It should make a difference in a state like michigan where there is a sizable muslim population, one that honestly can influence the vote in some of the democratleading cities in the state. Over the last 24 hours youve seen increased engagement to muslim and arabic leaders here. Theyve long sought to facilitate direct engagement not just between harris and his latest but also senior leadership of her campaign and we seen that over the last 24 hours. They were able to have a virtual meeting with governor Tim Walz. We know that Today Right before her rally she spoke with some of these leaders and had conversations. She not only sought their perspectives but also communicated to them her efforts to prevent a larger conflict in the region and emphasize with them over the suffering going on In Gaza and emphasize that she is on a mission to not only of course you know, Support Israel and its mission and facilitate a hostage deal, but also ensure that the suffering In Gaza ends and that ultimately, the sense of the situation that those In Gaza are able to operate with dignity and have their own territory in that region, one that allows them to be independent and comfortable, which is something she has gone out of her way to communicate over the last couple of months. So part of a larger effort to facilitate engagement. As you mentioned, the message has not fundamentally changed from her. She has generally speaking articulated a view that would be more appealing to that muslim and arab population, particularly as it relates to the selfdetermination of the palestinians, so it is an engagement issue. She is not saying different things. Thomas is not saying different things in Kamala Harris that at the national convention or elsewhere, so what is the disconnect here . I think it is twofold. For harris and her campaign its about making it known that even if theyre not going to agree to all the demands from some of these propalestinian activists, they are willing to listen and to our taking into account some of the mans demands and requests that they had. They said they are at least hoping that if she is elected she will consider resetting u. S. Policy in the region but on the other hand some of the sustained criticism is come from how far she is willing to go. We know another large pro palestinian group in michigan, the uncommitted movement, they were not invited to that Meeting And Theyve been calling for an arms embargo, something that harris has said is a nonstarter. At the minimum, the campaign does want to demonstrate an interest in continuing to have a dialogue with members of this community and ensuring that they will have a seat at the table, should she be elected. This is incredibly consequential. The last thing we need on top of that is a manmade disaster. There are basically six owners that control the ports and theyve made incredible profits since the pandemic, and the owners are making Tens Of Millions of dollars. Chamber of commerce among others was demanding the president you the antiunion Tafthartley Act to force the dockworkers back, President Biden flipped the script. The owners could make the choice to end the strike and help the country. The owners have plenty and dont need to be greedy, especially during the recovery from a natural disaster. It looks like a success, at least for a time, but how serious could this have been . I think this couldve been very, very serious. That is why the president was so definitive about telling us we needed to get this resolved. Obviously, we have devastation from hurricane helene. We needed to keep those supplies flowing for recovery, rebuilding and of course we know already from the pandemic what happens when the ports seize up and its hard for us to get our farm exports out, our Food Imports in, so we knew that we were really racing against the clock here. In fact before the pandemic people like you who have been involved in Supply Chains and things like that for most of america, we learn about it for the first time when you buy something and its not there or you can get things done. The experience of the pandemic, did that add more urgency to this . We have actually now vanquished that inflation so it is very important to the president that we not see any of those kinds of precious creeping back in. People are just beginning to breathe a sigh of relief and absolutely we learned a lot during the pandemic about how vital our ports are, how vital it is for us to work with retailers, to work with our exporters, our carriers, and of course, our dockworkers to make sure that those goods keep flowing in and out. What is the distinction the president was making about i dont believe in the sort of intervention the u. S. Chamber of commerce is looking for. Clearly, you all at the White House were involved in this thing. What is the distinction between what it is you and your colleagues at the White House were doing to get these negotiations on track versus what people are calling for the president to do, to tell the dockworkers not to strike. There is absolutely, during moments like that, when a lot is at stake for the economy for consumers, you will always hear calls to shortcircuit the collective Bargaining Process, to undermine it by using mechanisms like tafthartley, but you heard the president very clearly stating at the outset, we are going to support the collective Bargaining Process, and the president , Vice President , consistent, strong supporters of the power of Collective Bargaining and so , what he directed us to do is work with both parties to get them back to the table. They had not been talking for months. The last time an offer had been put on the table was in the middle of 2023, so we knew that we had to figure out a way to find mechanisms to enable that collective Bargaining Process, which is so important for workers to get back and away, and that is what we set out to do. We have seen a number of examples in the last few years of strikes or about to be strikes with the teamsters were the Uaw Strike for the president when out. We have seen examples of a lot of distance between what The Union ask is, and what the owners are prepared to do and we have seen resolutions through Collective Bargaining. This one is not over. This is on hold until january. What happens between now and then and what level of involvement do you and your colleagues have in it between now and january . What i would say is, now, the operators, the carriers on the one hand, the u. S. Maritime alliance and The Union, the international longshoremens association, they have now agreed to give themselves 90 more days till January 15th of 2025, to get a contract negotiated. What was the deciding move was that the carriers put a big Wage Increase on the table, which The Union was able to accept as the starting gun to get these negotiations back on track. Both sides will engage at the bargaining table, which is exactly how it is supposed to work and hopefully, over the course of the next 90 days, they will be able to work everything else out, and again, if there are any breakdowns in that process we now know how we can help them keep talking, stay at the table, really take advantage of that collective Bargaining Process that works. And you have built up some trust in the process so hopefully you will have to use it again but hopefully we avert this again. Congratulations and thank you for joining us tonight. It also calls for decreasing federal support for Disaster Relief and recovery. Right now through fema the federal government spends roughly 75 of disaster related expenses. State and local governments cover the rest. But, project 2025 calls for congress to change the Cost Sharing Agreement so that the federal government covers 25 of the cost for disasters. End quote. 25 , funding over only a quarter of disaster could bankrupt counties in places like the Florida Coast that are repeatedly hit with hurricanes and when it comes to assistance after storm, project 2025 calls for privatizing the national Flood Insurance Program and eliminating rents for states and groups to help repair and rebuild with more sustainable infrastructure. You would think that elected officials, especially ones from states like florida, which has repeatedly asked for and received, rightfully so, federal aid, would protest the heritage Foundations Project 2025 agenda but here is what Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott things. Here is what Rick Scott said about Climate Change. He apparently admits that it is a thing but here is how he frames it. Then he went on Inside Edition and made additional claims that were also weird, so he is being deceitful and dishonest and unfortunately, he is doing that because he is trying to distract voters from the real issues at hand. Hes trying to make himself likable. The family thing, that is the problem with it. We actually have real issues to deal with in this country, abroad, as you know from your military history, so this obsession with what your family looks like and what it is made of is an absolutely unnecessary diversion for president ial candidates. Absolutely, and for congressional candidates at that, but if you are trying to distract from the real issues, which is where you stand on project 2025, which is this extreme Maga Agenda to eliminate overtime pay, to reduce Social Security benefits, to reduce veterans benefits, to politicize the federal civilian workforce, which would really hurt our district, this is what you do.
