The last shooting happened at 2 00 in the morning. The shooting has happened in the afternoon. They do expect this to go on for a long time. And again, the situation is still developing. There is so much that we still dont know but are youdo you anticipate feeling safe again on post . I would like to say yes, not to say that living on post is any more dangerous than living off post, but this is the second time this is happening in five years and their family and their loved ones and that in itself is prideful. Thank you guys so much. Absolutely, absolutely. Chris bray is a civilian who oversees 50 to 100 buildings on fort hood. Chris do you know any more about whats happening right now . Well only that i talked to some of my my deputies at fort hood. Im actually at forth 1 leavenworth. They are all sheltering in place. We have standards in place since 2009 since the major nadal hasan incident. We do regular examiners to exero prepare for these types of events for plant mobilization and security for fort hood has to do with this. Personally im responsible for the training areas and arranging the training that takes play at fort hood. One of the things that we did in reaction to this of course was we shut down our ranges, we actually had some live fire events going on down there, we shut down the ranges and opened up the air space for evacuation of casualties. And you know ive just checked with my deputy whos in charge back there. You know theres a full accountability taking place for all personnel. Of course, the timing of it being right around the 16 30 time frame half of my people were leaving for the day. So when you say full accountability if they are leaving does that mean you get back right away . No, no, no, if they left they stay out. Obviously the gates are shut down immediately. We have to account for them, we have to know where theyre at to report. So thats the full accountability, thats for both government civilians and roars. And just within my division alone theres probably a combination of 500 contractors and va civilians and with within our directorate at least twice that number. So just to account for each individual takes a bit of time as well especially when youre sheltered in place. This medical brigade building, that were hearing about, tell us about that building. Well, that building is really not under my control. And ive seen pictures of Darnell Army Hospital on the news and im not clear yet neither are any of my people where precisely the incident took mace. If it was dar took place. If it was darnell Military Hospital that is the primary hospital on base, that was where major hasan worked out of back in 2009. I would hate to think that was the same center point of this event again. But that mar facility is located just about that particular facility is located just about in the center of the main garrison of fort hood. And of course fort hood as you know is a large installation, 192,0092,000 acres, one of largt military installations as its referred to. Chris if you could sit tight, i have an update i need to pass on. Fort hoods director of services, this is what theyre reporting, an initial report that a shooter is dead but this is unconfirmed. This is coming to us from the Fort Hood Press center. I know that thats a bit confusing but again, this is coming from the Fort Hood Press center. The Emergency Services has an initial report that a shooter is dead but this is unconfirmed. Chris just mentioned darnell Medical Center, the press center is saying that is where the injured are being taken. Also to some of the local hospitals as well. Theres a wonderful Medical Center in temple, this is hospitals in waco as well, the number of injured are not confirmed at this time, senior medical official confirmed to the Associated Press that there were 14 injured and one person dead and the post is still currently on lock down. Thats where things stand right now. So that is a combination of information that has been confirmed to the Associated Press and thats also what the Fort Hood Press center is reporting. So that is whats happening at fort hood right now. The Associated Press saying that this has been confirmed for them by a Senior Defense official that one person has been killed, 14 people injured. Lets go now to washington, d. C. Where our lisa stark is also gathering more information. Lisa what do you know . Reporter well, we are expecting to hear momentarily from the president , he is expected to make a statement to the pool there about this shooting. I will say that after the Navy Yard Shooting here in washington, d. C. The president attended a memorial at that time and said i have now grieved with five american communities, ripped apart by mass violence. And of course, after the shootings at the Elementary School in connecticut the president pushed for Gun Legislation which has gone nowhere on capitol hill, that has gone nowhere of course, secretary of defense chuck hagel is in hawaii, expected to hold a news crrches about 8 0 eight owe conference about 8 oclock eastern. He has also been briefed abouting what good on on the base. Both secretary of defense hagel and the president being briefed on what is going on. Obviously this is a developing situation and as you have talked about, conflicting reports whether there is still an active shooter, whether the shooter has perhaps died, we are hearing all sorts of reports that at this moment cannot be confirmed completely. Richelle. Lisa stark, as we said, something top of the hour is something we expect to hear from defense secretary chuck hagel. Jonathan betz has been doing research. We are hearing about this medical brigade building. As lisa said, this is a fluid situation, something we dont know. We are hearing something, possibly this has been happening around the medical brigade building. What do you know . Right, there has been a lot of attention on the medical brigade building, the first medical brigade is based at fort hood. That is basically the facings combat medics, its combat forces, the doctors and nurses that deploy into the field. It is the oldest unit, the largest, they also support darnell hospital on base which is where many of the injured from this most recent shooting are ain. In are taken. In 2009 i found striking there were obviously 13 killed, a very high death toll, there were feelings that there were a lot higher if not for the fact that soldiers were trained in combat medicine and combat injuries. That made a big difference in the death toll in saving lives that immediately, within seconds of being shot, there were soldiers who knew how to respond to these injuries. Some of them had been to war . And were about to be redeployed back to war, which in 2009 they were targeted by major nalnadal hasan. He wanted to protect the taliban, on his own muslim holy war. They had been trained in combat medicine saved lives. I think its worth noting the first medical brigade was based there, and thats the reason for that attack there, the shooting. From the Fort Hood Press center i understand its a little confusing bus this is official information domg us from but this is potential information coming to us from the press center, director of Emergency Services what they are saying they have an initial report that a shooter is dead but this particular office is saying this is unconfirmed. And i want to keep repeating this to you. Because any time we get potential information that is important to pass official information, thats whats coming from fort hood. I want to update you. In that same press release theyre also saying the injured personnel are being transferred to darnell Medical Center, i want to show you where that is on fort hood. The visitor entrance is right here and this is where the darnell hospital entrance is, this is where the injured are being taken, according to authorities right now. She has been sending out images. Earlier she sent out this. It says theyre stopping traffic here at the main gate. And the waco police earlier were sending out tweets, beware if youre in the fort hood post area theres an active shooter. And then earlier on, they had not been asked to respond but due to the proximity of fort hood, theyre keeping people informed. And also a nearby college had evacuated richelle as you announced earlier, this is princess she took a screen shot of her cell phone. She said no wonder i hear sirens and the text message says no classes this evening on central fort hood campuses due to active shooter reported by fort hood. Richelle. Maria, you started talking about darnell hospital, on the post, some of the injured were taken to local hospitals as well and temple that would be scott and white hospital in wa waco, having carried the area, those are some of the hospitals there. Im on the phone with peter ahearn, it is difficult oknow whether or not the situation has been stabilized because fort hood is saying their Emergency Services that they had an initial report that the shooter is dead but that is unconfirmed. So this may still be an active situation. Quite frankly we just dont know right now, which is quite frankly that happens in situations like this. What do you make of that . Well, you said it. It does happen. The confusion, the first response, trying to figure out where things are going on, sifting through misinformation from good information and trying to get a handle on things while youre trying to wait for the cavalry to arrive with other help with the local police and the fbi will get there and try to work with them to find where this shooter is and to neutralize the shooter as soon as possible. That is the critical thing right now. If they cant find him right away then youre going to go into a search situation which is going to be take a lot of time. Because they also have to get people out of the lock down situation and get them safely evacuated from the area so its very confusing. Talk about what a task that is, when youre talking about a facility that has weapons, has ammunition, has people that are armed, and it is several hundred thousand acres, and there is a lot of civilians, theres children. Right. Theyre going to try take as much information they can get. I can tell you right now i would bet there are people that were injured that can speak and talk to try to get some intelligence as to who the person might have been, where the person came from, and they might be able to narrow an area down. Buttists hard to answer those but its hard to answer those questions now. Its going to be a monumental task, as they clear intelligence, talk to witnesses things might be clear. Right now you dont know whether its something involved with terrorism or it could be a domestic situation where somebody in the military and a couple and some type of a marital disagreement you just dont know what this is right now and a lot of speculation at this point because of whats happened historically on that base with major hasan back in 2009 when he went on his rampage. If you could hold on for just a moment, theres information coming in. Lets look ahead tell people whats going to be happening in a few minutes. Were talking about hospitals, scott white and temple said they would give us an update about quarter past the hour because they received three patients. You are aghast. You cant put in security protocols, better security proalt coalesce than fort hood, you can protocols than fort hood. The president has made some comments. We dont have the tape, i dont think yet, but i can tell you what he said. He said we are heartbroken that a shooting has happened at fort hood, again. President obama said he is chosely following what is going on at the fort closely following what is going on at the Fort Hood Army base. He said the situation is nude and he also said he promise is fluid and he also promises to get to the bottom. He says what many feel tonight that he is so simply heartbroken to hear that this shooting, another shooting has occurred at fort hood, where that tragedy took place in 2009, that took 13 lives. Of course and injured more than 30. So here we are again at the same sprawling base, a repeat of the nightmare. Although as we say hopefully not nearly as bad as happened in 2009. But again, the president saying he is heartbroken and he promises to get to the bottom of what happened at fort hood. And as soon as we have the actual comments we will bring them to you. Would you think that after the 2009 shooting which by the way the administration has never never identified what it was an act of terrorism, without question, they refer to it as an episode of workplace violence, an actual insult and disgrace to the families that were injured, why were those protocols, were they tested, were they vetted . How it could have happened again, im stunned. Look, i hear you and one of the people we were speaking to a moment ago, chris bray, who was on post and charge of a lot of facilities says a lot of checks and balances have been put in place since 2009. And it seems like some of the checks and balances were after the fact. What are we going to do if this happens again . But surely just when these unfortunate awful shootings happen on University Campuses there is an investigation after the fact, there is a what are we going to do if this thing happens again, because you have to learn from them. There is a repetitive pattern, we had the incident in the navy yards outside washington, d. C, we clearly know certain locations are going to be high risk targets, whether its an act of terrorism, i dont know if this person is a disgruntled individual, the individual booker that the fbi interviewed last week, or information that i can detail on, but certainly you can appreciate the fact that a military location is going to be high target, if there is security anywhere its got to be on base. Let me go to peter ahearn, a former fbi agent, as time ticks by and theres so much that we still dont know what are your thoughts . I think at this point its just too early to guess. Youre going to go that full spectrum of, i think people are thinking its some type of terrorist event. You have to see. The interviews with intelligence let me sop you here. I did not ask the proper question and i apologize for that. Thats not exactly what i meant. I actually meant as theyre trying to stabilize the situation where do you think things stand right now with that . Thats more what i meant. My apologies. That is the perfect word. They are trying to find out if they can localize the event and see where this person was. But again they are going to have to get a massive amount of resources in, federal agencies, state, local and if they have to go to grid searches get those people that are locked down out and safely evacuated it is going to become the priority where they try to find the active shooter, its still an active shooter situation.
