The finality of death, we have to understand it, because we have to do something about this in this country, and to do something means an Assault Weapons ban. This weapon fires three times the speed of a nine millimeter, and it caused this incredible damage. I sued the State Of Texas to see the videos that happened, but in uvalde, texas, you dont get a Human Body left when you get shot by one of these weapons. We have to do something now. It is my hothat, the people in this country you go, what an awful day, this tragedy, again, putting the issue of Gun Violence Front And Center in the final stretch of campaigning. Oftentimes, one of these tragedies happens, we talked about it for a few days, the News Cycle moves on, but here we are, less than 70 days from the race, from the election. Do you think this somehow changes the dynamic for the race . Will voters demand action from one or both candidates . Ill knew the extent to which it will change the dynamics of the race, but certainly, at the moment, on the Campaign Trail today, i ought it was very telling, because it was really a Spl Screen in many ways. You know, traveling with the Vice President today to New Hampshire, she delivered those remarks, and she kind of spoke very common sense, i thought, you know, the way she said, it is going to have to be this way. We can add new restrictions on firearms. Meanwhile, the trump Campaigns Response to this was, we dont even want to address it, which is telling, for this campaign, that is usually a sign that they dont want to engage on this sort of policy. I think the reason for that is because that policy is to oppose any new restrictions on Gun Rights. It is to oppose any rollbacks on curbing the proliferation of assaultstyle weapons, which is the kind of weapon that was used today. They didnt want to draw attention to that, because it made their position look weak. When you look at that on a whole, for voters, that is very apparent. You know, which side is for curbing guns, and these sorts of instances, allowing people to perpetrate real murders with these sorts of weapons. But policy is what millions of parents around the country are amending tonight. Parents are too afraid to send their skids kids to School Tomorrow out of fear that another kid could walk in with another ar15 style weapon. What do you think . This is what the issues with the Stt Divies in the party is very, very clear here. The republican party has set for a long time, the answer for Gun Violence is either more guns or, just, theres nothing you can do about it. Democrats try to talk about beauty of Assault Weapons bans and other kinds of Gunn City Legislation And Gun safety measures. It just is so difficult in these moments to have it ever sort of breakthrough. It doesnt have to be difficult. Right . It doesnt. Everything is difficult and so you you say, no, i will do something for the public. Which is quite true along those lines. Talking about this issue, Gun Violence and Gun Safety, we should realy jumon this issue more and push harder on it, because you mentioned talking about young people and how worried they are about this. There are guns like this put on the Back Burner by democrats, and other top issue . They obviolcare about it and talk about it a lot, but it is not the number one thing. These experts told us that they think there are elements where the democraused to be bolder on this issue because of numbers like that, and because of just how focused people in this country are on try to do something about this as you both mentioned on the Campaign Trail now, theres only one candidate actually offering any sort of solutions at the moment. Senator, after the Mass Shooting in uvalde, President Biden did sign the first major Gun Safety legislation that we had in our country in 30 years. That is something. What did you think, reasonably, can be proposed and can get done . You are in texas, where things havent gotten done on a state level, even though it happened in your own backyard yeah. Nothing has happened in the State Of Texas, definitely. I want to point out, looking at the Parkland Shooting in florida, after that horrible act that happened in florida, rick scott, then the governor, passed over 21 pieces of legislation, including Red Flag Laws, including certain age limit requirements on these types of weapons. 75 of republican voters in texas want to see age limits on access to these types of weapons. I, of course, m one of them. So, they need to do what i didnt want to go see, which is dead kids. When you see a little girl with her face just gone, just obliterated in such a horrific way, it changes everything that you believe in in life, and it changes your focus entirely. If policymakers truly want to do the right thing here, they need to understand that s is not just another Mass Shooting, this s he end of Two Little Boys lives, The End of two teachers lives, and all of this is avoidable. Every sheriff in parkland in florida, rather appreciates the fact that they have Red Flag Laws. If we had Red Flag Laws in georgia and i dont know if we do this might have been avoided about a year ago. Yeah. It was parkland students who fought for it. David hardge was a 17yearold high School Student in parkland, florida. Today, he is one of the strongest, most outspoken and safety advocates in this country. So, change can happen. We have to remind yourself, though, Donald Trump, last time we saw his statement on his cial media platform, the last time we had a shooting, the aftermath of a shooting in iowa, i want to share a bit of what Donald Trump said watch this. It is a very terrible thing that happened, and, it is just horrible to see that happening. It is just horrible. So surprising to see it here, but, have to get over it, we have to move forward. We have to move forward. Hugo, no we dont. We dont have to get over it and move forward. We have to do something about it. So, who is that message for . Is that for hardcore nra favored republicans are saying, dont talk about it, look the other direction . Not oking to get over it and s move on. Certainly, No One from those communities, certainly, none of those families. I think that is right you know, the audience, really, is basically red Meat Maga people, and his wider base. For them, they see Gun Rights as something that is inalienable, shouldnt be touched. I think the Trump Campaign runs into this issue over and over again, which is they have policies that are unpopular with large parts of the country, but are very popular with certain sections of their base. If you think about what trump is trying to do in this election, he is actually trying to turn out a Building Block that didnt turn out for him in 2020, but did in 2016, and that is young white men, especially here, young white men who are difficult to reach, probably skew conservative and dont consume mainstream news. To that demographic, the Trump Campaign has long believed most conservative policies and their positions on the second amendment or what is going to get them to gto the poll up for this year, and that has been there singular focus for months, and it explains why trump does what he does when trying to bridge this gap between fundamentally unpopular policies and the very narrow subsection which he thinks will swing the election in his favor. Are they right . Lets talk about young male white voters. They might like to play violent video games, they might be anti , quote unquote, cultural brokenness, but i dont know, theres an awful lot of males who certainly dont want Gun Violence. He is doing it for them . The young male voter. Yeah. , this is the big challenge republicans have with this issue. It kind of feels like were kind of in a Zombie Land when it comes to this, because the nra doesnt have the power it used to have, it has changed the conversation in politics for this issue. I dont know about that, but i do know, like, this a fascinating piece to cover. I have covered so many of the shootings, it is such a horrible part of being a journalist in this era, ing these and being a part of these conversations. Every time, it goes the exact same way, what everybody says, truly, theres something we can do, and then someone says, no, we really cant do anything at all, and the republican party there have been moments as the senator manchin, where some states have made changes and political changes, and those republicans havent been almost losing national support in those states. But when it comes to this issue on the national stage, for some reason, the gop, specifically, seems very, very nervous about getting anywhere away from the idea of guns for anybody who wants them whenever they can get them. That is the best way to solve this problem. Im not convinced that is a great thing for them going forward, but they keep sticking with it. My question is, does this endorsement put any votes on the side of Kamala Harris that might not have been there yesterday . That is a big deal. Look, part of the Big Ten right now for the democratic party are disaffected oldschool republicans. You know, that is the story so far. This is is not a runofthe mill republican. I mean, this was, you know, part of the nobility almost of the republican party a decade or two a, and when you look at suburban areas in Swing States, or even when you look at these contested congressional districts, Theres Plenty of republicans that cannot stand Donald Trump. The danger for the democrats right now is they can just say, we have it in the bag. I think she is talking about, you know, it is true that they have a special place in the republican party. Going back decades, before he was Vice President , it is just so telling that theres not room for a cheney in the republican party. It is extraordinary. So, i think this does resonate with people. I think Liz Cheney is tremendously admired by anyone who believes that there was a free and fair election, which is the majority of the country. She was absolute voice of clarity during these committee heaings, and she is a real conservative. Yes, i think it does help, and she needs to be credited for doing this, because she goes out and campaigns more, and she did some of that in 22 with a real impact. Liz cheney is a name a lot of people were waiting for. They remember her from the January 6th investigation, but that isnt what she was talking about today. She was talking about the threat to the future. Beyond Liz Cheney, is there a Person Or Name in your mind whose endorsement with the huge for Bp Harris, and would make a Opus Unmotivated or Swing Made Voters . Yeah.
