Vice President Harris and Donald Trump Will Pleat in person for the first time. The candidates will face off for a 90 Minute Debate in philadelphia on Tuesday Night. Vise President Harris has been hunkering down preparing in pittsburgh. Just moments ago she took a break from prep and went for a walk with her husband, second Gentleman Doug Emhoff when asked she is ready for the debate she gave a thumbs up. The Harris Campaign has been busy Making Plans post debate. The Vice President and her runningmate, governor Tim Walls will spend four Days Brainstorming to share their message of a quote new way forward. Harris will kickoff the tour with an event in North Carolina on tuesday before heading to pennsylvania on friday. But, first, the focus is squarely on the debate. And the stakes are high. We all remember how the political landscape shifted dramatically in june following the debate between Trump And President biden. Ultimately resulting in Bidens Withdrawal from the race. And, if past is pro log we can expect trump to stray from actual facts. During his debate with biden he made more than 30 false claims. Harris will be ready for whatever is thrown at her. I would also say, mayor, that you are former mayor of New Orleans but maybe you have outgrown that introduction, but thank you for being here, my friend. Thank you. As you know Donald Trump is well known to his supporters. Many ways this debate is a transfer for harris to introduce herself. 28 of voters want to know more about her. So, how does she do this . How does she introduce herself to all of these undecided voters . Thanks for having me. I think you will see an incredible contrast between two people, one that is normal and well prepared. One that is doing an incredible job and thinks about other people. Thinks about himself, power, grievance. That wants to take us backwards, i think she will be clear and she will be strong and she will be powerful. She will remind people who say they dont know who she is. A District Attorney that prosecuted Sex Frauds and prosecuted criminals that she was an attorney damage. That she was a strong senator that talked about protecting womens reproductive rights, that is, Vice President , she has done an incredible job of helping President Biden lead the country through very, very difficult times. I expect her to do well. As you mentioned in your intro. Trump is not somebody that can control himself much less follow the rules on a debate stage. It will be one of the rules like the seven other major debates. Lets talk about trumps kind of volatility here. The Vice President has done a good job of leading her campaign with joy in the middle of all of this division. But as you said, trump might say something derogatory towards her . What should her response to that be . Punch back or stay with the joy . First of all, the theme of her campaign say new way ford. She understands that the american people are sick and tired of the drama that occurred during the trump administration. We woke up every day what the hell did this guy do to america today. People want to turn a new page. Offering a new way forward, a future for everybody that protecting peoples rights and Democracy Versus Trump that is saying he wants to take us back to a dark day when things were not that great. Making it the case. Over and over again. She does that in a joyful way. Not lack of toughness, harris is tough. She is going to speak directly to trump. She will brush him off. In the past. She will not traffic in that. But if he wants to bring a real issue to her she is ready to get after it, she will talk to the american people in a direct way and remind them she is on their side. Most importantly she will demonstrate to the american people that she is tough, she is smart, she is normal, which is amaze that you have to say that, and that she is their fighting for them. It will be clear that Donald Trump is fighting for himself. And i think that is why the team insisted that the microphones be off. They themselves want to shut him up. He debated more times than anybody, he is really good at it. Does not follow the rules so it will be hard. She will do fine and she will be well prepared as she always is. You just mentioned the mics will be off. They wanted them to be on from the Harris Campaign, does this mic thing matter, really . Well, at the end of the day it could potentially matter if trump acts in a way that makes it impossible for anybody on the stage to concentrate what is going on. At the end of the day what matters is the difference between these two individuals and the choice that the american people have to make. It is clear. They can go forward, include everybody, protect peoples rights and go backward with trump and to the worst days that america has ever seen. It will be clear after the debate which is which. That poll that i mentioned earlier. A Neck And Neck race with trump. 48 and harris said, for you to understand that is in the margin of error. Why is this race still so close . Let me just say something. This is the way it has been the last president ial elections, that way from the beginning and it am be that way until the end. The Vice President spoken clearly about this to all of our supporters. Dont take it for granted. We are the under dog, go out, secure the democracy, freedom is not free. The way you fight for it. You vote, you convince your folks to vote. This is going to be very, very close. Up and down. At the end of the day we are prepared and organized for this hand to hand combat, we feel that way about the ability get there. Happen if people get up, get off of the couch and take your friends and family with you. The campaign is launching a new nationwide ad called the new way forward. I want to play a clip from that ad. Focus on The Future, the other focused on the past. When the middle class is strong, america is strong. Lowering the Cost Of Living will be a defining goal of my precedency. Why does the campaign think the new way forward will resinate and move voters . Well, that, that particular ad has a number of different messages, trump wants to take us back to a time that was not good for everybody. It is an old tired trove that he has used time and time again. People are tired of it. Talks about the need to make sure we reduce Peoples Cost and make sure that we reduce the burden that americans have had over the last several years. And the Vice President has a clear plan to do that. I think people are looking for The Future rather than the past. That is what this election is about. The one thing has not changed is a convicted criminal. Trump is found liable for Sexual Abuse and as a judge said Quote Unquote rain. He has been found liable for Business Fraud and it just, really, unseenly to put a guy like that close to the precedency. On top of that, 17 cabinet officials and Dick Cheney said he should be around the oval office, that is a Big Red flag of the people of america and the Vice President will bring the Message Home as well. What are they hoping to achieve in the days before voters start to actually hit the polls . I dont know who is watching. Who has been out and who has not. But it will take almost super human Focus And Discipline to deal with Donald Trump in a debate. No ordinary proposition, the less we are talking about him and the more we are talking about you the better it will be for the Vice President i think he needs to let harris talk. Something she has been reluctant to do unless she is reading a teleprompter. I am looking forward to the good Debate Performance that trump had with President Biden and i think he is up to it. So, mia, what are you expect something. I think harris should do what she does well. That is lean into talking about why the Policy Issues that she has been talking about connect to the everyday lives of Working Families. That is what people want to hear. That is what the poll you mentioned earlier saturday, 28 of people still want to hear more. That is what they want to know. Understand what she will do for their families and she does that incredibly well. I think the advice to President Trump that he just needs to sit back and let her speak i think that would help a lot of voters but i think that will would be incredibly bad advise for him. I happening the idea of trump, this debate is an opportunity for hairis and not at all for trump. I think that is harris and not at all trump, i think that is misguided. They want to hear what he will do. We have not heard that. We heard him, he can play to the Hometown Crowd and talk to people who are with him but the people who will be listening on tuesday are the people who have not made up their minds. And, if you dont have a plan for Working Families you dont plan to help Working Families. And i think he needs to point out what he is actually going to do. None of there rambling through it and getting to the end of it and letting people fill in the blanks. He needs to say what he is going to do. If he can not do that people should hear clearly he does not plan on working on their belafl. Stew earth, i want to ask you what do you think that harris has to do to win the debate. That is a debate that we can say, win the debate on Tuesday Night. I think that is a really important point. Walking off stage alive and it is going to be me. I think what she should do is prosecute trump. That is a strength of hers, she does it comfortably. In part, she is Vice President and probably going to be president because of her ability to question witnesses in hearings. And i think you should play to your strength. Dont just prosecute him as being a criminal. That has done. Prosecute him for being a failed president who attempted to overthrow the government of the united states, dont allow him to appear like a normal candidate. This is not like a Romney Or Barack Obama Race where they will argue about policy. One guy is a threat to the united states and american experiment and you should hold him to that standard. So, mia, trump seems to be, once again, trying to undermind confidence in the election. On Social Media he threatened to jail any of his adversaries who cheat, Quote Unquote, and listen to what he said at his rally yes. We have to stop the Cheating F we stop the cheating, we dont let them cheat i dont have to campaign any more we are going to win by so much. What is he trying to do here . Jailing people for voting, since the beginning, is that what is happening here . That is exactly what is happening. This should be the first question on tuesday, it should be every question that every republican who is still supporting him should be answering. This should be disqualifying for him to say so plainly that he plans on jailing his opponents and extending that to voters, to donors, political operatives he is trying to it is voter suppression. He is trying to scare people from the voting process. It should not be treated as, that is just trump melting down on Social Media again. We have to stop this. He has a different bar. We are so used to him spouting nonsense. That is terrifying, everyone who is talking to him ask talking to anyone supporting him should be leading with how do you feel about that . One other thing on this, you know, harris, taking it on both sides shifting positions on sunday. Shifting positions all of the time, right . Constantly. But, Senator Sanders came to Harriss Defense today on Meet The Press today. Take a look at this. I dont think she is abandoning her ideals. She is trying to do what she thinks is right to win the election. If you campaign on those issues, raising taxes on billionaires she will win and i think she can win big do you think sanders is right here and would that be enough to silence the critics . I think he is exactly right. Look, what we can fund out about candidates is their values. If you hold to your values and you move on issues when you learn something new to me that is the definition of being a leader. What we dont want to see is someone who says one thing to get elected and changes course. Basically what we are seeing with trump. Refusing to let us get pinned down. What we are seeing now is the growth as someone leaves. I dont think that is alarming. People should take that and say i know her values. John, met me start with you. When you see these nbc News Poll numbers what do they tell you . Reporter thanks for having me, charles, the first of things, we need to remember Joe Biden is President Today because of the Youth Vote in 2020. Five states flipped from red to blue, the three blue wall, because young voters voted 60 in favor for biden. He lost everyone over the age of 45 in most of those states. So, the number i am looking at is how close today is the Harris Campaign towards that 60 mark. Among the register voters in the poll, she is at 50 but the tighter the screen when you look at the most likely voters she is creeping up in close to 60 . Devonte, one of the questions the poll asked should there be a maximum age limit for those running for president . 73 said there should be a maximum age limit. What does that is a to you . Thank you for having me. I think that tells people that the younger people and the younger generation want to see younger leadership in office when you are thinking of everybody beyond a certain age representing us in office. The policies that they start to vote on and the issues and the policies that they are putting forward. It does not really represent the youth really at all. And i think that is what that number is starting to show you. We want to see younger leadership representing younger voices. John, the poll found a strong Gender Gap in the harris trump race. Young women favor harris by 30 points while young men favor harris by only 4. How do you explain that . It does not exist before. There was no Gender Gap at all. The Gender Gap is driven by the first time male voters. I am finding in this and our harvard research. I try to understand what an 18, 19, 20yearold young male, his first experience with trump was like. They were in Middle School or so. They thought of Donald Trump in those days as an antihero and not the villain that folks just a little older in their late 20s or early 30s. They dont have the same memory for example the Trump Precedency pulling out of Paris Accords or making excuses for the folks in charlottesville. They have a different experience. And frankly over the last few years there has not been a lot of, you know, democratic leaning content, you know, on line, where they spend a lot of time on youtube, discord, gaming, certainly in podcasts as well. It is something that needs to be are remedied for democrats, i think, if they are going to get the number of up to 60 . That is the magic Number Harris needs to feel comfortable. The Young Women were also in Middle School and saw the same thing that the young men saw. I am trying to figure out what role is Patriarchy Playing here . Are the young men discounting things that the women are not . I think there are two separate media streams that they are engaging with. Younger women have, have seen their rights taken away. The rights that their moms, their sisters, their assents might of taken for granted. I think that is a big part, the democrats even biden was doing well with younger women because of that reason. Younger men, what is interesting, i think, it is more about personality than policy. When i talk to younger men i ask them in Focus Group what their priorities are. Improving or strengthen the middle class. Expanding health care, education, i reblind them those are democratic priorities they just have not heard about. I think there is an opportunity. Alignment on issues works but a disconnection with the party. It is more about the personality of trump and the folks he surrounds himself with. He spent millions over the years communicating with them and it is paying off in some respects. I want to ask you specifically about what you are hearing from African American men about who they plan to support. With a change of our candidates right now. Honestly, i am hearing a lot of support for vp harris. Of course, you still have the 10 that are, of course, going to vote for trump because i think they are not educated on things like oh, we have more money, we have a check and not understanding how congress works. And a lot of black men are starting to realize that abortion is a key issue right now. Abortion is a key issue that not only effects women but it effects not just black men, but men in general and those leaning towards a trump or rightleaning i think you have a small element of sexism and it does not impact meism. I happening the lawsuit tells us a lot about where the state of florida is right now. Not just florida. There are dozens of states around the country that all attempted to remove books that they find to be divisive concepts, usually accurate history about the history of racism in america or in the case of florida, anything dealing with lbgtq folks as if they actually exist any narrative that challenges their narrow understanding of america is what is being challenged right now. And in this particular case this lawsuit, i mean what is fascinating, the state of florida might be saying we are trying to protect the kids from sexual content but some of the books that have been remove friday the shelves in florida have nothing to do with sexual content. Biography of thur good marshal. Truth, 100 woman who made history, that was removed from the shelves. A book called black enough stories, there are booking removed because they challenge the racial normalcy or sexual normalcy. And it has nothing to do with children learning. It is not about protecting children. It is banning books that only a thanful of people in florida, lets be clear, a handful of people responsible for pulling books from the shelves denying everybody the opportunity to learn the truth about this country and the experiences of people beyond just their own experience. That is a fascinating concept to me, tim. Both the limiting and teaching of history but also the what they are building into the word pornographic is it on some level trying to reclassify Queer Identity as itself being pornographic . There is no question. If you look at how they are targeted by this law and those seeking to remove books it is no doubt that queerness is being criminalized but there is an interesting component that the lawsuit does not touch on. I am not blaming the attorneys for Pictures Arguments but it is worth noting a book is written by authors of colors or certained characters. Should we assume authors of color are more sexual . That is ridiculous but race has been sexlized throughout History And Sex has been racialized, right . When you look at a book like beloved are they upset to rain as a sexual issue or are they upset about the fact that rain was so central to the formation of White Supremacy that is part of that novel . I think we know the answer to that. The truth is they are trying to hide behind sexualization as a way to dismiss their narratives. What is the significant of authors joining you have not only all of the big Publishing Offices and several officers, i look adthe lawsuit, a landful handful of people that are suggesting to imply their narratives are pornographic but the understanding of Pornography And Obscenity for years the lawsuit makes it clear. Florida paid no attention to what the courts said. They ignored what the courts have said, they are using vague language. I believe they are going to lose. The vagueness of the lawsuits is intended to intimidate librarians, teachers, to intimidate entire cools, so everyone will say lets just take the books off of the shelves so we dont have to worry about being sued. The fact that these authors joined the suits, the publishers joined the suits i hope, i think, it will make a huge difference. We should be clear, even if the state of florida loses this lawsuit and i believe they will, the ultimate effect is they are trying to intimidate and scare teachers and schools into sense censuring.
