Macario Gonzaga, LTO 12 director, said the random drug testing among public utility commuter van and bus drivers at the city's integrated public terminal and the Yellow Bus Line Inc. terminal was in line with the implementation of the "Oplan Pasko - Heightened Alert Status" and "Oplan Ligtas Biyahe" to ensure the safety of commuters during the holiday season. The random drug testing was carried out Wednesday in partnership with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Region 12. "We are fortunate that out of the 40 drivers, none of them were tested for illegal drug use, this would probably make our commuters safe during their travel," Gonzaga said in an interview. He said the initiative, which was ordered by the LTO Central Office and the Department of Transportation (DOTr, serves as a reminder to all drivers that the Christmas season is the peak time for commuters who want to meet distant family members and relatives. He said LTO-12 teams have been deployed this week to monitor terminals, major roads, and strategic areas in the entire region. Gonzaga also reminded drivers to check on their vehicle's registration and driver's license before traveling. "I appeal to the drivers to follow traffic rules. Do not be reckless to avoid vehicular accidents and save lives and properties," Gonzaga said. The Oplan Ligtas Biyahe will run until January 5, 2022. (PNA) }
