Listening intently to the news on the international situation over in Zimbabwe. An ongoing situation there with rumors of a military coup and things like that and Graham says Richard have you ever notice that the desperately Robert Mugabe surname pronounced backwards is actually. Dumbing down I think. What's the last thing you do before you go to bed. That message with the word late. And we've got quite a few pays to school between now and. Will do that next. President. To negotiate the minefield that buying Christmas presents. A text. Message with the words. If you would like to ask Graham Graham quite contrary. And while you're doing that . a moment if Hal. Wayne no longer needs an apostrophe is it time we dropped it from oclock. That's And many of the burning punctuation issues. Will be answered in the person you're going to mate's new book Caroline targets is the author of The Accidental apostrophe and over misadventures in punch you ation Good morning tell me about the accidental apostrophe Please Well the accidental apostrophe is my attempt at helping people who don't really understand about punctuation it's not a diatribe I'm not absolutely anti him oh geez antic speak and anything of that sort in fact I think it's a wonderful piece of creative writing but only in its place and I think it's terribly important to make a distinction between the casual things that we all do on social media and the correct way of doing things that might be relevant if you were writing a job application or writing a report at work or something of that sort How seriously do you take punctuation because I I think there is of a very steep and a very long sliding scale of people and how they take their punctuation because some people get extremely worked up about it while others almost laugh in the face of good English and grammar Well I think if laughing in the face of it is 0 and getting really worked up is 10 I'm about an 8 because yes as everybody says it's a living language things have to change but punctuation can change meaning and it can change new it can change tone and speaking to you and we're not in the same room. I can still pause I can alter my tone of voice if we were face to face I could smile or I could frown or I could track my shoulders at a pinch I can say oh you know what I mean when you're right and you can't do any of those things and that's what punctuation is for is there in particular any part of punctuation I'm not sort of getting you to say the or the apostrophe is better than the semi-colon Richard Already thing is as churlish is that but is there anything that you feel really strongly about well I think that you can have a lot of fun with ellipses dot dot dot for example his views are old fashioned statement of fact his views are dot dot dot old fashioned means how shall I put this I don't want to come right out and say that he's a bigot you can get all sorts of different subtleties and changes of tone just by messing about with punctuation the example the you use on the on the little blurb that we get sent out of these interviews is the old let's seats grandma or. Let's say grandma. If you do actually miss one. A comma or something out in a sentence like that it isn't a new on c. It completely changes the meaning I indeed and I'll tell you a true story that cropped up in conversation when I was researching this book a friend of mine runs a small bakery and she had a text from one of her clients saying is this cake suitable for vegetarians and she replied Well it has aches in it if that's what you mean and the reply came back completely and punctuated no eggs are fine. Whereas in fact what she meant was no comma eggs are fine so not only did she write the opposite of what she meant she did herself out of a cake I think that serious. What do you think or what do you want people to get from this book our life well mostly enjoyment it's a dip in the now to book I always think of my books as Lou books that people can pick up and put down whenever they like but I hope that there are some basics in there there are some things there's a whole generation about my age who when they were at school in the sixty's simply weren't taught punctuation I was at school in New Zealand to my education was very different but lots of people were told No just express yourself let it all hang out in a very sixty's sort of way and they simply don't know and it's surprising how many people feel. Inadequate unconfident because they don't know how to put put a full stop or a semi-colon So I hope it'll help them a bit and it might make them laugh a bit too as this become a course war I'm going to choose my words carefully here addiction with regards to the language because if people think it is the same lady with a 500 words you should know or misadventures in the English language or all these books I mean you very much enjoy and you get a great deal of pleasure I'm guessing otherwise you wouldn't do it's writing and learning and bringing to people's attention the little delicate details of the wonderful English language Exactly exactly so I get completely obsessed with whatever I'm working on when I started researching this book about a year ago my sister and I went on holiday to Brazil as it happens on a long haul flight coming back I'm reading a book and I thought what a really wonderful example of commas and my sister was asleep and I thought. Don't wake her up she's not going to be as excited by this since you are. I'm sorry so I look at the commas in yeah yeah yeah. My big sister you can imagine how that would have gone down in well it's certainly a very very nice book thanks for talking to us about this morning and the accidental apostrophe and all of the misadventures in punctuation with Caroline tag and that is where Caroline we put the full stop thanks for talking to us this morning thanks very much indeed. Radio Good morning 20. 9 with Graham after 10 this morning your questions answered via telephone text an email and we're going Christmas shopping next. Testing times. A lot to discuss so make sure. Special. Special guests managing director. 7 only 3 points off the play offs is everything at. Once the view from the. Journey is for a. Special with. Now when it gets to this time of year. Very very heated debates on radio station phone ins open down the country on social media as to when is the correct time to put your Christmas tree up one's the correct answer to the holes when's the right. Put the cake up Sunday and all the ports it's quite widely accepted that people are now now braving braving the Christmas shop ports. When it comes to getting the right president for the right person and you only get him apparently as a nation we are not good at buying presents many people read gift items so let's speak to a retail expert who might be able to help us as we head towards Black Friday and that big December rush Claire Bailly Good morning hi good morning so we're no good at buying presents basically you know but we think we are apparently something like 70 percent of us are of the opinion we're doing a really good job where 80 percent of us fake that smile when working in the present with disappointment thinking what's on earth is this I asked people what they want is that not the done thing I mean I don't buy loads of presents for loads of people not got a big family or or anything like that book that kind of negates sword to do a lot of people just go blind Claire and think you know I know bash this is what I'm going to buy my mate who I've known for 304050 years or whatever it does appear so and they do admit that they serve are going into it with a bit of a lack of research perhaps panic buying and so on and the research that we're looking up to clip was commissioned by Amazon dot com ek it says that 2 thirds of us are actually giving away those unwanted presents because to other people there's a sort of a rigged and recycling but only 40 percent of us are willing to write those gift lists so if you're asking people what you want some of them are a little bit Caughey now oh no don't worry about me I don't want anything maybe only 40 percent of them and I bet most those the kids in the teenagers as well most of those people are sort of reluctant in a way so it leads us into a bit of a difficult position this won't work out of all the choices available out there in the retail market one do you buy so I think Sunny's an online applications where you can apply filters and use these gift find a technique say well it's my mom and she's this age and she's really into her cooking or cake decorating or d.i.y. . I who knows but using the hobbies and interests setting a budget and then actually been able to filter right down to get some decent suggestions of what might be more suitable will hopefully mean that we are getting it right more often and we won't have our friends and relatives looking at us sort of their gritted teeth of fake smile and say No you are is lovely and thinking how do I get rid of this junk you know something you know what you've made me do that Claire I've been shifting around uneasily because you have highlighted the fact that I am a horrible Christmas hypocrite because I do ask I said What do you want to tell me what you want what you want gone or what you write Ok and if people say to don't worry just whatever you know whatever your fancy I'm there and I'm not 1st so I am actually the reason that these problems occur it's these people like me planted to look at myself in the mirror maybe but I think the thing is really difficult if somebody doesn't give you any state unless you start asking probing questions will obviously know a little about them hopefully if you find them present you should know them well enough to know what their interests are at least that way you can start to use some of these online tools to fail to things down and get to a better answer because otherwise I mean I am guilty of it too I have to admit you get the Oh no I you know I don't mind it's the thought that counts Well then you're probably gonna get a box of chocolates for a fuck live wine or a parasol because it is difficult to work it out unless you've got you know he's clever tools to help you find a better more inspiring. Chocolate booze and socks are all my Christmas list classes down markedly hacked up about 20 percent who aren't faking the smile. Lovely saucy Thank you have a similar Claire Bailly their retail experts the pitfalls of the Christmas shop on b.b.c. Radio Leeds we're also talking about men many things this morning responsible can about punctuation morning Saddam in a solution is Richard I think there's a big question mark about how relevant punctuation is in today's world. On the subject serve what you do if he gets a bad of any was the last thing you did before you got so bad or what's on your on your bedside table if Chipman will tell us in a moments Good morning. Who's been interested Richard I listen to the sound of ocean waves breaking in my alarm clock the only downside is that the opposite of this peaceful sound is that I've got a foregone alarm that goes off in the morning and that's from Angela notice feel good morning to Angela. Eloise well to see you says 60 years ago I was youngest of 4 kids we would all end up in the same bed and see you could tell the scary stories my dad worked nights when things got too scary we'd all pile into our mother's bad me poor mom never got any place Happy Days happy day says See And good morning this morning Johnny says a whiskey glass of milk and talk to the dill. And if you have too many whiskeys the duck starts it all back into that one as well Dave what was sort of your roots a knowledge of anything interesting on the old bedside table you'd like to share with us this morning the bedside table was a copy of the Beano right yeah Ok the children likely middle things on the side of the bed and a part of drawings as well which have to keep it right that their precious scribbles morning routine just get up right now even if we're going to sleep we're going to sleep Davy it's leaping gang rice and you're sleeping. No no routine now now in the city. The phone that's important it is a very home is everything the phone is the alarm clock it is for most people and I've got to say just on the subjects of the scribbles as you say many kids if you go to our old. 8. 10 thing that I did yesterday telling and just 10 in a week actually with a screw because we're getting a lot of these at the my. It's the Pointer Sisters and. On b.b.c. Radio we've almost pulled about together just about. We're on that we're teaching on the edge this morning. Anything could just push is of a. Morning so when a case like says Richard decades or so in the email thank you when he by the way decades ago way back in the seventy's my young nephew volunteered to put together a tricky flat pack bedside cabinet for me it was for decades yes a fully 40 years later I discovered it had a pull out shelf at the top Police say the attach photo I had no idea how this extra feature just right for my clock and there's a wonderful picture there of it when his bedside cabinet including the shelf with the clock on it when he goes on to say the cabinet is festooned as you'll see in the photo with take tax of what needs to tax on the old bedside cabinet the $45.00 cream and boxes of animal wool for my feet. 6. It's been one of the more isn't it I'll leave the thought with you Richard thank you in the Jena Jiah appreciate it so much everybody needs a box of animal wall for the fates on the bedside table doubt they Graham Porter they do. Our lives very simply Richard I've a box of tissues in a book bedside lamp and that's the job very good marvelous lovely Well there may actually struggling Graeme have been. Sarah's It brought me to tears just just just after the news there so I'm hoping I'm hoping that because you see the best thing is we never get anything cheeky already double entendres or anything like that in the garden so so will be all right let's course we don't you know nothing and nothing pops into this slot so we are fine between now and half past 11 your gardening questions answered all now 345303 tradeable 3 Tax Day one trouble 3 style the message with the word leads or email Richard stead of b.b.c. Doco dot u.k. I'm going to start with an email scene as I've just been looking at Winnie's animal will for a feat this is from Katherine she says Richard Graham mention Christmas Rosie's last week I have to planted last autumn they were very healthy and flowered well however they disappeared through the summer and I can't see them coming back up how vile lost them or are they meant to reemerge as winter comes plays that's a very good question what should happen is the plant should flower in the in the over the winter period probably up until sort of sometime in mid April and then you get a brand new photo each that appears. After the flowers so you get a really wonderful display of photos in the old flower stems die away so what you should see each year in the summertime is a wonderful sort of display of Christmas rose during the summer and then come this time of year you then cut all the fire luge back and I did mine last weekend in our just. Leave a sort of a little 4 or 5 inch stump on the photos so that on I know exactly where the plant is and then the new flower stems come out from there so if you didn't get any summits on photo each There's a bit of a suspicion that you are your hellebores of going the way of all flesh. As it vanished I suggest a. Little tickle with a trial might help right so you're saying in summary Catherine if you give your hellebores a tickle with the trial then that should rectify the wrongs that we got a lovely stand out and now we can i want rectify the wrong but at least see to find out whether they. Really should speak only says Molly Ritchie Graham we had a bottle per respray crop this year which the kids loved how far down do I need to prune or cook the k. . Got what it really depends on whether these are autumn flowering autumn fruiting Rosemary's or traditional summer fruiting robbers if they're the summer as bruised we crop at the end of June end of June early July then the old fruit in kinds can be taken right the way down to the ground but it must only be the old fruit in kinds because what you should have is some brand new fruit in kinds that have come up during the summer time and those are the ones that will then fruit next year so you leave those alone and cut out the ones that are fruited. There you go Richard thank you very much in date couple of e-mails text sorry let me get that factually correct an e-mail and a text to start off if you would like to ask a question very very simple you can call 03453033. You can text trouble for a style that message with the word lades or like Katherine with the Halle balls needed to claim with a trial and you can e-mail Richard stead at b.b.c. . And. late. To go sees another one of us to badly Russell Walker It's all about bedtime ritual play not Russell. Pelleted told as well he says Richard Graham my Christmas roses are in flower now and yesterday I had a huge bumblebee on my basket pansies the weather is crazy says told Todd thank you for is it crazy weather at the moment are we seeing things we wouldn't normally see at this time of year in the garden Graham Yes we all think things that should have long since gone to sleep. Haven't. The the bumblebee stories repeat I got it in my garden 2 days ago I had I've got a winter flowering honeysuckle in the garden that's got very highly scented flowers and there was a bumble bee Well it was a queen bumblebee Chris you know you can tell the queen because I said Lalage. And it really should have been long since asleep but we really haven't had that call whether you say so we've had a day of cold and then 2 days of modern The dog mother die of cold and we've had reports of people having magnolias and chameleons and rhododendrons in flower and it's all because of this peculiar autumn so in fact the whole weather Socceroo this whole year has been a bit old really to the real so that we are Jacqueline's in Atlanta Why morning Jaclyn morning when you try to grab one object in any health am I am asking. The City question but I have been all keep it going at those ideas about 40 yes. People To fall is being built for the back of p.t. Stright and the crowd at the nit nearly all year round it's flowered and had to have owned off some of the status cream gotten that spill to fall since then you wouldn't arrived on the scene the old one just getting up. C to something how very strange the sensitive and he can see them can see the new one does it think it is. Reducing kind of what it wanted depends on what you believe Jackie and it was a lovely book written in a $920.00 is called The Science of flowers. And it was about the sensitivity of towns and one of the experiments they did was to put 2 identical plants in soundproof rooms they've long completely cotton tie the other on music and you can guess which ones right the one with the music so you depend on what you've been evading but but it could well be some sensitivity that we don't have any understanding of. Or if you've had that problem for 14 years it might just have given up the ghost because you had enough well enough and I love it but I just didn't realize that they that the guy did you had a lot well and you know it sounds a bit silly but it just seems strange when I've got this new ad this new one but they're the ones just I think if I leave it you think it couldn't I mean you still got to believe that you still got the. The long their residents of the flower spikes Yes yes but he did not want that crew to the boat to get well I think the more why right and the good it will have to but it will have you got them in separate rooms or have you gotten the songwriter for me to see each other so I think you know me very. Well and why she was here for Richie to respond to this one but I don't really depends on what you believe in but as a side the science of flowers was an incredible boat that gave us all these weird and wonderful scientific experiments that people had a go at it may well be that there is a sensitivity that we can't pick up. I think it would be very unusual because obviously anybody has a collection and in fact I was asking Braun college the other evening at a meeting and part of the greenhouse I have a collection of all keys it's been given to them by. A well known Oakley grow in the area and of course they're all on the same shelves in the same greenhouse so. They will probably be able to pick at the base of the fine yeah so it may well be that the plant of 14 years in the sun can tighten this I position my will have just given up the ghost Ok thank you all right thank you for the silly question but I just thought you might know now what I just an interesting question but I don't. Really no such thing is a silly question when it comes to God and grandma violence because as you know we're less use often said you know the show much that you learn in all the sign Yes You know what I mean well I've been at it 50 is Richard and I still never ceases to amaze me how little I know so it's such a Vost complex subject so they were. A few of us have bought an Amaryllis bulb with compost in pots. Yes I wanted to know the best way to grow it and have you any tips for me to make mine really grow as I want to win the Best in Show competition we are doing Simon in Rothwell is in a Amaryllis bull glowing competition. Last year Tim and I had a and Amaryllis competition. Brought him a box and in the box is a pot and a bowl and some compost. And you. You plant according to the instructions so you put the compost into the pot in the compost and you then snuggle the bulb into the top of the compost and you put it on a warm sunny window and you sit and wait and it's really as simple as that and once a plant is thrown up a flower spike which inevitably it will do afterwards it will then throw up some fairly age and you can then start to feed the plant for a few months over the sort of the latter part of the winter and into the spring. And that fading will then help to restore the bulb and then you can then send the bulb to sleep by drawing it out during summer and you know it started again the following year around this time of year so it's fairly straightforward really I love the way you say snuggle the ball I'd say sneaky stick stick in the soil just stick it in their eyes not quite as simple as that Richard because I I actually I drew a picture for Tim on Sunday morning cause we had a question about this on Sunday and I do a very quick sketch for. For Tim and he took a photo of a photograph of the sketch and actually put it on the Facebook page to indicate the sort of depth that you put the bulb into the pot if you planted deep as in the whole bowl these below so level then you would it probably won't react in the right way you'll probably get an awful lot of not really a good quality flower if you perch on the top of the compost you might all get a lot of flower and very little foliage. But if you if you just literally snuck into the top of the compost so perhaps the. Lovely You can see that picture on the Facebook page the original drawing that Graham did for Tim's fridge.
