Mother has taken the step toward sustainability. This week, the denim label launched 60% Mother, a capsule collection that’s 60 percent overstock fabric (hence the name) from past seasons and 40 percent materials found at wholesale vintage recycling plants across Los Angeles.
“We are committed to only working with what is available at local rag houses as well as within our own inventory of excess fabric, damages, and overstock,” says Tim Kaeding, Mother’s cofounder and creative director, to
BAZAAR.com. “Each garment in the 21-piece capsule is deconstructed and reimagined creating unique features and characteristics.”

For more than a decade, Kaeding and his partner, Lela Becker, have built Mother into a brand beloved by celebrities (Meghan Markle is a devotee) and fashion insiders. The label is noted for its ’70s-inspired styles—think flared silhouettes, tattered treatments, and fun embroideries—along with focusing on amazing fits for all sizes. But what hasn’t been top of mind, at least until now, is producing pieces that don’t add to landfill waste.
