HARRISON - A track-and-field official fatally injured by a javelin "mistakenly drifted" into the path of a spear thrown by a college athlete, a police report shows.
William A. Scott, 71, of Oaklyn was bleeding from a neck wound, but was "alert, conscious and speaking to EMS units" shortly after the noontime accident on April 3, according to an incident report from Rowan University's police department.
Rowan EMS units were on standby at the scene when the incident occurred during an athletic competition, the Oscar Moore Invitational.
Rowan police officers arrived about five minutes later at the school's sports fields on the 700 block of Mullica Hill Road in Harrison.
