Says peacekeeping is no longer and option no longer an option. Nigers military appointed Prime Minister is visiting chad, as the regional block ecoas pushes for a return to constitutional order. Theres been a rise of attacks since the military took power last month, including one on tuesday that killed at least 17 soldiers from niger. We have reports from nigers border with nigeria. They are deeply concerned of the threat of worsening violence in the west african country. Mike hanna is in washington with the latest. Reporter the u. S. State department has issued a statement expressing its concern about the worsening violence in mali, it points on u. N. Are busy withdrawing from the country following an order by the military government. That military government took over power in a coup a few years ago and since then they have basically turned against former western partners like france and the u. S. And have moved toward russianbacked groups like the wagner group. The u. S. State department issued sanctions against some of the mali government spenders because of their links with the wagner group. With the u. S. Experiencing the follow of a similar coup in niger, having seen one in neighboring burkina faso and neighboring mali, there is great concern about any instability in that region, given that niger was the u. S. s largest last standing ally and the coup happened recently. For the u. S. , its a major threat to National Security and a loss of its strategic allies in the region. But also the rise in armed militants that it sees as the chaos increases, forces such as isil, linked to al qaeda, gaining greater mobility, and this is something the u. S. Spain is part of the european union. So people see this as a possible route to a better and safer life. Malcolm webb, al jazeera, senegal. To the u. S. , where prosecutors in the state of georgia have proposed a trial date in march for the election interference case against former u. S. President donald trump. Pn 18 associates have he and 18 of his associates have been charged for racketeering and voter fraud in the u. S. State of georgia. We are following developments from atlanta. Reporter the Fulton County district has requested a trial date for donald trump and 18 codefendants. Willis wants march 4 to be the date that trial starts. Thats important because it is in the middle of a crowded legal calendar for donald trump. He has a number of criminal and civil cases that start from october of 2023 to may of 2024. That means at least some of those cases are likely to extend through the november 2020 four president ial election, where he is currently the leading republican candidate. Team trump has also requested that his case in georgia be moved to federal court. That will accomplish a number of things. For one probably a more sympathetic jury. Atlanta is a very democratic town in a largely divided state. They would be more likely to find people in a federal trial drawn from the state who will be more sympathetic to trump. If trump were to be elected or have an ally when the presidency during the presidency, that president is able to pardon federal charges, but not state charges. It would also serve the purpose of delaying the trial, because donald trump very much would like these trials to be resolved after the 2024 election. We are going to dive deeper into this story, frank bowman is a Professor Emeritus at the university of Missouri School of law and a former federal and state prosecutor, joining us from colorado. Weve got a date now, march 24th. I thought we were looking for a swift trial here. At least thats what we were told. Now we here in march of 2024. What happened to the swift trial . March of 2024, which is an extremely likely time, would be a remarkably Early Childhood for early trial date for a case of this complexity. Everybody will need his or her own lawyer, there will be a plenitude of pretrial motions, discovery issues, motions to sever, motions to dismiss, motion to transfer venue, so forth and so on. A case of this complexity if it were to go to trial in march of 2024 would be something of a legal miracle. I think it is extraordinarily unlikely that it will go forward then or anything like it. Largely because it is competing of course for mr. Trumps time with three other cases and three other jurisdictions. If i can jump in for a second, that really brings me to my next question, you are really speaking to that, the prosecutor had said that she wanted a swift trial, but how can you even have a swift trial, you have got 19 defendants. That seems literally impossible. You even said yourself it would be a legal miracle. Swift trial is a swift trial is relative. What would be an ordinary trial date for a piece of this complexity . For a case like this to be indicted in august and go forward in march of next year is not inconceivable, but given all the complexity, these kinds of things tend to take a very long time. Swift is relative in legal terms. In terms of the large number of codefendants, what does it say about the case the fact that it is so broad and some of the other cases have been tailored so narrowly . Just indicates that the local prosecutor in georgia has decided to take a different approach. The somewhat analogous case in federal court is brought in washington, d. C. With daniel as the only name doctoral with donald trump as the only named defendant. To get the trial done with pretty good speed. The prosecutor in georgia has taken a wider view, she seems to be saying what donald trump certainly at the head of this rico and that shes charged, and a great many of other people are responsible, and shes determined they are going to be brought to justice as well. One should also add, the fact all these other people are named as defendants places a considerable amount of pressure on them to plead and potentially cooperate against mr. Trump and others. Is there a concern that in fact this will be ultimately playing out so close to the u. S. Election . Is there concern about election interference given the fact that this will be running concurrently . Well, i think the election interference canard is really something mr. Trump and his supporters have raised. The election interference involved in this case and d. C. , with mr. Trump and his coconspirators attempting to overturn the result of the legitimate election at that point, with respect to mr. Trumps circumstance as a candidate, the truth is right now he is nothing more than just a guy who has been charged with a whole bunch of criminal offenses and the potential nominee of a major party. The presidency gives him no special rights and the courts of this country. In the course of this country. The former president continues to fund raise off of each of these indictments. Well, he does. There have been some reports each new indictment brings him another influx of money. Thats not something anybody can prevent. I think its a sad commentary rn electorate. That they think it is appropriate to give money to a guy who has been charged with so many crimes. But not something anybody can stops. Anybody can stop. It seems his Fundraising Efforts are running up against certain limitations. Hes running out of money. These as we know are very expensive cases to fight, as well as prosecute in the u. S. We really appreciate you lending your expertise. Thank you so much for joining us here on al jazeera. Staying in the u. We know there is a growing concern about the weather. You can probably see from the picture the wind has picked up significantly here today. There are two storm systems, they are not going to threaten making landfall here, but just like the hurricane, dora, that pushed these wildfires with winds up to 80 mph at times, these systems are expected to come by close enough to again cause strong wind to pick up and rain is on the forecast over the weekend. The Hong Kong Flagged vessel had been tracked and was the first ship to leave the port since the deal with russia collapsed last month. This comes hours after russian drones targeted grain silos and warehouses on a port by a river. The area was hit twice in overnight attacks. The river ports are the main export routes for ukrainian grain. Russia quit the grain deal that had allowed ships safe passage through the black sea. Grain can also be transported over land by truck or train, but the real option through poland and other eu members is hampered often by various countries using a different track size from ukraine. Another route is through the congested black sea port in romania, that is timeconsuming and also very costly. So is stripping on the danube river and the channel of canals.
