We begin this hour with Breaking News in the russia ukraine war. Hours ago russia launched one of its deadliest strikes since the war began in central ukraine. The missiles hit a nearby Train Facility near a hospital. Nbcs chief foreign correspondent, richard engel, has been on the ground in ukraine and will be with us in just a moment. Meanwhile we will bring you that interview that richard just held with zelenskyy this hour. The latest demonstrations sparked by the discovery of the six bodies of six hostages being tpheld gaza, shot and killed by hamas as idf forces were close by. In an address on monday, israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized for the deaths but reit mated his demands that they remain at the border. In washington, President Biden may offer a final take It Or leave it deal to israel or hamas as soon as this week according to two people briefed on the discussions. A former hostage, whose husband keith, is still being held by hamas was joined by my colleague, ana cabrera. I believe that netanyahu is killing the hostages, and thats whats happening. The six hostages that were killed, it was just too much for me to handle, and too much for the whole country to handle and thats what you see, the people have had enough. Joining us now, Matt Bradley from Tel Aviv, and Monica Alvarez in washington with us, and the co anchor of pbs news hour, and the former Editor And Chief of the jerusalem post. Matt, what were you expecting to see there in Tel Aviv tonight . Thats kind of a big question here, jose, whether or not we will see the enormous crowds like we have been seeing over the past two days. On Sunday Evening we saw a huge outpouring of Grief And Rage against the Prime Minister. A lot of them angry at hamas. They are the ones that wielded the knife and a lot saying its prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who, as you just heard, they believe has blood on his hands. Whether the enormous amount of momentum will be extended the Third Day and protests tonight, and the voices outside will be heard in the halls of power in jerusalem. We have seen them taking their case and some amount of violence to the prime Ministers Door in jerusalem, right where he lives and in his office, right around there. These protests are not new. We have seen these before, but its a matter of size and an expression of rage, and thats why its new, the six bodies discovered over the weekend. We did finally hear from prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last night, and as you mentioned he was asking for the forgiveness from the Family Members but then pivoted into almost a lecture to the israeli public saying he was not going to be yielding on one of the main demands, and his insistence and top lieutenants that they keep a presence in the Philadelphia Corridor, and its another name for the southern border and egypts sinai peninsula. He had props and brought out a map and was showing the israeli public where the Philadelphia Corridor is and why they need to maintain a true presence there, and he says its a place where militants from hamas are able to bring weapons into the Gaza Strip, and he said this is what has been fueling all of the violence since October 7th coming out of the Gaza Strip. When you talk to protesters, they are sickened by this and see it as another Roadblock Standing in the way of a deal that could free the rest of the hostages and thats why you are hearing things like what you just played, they do believe netanyahu has blood on his hands. Because hamas and israel were not able to come to an agreement they say the only way to free the hostages is with a negotiated peace that will bring some measure of peace to the Gaza Strip and free a number of people, and many cynically believe that netanyahu is trying to keep the war going in order to save his own political skin. Jose . Monica, meanwhile, we have heard some in the united states saying netanyahu has not done enough. Going forward, monica, what is the President Planning to do . He held a meeting in the Situation Room with Vice President harris and top national security officials to discuss exact next steps on how to handle this. Remember in the last couple of weeks the u. S. Had been trying to go towards the proposal that could buy time to iron out some of the key differences between israel and hamas and felt they were making some incremental progress there, and now the events of the weekend and the tragic murders of the six hostages adds urgency to the situation, and theres questions and pressure that is growing negotiations, and the u. S. Has played a key role in the past few months. Is the u. S. Really prepared to do that . Thats an open question. It might be one of the only final moves that the u. S. And that President Biden have left at this time. Im told they are still discussing a range of options and it has not been decided upon necessarily, and we know behind the scenes theres a diplomatic push that continues and we have seen the top officials like the Secretary Of State and others traveling back and forth to the region to try and do more work with partners in Qatar And Egypt to, again, work on some of the key gaps that are the main issues and still outstanding, and some of these are the same ones we were talking about months ago and remain an obstacle today. President biden, when asked if he believes prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is doing enough to get to a deal and firmly said no, they did expand on that a little bit with a u. S. Official saying of course the u. S. President blames hamas for the deaths of the hostages and at the same time they said the president will not be shy about applying more pressure to the israeli government to have a deal, and the Prime Minister is as dug in as ever, it appears there in israel, and the question is what can the u. S. Do to change any of that . The president and the Prime Minister have had tense Phone Calls in recent months, and the question now jose is whether they will get back on the phone to solve or work on anything else. Its notable the president there, which you are seeing on your screen now, when he was leaving in his second round of questions with reporters for the day, he told us hes not negotiating with prime Minister Netanyahu directly, but hes talking with his partners in the region and other countries doing the mediating and they are still hopeful. The president has been the one that is the internal optimist that something can get done and are pushing for some movement as early as this week. Thank you both so much for being with me this morning. I want to ask a broader conversation to begin our conversation. One of the hallmarks of diplomacy, is people to be able to protest and go out in the streets and not be threatened by that protest, and thats what we see in israel and maybe a contrast to other countries in the region. But theres so much pain going around. You see on the one hand people clearly pointing to hamas in the streets of jerusalem and Tel Aviv, pointing at hamas for what they just did, but then theres also massive, it seems, feelings that netanyahu in many ways is to blame for this. How do you square that . Well, jose, i would say that tensions and emotions are running as high today as they have at any point in this war. The pain is palpable and heartbreak is real. These six people had become household names, and of course many of us know the name of hersh goldberg, and hundreds of thousands of people are pouring into the streets of Tel Aviv. Theres broad recognition that hamas is the entity that murdered them, the one that took them captive in the first place and held them under deplorable conditions and then pulled the trigger and killed them, but theres anger directed at the Prime Minister and his government for not closed a deal earlier and not being as forthcoming he and his government could have been in reaching that deal. Its yet to be seen if the protests continue in the next few days and what results that might have. I am wondering what your thoughts are, if theres another failure to reach a deal, what could it mean for the entire region going forward . Jose, i mean, a deal i feel like we have been talking about this for so long now about how close negotiators come and how there may be another break through and what is proven to be true again and again, theres always been something standing in the way. Previously we should be clear, the biden administration has been very forthright to say it has been hamas standing in the way of a deal, and this change in tone we are hearing from the biden administration, in which they are saying netanyahu has done all he can to work towards a deal, it points to frustration because they have not been able to negotiate another ceasefire to surge aid to stop the killing, and the Death Toll topped 40,000 palestinians there, and in israel, to free the hostages, that sense of frustration is something i have heard personally from many of the Hostage Families i have spoken to over the last 11 months, and they have felt their prime Minister Netanyahu was not prioritizing the release of their families and would acknowledge openly the political pressure hes under from the far right members of his government to whom he is beholden. They say they are prosecuting the war at the expense of their family. I will point out, as monica did, this is the president here in the united states that believes in International Law and who believes in pressure from allies working towards the common goal, and who said yesterday to reporters that Hope Springs Eternal and hope is something that palestinians on the ground in gaza and also everybody across israel, most imminently, these Hostage Families needs to keep alive right now. And Yesterday Netanyahu responded to the growing pressure saying nobody will preach to him. Can he keep ignoring the unrest at home and continue on this path . Well, the Prime Minister i apologize. Go ahead. Sorry. Its okay. Look, the Prime Minister has resisted similar pressure in the past, most notably around the reform in which his government was trying to advance last year, and the protests at the time were larger than the ones we have seen the past few days and he stood firm at that time and its possible he will do the same thing now. And the question is if members of his government are able to withstand the pressure and thats where a lot of the activity is focused, and how can you challenge his government saying you are afraid of your government falling because of these other folks that leave if a ceasefire is pushed through. What about the families of the hostages that are so rot with anguish and pain, and when will those be seen the same as the rightwing part of your coalition . Thats where we are at right now. The toll has risen to 49 dead and 219 others injured according to a local ukrainian official. Joining us now, richard engel, who just spoke with President Zelenskyy. Richard, what more do we know . What did the president tell you . So this was a very unique interview. As you said, it was his first interview since ukraine launched the Surprise Operation last month, captured about a 500square Mile Piece of russia. I asked him about todays russian attack, but the larger context of the interview is very important because very little is known about ukraines intentions, about what it plans to do with that section of russia that its still holding and how long it can keep it, and whether keeping it will cost ukraine in other areas along the front lines. I can tell you talking to people here in kyiv, theres a great deal of excitement right now that ukraine was able to break the military deadlock, that President Zelenskyy and his military were able to flip the script instead of losing, as ukraine has been for the last year, and steadily losing territory to russia, now its russia on the back Foot And Russia and Vladimir Putin were caught scrambling as they are losing territory. First, i asked him about the attack. It happened around 9 00 this morning in a city which is in the northeastern ukraine. Its just across the russian border from the area in russia where that ukraine captured mid last month. Its a large city, poltava, and it was a Military Academy that was hit and many of the casualties appear to be cadets, and also a hospital next to the Military Academy was also damaged and according to President Zelenskyy, the issue was the ballistic missiles fired from inside russia, and they quickly crossed the border and hit the Military Facility and the hospital nearby, and people were making their way to shelters when some of them were killed. Its the thing we think about when you say debate, Somebody Standing in for Donald Trump and the Vice President testing out her lines, and she, of course, has not debated since debating former Vice President pence, and Donald Trump, my conversations with his advisers, Free Will Conversations about Strategy And Attack lines, and hes been using his record to try and use the time allotted to him in that traditional Debate Format a bit more effectively, and we are also seeing that effort from both campaigns, and trump says his life is Debate Prep and every interview he does is Debate Prep and doesnt need to spend a lot of time in preparations for next weeks showdown. And you are right where the Harris Campaign is getting off on its Bus Tour. You can see the giant letters on the side of the bus that says Bus Tour, and it officially kicks off, just ten miles away from maralago, and that was not by accident. Its going to move to jacksonville tomorrow. Theres two main things they are trying to accomplish here. Two big reasons. One, they are trying to signal they do believe democrats are back in play in the state of florida, and i will get to that in a moment. Also, remember, Reproductive Rights are on the november ballot, and remember, there was a 15week Abortion Ban and the Supreme Court ruled starting in may that would turn into six weeks, and simultaneously deciding that amendment 4 would be on the ballot. If 60 or more of Voters Vote yes, that will affect viability, and thats a higher threshold than other states we have seen. I asked Senator Klobuchar who is here and headlining the event today, i asked why florida. When you see the battleground states harris is focusing on, florida is not one of them. This is what i heard from klobuchar when i asked why this state for the kickoff. This is what she said. I am ruling out florida at all. It was not that long ago that we had a democratic senator nelson, and we also have rolling interest in the extreme Abortion Ban and the fact that medicare matters to the people in florida. There are many issued in Health Care that will captivate the people in florida. I wouldnt rule it out and i dont think the campaign is because they are starting their tour here. Reporter one of the things i heard from the campaign when asked about why the state of florida, they mentioned that florida is the state that saw the, quote, largest surge of volunteers for the Harris Campaign after she made her announcement, so that was a key part of the decision to have florida as the kickoff here, and clearly the campaign trying to build on the momentum that they feel like they are seeing here despite recent democratic erosion in the state, jose. Garrett, i think you will agree. What presence of Mind And Strength she shows when the Sound Level goes from minimal to maximum, shes able to continue through. Nationally, as we get through the labor day weekend, the polls have harris three points ahead of Donald Trump, and thats an improvement where things were when Joe Biden was the candidate, he was trailing trump pretty much all year. If you are a republican, you can take solace in this, trump being behind by three, not unfamiliar territory for him. Same in 2016, he trailed Hillary Clinton by 5 back then, and then in 2020 he trailed biden at this point by more, and he came closer in the electoral college. You see in gray here the seven Core Battleground states. 6 of the 7 were blue states in 2020. They voted for Joe Biden and democrats are trying to defend them. One, North Carolina was a Red State in 2020 and trump is trying to defend that state. Theres a lot of combinations here. For kamala harris, it involves these three, wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania. Call them the Great Lake states or Big Ten states, call them whatever you want, and if harris wins those three states, and right now with the polling, what is out there, puts her slightly ahead, and slightly i stress, and if she can hold on to them, theres 270 points exactly, and lets say if she were to lose pennsylvania, she would then need to compensate for it by winning two of the states from the sunbelt region, and also if trump were to get pennsylvania, that would open up his simplest path, which would be to get pennsylvania and hold on to North Carolina, as we said he won that in 2020. Georgia was just 12,000 votes, and thats what biden won that by, and if trump won that again, that combination would leave him with 270. Fascinating map. Up next, two u. S. We are excited about the Ballot Initiative in florida, and i believe, jose, we are going to see massive turnout in support of the initiative. My husband and i both were. It was a great time. It was a great party. But the party is over. We take nothing for granted. We look at the polls, and i think i hope we have learned our lesson about completely following polls, but i think Vice President harris is right on point when she says shes the underdog and we still have a lot of work to do and dont take anything for granted. Let me say this, before Vice President harris went to the top of the ticket, protecting womens rights were on top before, and they are still doing that. We are just a week away from the big debate. How important is it for both sides . Thats an interesting question. What does each Campaign Hope to come out of the debate accomplishing . I think in the Harris Campaign, they should have a pretty simple tactic. You have a prosecutor. You have a criminal. A lot about this is just letting a Candidate Play to their strength and making sure whatever their weaknesses are they are not so weak where they lose on that. I would say go onstage and prosecute this man, the first time in the opening statement, for the first time in history you have a criminal standing onstage. I am a prosecutor and i know how to do this, and present your arguments like in front of a jury, and at The End say, Ladies And Gentlemen of the jury, i have proven Donald Trump is unfIt Or qualified to be President Of The United States for this reason. The situation in venezuela is escalating more than a month after the disputed president ial elections there. The u. S. Seizing one of the planes used by regime Leader Maduro and bringing it here to florida.
