A tragic fallout of covid is that it has created a large number of orphans. Many children have lost parents who succumbed to covid.
Social media is filled with requests to ‘adopt’ children who are newly orphaned. Posters of child care services are floating on WhatsApp groups, which promise to offer children food, emotional security support.
Considering the seriousness of the issue, and how vulnerable children are when they find themselves orphaned, the government has formed a committee to identify such children and provide them with shelter. These children will be handed over to their extended families after verification or sent to institutions / orphanages managed by NGOs, under the
