this. First experience for me, but hopefully the last. Definitely hopefully the last he said that. His home was spared they last like a barn in the back but again his home is right on silverado trail probably about a mile up the way here on the way to a lot of wineries that you might know dot corn is up there around our vineyards is out there as well as Boswell Boswell and that burned down to the ground i stopped at that winery and they asked me to keep going because they were just very upset and understandably so so we always try very respectful under those circumstances because theyre already suffering enough, no doubt sanaas and grand back to you. Than to receive mentioned angwin thats about 10 miles or so to the northeast of you and that is really a focus of firefighters tonight and Going Forward they they fear that the fire could go into that little town of a few 1000 people. Its just up the way here if you kept on going up that road. I was up at deer park and then i turned around but if i kept on going straight that goes into and went and i know a lot of people there i have family that live in this area theyve talked to residents that live up in that area and they are certainly evacuated. But theyre certainly very scared. And fire officials at the cal fire. News conference were talking about how there really. Putting all of their effort to try make sure that the destruction does not come in and swoop in into that town and cause further destruction that this area has already suffered. All right, theresa live for us tonight in deer park. Theresa thank you for that as we turn our attention now to the 4 zone forecast and check in with Lawrence Karnow really kind at the mercy of the weather once these fires get going the winds they shift around a bit. Were going to see that again right now were seeing a component outside more that westerly component you see the top of the Sales Force Tower here but all that fog that blanket of fog surging on shore so that increases the humidity the atmosphere slowing down the fires look from timber on you see the clouds are of course the most of this is near the coastline. But overnight tonight that will start to push further on shore a quality looking pretty good just inside the bay along the coastline, youre still looking at moderate amounts of pollutants inland surprisingly good in the north bay but weve had enough of a west southwesterly wind to improve their quality now the bay area air Quality Management is calling for some unhealthy air expected in the north bay also in the east bay poor quality in the south bay and moderate amounts as you approach the coastline, but i think it will be pretty fresh up toward the beaches for tomorrow just enough of that company you can see that south westerly component rain low clouds and the fog in the fresh air along the coastline and were going see some more fog overnight tonight thats going to i think penetrate some of the local valleys and into the santa rosa area and that is some good news certainly as we want to bring up the moisture as much as we can to slow down the fire and you can see that out of the fog kind of fills in the valley and around santa rosa in around the fires here were seeing that moving in maybe even a little drizzle along the coastline, some that dense thick fog early on then were going kind of shift gears i think as we get in thursday has received an little bit of a northerly component will call thermal trough going to start to move up the coastline, there tends to travel toward those that means we will see a change in the weather pattern so were not done with the heat just yet ridge of High Pressure sits over head. I think tomorrow were talking temperatures well in the 90s inland, maybe a little bit hotter on thursday with temperatures in low triple digits, then we started cooling trend and i think that last well into next week, those temperatures coming way down by late next week. All right, thanks lawrence up next firefighters battling that grass fire in the north bay are getting some emotional support. Her handlers name is heidi carmen and its so great to see our firefighters getting some emotional support from care of because you know they are they need it theyre out there fighting day after day care is there to give them the support that they need consider putting smiles on firefighters faces out there.
