Military capability and the u. S. Military. Its also a testament to the tensive planning between the united states and israel to anticipate and defend against the attack we expected. Make no mistake the united states is fully, fully supportive of israel. That was president Joe Biden addressing a major escalation in the Middle East, irans ballistic Missile Attack on israel. Well bring you the very latest on that developing story in just a moment. And well go through the big moments of last Nights Vice President ial debate, which could be the final matchup between the campaigns before Election Day. And well Haven Update on recovery efforts across the southeast as President Biden prepares to get a firsthand Look Today at some of the devastation. Good Morning And Welcome to Way Too Early on this wednesday, october 2nd. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day with us, and we have an extraordinarily busy show for you this morning. And well begin with the latest developments out of the Middle East where iran has launched a ballistic Missile Attack against israel. Yesterday iran fired about 180 missiles into israeli territory, forcing millions of people, millions of people to take cover in bomb shelters. But with the help of u. S. Forces, most of the missiles were intercepted, and no deaths were reported in israel. One civilian, however, did die in the west bank. A small town in central israel was also hit, damaging a school building. Thankfully, No One was injured in that attack. Iran claims it targeted three Military Bases including an Air Base in the desert. The idf says that attack had no impact on the air forces operational capabilities. Iran says the strikes were in response to the killings of two militant Group Leaders and an iranian commander. Israel has taken responsibility for the death of hezbollahs Hassan Nasrallah but has not yet commented publicly on a July Attack that killed the head of hamas political wing in tehran. Now, israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is vowing to retaliate, saying iran made a, quote, Big Mistake and will pay for it. Iranian officials are warning against any retaliation, saying that tehran will hit israels entire infrastructure if it takes anymore action. The White House, however, is in support of severe consequences for tehran. Obviously this is a significant escalation by iran, a significant event. And it is equally significant that we were able to step up with with israel and create a situation in which No One was killed in this attack in israel, so far as we know at this time. We are now going to look at what the appropriate next steps are to secure first and foremost american interest and then to promote stunt to the maximum extent possible as we go forward. Joining us now, former fbi Special Agent and national Security Analyst for Nbc News and msnbc, clint watts. Clint, good morning. Thank you for starting us off today. A twoparter for you. First, in april, The Last Time iran struck at israel, there was a sort of a sense, though, the attack was big in number. It was pretty telegraphed and somewhat symbolic and face saving. The first question to you is what is your assessment this time . What did iran intend to do . And a second parter, what do you think Irans Response will be . Yeah, jonathan, this mirrors what we saw in april from iran, which was a large barrage of missiles heading towards israel. But, again, there was no impact of this. But what those those Missile Strikes attempted Missile Strikes do for iran is it provides something that, one, iran can show its own domestic audience theyre doing in the face of withering attacks by israel and hezbollah. And, two, it tries to shore up some of the support for its alliances with the houthis in yemen, which were struck over the weekend by israel. Hezbollah inside lebanon, and hamas inside gaza. That was three parts if iran were to call on them, but that has not happened. I think the second question, jonathan, about what israel will do, it may again be a limited attack. Because if weve seen anything over the last two weeks its that israel is very focused on hezbollah. This is starting with dedecapitating Communication Networks of the leadership with pagers and walkietalkies exploding to targeted Air Strikes on the most advanced units to hezbollah to now the Ground Incursion which started yesterday. What we saw in april is israel took out an Air Defense System that was maybe a gateway to the nuclear facility. So the question would be maybe the less aggressive end would they do something similar and a small strike in retaliation, or will they do Something Injury aggressive like going after the nuclear Refining Capability of iran . Yeah, certainly the White House watching and so is the rest of the region. Nbc news national Security Analyst, clint watts, thank you. Well talk to you later on Morning Joe, and of course well have more coverage about the Middle East later in this show as well. Now we switch to domostic politics, and Vice President ial nominees tim Walz And J. D. Vance took to the Debate Stage Last Night. The Minnesota Governor and ohio senator largely kept things cordial focusing their attacks not at each other but at their running mates, the two at the top of the ticket. Walz and vance did clash on everything from the immigration to the economy and foreign policy. But one of the sharpest exchanges came right at The End of the night when Senator Vance refused to concede that former President Trump lost the 2020 election and then sidestepped the question about certifying this years results. Would you, again, seek to challenge this Years Election results even if every governor certifies the results . Ill give you 2 minutes. Laura, first of all, i think were focused on the future. We need to figure out how to solve the Inflation Crisis caused by Kamala Harriss policies, make housing affordable. I want to focus on your question because you did ask it. What President Trump said there are problems in 2020 and my belief we should fight about those issues, debate those issues peacefully in the public scare, and thats all ive said, and thats all Donald Trump has said. Its really rich for democratic leaders to say that Donald Trump is a unique threat to democracy when he peacefully gave over power on January 20th as we have done for 250 years in this country. This was a threat to our democracy in a way we had not seen, and it manifested itself because of Donald Trumps inability to say he is still saying he didnt lose the election. Did he lose the 2020 election . Tim, im focused on the future. Did Kamala Harris Censor Americans from speaking their mind in the wake of the 2020 covid situation . That is Damning Nonanswer. A Damning Nonanswer there. Both candidates were also asked about the issue of abortion Last Night. Vance repeatedly suggested the gop is losing the rhetorical battle on the issue, while walz argued folks needed to mind their own business. And i think what i take from that as a republican who proudly wants to protect innocent life in this country, who proudly wants to protect the vulnerable, is that my party, weve got to do so much better of a job at earning the american peoples trust back on this issue where they, frankly, just dont trust us. And i think thats one of the things Donald Trump and i are incurving to do. I want us as a republican party to be profamily in the fullest sense of the word. I want us to support fertility treatments. I want it to make it easier for moms to afford to have babies. I want to make it easier for young families to afford a home so they can afford a place to raise that family. I think theres so much we can do on the public Policy Front just to give women more options. I use this line on this, just mind your own business on this. Things worked best when roe v. Wade was in place. When we do a restoration of roe, that works best. That doesnt preclude us from increasing funding for children. It doesnt preclude us from make sure they get meals, they get early childhood education, they get health care. So hidebug hind were going to do all these other things when youre not going to propose them in the budget, Kamala Harris is proposing them. Shes proposing all those things to make life easier for families. Joining us now Politics Reporter for semafor, shelby talcott. I think theres a conventional wisdom around Vice President ial debates they dont matter all that much. I was struck by frankly how civil things are. There were moments of agreement throughout. I know you wrote about this for semafor, and you were tweeting about it as well. What do you think, some overall impressions . Did they land any blows. This was very midwestern nice, if you will. And i think thats notable particularly as weve seen with a lot of these president ial debates in recent years especially when it comes to Donald Trump, theyre not as cordial. So i think that was one really big take away that surprised a lot of people. I also think it was Policy Heavy, and i think thats notable because, again, this was for sure the most Policy Heavy debate this president ial cycle. And its notable that its coming from the Vice President ial candidates. I think thats what a lot of americans were sort of hoping for when we saw the debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. And we got a lot more indepth on policy Last Night than we did earlier this year. I do wonder, though, because it was so civil that maybe meant walz missed an opportunity to go after vance like by calling him weird, which is something he had done so effectively early on, and somewhat almost normalized some of vances positions. But i think walz did score an effective argument there on January 6th. Talk about that. That was walzs best moment of the debate. Walz didnt do terribly, but i think democrats were Breathing A Sigh of relief at that last question because they were already clipping it. Theyre already pulling it out into ads, Kamala Harris team. That was sort of his moment of the debate. And prior to that, he hadnt that Attack Dog moment. Walz started off clearly nervous but rallied into form as the evening went on. Lets talk about abortion. Obviously its one of the signature issues, one of the defining issue of this Years Election. One that Vice President Harris And Governor Walz Sort of Make A Center Piece of everything they say. How do you think that was communicated Last Night . Walzs sort of attack, if you will, and vances response. I thought it was one of the more notable moments of the debate particularly its such a big issue for americans this cycle. What i really thought was important to point out happened off the Debate Stage, and it was that during this exchange, Donald Trump went on Twitter X and posted he is obviously opposed to a national Abortion Ban and would veto one. And the Veto Part is something that he dodged on the Debate Stage a few weeks ago. So that was really newsy, and it sort of happened during this exchange during the Vice President ial debate where he felt like he had to come out and clarify, oh, actually hes against he would veto an Abortion Ban if it came to his desk. Vance has expressed support in the past for that. Last question, do you think there will be an impact from Last Night . Im not sure. I think at The End of the day the Vice President ial debates are really its an interesting question because i think the Vice President ial debates typically dont matter. And do they matter this time around . When i talked to both campaigns i think the overwhelming sense is maybe they dont. Do they push the needle for Donald Trump . Im not sure. I think it was a great opportunity for Donald Trump to get out there and show who he is and sort of push back on that weird narrative we didnt really hear on the Debate Stage. Vance presented the best version of himself Last Night. Because theres not another president ial debate scheduled, this might have been the last set piece. Potentially. You never know with Donald Trump. Good point. Shelby, thanks for starting us off this morning. Next up here well take a look at Relief Efforts underway in parts of the country including hard hit asheville, North Carolina, in the wake of hurricane helene. We have a cold front going to move through the North East and a few showers in spots going to dissipate by this afternoon, and then going to set us up for really nice days thursday, friday, saturday, and sunday. Big story in the west were looking at a Heat Wave continuing. Yesterday phoenix, 113. That was an alltime October Record and temperatures soaring once again into the 100s, breaking lots of records once again. A Fire Risk in the Northern Plains but middle of the country nice, lots of sunshine. The midwest really nice temperatures and the 70s with lots of sunshine as well. Thats as we go throughout today, and were going to continue to to watch this cold front moving throughout the North East. Again, not bringing a whole lot of rain but scattered showers and dissipating later this afternoon. Down to the south we are looking at an area of just organized weather. Were looking at some showers, some storms in the gulf. Thats going to bring some wet weather to a part of florida, and could see heavier downpours in spots. And then tomorrow, were going to talk about the gulf coast, and then were going to look towards the weekend because we could see Heavy Rain in florida by the weekend. This is a big story, 36 Million americans under heat alerts, the west and southwest, and excessive heat warnings. And, jonathan, you would hate this was temperatures are in the 100s in spots breaking daily records. I hate 100 degrees records any time of year but particularly in october, its time for fall. Donald trump actually delivered stability in the world, and he did it by establishing effective deterrence. People were afraid of stepping out of line. Iran, which launched this attack, has received over 100 Billion in unfrozen assets thanks to the Kamala Harris administration. What did they use that money for . They used it to buy weapons theyre launching against our allies and god forbid potentially launching against the united states as well. When Donald Trump was in office, it was Donald Trump who we had a coalition of nations that had boxed irans nuclear program in, the inability to advance it. Donald trump pulled that program and put nothing else in its place, so iran is closer to a nuclear weapon than they were before because of Donald Trumps fickle leadership. Welcome back to Way Too Early. Its 5 30 a. M. Here on the East Coast, 2 30 out west on this wednesday morning. Im jonathan lemire. Thank you for being with us. That was, of course, senator j. D. Vance and governor Tim Walz as they weighed in during last Nights Debate on iran and israel. But with the hem of u. S. Forces most of those missiles were intercepted and no deaths were reported in israel itself. Iranian officials are warning against any retaliation saying tehran will hit israels entire infrastructure if it takes anymore action. The idf, though, has pledged there will be a response. Joining us now, former spokesperson for the u. S. Mission to the united nations, hagar chemali. She also worked at the national Security Counsel and treasury department. Were so glad youre with us this morning. First, lets get your analysis what you saw from iran yesterday. Nearly 200 rockets and missiles. But what was with intent of that attack . This was very similar to the attack they pursued in april, where they were trying to do a show of force. They couldnt not do anything after the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah. Nasrallah is the only Reason Iran has been able to export the criminal behavior into lebanon and basically Point A Loaded Gun at israel. They had to do something. They had to show solidarity with their Hezbollah Bros. But at the same time it was about saving face. John brennen put it well yesterday when he said this is about iranian Sabler Rattling and not a declared effort to enter war or declare war because the iranian regime doesnt want to and cant enter a war. It is merely about doing something but not letting it escalate into something more significant. Certainly. Millions of people had to to take cover, rockets flying over israeli cities. Youre right. Officials i talked to said they felt it was relatively telegraphed and easily defeated. Now the question is what does israel do for response . Whats your theories . So prime Minister Netanyahu has already vowed a strong response. And you heard many u. S. Politicians also come out with that. The biden administration has said theyre going to support israel. Ive found over the last few weeks and month in particular, prime Minister Netanyahu is showing much more willingness to take rivg and gamble. And hes feeling very bold. And some of it is over the last 11 months the Netanyahu Administration has significantly weakened its proxies. And they understand, they can see that iran is on a weaker in a weaker position. So i expect definitely a strong response, something that israel is going to get out of it, targeting something whether its nuclear related or Weapons Depot related, something that is significant or achieves their own national security objectives but also that puts an end to it. I also dont Think Israel is interested in the moment given how many proxies theyre fighting at the same time. Hezbollah, hamas, houthis. They dont want to it to escalate either. Last weekend in April President biden spoke to netanyahu after those attacks and urged him take the win. We were able to defend the country with u. S. Help and israel more or less did. Their response was they hit a strategically important site in iran but they didnt escalate it further. Do we think that the president will deliver a similar message this time around . And do we think netanyahu will listen . I do think hell deliver a similar message this time around because the biden administration has shown they dont want an escalation of war. Especially if theres an confrontation with iran in a significant way, thats what would rope the united states in much more consistently. They dont want it in the runup to the election. That said netanyahu right now views this war and it has changed in the last few months. He views this as a consequential war to fundamentally change the Threat Israel faces from these Terrorist Groups and iran, to fundamentally change so they dont return to the Status Quo Preloctober 7. As someone who handled hezbollah on October 7th it looks like were on that path. Hose bola is a strong organization, nobody could have seen them diminished this way. Very last question, do we think the risk a regional war is the risk. But is it worth to deliver a blow to hezbollah . It depends who you ask. As someone who worked in Counter Terrorism a long time and someone of lebanese descent, i was happy to see the leader of hezbollah killed off. This is a leader who has brought destruction in every single way. I know many of my lebanese friends and family agree with me. Its risky also because it can cause internal strife. Extraordinarily complicated moment. Well be watching carefully in the days and weeks ahead. Former spokesperson to the united mission to the united nations, hagar chemali. Next up well go live to cnbc for an early look whats driving Wall Street after stocks dipped a bit after those rising tensions in the Middle East. Plus, nike sees a sizable drop in its revenue. Neutrogena time now for business, and for that lets bring in cnbcs Carolin Roth who joins us live from london. Good morning. Stock futures dropped overnight its a rocky start to october after a strong september. Whats driving the market this morning . Look, were going to be watching a couple of things here. First of all, nike well talk about that later on. But Nike Shares off by more than 5 after hours after the company withdrew its guidance. Second of all, geopolitics. Obviously. We saw the major Esh Clagz yesterday. And we saw the hike in the oil price. And now trends should continue in todays trading Session And Outperformance in the defense names, but airlines did underperform in yesterdays trading session. And also keep an eye on tesla. The company is giving us an update on deliveries later on today. So you mentioned oil prices. They rose more than 2 in the immediate aftermath of irans Missile Attack on israel. Should we expect a further spike or some civility . Look, thats a very difficult question to answer. Obviously it very much depends on the length of the spike in the oil price. They did raise once again today, but i do want to tell you theres a couple of factors here that are bearish for the oil markets, meaning theyre limiting the Price Gains here. First of all, there was still a lot of spare capacity in the Middle East, so a lot of supply thats left, and thats been very much limiting the prices. On the back of that also were still seeing very weak demand coming from one of the big consumers of oil, and that is china, of course. And oil analysts i talked to this morning said he still sees prices at around 70 a barrel. And of course any rise in Gas Prices will be consequential in the final weeks of a president ial election. And lastly, nike, as you said battling weaker demand amid stiff competition. Whats the latest on this Sneaker Giant . Look, this really was a shocker for the markets. We knew the companys had some issues. They replaced their ceos a couple weeks ago, but i think this latest update confirmed a negative trend because theyre fearing much worse than some of their rivals. And theyre really battling that competition. Theyre also forecasting some pretty weak holiday sales. Plenty of discounts thats great for consumers, not so much for the company. Nike also postponing its investor day. Thats never a great sign for the Analyst Community here. The new co coming in, his name actually a veteran of the company, can he turn around the fortunes of the company . That remains to be seen. All right, cnbcs Carolin Roth, live from london, thank you as always. Next up here well discuss the testy exchange over haitians in springfield, ohio. Well play for you j. D. D. Vance over his false claims about haitian migrants in springfield, ohio. Walz blamed vance and Donald Trumps divisive rhetoric for creating bomb threats in the city. Heres a part of that exchange. This is what happens when you dont want to solve it, you demonize it. And we saw this in Senator Vance, and it surprises me on this. Talking about and saying i will create stories to bring attention to this, that vilified a large number of people who were here legally in the community of springfield. The republican governor said its not true, dont do it. Theres consequences for this. Theres we could come together. Senator langford do it. We could come together and solve this if we didnt let Donald Trump continue to make it an issue. And the consequences in springfield were the governor had to send State Law Enforcement to escort kindergartners to school. I believe Senator Vance wants to solve this, but by standing with Donald Trump and not working together to find a solution, it becomes a Talking Point. And when it becomes a Talking Point like this, we dehumaninize and villainize other human beings. Governor walz brought up the community of springfield and hes very worried about the things i said about springfield. Look, in springfield, ohio, and in communities all across this country, youve got schools that are overwhelmed, hospitals overwhelmed. Youve got housing totally unaffordable because we brought in millions of illegal immigrants to compete with americans for scarce homes. The people im most worried about ipspringfield, ohio, are the american citizens who have had their lives destroyed by Kamala Harris open border. It is a disgrace, tim. I agree with you, i think you want to solve this problem, but i dont think Kamala Harris does. Later the Cbs News Moderators Fact checked vance noting haitian immigrants in springfield do have legal status, and then they did try to move onto another topic, but the senator would not let up. So the moderators eventually muted his microphone, Creating Howls Of Protest from those on the right. Joining us now professor at princeton university, eddie glaude. Always great to see you, my friend. We know the lie, the racist lie about haitian immigrants originated with j. D. Vance. He began to spread it. How do you think that played out Last Night . Well, i mean j. D. Vance first of all, its great to see you, jonathan. J. D. Vance throughout the debate i think he used the phrase illegal immigrant or illegal alien more than anything else he said the entire night. I thought Governor Walz kind of gave him a pass. I thought he was forceful to a certain degree, jonathan, in holding him to account, but in some ways i thought Governor Walz should have said who is this guy, right . He sounds reasonable, but j. D. Vance was actually cosplaying. Because when he leaves that television when he left the studio, what would he do . Hes going to go back to his maga base, and hes going to traffic in all of these lies. Hes going to traffic in all this bombast, so i thought Governor Walz should have held him to account even more. He talked about him scapegoating, dehumanizing, but i still think Governor Walz could have pressed the issue even more to expose the deepseated hatred that drives j. D. Vance and Donald Trumps campaign. Youre so right. And i think there were actually a number of moments Last Night, sort of things were left unsaid that were sort of surprising. Thats one. I mean j. D. Vance never said anything about Tim Walzs military record, fine. But walz left a lot of stuff sitting on the table. He never talked about jobless cat ladies. He never revived the weird attack, which is sort of what put him on the map in the first place. And nor did he talk about ukraine, where vance has made it clear hes not looking to help kyiv at all. Thats absolutely right, jonathan. It baffled me at a certain level. He allowed j. D. Vance to present himself as this reasonable candidate, so the debate preceded on the lines of debated proceeded on the lines of policy. He only mentioned project 2025 once and j. D. Vance wrote the preface to the book to, you know, to that 900page book. What would his myth for Golf Walz to prosecute vance in a way to be a bulldog in a way to hold him to account and to ask the question repeatedly who is this guy . This is no the guy on the campaign trail. This is not the guy talking about, you know, Childhood Cat ladies. This is not the guy who is kind of Hatred And Grievance and instead he allows j. D. Vance to present himself as normal. I was really struck by that and couldnt quite make sense of it. Do you think, though, this last Nights Debate could have moved needles or changed the trajectory. This race at all . Not at all. Not at all. I think both candidates were trying to introduce themselves to the american public. I know a lot of expectations. I had a lot of expectations for Governor Walz. We will talk to you again soon. Coming up, tensions in the Middle East. Largest ever attack on israeli. The u. S. Is now saying that what israeli is vowing to do next. Plus, we will bring you more key takeaways from the debate Last Night as they spark about topics of immigration and the economy. President Joe Biden will visit the Carolinas Today to tour Storm Damage from hurricane helene. The will meet with officials in north and South Carolina and take an aerial tour of areas impacted by the storm out there in Western Area around ashleyville. Vice president Kamala Harris will visit hurricanehit Georgia Today and plans to travel to North Carolina later in the week. Joining us now is white House Reporter for bloomberg, a kayla gardner. Good to see you this morning. Storms inevidently get pulled aside. Donald trump was in georgia earlier this week making false claims the White House had not in contact with the governor of Georgia Brian Kemp but kemp said the president called me. How is it for biden and more significantly Kamala Harris to go to these places and show she can be a leader and a consoler . President biden, today, is headed to North Carolina and South Carolina. Vice President Harris is going to georgia and something i think is notable is the fact that these trips are separate. Vice President Harris is going to North Carolina in the coming days but she decided to do this trip separately and now she is on top of the ticket and has to prove she can handle these issues independently as commander in chief. This is really a historic storm the way that biden described it yesterday and the country may not have seen something like this since the early 1900s so high stakes particularly in the two Battleground States of North Carolina and georgia. This storm is already affecting the schedules of these candidates but could have practical impacts low gistically. We are in the final stretch until Election Day less than five weeks here so these trips for both President Biden and Vice President harris will be crucial. It is striking. Every four years we look for the october surprise. Im not saying where we are but there are significant events all happening right now. The storm. The attacks in the Middle East. Iran launching missiles at israeli and we wait for Israelis Response and the strike is impacting a number of East Coast ports. That is inherently a challenge for the Vice President. How is the Vice President looking to manage these trio of crises . Harris is in an awkward position. President biden is still in the White House Ian Oval office and she is still following his lead. We have seen her address many crises independently but waiting until after President Biden has spoken and addressing the issues. This is a huge crisis for the White House and for both Biden And Harris because they have to prove that they can handle the economy. You have the strike going on with the Dock Workers that potentially could have big impacts on Supply Change and the hurricane could have economic impacts. The Middle East which is still a political issues in places like michigan. She is certainly going to have to prove she has the time from her time as Vice President and in the White House to address the issues if she is elected in november. Lets close here by last Nights Vice President ial debate. As you talk to democrats and republicans in the aftermath of what we saw Last Night, what was their takeaway . Do they think anyone came out ahead . Do we think the needle is going to move at all . The latest democrats are talking about this they dont feel there was a clear winner here and didnt feel it had a huge impact on the race. Senator j. D. Vans clearly had a strong night and showing the Interviews Vance is doing and taking questions and it paid off yesterday. Governor Tim Walz tried to be an Attack Dog but he really leaned into this Midwestern Niceness and showing ways to agree with j. D. Vance. I think some democrats are disappointed and how he would have harkened back to the falsehoods and the comments that j. D. Vance trade away from Last Night so there is disappointment there but democrats dont really believe it changed much. They are holding on to that last moment in the final, you know, few minutes of the debate where walz really pressed j. D. Vance whether he would serve the Election Results so certainly a moment i think we will see the Campaign Clipping and sharing on social media. Democrats reaching out to me wishing Governor Walz had done more interviews and maybe he would be sharper and he seemed nervous but he did close a strong January 6th moment. Thank you as always. Thank you for you getting up Way Too Early for us on this wednesday more. Morning joe starts right now. Walz and vance stuck to the issues and showed each other a lot of respect. It was very boring. Ill be honest. I like these better with trump. I really do. I dont know that Anyones Vote was changed tonight. Watching Vice President ial debate is like taking your kids picking and halfway through
