Her advantage is within the margin of error, revealing something historic. Harris favorability, among registered voters, up 16 points since july. That increase in popularity is the biggest for any politician that they have tracked in more than two decades. The News Poll comes after a new Poll Shows growing support for the democratic nominee including one that will have Harris Over Trump in pennsylvania and Plus One in wisconsin. For harris doesnt just have an edge over trump in the polls. She is outperforming the republican nominee in fundraising. They show harris raised 190 million, more than four times what trump pulled in. And her campaign ended with a whopping million dollars in cash on hand. And the highpowered endorsement such as The One she received today from a group of 700 national security leaders. Former secretaries of state and defense, plus more than a dozen retired fourstar generals were among those calling their endorsement of harris, an act of patriotism. With the political winds at her back, it is no wonder why she accepted the Invitation Yesterday to Debate Trump on october 23. Claiming the date was too late. He wont be there for a second round. This afternoon in manhattan, where he hauled in 27 million. The refusal, telling the crowd, my opponent seems to be looking for that excuse to avoid when he should accept. It is a bad excuse. As you mentioned, the historical nature. We havent seen someone with that kind of jump. And to put that into our history. And what will also strike me, harris seems to be winning the change argument. When they asked who better represents change by nine percentage points, voters end up indicating he does rather than Donald Trump. And with some people still grouchy about the Nations Direction and about inflation, that her being able as the sitting Vice President to be the Change Candidate verses Donald Trump who is an Ex President to me is always something very key. The other thing with Donald Trump, he does have advantages when it comes to the economy, the cost of living, that they were all down from when he was on the top of the ticket, so that is very significant. Im glad you brought that up because in the story that accompanies the poll on msnbc. Com, it says some of the erosion has come from republicans who arent Die Hard Supporters of the former president. Talk more about that. Jonathan, this is a caution that will come from the polling team. Our nbc News Poll is conducted by the republican team as well as the democratic team that will come together to help us out. And on the republican side, they ended up saying some of the erosion is coming from these soft Nonmaga Type of republicans who are not as strong with trump as they were a couple months ago. And weve seen this kind of movie before that after some tough times in 2020 or the covid handling in the 2020 election that some republicans drifted away from trump, but then came back home in the very end. Despite all the good news, there is plenty of them that the erosion from trump, that he has that capability from now. And one more thing, mark. One of the questions, have you made up your mind . Will not change vote. 71 might had change vote. How significant is it that 71 of those surveyed said they will not change their mind . Yeah. So jonathan, you know, the number back when we asked this poll a few months ago, that question a few months ago. It was at 26 who said they might change their mind. Now its 11 . Its the nature of getting closer to election day. But the other component is how this is the Change Rate with Kamala Harris at the top of the Ticket Verses Joe Biden. We really did see a squishy middle with a lot of voters saying i cant decide. I want to wait for a bit. All of a sudden with harris at the top of the ticket, not only is the share of that third Party Vote gotten smaller, but we are seeing in our poll fewer people have said hey, i still might change my mind. All right, cornell, your Top Line thoughts of the nbc News Poll . Well, one, i want to say cautionary that polls arent predictors of the future. Theyre instructive, right . We know the Polling Numbers will move around because they are spending millions of dollars moving them around. Again, theyre not predictors of the future, but theyre instructive. When i look at this poll, a couple of things. First, lets take on our republican pollsters and the position on the erosion of trump. Trump is at 44 right now. Yeah, hes eroded. Hes eroded from where he is consistently at, which is roughly around 46 , 47 . So you do have soft republicans that are coming off of him. But what youre seeing with harris gains and these polls, they are not from republicans. Look at how she has gained among the African American voters. Look at how she has gained among the women. But the women, the Gender Gap right now has blossomed, right . If we see this kind of Ginger Gap that looks anything like what we saw in 2020, it is really problematic for republicans. So yes, you do have them pulling back. But where she is gaining, it is not just from the republicans pulling back from them, breaking towards her. You have a lot of groups that are underneath that, breaking to it, the democratic voters who we have talked about before many months ago who were holding back from biden. Other things that i think is interesting about this and it sort of connects to this, but will also connect to how she has gone from a net, which is historic. I have never seen it done in a short period of time. Especially, jonathan, it wasnt like they were spending 20, 30 Million when they were polling. Thats the people rallying around her. With all the staff they were creating, not necessarily her campaign. What youre seeing are voters of color being more enthusiastic and more motivated to vote. Two months from now, it was like a six or Sevenpoint Gap that has been erased in a very short period of time. So what that means in reality that youre going to see the robust turnout. I was really concerned if we would be able to reach anywhere close to what we would see in turnout in 2020. Right now, we will reach 2020 turnout if these numbers will continue. Maybe even surpass the 2020 turnout. You gave me a lot of data there. But you know, just something about how you would raise a good point. Trump is down to 44 when he has been around 46 to 48 , where they say that is the ceiling. I said it because it is. If there is erosion now among republicans, they could go back. But he will still just get to 48 . If im listening to you correctly, the fact that the base voters of the democratic party are enthusiastic in coming home. Can they get to what they will need . Yes because he wins by the subtraction. Look at what you have seen on election day. Even in the Battleground States where he doesnt get to the majority of wisconsin. He will get roughly around 48 to 47 , right . Hell need the third Party Voting to shrink his margin for victory. What they will also show, the third Party Consideration has also shrunk. Where they are consolidating, consolidating, so they need to be able to get above 47 to 48 had nationally in the battleground state, and that is hard for them to do. Thats the dramatic change from july when biden was on top of the democratic ticket and had a 57point advantage. Among latino voters, harris leads trump. And you were here on set with me and im going to start with you. Just the News Poll that will say the support for harris now, its similar to what it was for biden in july. Is that what they are fighting through their own survey . Not at all. We saw her going into the convention where he was on top of the ticket, it was 47, 38. What we saw going into the convention, she was at 60 . 60. Trump was at 29. Rfk was at 7 . What we found so surprising about that poll was that we expected them to come home to the democratic side. We expected that. We didnt expect them to be the trump voters going on to Kamala Harris. We are seeing this as this was 2,000 voters in key Battleground States, so we are talking about North Carolina, pennsylvania, arizona, nevada. That was before the convention bump. Were seeing that shift even more among young voters who are enthusiastic. One of it was them trying to figure out who she was and they liked her back story. Now shes talking about policy. The biggest issue for them for the young voters, black and brown, between 18 to 29 is housing. So it was not a surprise that she came out with that Housing Policy of building affordable housing while giving them 25,000. That came out of research that we have been producing, talking specifically about what they need to hear. And cliff, among African American voters, are you seeing the same spike in support and among latino voters . Yes, definitely. To be clear, we have been saying this would happen for a year now since people first started asking about some of these polls where we were saying look, the closer we would get, the more they become clear about that choice and the more they will start receiving some information about the candidates than biden and harris, that you would start to see these Poll Numbers increase. And that is whats happening. A big part of the increase that were seeing, the energy of the switch, where some of it is just that function as we would get closer from the 70s to 50 days, closer, people are getting more closer. Theyre learning more about the housing policies. More about the Tax Credit policies, right . As these conversations continue, i will expect to see those Poll Numbers for harris, continuing to go in that Direction Weve been seeing for the past 16 weeks. And that is one of the things that they are doing as you would now have a 15 Million program in the Battleground States. Itll span a dozen. Voters are canvassing the operation aimed at increasing black turnout in Swing States and the deep south. Interestingly a Mobilization Effort including the focus on black men. One of the things that has been driving me crazy is this notion that black men, they were going to be going in and voting for Donald Trump. What are you seeing on the ground . And how serious is the potential of erosion . Is there erosion of black male support for the democratic ticket . Right, were not going to see any major shift. I dont think there will be a minor shift and to go in that other direction that trump will get less support from black voters overall and from black men. That there is always a concern whether or not that some demographics of the black voters might decide to stay at home. But again, the more that people will hear about these policies, that it will be one of those things that i dont know what she has done, what the biden, harris, what they have done or what they will do for black men. As we have conversations around what they have done and that economic policy or around policing that they would co sponsor or any of those things that will impact black men as these discussions will continue, as they start to add on. I wouldnt be surprised if they would add them on and uniquely targeted to black men. And these numbers will keep going in the direction that you will keep going. And that in some of these polls, that some of these polls, they have not been done fully after that debate, where they would not beat them, but when you think about that, it will speak to some segments of black men and the way they made them look small and no longer looked like the godfather, making him look like fredo. That would have an impact on the black men like no, you lost some cool points, im not going for you. That is just great. And that is one thing to go out there. It is another thing to get those things that are not registered to register to vote. I will point out for folks very well. You facilitated 36,000 in the six months leading up to july 21. That is the day they would step out of the race. Voter latino has registered 120,000 additional voters. Those are people that are now voting. Talk about that and how significant that spike of registration is. Think about the way we would do our work as the stock market, they went hot. They all wanted in. And the folks that were registering, 70 of them are under the age of 25. 60 of them are women. In my 20 years, i have never seen the enthusiasm among young people who are getting in the ring. In the a place like arizona, there are 163,000 that have turned out. More than ten times. We have personally registered over 13,000 people, already over the margin of the victory. What were trying to tell people, its one thing to listen to the polls, but watch their behavior. The fact theres record volunteers, the fact theyre spending their hard earned cash. The fact that young people are saying i wasnt interested in and now i want to volunteer. It is exciting because people want to be a part of the democracy. This is up their alley where they are not men enough to call out someone of this particular character, someone who is clearly identifying himself to be unfit for office. And let me play meet the Press Today and talking about Mark Robinson being unfit if the allegations are true. The charges are beyond unnerving. If they are truly unfit to serve for office. As long as he will uphold that standard, hell always show you what he was talking before. He will never fall before the country as we would remain in this fight around the nature of the country, all the other issues, noise to the certain extent. Thats why you see them moving just a little bit. What do you think . I agree with that completely. Thats the correct analysis of the moment. Thats not what theyre talking about to the present day thats on going. This is something that has been brewing within our country since the 1930s, certainly before the republican party and within the party at various times to deal with this issue, to repulse this issue, to embrace this issue. Right now were in that period where we are embracing. I think that will say a lot of why j. D. Vance who is pretty much whatever you want me to be today, ill be because ill Know Something else. Hes a Black Man who is playing that white game in this space. Thats the other thing that means a lot. You dont hear them condemning it because it will work with that narrative. Could harris take florida in North Carolina . The data suggests she can. If harris support will continue to consolidate, then she will stand up with a very strong chance of winning both states. They have brought back into play, not just the 2020 states, but also the 2012 states. The level of Excitement And Energy among voters of color now will make nearly all the states won by obama, nearly winnable for newly winnable by democrats. Come on, steve. 100 . Thats what we were talking about before, right . That they are fundamentally divided. Fortunately thats divided, but its a very large majority who would be in that country. That will play themselves out behind the country where they won by obama in 2008 and 2012. Thats The One they were talking about. The new registrations and participating. The problem is a drop of enthusiasm and a drop in turnout. But we havent had that, which enabled them to win. Its bringing the entire coalition into play, which is bigger now than in 2012. One other thing that you pointed out is that her share of the white support is better now than Obamas Exit polls in those states in 2008 and 2012 . Yes. So her current polling is better than what obama got when he won. Thats what you guys were talking about too that there is some small percentage of the republicans. This is just too much for them. You are seeing that this erosion, which is meaningful is closely contested as North Carolina and florida. Before we go to break, what do you make of Steves Argument . I agree with his argument. In fact when Joe Biden handed this opportunity to the Vice President when the shift occurred, i was on the air saying at the end of the day, this selection for the democrats could be bigger than obama. That what Kamala Harris had the potential to do then, which is now being born out and certainly reflected with what they just said, they could create a different coalition. One thats more than just the combination of obama and biden, meaning in 08 and 20. And what has happened on terms of issues is dobbs, where what that does, it draws in those voters that would be aligned, falling away because of the heavy handed nature, which they want to control womens bodies. And that does not sit well either. So this coalition thats being created by Kamala Harris and Tim Walz is not just one to watch, but it will be one that they will study when she takes that to victory. They will fall. Joining me now is Wright Thompson, author of the barn, the secret history of a murder in mississippi, which hits bookstores on tuesday. Wright, its great to see you again. Thank you for coming to the show. Thank you so much. Hiding In Plain Sight. And talk about why it moved you to write this book . You know, we think of the Emmett Till murders as one of the famous murders up there. When you start researching it though, you are sort of stunned by how much isnt known still, but how much has been erased. And so the fact that the barn was sitting there hiding In Plain Sight. It felt to me in their way that not only did the secrets of this murder, you know, the history of the whole country frankly. And that jumped out at me because we met when i went down to mississippi that would lead to the national monument. But there i was in what i thought was a Grocery Store where they said no, its over there and it was overgrown with trees and weeds and thing bs. Hiding In Plain Sight is the way things seem to be done down there. Well, you know, you have the barn thats hiding In Plain Sight. You have that store. Much of the history that we know about this comes from a journalist that was written by the murders, and it is still quoted when they went down there. It was pulled from the fake account. And so that is one of the things that i found in the four years that i spent researching the past is this is all still very present. It feels to me that the Battle For The Soul Of Mississippi and the south in america if Malcolm X said everywhere south of canada is the south, you know, its between the forces of memory and this book is a chronicle of that fight. And this isnt just removal, but this is you. You are from this area. My Family Barn is23 miles from the born. So what i grew up distinctively, even if people lie, the ground tells the truth. So you know, one of the main threads of this book is a1,300 Year History of the land around the barn. Excavating, yo anoa, frankly centuries of blood in the dirt. And how much resistance did you receive to this while you were writing the book . I guess we will see on tuesday. Thats right because the book will come out on tuesday. Here it is, right here.
