Good morning, it is Saturday September the 28th. I am Ali Velshi. Hezbollah has confirmed that Israel Has kept the groups longtime leader in strikes late last night on an Apartment Complex In Beirut. Which is the capital of lebanon. Israel says hezbollah was using the complex as a headquarters this represents a major escalation of ongoing Back And Forth between Israel And Hezbollah. Israel has intensified in last couple of weeks. Israel also says the strikes killed a Highranking Commander and other senior leaders of the organization. Israel says other strikes in Beirut Yesterday targeted weapon caches. Nasrallah is a cleric and led it has blossoms 1992. He has grown the group into the most powerful iranian backed force in the region. Both militarily and politically, building has been a lot into what has been called a state within a state. He led the group for decadal conflict and is made in a Civil War on behalf of the regime. They have help train other i running back regional militias including hamas and the houthis. In a statement the head of iran supreme national Security Council said that it axis of resistance will, quote, respond with force at the right time and that Israel Has, quote, Open The Gates against itself. This Morning Israel carried out more strikes in Lebanon And Hezbollah fired more rockets into israel. Joining me now from beirut is international correspondent matt bradley, who has been following this Story And Hezbollah for a long time. Give me a sense of what is going on where you are and what is likely to happen as a result of these attacks. Reporter we do not know what will happen but as i told you earlier, i have been hearing gunshots behind me and actually further Explosion Right in this neighborhood. Which is exactly where we saw yesterday at the huge, not one explosion but multiple explosions. A succession of what some might Bunker Buster bombs which were underground and struck, not just this area but several senior leaders. Now we have also been hearing, like i said, gunshots, successive rounds of firing. That could either be out of morning, most likely because coming from the neighborhood and mostly residential area where hezbollah had its headquarters. A lot of people were living. It could also be celebratory. This is a country that was not necessarily in my love with hezbollah. Even though they probably were a lot of people will be pleased to see hezbollah loosen its grip on the nations politics. You had mentioned a moment ago that, you know, this was a state within a state. It could be more like a state within a failed state. Now we are hearing the Casualty Number has increased to hundreds and hundreds more. This Recovery Effort could go on for quite a while. We will stay close to over the course of next few hours. Matt bradley In Beirut. Turning back to u. S. Election, 38 days away. Kamala harris is going on the offensive in an effort to close the gap between herself and Donald Trump especially in the key Swing States along the sunbelt. The democratic nominee has spent the last week trying to make and roads on what voters have set are two of the top issues this election cycle, the economy and immigration. Earlier in the week both candidates held events and gave speeches focused on the economic vision for the country with harris getting to flush out her policies while trump continue to blame her and the biden administration for the high cost of goods. Yesterday, harris shifted the conversation to the topic of immigration as she visited the southern border for the first time since becoming the democratic president ial nominee. Harris travel to a portion of the border located in douglas, arizona. She met with Border Patrol agents and gave a speech detailing her plans while criticizing trump for intervening in and ultimately tanking a bipartisan Board Reform Bill in congress earlier this year. It was the strongest Border Security Bill we have seen in decades. It was endorsed by the Border Patrol union. And it should be in effect today. Donald trump tanked it. He picked up the phone and called some friends in congress and said, stop the bill. You see, he prefers to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem. Trump was hyperaware of Harris Visit to the Border Yesterday before the democratic nominee even left on her trip to arizona. The former president was offering about his handling of the countrys immigration dilemma. Since then he sent out more than a dozen posts on Social Media related to, harris and the border. Most polls continue to show that voters think the former president has an edge over his democratic opponent on this issue. Latest national poll shows that 54 of registered voters that trump would do a better job securing the border compared to 34 who think harris would be a better leader on that issue. That is actually an improvement from joe bidens number from the last time nbc asked the question in january of this year when only 22 said they thought biden would handle immigration better compared to 57 who chose trump. Harris campaign is looking to undercut trumps advantage on the issue calling attention to her past work prosecuting international gangs and Organized Crime during her tenure as Attorney General of california. Trump continues to use inflammatory rhetoric about immigrants. He is continuing to single out the migrant population in specific cities and blaming them for rising crime, which has resulted in some pushback from within his own party after trump reviewed unfounded and unflattering stories about arm immigrants taking over the city of aurora, colorado. The republican mayor said he hoped the former president would visit his city so he could quote show him that the narrative is not accurate by any stretch of the imagination. If the story sounds a millionaire it is because it is out of the same Playbook Trump has been using from the moment he entered the national political scene. Donald trumps politics of grievance are a central component of the maga movement. He links immigrants, democrats and others to the economic pain and other problems that his supporters are experiencing. He reinforces their worldview that they have been left behind and shut out of the political conversation by these specific identifiable groupof it has been incredibly effective. It has been key to trump staying in power, which is why he rehashes the narrative time and time again especially when he is forced to go on the defensive. Joining me now, jason stanley, professor of philosophy at Yale University and author of books. Also with us Staff Writer for the atlantic and a msnbc contributor, author of the Book Romney a reckoning, which is now out in paperback. Thank you for being with us. Mckay, good to see you as well. Let us talk about this. Donald trump, this is working for him. It is dangerous rhetoric. It is hateful at a level that we are unused to have been accustomed Donald Trump for last eight years. What you think is going on . Back to Platos Republic. Tyrant so fear and promise that they represent themselves as the nations protector. This is a playbook that is as old as democracy itself trump is trying to distract attention from the wealthy corporate elites whose taxes he is promising to cut and blame, instead, the inequality we are seeing in the united dates on those who also suffer from that inequality. It is straightforwardly incoherent. Immigrants are supposedly these criminals, who are coming here to do criminal enterprises and are lazy in taking money. Somehow, they get it together to vote in elections. That is part of the interesting thing because this is playing into the big by 2. 0. He said it in the debate. They come to this country and do not speak the language. They sometimes do not know what country they are in. Somehow, they vote illegally in elections. And perhaps you will hear about this after november 5th. That is why he lost the election if he does not get as many votes of Kamala Harris does. There is no question. I think it is important to note that anyone who spent time with immigrants, documented or undocumented, knows that they are just good hardworking people trying to make a living for themselves and their families. Turning them into this kind of criminal conspiracy that not only is it making your life worse, which the Argument Trump is making but also endangers our Country And Republic by trying to steal the election, is going to be central to Donald Trumps narrative. It was central to his narrative coming out of the 2020 defeat. I am sure we will hear it again. I want to make one quick point. I cannot take you back to Platos Republic as jason did but i will take you back to 2016. Donald trumps very first speech when he announced his president ial campaign, 2015, was framed around this idea that mexico was sending Drug Dealers and criminals to our country and that he was going to put a stop to it if there is one single thesis to Donald Trumps entire political career over the past decade, this is it. It is fearmongering about immigrants. In some ways, i am surprised that what was supposed to be a more professional discipline campaign, we heard that from republicans over and over. They are focusing on this in the final weeks of the election, voting this obviously false conspiracy theories. On the other hand, there is a logic to it. The Closing Arguments in the campaign, it makes sense that it is framed once again around Fear Mongering around immigrants. This is been a single thing that he talks about most of the last decade. It is interesting because i think some of what he does is that the average person would not know where he gets it from her what truth, if there is one. When he talked about haitian immigrants in springfield, ohio, most people have not been there and do not know what the story is. There are haitian immigrants there but theyre not doing what he said they are doing it causes reporters and others to dig in and tell you where the light came from it and then he talks about gangs shooting up aurora, colorado. You have amir come out and say that is not happening. It gets everyone chasing their tails to find out what the real story is. At no point to further the discussion. We have to understand the republican party is entirely based on completely fictional voter fraud. Voter fraud is almost unheard of in the united states. Top to bottom, the republicans are claiming it is one of our central problems if not our central problem. How do you deal with the fact that one political party is essentially running on a lie that is no more plausible than the claim that the number one problem in the nations magical pink bunny rabbit, who are going to eat your children. How do you run against that . The media is complicit because theyre representing this as a Horse Race. In a Horse Race in a democracy, truth is important. You do have to look at who is saying what and compare them. If you treat this as a Horse Race and one party is saying, magical pink Bunny Rabbits are threatening your children, then you are just going to you have to call that what it is. You have a book about Mitt Romney at a very interesting time in history and the politics of this country. Which always makes me wonder what your take is, if Donald Trump loses. We have people on the show who are republicans, former republicans and they all have different views about what should happen to the republican party. Does it burn to the ground and a phoenix rises Out Of The Ashes or are there mainstream republicans, like Mitt Romney or Liz Cheney or others, who can usher this party back to some degree of normalcy . This is a conversation that i have had with Mitt Romney many times. He goes Back And Forth on this as i think a lot of republicans like him do. On the one hand, i think that if Donald Trump were to lose this election and finally go quietly into that good night or loudly, as the case may be, you know, i think that some of the toxic elements of trumpism would go with him. Specifically the Personality Cold Stuff the republican rush to defend every outrageous thing that he says and does some of that would fade away with him. The republican party is ideological transformed during the trump era. It has become more nationalistic , more isolationist in foreign policy, more nativist. I do wonder if that ideological transformation, which frankly maps on what is to happening to Consumer Parties across the Western World will change. People like Mitt Romney, you know, wish it would go back to the reagan era of republican party. I am not sure that will happen. I would also just note because this relates to the conversation we have had, for there to be a real Potty Party wide reckoning would require the majority of voters and political leaders to acknowledge they lost the election in 2024, if that is what happens. I dont have any confidence that that is going to be the case. If republicans lose i think you see a lot more conspiracy rising and big Lie Stuff going around in the conservative media i think that will prevent any real grappling with what the party has become and how it needs to reinvent itself to be successful in the future. Thank you so much. Dr. Jason stanley is a professor of history at Yale University and author of a Racing History have ashes rewrite the past to control the future. Hezbollah has confirmed that Israel Has killed the groups longtime leader, nasrallah, and strikes last night at an Apartment Complex In Beirut, the capital of lebanon. Israel says hezbollah was using it as a grounder underground headquarters. Hezbollah fire more rockets into israel. To me now from beirut is nbc News Internet Scores Bennett matt bradley. He has been with us all morning at various times. Through the day, you have had to don your Protective Gear to try to figure out whether you are hearing celebratory Gunfire Or Something else that is developing and that is the complicated place that Beirut And Lebanon is. It is not clear what is happening. Reporter there is a lot of love for Hassan Nasrallah and a lot of hate too. This is a divided country. The neighborhood behind me from where we were hearing the gunfire is the place, of course, where Hassan Nasrallah was killed in the sight of repeated attacks over the past week. And really over the past week. A lot of the strikes for the past year when has been lawfully entered to the fight in solidarity, that is moakley mostly focused this is the headquarters of hezbollah. It is a residential neighborhood. When we saw the buildings that were collapsed, we heard there is only a handful of people who are killed. Those numbers are certain to go up. We just saw the enormous impact of successive bombs and it looked as though about of these were deeply penetrating so called Bunker Buster bombs, meant to strike a senior meeting of hezbollah officials on their need these residential towers. We can probably expect that the Casualty Numbers will increase. The political implication has not yet been fully felt. We do not know exactly which Direction Hezbollah will go with now they have come from the death of their venerated leader. A man who was so much larger than life both here in lebanon and throughout The Middle East and throughout the world. He symbolized for so many of the leading voice, the sharp edge of the resistance against israel and for people either further and places like latin america, he was seen as a leader and an anticolonial effort that a lot of people, who opposed israel, seem to see that as symbolizing a colonial entity. That is the reason why this will have such a farreaching effect. One of the reasons why we see a political Succession Issue with in the higher ranks of hezbollah. We have already seen so many of the leadership having been killed over the past week. Im asking you an unanswerable question. As it relates to the backand forth between Israel And Hezbollah, does this escalate . Or has it hit so hard that hezbollah will need to positive value was going for two reporter i do not know. I hate to speculate because i tend to be wrong, especially in this part of the world. Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate. Iran has said , as you mentioned earlier, Israel Has opened the gates. Iran was the main benefactor of hezbollah. This is an organization while it may be engaging and that is a different what we have seen the past. It Hassan Nasrallah was the propagandist and chief. He would hold forth with hours long species deriding the israelis. And extolling the benefits of the resistance as he called Ali Velshi team is on the other iran back groups throughout the region but without their leader, without their leadership, it is unclear what they are going to do. It is all the Missile Silos that have been struck throughout the past week. We do not know whether they will need to lick their wounds or strike back as hard as i can. Matt, thanks as always. We will stay close to you. Matt bradley In Beirut for us. Our show has been trying the devastating aftermath of the supreme courts dobbs decision which overturned the constitutional right to an abortion. We brought you story after story of a woman who suffered and even die preventable deaths because Abortion Is Healthcare and the healthcare was delayed or denied under Taccone And Post Roe Antiabortion regimes in america. We have talked to and about women, who have been denied care during lifethreatening miscarriages and Postpartum Care after delivering helping babies because of abortion ban. It is just as important we talk about the majority of women who seek an abortion in this country. Those facing unintended pregnancies. For them, abortion is also healthcare. The alternative to women in consultation with their families and doctors being able to choose an abortion is forced birth, which is literally a Human Rights violation, according to Amnesty International and the united nations. The dissenting judges and dobbs warned about the impact of criminalizing abortion. They described Overturning Roe as depriving women of the ability to produce but equally in this nations economic and social life. They warned that women would incur the cost of losing control of their lives. My next guest, sarah harrison, understands this firsthand. She had two abortions a decade apart and she writes in the nordic times that, quote, both of my abortions were necessary, only one gets sympathy. I had my first abortion one day after i turned 28. I was a single mom to a 5year old daughter. We live in a onebedroom basement apartment. I was recent Law School Graduate and setting for the bar exam, living off the loan and small scholarship. I knew i could not raise another child while being the mother i want to be for my daughter while pursuing the career i wanted in public service. It is the kind of story people tend to judge rather than champion my second abortion was this past november. This time i was married and happily and intentionally pregnant. The only surprise was that it was twins. Now 37 years old, i have routine Prenatal Testing which revealed that Fetus B had trisomy 18, a fatal anomaly. I knew that continuing this unviable pregnancy of Fetus B wouldve put Fetus A emmy at a high risk of serious complications, weekly miscarriage, Stillbirth And Preterm birth. My husband and i were heartbroken. We knew there was only one way to protect Fetus A and myself but we live in texas. And because of the abortion ban, had to travel to colorado for abortion care. My two abortions were a decade apart and different in many ways but my choice to have them his on the same desire to exercise their freedom to determine my future. Both allowed me to care for my children, protect my health and pursue my career in the way i determined was best. Joining me now is the author of the powerful piece, sarah elaine henderson. She is an attorney based in texas. Thank you for joining us this morning. Thank you for having me. You point out the lack of empathy for women who seek abortions outside of those who need them for medical emergencies. Talk to me about the misconceptions, having had two abortions under different circumstances about people who obtain what we call elective abortions. Abortions of their own choosing. I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that women do this in a carefree or cavalier way while the decision to have an abortion, in reality, can be quite difficult. It was for me in both situations. We need to remember we have to trust women and understand that they know what is best for them. And they do not have to justify why they are having an abortion. They know what they need. That is why i encourage all of us to destigmatize abortion care. It is not a question for the rest of the world to judge. It is up to a woman to decide what is right for her. It is a question that people judge in the abstract but you are not the abstract but you have written about your specific choices that you made when you were 28. Do you think your Life And Career wouldve taken a different path if you were not free to make that decision i knew at the time my life would have been fundamentally altered in a way that i was not ready for. As you just read, i was a single mother of a 5yearold. I was trying to pursue my career in public service. I would not have been able to do that and care for another child. I think instead of walking through what if for individual cases like Mine Or Anyone elses, we should always focus on trusting that women know what is best for them. It does not make sense for us to , you know, assess what their life would have been like. It is up to women to decide what is right for them. There are plenty of studies. We can just look at data. There is plenty of studies that show the detrimental outcomes to women when there is not access to abortion care, like the studies we are seeing across the country about Infant Mortality or maternal Mortality Or Force travel. And that all the stories of women who are not able to travel, that we are not hearing about. Who are eager going through a forced pregnancy or managing abortions on their own. We have that data and we know what the impacts are of Abortion Bans or hostile laws, laws that are hostile to abortion care. That is what we should work from and make our policies and build our policies and laws off of. It is interesting in both cases, you write about the decision that you made for yourself and to protect your family. Much of the Rhetoric Driving Antiabortion Movement is about protecting The American family. Im sitting here next to like trusty copy of project 2025 and it is based around protecting The American family. Some interesting rhetoric given both of your abortions were made with that in mind. You can start with the extreme you can start with my case, where i had to leave my state to seek medical care to protect another fetus. There was no exception in Texas Law to protect a healthy fetus, when another fetus was not compatible with life. From there, it is a spectrum. Conservatives take such an extreme position on the issue that it is hard for anyone to take them seriously that they support families. As you just said, my decision to have an abortion, in both cases, was to support my family. It was a familybased system. Abortion is a Family Values issue. That is how i think democrats are framing it as they continue support reinstating roe. I think that is right. I do agree that it is not protection of Family Values to deny women the right to the Health Care that they need. Thank you for joining us and thank you for telling your story. Sarah Elaine Harrison is an attorney based in texas. Coming up, more efforts to demystify the sprawling conservative plan for america known as project 2025. We will open up to Chapter 9, we find conservative plans to export Culture Wars to the shores of vulnerable for nations. A safe, one time implant that reduces Stroke Risk and bleeding worry, for life. Watchman. Its one time, for a lifetime. Innovation in Health Care means nothing if no one can afford it. At evernorth, were helping to unlock barriers. Using our 35 plus years of pharmacy Benefits Management Experience to save businesses billions while boosting medication adherence. Helping Plan Sponsors and their members be at their best. Thats wonder made possible. Evernorth health services. Today we are going inside Chapter 9 of project 2025 on the united States Agency for international development. U. S. Aid. They currently distribute 8 to 153 countries in the form of humanitarian assistance, Health Infrastructure and economic development. Project 2025 cs Usaid Status as one of the worlds biggest humanitarian organizations and they see as an opportune export right Wing Culture wars, obsessions to the world. We will say what we mean to abortion. On page 200 260 calls for reusing the protecting life in global Health Assistance Policy it is known as the Mexico City Policy. This is an old policy that blocks u. S. Federal funding for organizations that perform or promote abortion as a method of Family Planning in foreign countries. First introduced by ronald reagan. At the Mexico City Policys goal was to stop abortion, it did not work. Countries in subsaharan africa that were affected by the Mexico City Policy increased abortion rates according to this 2019 study featured in the mobile health journal. On page 265 project 2025 asserts, quote, the continued high rate of maternal and Infant Mortality is a persistent global tragedy. Contrary to current publicity this problem is not solved by abortion. But is actually contrary to reality. Decrease axis to abortion means increased maternal mortality rate. We are seeing that here in the united states as the fall of roe. According to the World Health Organization nearly half of all abortions conducted worldwide are considered unsafe. According to the guttmacher institute, 11 of all maternal mortality comes from these unsafe abortions. It is like we have been saying, Abortion Is Healthcare. In america and Around The World. Restricting abortion means restricting womens healthcare. Project 2025 also wants the president to be able to dictate Abortion Policy worldwide. On page 261, it writes, current law in the foreign Assistance Act gives the president Broad Authority to set such terms and conditions as he may determine on foreign assistance, which legally empowers the next conservative president to expand this prolife policy. The goal here is to hold the rights of women worldwide hostage with a carrot of u. S. Aid in exchange. The chapters were unwilling continues. Two 159 suggest, quote, Usa Aid should remove all references and examples on websites and agency publications and policies and in all Agency Contracts and grants that included the following terms. Gender, gender equality, gender equity, gender diverse individuals, gender aware, gender sensitive, et cetera. It should also remove all references to abortion, Reproductive Health and sexual and reproductive rights and controversial sexual education materials. This head in the Sand Approach to those Big Scary woke words might be in line with the right wings domestic policies but fighting the Culture War on the global stage would be an incredible disservice to women everywhere. Office of population and Reproductive Health, one of those words they want to ban helps right child marriage. It supports programs aiming to end female mutilation and genderbased violence. Project 2025 is so immersed in this right Wing Culture war that it abandons reasoning. On Climate Change, page 257, the eighth industry claims that Climate Change causes poverty, which is false, and during conflict and back and then the call the economic policies are the main driver. Reality might disagree. The impacts of Climate Change, like increased frequency of extreme weather, more droughts could push more than 100 Million people into poverty by 2030, according to a report from the world bank. Not keep 100 Million people in poverty, push 100 Million or more people into poverty. 257 is chockfull of ideas but it suggests that the next conservative administration should resend all climate policies from its foreign aid programs Pacifically Usaid Climate Strategy 2022 to 2030. Shut down the directives designed to advance the Paris Climate Agreement and narrowly limit funding to traditional climate mitigation efforts. The agency should cease collaborating with and funding progressive foundations, corporations, institutions and ngos that advocate on behalf of climate fanaticism. Climate fanaticism. That would be a Death Blow to the fight against Climate Change. It is full of goal to reduce emissions, at Risk Ecosystems and develop Renewable Energy Systems globally. Cutting this money would hurt the folks already disproportionally feeling the impact of Climate Change. The 74 lowest income nations only contribute 1 10 of global omissions but stand to be affected the most by Climate Change. Women as Breeding Stock and the world as a dumping ground. That is the Development Courtesy of project 2025. Coming up, with more on the attack on foreign aid we have jeremy, president of Refugees International and former usaid covid19 Lead Official. Joining me now is jeremy, the president of refugee international and former usaid Lead Official for covid19. Thank you for being with us. This is where project 2025 is full of nuggets that are not obvious because people do not think about these things. It is really important how we look at the influence of the united states over the world and its policies through our resources and money, it can be very scary. This book writes it all down and tells the ways in which we are going to affect the way the world thinks about a lot of these issues. What is dragon when you read the chapter on usaid , in how completely ensconce it is about climate were rhetoric. That phrase jumped out at me. There is a lot of, frankly, right Wing Gender Radicalism in there. When they talk about all gender programming, all language around gender, what that means is women in developing countries being unable to manage reproduction. It means that the end of it genderbased violence programs that protect women and girls from Sexual Abuse and exploitation, advance womens rights and ability to work. This is not trivial stuff. The kind of Soul Focus on abortion over everything else takes a lot of Collateral Damage with it. I think most americans might think that we are trying to promote democracy, fairness, equality and liberty. Things like that that are written in the constitution Around The World. Maybe people think we are benign about this. People would be surprised to understand the agenda is to reverse that. You look at countries have Human Rights abuses, gender abuses, Gender Mutilation and antilgbtq stuff, it is key to understanding that is going to get worse under project 2025. I would even goes far to say project 2025 would ally the u. S. Government with some of the things that are reversing fundamental Human Rights worldwide, reversing womens rights and Lgbtq Plus rights. There is this exporting of u. S. Culture wars to other settings, where frankly, these are not the biggest things people are focusing on. I emphasize what comes with that are just really fundamental damages to Peoples Ability to protect their own health and life. Can you contextualize what it means to halt aid to organizations that, quote, promote abortion or, quote, climate fanaticism. International organizations view Abortion Selfcare and they recognize Climate Change as a crisis. What does that mean . If these things are in your charter, you lose potential aid from the united states to further your work . They even go so far as to talk about debarring, meeting making ineligible for any u. S. Funding, organizations that engage in those activities are have robust dei programs. They are really bringing the u. S. Deeply Out Of Step with where the mainstream of the world is. I came back in on the day one team with the biden administration to usaid. What we found was as staff that was shellshocked and traumatized and had been put in this position of bringing the u. S. Out of step with countries that we normally work with on developing cooperation, who are telling us they want these programs. It is not random that the World Health Organization prioritizes Gender Considerations in healthcare. We know that is a crucial factor in providing effective healthcare. For usaid to be Out Of Step with that, i do not think it changes the rest of the world because the rest of the world, frankly, knows the way to do these things. It puts the u. S. Out of step and makes us the marginal and radical player. And it does encourage those countries and nations and those organizations that are trying to advance some of these things in making the world a less safe place for the most vulnerable and those of us who are affected. Thank you for joining us. Jeremy is the president of Refugees International and a veteran of usaid.
