The stone, the fuel that will bring home the remaining 101 hostages. I am honest, and i say its not that hersh was perfect, but he was the perfect son for him, and i am so grateful to god for 23 years i was privileged to have the most stunning honor to be hershs mama. Truly heart breaking Eulogies Yesterday from the parents of hersh goldberg. Pollin. His body and the bodies of five other hostages were recovered over the weekend in southern gaza. Their deaths ignited massive protests across israel, putting more pressure on Benjamin Netanyahu to reach a Ceasefire And Hostage deal. Well go through all of that in just a moment. Plus, well bring you the latest from the Campaign Trail as we are now just over two months from election day. Good morning, and welcome to Way Too Early on this tuesday, september 3rd. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day with us. We have a lot to get to this morning, and we will begin this morning with the recent and heart breaking developments out of The Middle East where, on saturday, the Israeli Defense Forces found the bodies of six hostages inside a tunnel under the gazan city of rafah. Among them 23yearold american israeli Hersh Goldbergpolin. All six hostages were captured october 7th, five from the super Nova Festival and one from a dibuttes in israel. A forensic examination found all six hostages were shot and killed at close range, executed. A spokesperson from Israels Health Ministry says they were murdered thursday or friday. Their bodies were found less than a mile from the tunnel where a 52yearold israeli hostage was rescued last week. Hamas claims the hostages were killed by idf fire. They claim israels military says is false and that there was no exchange of fire in the tunnel upon that rescue. Vice president Kamala Harris released a statement in response to the news that reads in part this way hamas is an evil terrorist organization. With these murders hamas has even more american blood on its hands. I strongly condemn hamas continued brutality and so must the entire world. The news has also led to renewed criticism of israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. When asked by Reporters Yesterday whether netanyahu is doing enough to secure a Ceasefire And Hostage Release Deal, president Joe Biden simply answered, no. President biden and Vice President harris both spoke separately with the parents of Hersh Goldbergpolin On Sunday. In a statement President Biden said his parents have been relentless and irrepressible champions of their son and all the hostages held in unconscionable conditions. I admire them and grieve with them more deeply than words can express. Hersh goldbergpolin was laid to rest in jerusalem yesterday. Hundreds lined and packaged the streets show support to the hostages who remain in captivity. Earlier in the day they delivered Heart Wrenching eulogies of their son. The word ive received from people, thousands of messages is im sorry. Hersh, we failed you. We all failed you. You would not have failed you. You would have pushed harder for justice. You would want to understand the other, to bridge differences. You would challenge more people to challenge their own thinking. And what you would be pushing for now is to ensure that your death, the deaths of all the soldiers, and so many innocent civilians are not in vain. How do we live the rest of our life without you . I pray that your death will be a Turning Point in this horrible situation in which we are all entangled. I take such comfort knowing you were with from what i have been told, they each were delightful in very different ways, and i think that is how the six of you managed to stay alive in unimaginable circumstances for so very long. You each and every single one of you did every single thing right to survive 329 days in what im pretty sure can only be described as hell. I send to the families my deepest sympathies for what we are all going through and for the sickening feeling that we all could not save them. The families, of course, so familiar to viewers. They break on our air, spoke at the dnc, been tireless advocates for their son. Our condolences go to them. Thousands of israelis, meanwhile, participated in mass protests this weekend over the news of the deaths of those six hostages. The Hostage Family Forum estimates that roughly 300,000 people attended demonstrations in Tel Aviv On Sunday alone, although Nbc News cannot independently verify that number. The protesters expressed outrage over prime Minister Netanyahus Handling of the war and called on the israeli government to make a Ceasefire Deal to bring the remaining hostages home. The massive demonstrations were called for by the head of israels biggest union which represents hundreds of thousands of workers across Health Care and banking. The Call To Action was also supported by israels Manufacturers Association as well as several municipalities and councils across the country. However, the protests were ordered to end Monday Afternoon after Israels Labor Court ruled in favor of a petition by the state. Joining us now is independent journalist covering The Middle East, noga she was in attendance at Hershs Funeral and has been covering the protests as well. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. Lets start with that protest movement. It really surged this weekend. Tell about the tenor there in the populous as the nation reacts to this terrible news, and tell us how theyre responding to prime Minister Netanyahu. Right, good morning. You know, its an interesting phenomenon that israel is seeing, which is something like a cleavage of society, a total break between the people, the citizens, and the government. And this really exploded into sight over the last 24 hours. As you said, about 280,000 or 300,000 israelis rallied in Tel Aviv on Sunday Night. Protest leaders estimate that around the whole country about half A Million israelis rallied. Thats the equivalent of 15 Million americans, and that is massive. And yet at the same time last night at The End of 24 hours of nonstop public protests, the israeli Prime Minister made a statement to the press in which he basically said to all those people, im not listening to you. They were protesting against his management of the war, demanding a ceasefire and demanding, and im quoting, that everything be done to bring the hostages home. A majority of israelis according to all polls feels that if Israel Cant protect its own citizens, if israel is incapable of making sure they can get back home alive, that the state and im quoting the former head of the masoud, theres no justification for there being a state. Its that serious. Whereas the government has all but announced that its War Aim is to hold onto the gazaegypt border to try and, quote, destroy hamas without explaining in detail what that means. And if the hostages pay with their life, this is whats understood, that just has to happen. Lets go a little deeper on these current negotiations. We heard from President Biden over weekend suggesting in his estimation prime Minister Netanyahu is not doing enough to get a deal done. Theres a sense the president may offer a final take it or leave it deal to israel and hamas in the coming days. Walk us through is there any Expectation Israel will get to yes. Look, its really hard for me to say and depends on almost intangible things at this point. I know for a fact the White House has been very, very frustrated with netanyahu for months. The problem is hes the head of a very important allied nation. He was legally elected, and the united states certainly the President Of The United States has to watch out for the larger picture of american security, American National Interest in the entire middle east. So attacking publicly attacking has to be a calculated move that takes those american interests into account. I do think that as we see President Biden no longer as an electoral candidate and more unfettered as a president , i dont think we should be surprised to see him respond more candidly to Netanyahus Kind of slippery actions. So what netanyahu is doing is on the one hand saying, yes, i accept all the american conditions. But then behind the scenes under cover of saying hes just asking for clarphics, netanyahu is actually imposing conditions that torpedo these deals. So the White House is left looking kind of naive as if it said, yes, israel has accepted our offer, and netanyahu says, yeah, sure. But everyone knows behind the scenes he has slipped in these changes, and that gap is what complicates things both for the united states and for the people of israel. Independent journalist, thank you for your Reporting And Insight this morning. We will have much more from The Middle East later in the show. Thank you, again. Next up here, President Biden joins Vice President Kamala Harris on the Campaign Trail for the first time since he left the 2024 race. Well take a look at the Pairs Labor Day pitch to union voters. And the Harriswalz Campaign spent the holiday speaking to Union Workers in Battleground States. The Vice President started her day in detroit, where she was joined by the President S of unions representing auto workers, labors, Union Workers and teachers. She then traveled to pittsburgh for her first joint Campaign Event with President Biden since he dropped out of the race. Both Biden And Harris promised a future of fighting for workers while criticizing Donald Trumps record of supporting Union Busting policies. I come from two neighborhoods where its not hard to say the Word Union. But you know what . The fact of the matter is an awful lot of politicians have vubl saying the Word Union like working people. Guess what, im not afraid to and neither is kamala. Wall street didnt build america. Unions build america and unions built the middle class. Remember as President Donald Trump blocked overtime benefits for millions of workers. He opposed efforts to raise the minimum wage. As the President Said, he appointed Union Busters to the national labor relations board. And dont forget he supported socalled right to work laws. Democratic Vice President ial nominee Tim Walz spoke at a Labor Fest in Milwaukee Yesterday and criticized trump and his Running Mate j. D. Vance. I remember a time when republicans talked about things like freedom, they meant it. They would never turp their back on our allies, but thats not these guys. Trump and vance, when they talk about freedom means government should have the freedom to invade every corner of our life. They talk about small government, small enough to be in your bedroom. Small enough to be in your exam room, small enough to be in your library tell you the things you should make decisions about. And even though Labor Day is the beginning of the stretch run, Trump And Vance took the day off from the Campaign Trail. The former president wrote a series of posts on Social Media wishing a happy Labor Day to all americans who are suffering this Holiday Weekend and blamed inVice President for Gas And Grocery prices as well as transportation costs. Now, both Trump And Vance will be back on the Campaign Trail tomorrow. The former president will be in pennsylvania for a Town Hall with Fox News while vance will appear at an event in arizona. And we are now one week away one week from that highly anticipated debate between trump and harris. Next up well turn to sports and bring you some highlights from major League Baseball including last nights stealing spree for Dodgers Soup Star shohei ohtani. Fans shellshocked. The eagles opened their Coach Era at bc with a 2813 Road Victory over fcu that drops the tenth ranked Sem Foals to 22. We turn now to baseball. Well start out in arizona. Shohei ohtani boosted his stolen Base Total this season to 46 with another three steals. He got three last night against the diamondbacks. Meanwhile Freddie Freeman Hit Two Home Runs, drove in five as the dodgers drove in for the diamondbacks. To baltimore now. The lowly White Sox dropped to an unfathomable 31 and 108 after they lost their 20th straight game which featured Righthander Chris Phlegson as their starter. Oo this is a good book title. Welcome back to Way Too Early. It is just before 5 30 a. M. On the east coast, 2 30 out west on this tuesday morning. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for being with us. Former President Donald Trump said he had every right to interfere in the 2020 election. The 2024 Gop President ial nominee made the stunning statement during an interview that aired Sunday Night on Fox News while claiming that the dozens of criminal charges he faces connected to the indictments actually helped boost his Poll Numbers. Take a listen. Whoever heard you get indicted for interfering with a president ial election where you have every right to do it. You get indicted and your Poll Numbers go up. When people get indicted, your Poll Numbers go down, but it was such its such nonsense. The Harriswalz Campaign issued a statement on trumps claim writing in part this. Everything Donald Trump has promised on the Campaign Trail from terminating the constitution to imprisoning his pliical opponents and promising to rule as a dictator on Day One makes it clear that he believes he is above the law. Now, trump is claiming he had every right to interfere in the 2020 election. He did not. Meanwhile, trump is walking back these comments he made last week questioning floridas sixweek Abortion Ban. I think the sixweek is too short. It has to be more time. So and ive told them that i want more weeks. So youll vote in favor of the amendment . Im voting i am going to be voting that we need more than six weeks. The republican president ial nominee has now come out against the Florida Ballot Measure that would extend the time women in the state have to get an abortion, something he says supports. Conservative backlash to his earlier comments was swift with some on the right Warning Trump was risking losing a key block of antiabortion voters. Trump then tried to cleanup his comments on friday. Are you voting yes or no on amendment four in florida . So i think six weeks, you need more time than six weeks. Ive disagreed with that right from the early primaries when i heard about it. I disagreed with it. At the same time, the democrats are radical because the nine months is just a ridiculous situation, where you can do an abortion in the ninth month. And, you know, some of the states like minnesota and other states have it where you can actually execute the baby after birth. And all of that stuff is unacceptable. So ill be voting no for that reason. That part, of course, not true. The Harris Campaign issued a statement following trumps flipflop saying this. Donald trump just made his position on abortion very clear. He will vote to uphold an Abortion Ban so extreme it applies before many women even know that they are pregnant. Joining us now Politics Reporter for semafor, shelby talcott. Trump has been twisting himself in contortions on the issue of abortion throughout the campaign and particularly in the last week, flipflopping, changing his position repeatedly when pressed about this Abortion Ban. Take us into the Campaign Thinking here. Do they think this is at all helpful . Well, i think at The End of the day the Campaign Advisors that i speak to and people close to the campaign have argued that abortion is a tough issue for them. They acknowledge that private even as just a few weeks ago when Donald Trump whd asked about the topic thought he was going to be a nonissue this election. The campaign doesnt think so. Its not a topic they are trying to really highlight even as Donald Trump keeps saying these things, and they acknowledge that at The End of the day its something tough, and weve seen that throughout the midterms and throughout the last few years. Is there concern that actually some of the prolife voters out, like, wouldnt vote for trump. We know they wouldnt across the Aisle Vote for harris. Trump has delivered them to the Supreme Court that overturned roe v. Wade. Is there a real fear, though, they could stay home this time around . Its a really good question. Some people really believe if Donald Trump frustrates them enough they will stay home. But ive heard arguments from his campaign saying, listen, Donald Trump did all these things in this first term for the antiabortion activists and for that movement. And therefore when push comes to shove and they realize who the alterative is theyre going to show up and vote for him. Shelby, give us a 30,000 Foot Look if you will how the Trump Campaign View the race right now. Polls are tight but harris has small leads in most Battleground States at the moment. Trump took the day off yesterday from the Campaign Trail. He talked about having the right to interfere with the 2020 election, and now were a week away from the debate. Where do they think what does the Trump Campaign think they need to do in this next week or so . The big thing to remember is Donald Trumps campaign believes that Quoteunquote Harris Honeymoon we heard so much about since she got into the race is waning. So when i talk to campaign aides, and theyve said this publicly, they believe essentially the race starts now. And so were seeing Donald Trump really ramp up his his where he is going in each state. Hes going to the Battleground States. He was not out this weekend, but he will be out this week, and hell be out next week. And hell be going to the debate. The Debate Prep is going to be key. Now, Donald Trump doesnt do traditional Debate Prep, as you and i both know, but his campaign is aware how important this debate is, and how important how important it is when it comes to that argument about muted mics and how hes going to be perceived. All right, well be watching for that one week from today. Shelby, thank you as always. Well talk to you again soon. Next up here well get the latest in Business News from our friends at cnbc and some insight on the markets in this shortened Trading Week. Way too early will be right back. And in the wake of the six hostages being murdered by hamas, the push for a Ceasefire And Hostage Release Deal is facing renewed urgency. Vice president harris and President Biden met with the u. S. Hostage Negotiation Team at the White House yesterday. Over the past few days the administration has been intensely engaged in discussions about how to secure the release of those still being held in gaza. After months of trying to reach an agreement, President Biden may offer a final take it or leave it deal to israel and hamas as soon as this week. Joining us now former spokesperson for the u. S. Mission to the united nations, hagar chemali. She also worked at the national Security Council and the treasury department. Some of this will be speculation, but what would a take it or leave it deal look like . President biden and his team, of course, have spent months and months trying to get this across the finish line. Not a success yet. What could be in store . Its a little bit of an odd statement. The u. S. Is trying to play hardball here because netanyahu has repeatedly put the united states in a difficult position. Both israel and hamas agreed to the contours of a Ceasefire Deal back in may when the biden administration proposed it, and since then hamas has been very difficult. But netanyahu has well. He has added elements to it, and this is the key Sticking Point now, he wants control over the Philadelphia Corridor. Hes insisted on that even as of last night after the six hostages were killed over the weekend. And so the u. S. In saying were going to its take it or leave it is basically saying were not going to mediate anymore, were not going to be the one pushing for you to push for Ceasefire Deal, but i dont believe that to be honest with you. I think theyre trying to play hardball because at The End of the day theres still american hostages. We have an interest in this war as well. Its hard to imagine the president would walk away from trying to get a deal and get the hostages home. This Hardball Push now, do we think netanyahu will be at all receptive . In two ways. On one Hand Hamas has achieved their goal in increasing pressure on netanyahu to get to a deal. And if there were every ripeness for a Ceasefire Deal, it is really now. Youve had the most mass protests youve seen in the past 11 months of fighting that took place every these hostages were killed. So youve got israeli citizens who are really angry, really struggling with this grief, who want netanyahu to reach a deal. And netanyahu is trying to play both sides. Hes saying im going to reach a deal but im also going to continue this War And Defeat hamas. At The End of the day he knows if he reaches a deal the far right member of his government are cogoing to collapse his government. In the past he has shown willingness to bend to public pressure. When there were mass protests about his judicial overhaul, he agreed to delay it, for example. Theres a chance there. And if theres ever a right to reach a deal, its now. Its tenuous for sure. Lets go into the Situation Netanyahu faces. Hes known as a political survivor, but hes in a real predict right here. The anger, hes being blamed for those hostages. Obviously hamas is the evil force who did this, but theres a real frustration among the israeli people a Deal Wasnt reached sooner. And that frustration is fair. I cant verify this, but there are reports he told his Defense Minister gallant, and theres a lot of daylight between the two. This is Defense Minister, his current Defense Minister where he told the Defense Minister he was prioritizing having control over that Philadelphia Corridor, over the lives of hostages. Whether or not thee showed that, his actions show hes prioritizes that. Its important to understand the israeli and jewish psyche, this sanctity of life. Hes not only going after what the majority want. At the same time killing hostages while hamas has increased pressure on netanyahu, theyre putting themselves in a position of weakness because theyve traded away these valuable bargaining chips. Theyre valuable assets and so netanyahu is banking on this idea he can still pressure for control over the Philadelphia Corridor because theyve gone and killed these six hostages. Hostages remain in captivity and humanitarian crisis in gaza only gets worse. Hagar, thank you as always. Next up well go to cnbc for an early look whats driving the markets. So stock futures dropped sharply every night as we began a shortened Trading Week. Whats driving the selloff . Yeah, good morning, john. Its bip a while. I hope you had a good, long weekend. One thing for sure the markets are taking in a little bit from it Data Point we see last week. What Data Points could come to fore this week all around Interest Rates being the key factors to look out. Were also at The End of earnings season. Of Course Markets will be looking what happens out of nvidia following what was last weeks 7 decline then across the week after the fall on nvidia. Will this Trading Week show some respite, some gains for some of the tech players . In fact, in the month of august alone we actually saw technology stocks only manage to gain around 1. 5, but there was a 5 gain for some of other stocks, Health Care, industrials all of those finding upward momentum. Is this the key trade . Does that mean youre seeing that change then in leadership for the Equity Market . All right, so the latest Inflation Data that was released back on friday shows that the u. S. Consumer is still holding strong. Tell us about what and what impact it could have on possible rate cuts. Yeah. So it kind of comes in line with expectations then and gives a sense to the federal reserve that cutting Interest Rates by that 25 Basis Points which is that 69 chance according to the projections then by something called the Cme Watch Tool points to a 69 chance of that now happening. Clearly then the market is now anticipating at least well see a 25 Basis Cut then in those Interest Rates. And its really key and important because that Data Puz prefaced of having things like Job Numbers and inflation that came out as well. We have nonfarm payrolls data, that all important data that roiled markets the beginning of august, well that comes out again this friday. How important will that be towards shifting things as well towards equities and Interest Rates. Well certainly cover that when it is released. Lastly, volkswagen is considering whether to close factories in germany for the first time in its 87year history. Tell us why and what impact it could have to other major Car Makers in the auto market. Yeah, so theres a big question whether this is an Auto Industry Story a specific volkswagen story. Volkswagen has gone through a cost saving program which hadnt worked out and theyre looking now at reducing work forces. And that ultimately means some of the less efficient factories could actually be culled then at this stage. It looked like there could be at least two culled, in fact, in germany, which would be absolutely massive for meeting show a clear showdown between the two companies. Volkswagens Share Price has gone down dramatically over the last four, five years, as well. No Dp Gains really over that ti period. A lot of hurt if that company. Looks like a difficult time ahead. All right. Live from london, thank you. Up next on Way Too Early, back to politics. Donald trump calling for republicans to shut down the government over claims of voter fraud. Well talk about the former President S influence on the party with congress set to return. When they come back, they may face a potential Spending Fight on capitol hill. Then, coming up on morning joe, well bring you live reporting from telaviv amid renewed pressure on the israeli government to secure a Hostage Release Deal with hamas. Nd activity. It provides 3x Stress Sweat protection. Secret works. [ ] welcome back. Donald trump is now calling for a Government Shutdown over unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud. The former President Said late last week that republicans in congress should shut down the government if democrats dont agree to legislation barring noncitizens from voting, which, we note again, thats already illegal. Trump continues to claim without evidence that many noncitizens voted in the past president ial election. The comments come as congress faces a deadline by The End of the month to pass a Spending Bill to prevent a partial Government Shutdown. Joining us now, congressional Investigations Reporter for the washington post, jackie alemany. She is also an msnbc contributor. Jackie, good to see you. Lets talk about this idea of a Government Shutdown. First of all, trumps claims, theyre nonsensical. There are already laws in place to prevent noncitizens from voting. How are republicans reacting to his demand . Yeah, john, you already have speaker Mike Johnson pandering to former President Donald Trump as we get close to election day, trying to attach what democrats are calling this poison pill, this save act, to any sort of continuing resolution that needs to be agreed upon by The End of the month, or else we could have a potential Government Shutdown. That being said, the politics around the save act, even though voting as a noncitizen is already illegal in the u. S. And this is sort of a fear tactic, as democrats are calling it, to scaremonger ahead of the november election, there were five democrats that voted for this in july. But the bigger problem for republicans here is that Mike Johnson doesnt have the 218 votes that he needs from republicans to get through any sort of continuing resolution, at least in this moment. As we talked about really for the last two years of this congress, theres still not enough republicans who want to vote for any funding at all, even though its just bootstrapping the government until really next march when republicans are hoping that Donald Trump will already be in the White House. Beyond trumps threats, there are others on the far right in the gop who are also potentially pushing for a shutdown. I mean, that seems like terrible politics just two months ahead of an election year. Republicans likely would take the blame for a shutdown. What are the chances this could happen . How nervous are some in the gop that it could . Absolutely. You make a really good point. I should also note, this proposal is dead on arrival in the senate and at the White House and would never ultimately make it through. Would get kicked back to republicans to deal with all over again. But there are a handful of moderate republicans who are already worried about their electoral prospects, especially in the wake of Joe Biden passing the torch to Kamala Harris. All these numbers at a State Level really reshifting. This is a bad electoral tactic, especially causing a shutdown right before the election. That being said, i think were going to see this rigmarole we see when it comes to a Government Shutdown. Eventually, even though there will be limited time, republicans and democrats will sit down at the table, but theyre going to have to pass 12 different bills which is going to be quite a bit of a lift. Theyll come back next week and hopefully pick this up asap. You mentioned, congress about to return after its august recess. In more only a short time before heading out onto the Campaign Trail. What else needs to get done here . Theres quite a number of things. It was sort of starting already to feel like a lame duck session, but theres actually some big Ticket Items that need to be done other than funding the government. Theres the Workforce Innovation and opportunity reauthorization act. For the first time since 2014, this massive package that already made it through the house and needs to get kicked back from the senate to actually vote on the final package, were told that the senate is expected to have a markup of that final package around the rules that dictate the way workers are treated in the workplace. That is going to be expected at some point in november. Thats something that i think republicans and democrats realize is a priority to at least get done before november. Jackie, lets turn to november. Indeed, the battle for both the house and senate. Whats the latest the party insiders are telling you as to where they think this will go . Who will have control of those two chambers . Well, it is really interesting. You know, when everyone left for the summer, as you know, as we repeatedly discuss, people were in a state of panic over Joe Biden. It was after his disastrous debate performance, and the numbers and the polling that people were seeing, the downstream effects of bidens impact on members at the bottom of the ticket were not good. That has completely changed. Were going now into a congress where democrats are seeing a renewed source of Hope And Energy to potentially recapture the democratic majority in the house maybe, maybe maintain the majority in the senate. That being said, there are a number of tight races that were watching closely from, you know, montana, especially in the senate, to, as weve repeatedly discussed, this very tight margin in the house. Republicans have a fiveseat majority there. There are a number of people who are running for reelection in the swingy, moderate districts who do still maintain a lead. But democrats are planning on now running with kamala at the top of the ticket and are feeling much more positive about their prospects. Certainly, odds are both houses decided by razor thin margins. The washington posts jackie alemany, thank you, as always. Well talk soon. Thanks, john. Thanks for getting up Way Too Early with us on this tuesday morning. Morning joe starts right now
