We have breaking news out of israel where outrage continues to grow today after the deaths of six hostages shot pointblank by hamas as idf forces were nearing their location in gaza. This morning, the largest general strike since the start of the israel hamas war took place, cross. This as prime Minister Netanyahu faces new and growing pressures to reach a ceasefire. Meanwhile at the White House, this hour, President Biden and Vice President harris are set to meet with the u. S. Hostage negotiating team in the Situation Room. Joining us now from Tel Aviv is nbcs matt bradley. Also with us is nbcs Gabe Gutierrez and admiral james stavridis. So matt, whats the latest there in israel right now . Yeah. Well, were seeing right now kind of the end of what was supposed to be a massive strike that was supposed to sprawl across the nation and really the intention was to bring israel to its knees. That was really what the protesters had asked for. They want to put the government on notice and force their hand when it comes to these negotiations to try to get some sort of Hostage Deal that would release what is almost now about 100 remaining hostages who were still in the gaza strip. Quite a few of them, dozens of them actually are thought to have been killed, from their own wounds they sustained on October 7th, or from israeli bombardment or their captors which is what we saw over the weekend. That is what sparked this latest round of massive protests. Hundreds of thousands of people who were in the streets all across the country arresting traffic, bringing this country to a halt and expressing just an emotion that weve seen on the streets for the past several months, but one that we havent seen expressed this forcefully before. Theyre hoping that the people in the hall of power will hear their voices. I spoke with one of the top opposition figures. Hes the head of the of one of the more Centrist Parties here. Hes a major prominent opponent of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He was walking amongst the protesters on a Foot Bridge above these sprawling protests last night. I asked him, why has there been no Hostage Deal so far . Heres what he told me. Why . Because the government failed to have a Hostage Deal even though the circumstances allowed it, and everybody who was on the professional side of the negotiation have said the deal is doable. This is why these people came here, because they understand we can have a Hostage Deal. We can bring them back home. So its not just Yair Lapid or politicians that are saying that. Everybody is blaming hamas for the deaths of these six young people. They were all 40 or younger. Theyre also blaming Benjamin Netanyahu and youre hearing an opposition political figure, but this was the mood on the streets. They were joining him in their Anger And Outrage at the political class on the right, and this has put them on notice. We still havent seen any real expression of change from netanyahu or his rightwing partners that they might try to compromise on this deal, that they might try to make changes to bring it to yes, but at the same time, everybody here is very certain that it is Benjamin Netanyahu himself who is standing in the way of these hostages Coming Home, jose. And matt, i understand that the funeral for the Israeli American person that was killed by hamas is actually happening right now. Thats right. Were starting to see that happening. Thats starting right now. His parents, hersh goldbergpolin, excuse me. They were there. The procession went from their home through the streets of jerusalem. This is obviously an extremely sober moment for so many people, not just here in israel, but also in the united states after those who saw this couple, these parents appealing to the entire nation in front of the democratic national convention. It was one of the more memorable moments of that convention, but ive spoken to these parents. My colleagues here have spoken to them. They have made the rounds in front of media and in front of the public over the last year. They are an outspoken an outspoken voice when it comes to freeing these hostages, and now their worst nightmares have finally come true, and, you know, it is just it just goes to show that when you talk about the rage on the streets, there really is also just genuine agony from so many people here in israel. Matt bradley, thank you so very much. Appreciate it. Gabe, mean while, what do we know about the White House at this hour . Hi there, jose. Good morning. Well, yes. President biden and Vice President harris are scheduled to meet with their national Security Team in the White House Situation Room this hour. Now we are here in pittsburgh where later on today the president and Vice President will make a rare joint appearance together on the campaign trail, but as you said, jose, first theyre meeting with the national Security Team this morning, and we understand President Biden is returning from his home in delaware to the White House before later on today coming here and jose, over the weekend, we saw those those written statements from President Biden and Vice President harris, the president saying he was devastated and outraged when he heard this news. Vice president harris calling hamas an evil terrorist organization, and yesterday national Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met virtually with the Family Members of those remaining hostages. They said that Jake Sullivan told them that the next few days will be critical to securing any type of Ceasefire Deal. Of course, jose, this has been a frustrating year for the White House. They have repeatedly said that they have been working around the clock for the Ceasefire Deal. Again, stakes incredibly high right now and the president and Vice President meeting with their national Security Team this hour in the White House Situation Room, jose. Gabe gutierrez, thank you so very much. Admiral, i just want to start your conversation with you on your reaction to the death of these six hostages. They were able to survive for so long, only to be shot as they were about to be rescued . Yeah. Unbelievably tragic, and terribly often this is how the story ends with hostages, and ill tell you why. I have been involved in many of these Hostage Rescue attempt attempts over the years. The captors have a protocol that if they hear shots fired and its approaching, their standing protocol, horrifically is simply execute the hostages and withdraw. Im sure thats what happened here. Its its a mark of complete Inhumanity And Barbarism on the part of hamas, and i think it speaks volumes, volumes of the foe, the implaquable foe that israel is engaged with. Admiral, these hostages were held, shot, and killed in rafah, an area that the world has been asking israel not to go into. Whats your reaction to that . These are incredibly hard choices. If it were me advising prime Minister Netanyahu, i would have started advising, take the Ceasefire Deal months ago, and heres why. Because in effect, israel can kind of have its cake and eat it too. They can take a ceasefire, take those hostages back, and at that point, the idf still has options. The idf Can Say, ah, the hamas is coming back. Well go back in. What would they have given up . They would have given up some palestinian prisoners. I think that would have been a reasonable swap, frankly, and thats why youre seeing probably close to A Million protesters on the streets of israel and again, population adjusted basis, jose. That would be a day in the united states where 35 Million americans were out protesting with one voice on a critical issue. Weve never seen a protest like that, nor has israel. And admiral, this Mornings Meeting in the Situation Room, what exactly do you expect hem to be covering . I think the tone of that meeting will be present israel and hamas with the final opportunity. Last exit before the bridge if you will. Its going to be maximized pressure, pull all the strings on our side, pressuring israel and asking our arab partners, qatar and egypt, to do the same with hamas because if we cant settle a ceasefire now in the wake of the horrific executions, its unlikely to me that theres going to be an opportunity in the future. This really feels to me like the last chance, and thats what you heard national Security Adviser Jake Sullivan who has been on this relentlessly. Thats what you heard him say in the last 48 hours. Well, we have enormous Sadness And Grief for the families of those beautiful six young people, and rage at our government and hamas of course, and the israeli streak has spoken as your previous guest mentioned. These are enormous numbers, and pretty much the political and the social spectrum of israel who are telling our government, enough. Enough of the delays. Enough of throwing new obstacles into the process of negotiating with the devil undoubtedly, you know, would be much easier for israel if we were negotiating with a rational, humane other side, but this is what we have. We absolutely must for the good of israel as a whole, the palestinian people surely, and for regional stability. This all has to end and the Lynch Pin of everything is getting our hostages home. Those who still might be alive, and those who have already been murdered. And so jonathan, how do you think and see that negotiation going forward to get any successful outcome with what you define as the devil . Well, this is a very hard thing to do, and, you know, this is i most governments simply do not negotiate directly or indirectly with terrorist organizations. In this case, hamas. Were fortunate in israel that we have three intermediaries, the united states of course, above all and the qataris and the egyptians who have stepped into that breach and in the best way they can, have been trying now for many, many months to get two men using our people as Human Shields and the people of gaza, and netanyahu getting them to yes, sir. Our entire israels entire Military And Intelligence senior leadership has been saying for weeks if not months that there is no justification for the continuation of this war from Israels Part and, in fact, the priority should be first and foremost and only, the return of these hostages. The israeli government with netanyahu at its head has been prioritizing this fantasy of total victory over hamas, and selling it to their own base in israel. Clearly, again, as we see in the Streets Yesterday and today, the vast majority of israelis simply have no faith in those words and are demanding that the hostages come home. And jonathan, i know yesterday you spoke with White House national Security Adviser Jake Sullivan about those still being held by hamas. What was that conversation like . What did he have to say . Well, we have been incredibly fortunate, and the families of the eight, now seven u. S. Hostages still held by hamas in our interactions with the biden Administration And Congress and we have a kind of sacred agreement between us that we keep those conversations amongst ourselves. What i Can Say is that ive felt since midoctober that the biden administration is totally committed to this mission of getting all of the hostages home, not just the americans. Everyone is incredibly frustrated and because these six young people who are being buried as we speak and yesterday, and six others that were recovered by the idf last week. Among them, four older members who died in captivity months after they were taken on October 7th. These are needless, senseless, and doubly horrific deaths, and so the u. S. Administration understands that, and they understand this ceasefire needs to get done. Our own israeli might prefer this for their own agendas. This is not about national security. Everyone in israel almost everyone in israel understands that. This is about the fulfillment of a political agenda and the retention of political power by netanyahus farright coalition. Jonathan, Talk To Me A Little Bit about sagi. He is my 36yearold little guy. He turned 36 a couple of weeks ago in captivity. We marked it, celebrated as best we could. He now has three Little Girls aged 9 months who hes never met, and 3 years and 7 years old who want their dad back, and sagi is a kind of archetype kal child, a lover of peace. Someone whos committed his entire adult life to the improvement of underserved communities in the southern part of israel, which include jewish, of course. Jewish israelis, and also other communities. It is extraordinarily ironic and horrific that hamas on October 7th targeted, whether they knew it or not, the spearhead of the israeli peace movement, the members of the people seen along the border, and these peaceloving young people who were celebrating in an outdoor concert that morning, you know, we all have had to have to take a lot of stock in where we stand right now, in terms of can we really have, you know, what would peace like with our neighbors because it wasnt just the terrorists rampaging through our communities, murdering wholesale, conducting mass rape. It was also many, many thousands of palestinian civilian looters who followed in their wake. I know i know that all of us would be better served with sagi back here and doing what he does best, creating things of beauty for the betterment of communities, and loving his Little Girls. Yeah. What do you say to that 7yearold Little Girl . What do you say to that 3yearold Little Girl as the days have become weeks and these weeks have become months . What do you say to them . Well, we tell them the truth, that we believe in our hearts that their dad is still alive. We dont really have proof of that for many, many months, but we believe that its true, and that we wont rest until he and 29 actually, of our kibbutzs people are home or at rest, and until then, we support them the best we can, and show them the love and double down on love because their dad is a guy guy, but very much is a girl dad. Labor day marks this point in the campaign where the average american voter really starts tuning in, and thats why were seeing Vice President harris, President Biden, and Vice President ial candidate governor Tim Walz on a Labor Day blitz across these Battleground States. Harris starting her day here in detroit in the next couple of hours before she joins President Biden in pittsburgh. Walz for his part is in wisconsin. These Battleground States often have a higher share too of Union Household voters and thats what theyre looking to attract the attention here today. A white House Official highlighting Vice President harris work specifically around organizing for federal workers. She led the Task Force on that, and Thats Something theyre really looking to capitalize on. President biden in pennsylvania this Evening Kind of foreshadowing the role hes going to be playing Side By side with Vice President harris going forward in this campaign. Here in detroit though, were also learning that the american federation of teachers, the union with about 2 Million members will be kicking off a Bus Tour Today in support of the Harriswalz Campaign highlighting how they want to push toward economic and educational opportunity, and those union voters here in these Battleground States are something the democrats are really looking to harness on especially as republicans are doing the same on the other side. Maura barrett in detroit, thank you so very much. Donna, what do you see as President Bidens impact and role in the campaign in these closing weeks . I think everybody acknowledges the president and this administration have been the most proworker, Prounion Administration that we have seen in decades, and there have been a lot of policy advances that are important to labor unions, and Joe Biden is a perfect emissary, you know, child of the middle class, believed in Police And Union and union organizing, and i think that they are playing to his strength and his role in this campaign, which is a great idea. I mean, its a perfect role for President Biden. And reena, how do you think republicans are going to react and see Bidens Role in this race . Well, i think weve entered the part of the campaign here on the second day of september where both tickets can no longer speak to their base. They have to decide that those are decided and what they have to move onto is speak entirely to the middle, jose. What republicans think at this point, doesnt quite matter so much in terms of what the hard republicans are already thinking. Its that central right person, that independently minded moderate that harris, walz, and trump need to go for, and i think theres a two sides to the Coin Strategy they can employ here. One side has fret on it. The other side has optimism on it and they have to be both adept at speaking and creating examples of how theyll address the threats to peoples livelihoods, whether they be domestic or foreign, and they need to speak about the foreign policies, whether they be aimed at physical security, making crime, Public Safety an issue. Those are what we have to hear now. This is the part of the campaign where we can no longer hear the Red Meat for the base type stuff. Theres just not an opportunity for that anymore. Its all about the middle. Yeah, and donna, democrats are launching a Bus Tour from trumps florida hometown this week in west palm beach. Does that signal the Harris Team sees florida as competitive . I think what it is, is first of all, youll have an Abortion Issue on the ballot in florida, and i think that that can actually help draw turnout, and i sort of disagree with rina. While the campaigns are trying to reach the middle and people who are not part of their base, they need to make sure there is high Turnout And Enthusiasm among their voters, and i think that the reproductive Rights Tour all through these states really highlights an issue on which Donald Trump has and republicans have been all over the map, and its a perfect opportunity to show a distinct contrast between a Harriswalz Administration and a trumpvance administration. This really leans into their strength and their candidacy, and although the president the former president said that abortion was not really going to be a big factor in this campaign, hes totally wrong, and i think the Harriswalz Team recognizes that,and theyre going to lean into their strength. Yeah. I mean, theres No Doubt that turnout is key for every and any candidate, especially november 5th. Turnout will be fundamental, and rina, do you think that trump is actually shedding support from for example, hardline conservatives, evangelicals with this recent what appears to be a flipflop or not clarity on abortion . The hearing should determine how this case will move forward following the Sport Decision on president ial immunity. Weve also just learned that a Fundraiser Set for thursday at trumps Jersey Golf Club for families of people charged in the January 6th attack is now postponed. No. At least according to the groups website, the fundraiser that was slated to be taking place at trumps bedminster Golf Club is postponed. He was never a confirmed attendee himself, though rudy giuliani, and other close allies of his, including Peter Navarro were. Notably, Donald Trump has appeared at such fundraisers for defendants in the past. Including last year in bedminster to support the January 6th defendants in their legal causes. He has called them patriots and said they should be pardoned. Its not clear when it will be delayed to, but it was meant as not only an aid to these defendants, but also to celebrate the justice for all song which was when Donald Trump can be heard Reciing The Pledge Of Allegiance while about 20 January 6th defendants were singing the national anthem. He has played that song at multiple events of his including one time last year in which January 6th Capitol Attack Footage was playing behind him as he stood with his hand on his heart. It is now delayed, and Donald Trump has not run from defending the individuals who are incarcerated and are currently still awaiting trial related to that attack. So lets glenn, lets take for a minute that it has been postponed. It may be held at a Future Date or not, but just think that the fact that Trump Wasnt hosting the event, but it was supposed to be at one of his Golf Clubs. Legally could there have been any repercussions for something like this . You know, the one way to be sure, jose, is to present the evidence to a Grand Jury. This is in a very real sense, when you read the fliers, the advertisement, this is Donald Trump allowing his Golf Club to be used to celebrate lawlessness and insurrection, to celebrate those people who attacked american democracy on January 6th. He also lent his image because we saw it on the flier, whether or not he was going to attend and speak is another issue, but you know, jose, we know that Jack Smith has been in the Grand Jury recently. How do we know that . He returned a Superseding Indictment and issued a statement that the evidence was presented to a brandnew Grand Jury to secure that Superseding Indictment. To this 30yearold prosecutor, i would be presenting all of this evidence of insurrection gave giving Aid And Comfort to the insurrectionists, and see if it was enough. There was enough to satisfy the elements and bring additional crimes against Donald Trump. What are the possible crimes against Donald Trump that could be brought forth in a Grand Jury if, glenn, or, you know, going in hypotheses of hypotheses, if one was to bring that evidence to a court . It is unlawful. It violates the federal law. If you give Aid And Comfort to an insurrection, now jose, these these developments are unprecedented. So we dont know, you know, if for example, courts including Appeals Courts would accept a legal theory that you know what . A President Of The United States who lost an election and then tried to unlawfully retain the power of the presidency, launching an attack on the u. S. Capitol to stop the peaceful transfer of power, if that person continues to give Aid And Comfort and hold fundraisers and celebrate those who attacked the capitol, the insurrectionists, does that satisfy the elements of Insurrection Or Sedition as those crimes are laid out in our federal statutes . That question cannot be definitely answered until a charge is brought before a Grand Jury and they believe there is enough to indict. I understand trump made new comments about the cases against him in the election this weekend . Of course. This comes after the Superseding Indictment that glenn is talking about, and the reality that there could be a chance that theres an evidentiary hearing before Judge Chutkan that comes before Election Day depending on how this thursday Judge Chutkan sees the calendar that is presented by the Special Counsel as well as trumps legal team, and how quickly she seeks to try to move forward with this Trial And Understanding that theres going to have to be difficult decisions made related to this supreme courts Immunity Decision and other motions dismissed, but i want to let you listen to this comment he made on fox about the very basis of the federal election interference indictment. Thousands of Hotel Workers are walking off the job with more possibly expected in the next couple of days, hitting the Picket Lines to protest for higher pay and better working conditions. Well, the workers are asking for better pay, better health care, better hours and support on their jobs. You know, this is really a story that extends all the way from the pandemic up until now. What happened during the pandemic was a lot of Hotel Chains like marriott and hyatt, they reduced their services and cut a lot of staff. What workers tell me from housekeepers to cooks s that after all of that, they are still feeling the financial squeeze even after the Pandemic Rebound has started to happen and travel has gone back to normal and these Hotel Chains have started making money again. Some of the Hotel Chains are telling us though they are trying to engage in negotiations, but after months of those negotiations stalling, people are angry and they want better on their jobs, they tell me, jose. The Starliner Spacecraft could return this week, week but without its crew. Nasa announced they may begin remotely Undocking Starliner beginning on friday, using Ground Teams to guide it lu departure, flight and landing. It was deemed too risky for astronauts, the two of them, to ride home on the capsule because of Thruster Issues with the spacecraft. Theyre expected to return to earth in a Spacex Vehicle early next year. Joining us now is professor and former astronaut mike mussimino. Lets talk about the return of the spacecraft guided from earth. How does that work . Instead of having the crew participate in undocking and lining, it will be controlled from the mission control center. Its done before, jose. It been done twice before, where they return the vehicle to earth without crew onboard and a few test flights. The second time they did that, the most recent time, a couple years ago, it also included an undocking from the Space Station. Its gone well before. Looks like friday will be the first attempt. What is it that is causing so much concern and so much caution . To not bring two astronauts back this way . What is the main issue thats causes the concern . They couldnt get comfortable with the failures they had with the thrusters. Theres 28 thrusters. Theyre used to align the spacecraft. They are needed for docking and reentrance. When they tried to dock, theyed a failures. Five came off and four back on. They couldnt get comfortable why that happened. They did testing on the ground. They tried to corroborate on the ground what they saw in space. And they couldnt get comfortable with the problem and it not happening again. They decided to keep the crew onboard. They can continue the operations of the Space Station, bring them home on another vehicle and return the starliner empty. Its the thruster they couldnt get comfortable with, enough so they could bring the Crew Home on the vehicle. That Thruster Issue is not a problem for spacex, i guess. These astronauts that were on a mission. They were clear that the mission would be eight or ten days. It certainly has gotten longer than that. Does that extra time cause any stress for the Space Station . Its be if the longest time. The rtaing crews are whats new. Does it cause any stress . It does . Some ways. As far as the station is concerned. Its been up there over a decade. Theyre okay with this as far as accommodating extra crew members. Plenty of supplies. Theres supply issues that come up. The biggest stress is for the crew and their families. Maybe not knowing when they will be coming back. Theres a feeling that we may be coming back at this time. It might be delayed. Weve had astronauts stuck i shouldnt say stuck. But delayed on their missions. Once the decision is made, everyone can get comfortable with it and change the mindset. Now they know what theyre in store for and what the plan is for them and their families, they are probably okay. Whats the continued value and importance of the international Space Station . Its become a laboratory for us to study the way the Human Body works in space. Getting us ready for longer voyages to the moon and mars. Its been a laboratory for over a decade. A lot of materials, a great place to study our planet, looking down from up there. Its been a laboratory in many areas and made contributions in various areas of science for a few more years. Years ago, i was on the Nasa Airplane to do the porabalas to seem like flight space. It was a challenge at all times. Is zero gravity a constant challenge for anyone that is experiencing it . You dont get used to it, do you . Or do you . You get used to it. That Airplane Isnt always easy. The airplane can be worse than what you experience in space. In the airplane, its 30 seconds at a time, zero gravity. Its over and over again. Sometimes turbulence doesnt help. But in space, you get to adapt. After a day or so, you feel good. On my case, the second time, i felt fine the whole time. I didnt feel well my first experience. But my Brain And Body adjusted. Were adaptable. You get used to it. Give yourself a few extra tries. I think i did 25 and i felt every one of them. I was able to hold things together. Thats good. Nasas perseveres rover is embarking on a Road Trip. What can we expect there . This is exciting. Theres no astronauts involved in this one. Its the rover thats been exploring for three years at the surface in the zero crater. Old, driedup lake bed. What the rover is going to do is climb to the rim of that crater. It will take about a month or so. It will take samples along the way. An aming accomplishment to read and measure and take samples. Its been taking samples. And hopefully, they can figure out a way to get samples back. Thats the goal here. Its doing a lot of great sips and exploration. Thanks for being with us. In my pleasure.
