Think it works. Wow break 1st in America from Supertramp here on b.b.c. Radio Lincolnshire Melvin Pryor with you through until the 1 o'clock today keep your calls Texan e-mails coming into the show always good to hear from you for travel Tuesday today I was doing something a little bit different we're talking about motorhomes and caravans and also camper vans as well I've come out of the studio b.b.c. Radio Lincolnshire if you're driving past that moment you will see that we have something very special part in front of the building at the moment and I believe I believe this is getting ready to go away for the winter months and Davis is with me and what am I looking out and looking at t 2971 Volkswagen camper van in amazing I mean 2 yellow color fantastic was it like this when you got it yes actually it was yeah yeah we searched hard to find one that was in really good condition and luckily after a few attempts we found Betty Driver Dave is also here Dave what does she like to drive. Entertaining interest in the ice got to be things not too bad in modern day traffic but it's not a flying machine I think the biggest issue is no power steering so. Back to the old days so how do people find it when the. Taker Oh if they're hiring something like that like Betty Do they have to get used to the fact there's no power steering you know they do it over again with just a little bit of a row chest around the block a chair comfortable they are. Yeah basically the butt like a power steering and fishing for the gears sometimes it's not always at the 1st time an event that we normally get their arms at their arch on it when you when you hear people driving off with her Do you sometimes have to put your head in your hands and thinks is the gearbox going to be be Ok when they come back you should be a bit of a worry that to be honest with yourself to learn to relax with it now most people seem to be able to manage it within just a small amount of time to be thin everybody when they bring it back say how much easier it is to master once they're relaxed and not so on the pressure when they start over the most that next to you know we enjoy every time they get the wrong but I think that's obvious it's like you know taking somebody out for a driving lesson you know when the person is passed the test they feel more comfortable afterwards don't they do you get to drive Betty on Occasionally yes but I think really it's something that you have to get used to a little bit but once you get started there's no stopping you really Ok why camper vans for you where did it come from well a couple of years ago we wanted to actually hire a camper van to go away on holiday and we found it really difficult to find one and ended up getting a modern van and we thought really we'd like a v.w. Camper van and we thought well actually let's have a look at the hiring business because we found it was very difficult to get one ourselves and once we started with Betty we found that people were really keen and people who used to go on holiday with themselves back in the seventy's come along can go all misty eyed and say Oh we used to go in these when we were kids on holiday so we thought you know that was a great starting point and yeah that's that's how it started and then we acquired another van so you got to know what's the other one called Dirty Betty and Bertie How different is Bertie to Betty. Ursula. Younger and has a slightly different layout inside as well I think everyone is different it depends how they've been fitted out so I was Bertie bought as a camper van there and it was all kitted out and everything when you bought him yeah been fully stripped down and we researched again into buying one then already fully restored somebody else's for all the time and effort in no way to do was actually part with the money to get it to be honest with you and a few small modifications to make it suitable for hire in Accenture and then you're going to go down to go and go inside a lot. Of things he's got a sliding door on the side here. Very well this is Take me back to my days my mom's house used to have a kitchen flooring like this you've got the square tiles the line no tight flooring Yes it's just kind of fitting in with with the air and the company vibe I get in of cool Ok lovely should I want my feet bit wet isn't it oh let's clamber up quarterly walk small spacious that I thought it isn't it yes you know nice Yes this is all kitted out really nicely so have both of you had to do to this to make it as is now well not a lot really because it wasn't such an amazing condition when we 1st acquired it but obviously we've committed to it with everything you need if you were going off on a company holiday such as the crockery and cutlery and people bring their own bedding but apart from that they should have everything they need Ok well the mode we're in at the moment is obviously for moving so the roof is down so how far up does the roof go in here. Other than if you want to feel how I could stand up oh you sound quite calm to me and it's very simple procedure just for clips then just give it a big push and that's it the roof is pop straight shot me full had wandered around is enough to get changed etc. Can we put the roof you carry on to you do not love a child with so all these bodies busy doing that just to show how easy it is I suppose the plus of a camper van a motorhome is you can just turn up your there and ready to go as soon as you arrive you can put the kettle on a course and if you want to stop on the way you can just stop and have a cup of tea and you know you get a lot of fade so don't put beats away some peeps from people as they as they go past and it's always a talking point where you pull up at a campsite look I'm quite tall so I'm going to stand up now oh yes I can I can stand off in it which is great this fantastic So again you've got the plus there now what about bedding Where am I going to sleep with then and I sitting on the bed actually sitting on the bed yet because you can pull the engine and the bed out the 2 handles Yes down flat and then once you have the spare wheel there's a cushion that goes in there the whole thing goes out flat and then you've got your bed too but I'm assuming you know this one show birth that Bertie is actually for birth so is Bertie bigger that's the same size inside but he has a hammock that fits in the top into the puppet and then another hammer that goes across the 2 from change as well so 2 small children and to adults and it's also got a full width double wide in that one as opposed to a 3 quarter bed that would be very cozy though for a family but that we do have a new warning that clicks on outside so you can have people sleeping in the orning or you can use it for storing extra stuff and you put in a warning on the side of this yes it just clips on yeah yeah so we're obviously would provide all the instructions that you need fantastic I mean you said that you wanted to hire something yourself so. Was there an attraction had you done as a youngster had you been on caravan holidays those sorts of things we were always going to North Wales on caravan holidays. Round different sites we'd seen camp of ons and we went to the Latitude Festival with some friends to learn along and they took their guns and it was fantastic all being together been enjoying the music and sharing time sitting around in our Come thing chairs and at the something it was a conversation starter because you've got something in common with all the people of oh you have most definitely yes I mean most of the people who bring the van back are always comments and everybody comes over to them. On the roadways to them I think that gets you in the spirit as soon as you were supposed to pick the van Oh you've got to be in holiday mode there's no rushing about your holiday starts the minute you pull out the gates you've just got to be you're in the relaxed calm frame of mind and just have a nice selection John just thank you I would love to hear your stories today have you got a camper van a motor home how do you get into it let me know this morning 08000 double 65949 is the number to call b.b.c. Radio Lincolnshire travel it's not a busy morning for traffic heading into Lincoln on the Lincoln right from Bronston up towards conic hill no doubt she These are ongoing work the haying 10 right junction Tempe lights is the international command center so any call of long delays yesterday no doubt appear to be causing that problem again this morning it was a very busy as well heading in on the sleeper drive through Christ which fate not helped of course by the temple lights on blocks in lane and of course the main issue for us this morning really is flirting right across the county. Area numerous reports of standing water there as a race on the a $46.00 north a Market Rasen along the case to right as you had to tax paying more Ruskin to as well has had a flood warning issued say we're flooding possible Amana strain and whole trains at the moment fact currently at a standstill between Grantham and Duncan stuff because of an instant between you at Northgate and Retford if you. 6. Radio Lincolnshire Ann's fans while on Davis is here for man's vans and Dave the driver is here as well Dave really interesting because the day for travel Tuesday we're talking about camper vans and motorhomes you have actually got a motor home as well and yeah yeah I have yeah for my sins I've actually bought an altar trail something a bit more modern and there's actually a shower and toilet facilities I'm I made up by a tree and I say well that spoilt Ok so you mention toilet facilities you're actually sitting at the moment on the toilet facility in Betty at the moment aren't you really I does have a facility for a port a potty I think it's got to be a desperation stakes if you want to say that one with you however with the own inner side of course you just put it straight in the or and it's not so embarrassing because at the moment basically as you open the sliding door there is the compartment for the toilet so so you need to be very careful as to when and where you're using it yeah I think the best are actually part of against the walls and the ones we're looking at but again there is a facility there for it I notice you've got a gap underneath of the sink here which is where people put the call box in rather than having a fridge but you found that this actually works for people doesn't it it works better for people that tend to prevail for their food at home etc and then just bring their call box right along with you to know obviously. That they can take it with them with an actually it works a bit better than a fridge or really fridge takes a bit of maintenance or getting up to speed and they're not a lot of fish. Lighting in here I assume provided by batteries but the cooking stove is actually gas isn't it that's right yeah Gas Gas Cochran gas grill has run over them for so much as just a couple of. Trails like shutter show or other the binge on. Bacon in the morning and a bit of chosin to the grill where do you park up the Republican governor of your main meal in the pub because actually yes all you've got a barbecue with you when you can just get that going how far is Betty been worse Betty been to. Betty's b. Paris Berlin and Amsterdam also all the way around Scotland and then even as far as measuring a well as far as measuring them yes my goodness. That was a journey and a home yes yeah well it's just you know it's really up to people how far they want to go but you know the 1st I went camping we went all the way toward all spa Yes we've done that you do so and others but it doesn't matter does it because you've gone there it's a different environment the atmosphere is great water people tend to do with with better your camp of and they take you for a long weekend a week a fortnight What do they do it varies really mostly long weekends but you know people going further afield and obviously they need a bit longer time to get there to going to a festival for example they might need it for a slightly longer we've had people hiring them for their wedding we've had a couple getting gauged in the van recently and they all sent us an amazing photos and yes looks looks fantastic all decked out with bunting and confetti but Betty and Bertie tend not to go out in the winter than. No. They lack of heating etc. Really is a bit of a summer thing to be perfectly honest with you so they hate you when you drive in is very very poor and inefficient there's no heating whatsoever in the back so it's not really something for a January be very cozy and Big think do Vai's when Yeah well we do have a standalone heater that we you know you could plug in if you were at a place with the electric hookup Yeah if you're really cold as you can do that if you've got an electrical cup on the site you can actually plug this into about yet those are the extension cable underneath the seat where we are now so you just took that in and off you go yeah but your motorhome can you use are all around I can yes I tend to go away I should be going away in December and in January with it because it spoiled that's going to have everything whether we're plugged in or not as well say that's a little bit of a different extreme to Betty and Betty. Lovely to see you thank you very much Davis now I understand she's got a bit of a throaty engine so I'm wondering if I can outside might I be able to hear. Betty starting up with that be all right so let's let's hop out here get outside all right Ok just come out of the front of Bessie to see how she is and his she is then so we've got Betty. And we're being very quiet on the on the site not so we don't don't make too much noise are going to sneak off the site as quietly as we can. And I think the rest of the campsite know we're leaving I think I think they know it's time for us to depart thank you both very much indeed if you've got some stories to share with us today about camping and caravanning also about motorhomes and camper band you can call us now 08000 double 65949 there's here Betty again. Don't bring me down here on b.b.c. Radio Lincolnshire bit of a different travel to stay for you today we're talking camper vans and motorhomes have you got one did you hire one and thought no this is this is the life I'm going to buy one and then you gradually sort of improved or got different ones different size vehicles those sorts of things Paul says it is a dream to own one No he says I spent part of my honeymoon in one and never banged my head so much in the space of 24 hours very romantic unless your more than 5 feet tall unless it rains unless you need the loo and unless your incapable of filling 12 hours of the day playing board games when it rains all come on it's no different really to going camping or caravan anything like that is it really Paul good to hear from you know 8000 double 65949 camper vans and motorhomes your love for them Alan says you can get electric steering on them you can buy a kit off the Internet apparently I've had my camper for 30 years I've been down to the Autobahn and around Holland Belgium and France love it Alan nice to hear from you as. Thank you for that well the motor home and caravan show gets underway today at the any c. In Birmingham over the next 5 days thousands of people expected to see the latest vans available t.v. Presenter All right you know him from watch dog and rogue traders in one show and all those sorts of things he's a camper van lover and ambassador for the caravan and motorhome club I caught up with him earlier and asked where he caught the bug I always tell the earliest thing Melvin was that is reported to me that my brother when I was a baby my big brother 3 years older used to say I wish we had a caravan Mat I wish we had a caravan like this is this is a family legend one of those things so that's gone down in our family folklore and then when I was a 1314 my parents got an old transporter t 2 I think it's called the Viking So this was a Volkswagen which had a top that popped up and inside you had room for no fewer than 6 people. In the room and Mum and Dad downstairs it was crazy I couldn't believe it it's like no you're never going to get 6 people in there but yes you could and you know you could have your tea in it you could sleep in it you could watch t.v. In it we even did that that was mad and we went everywhere in it and I just thought this is the best the nicest thing is that you drive somewhere you stop and you pull on the handbrake and as a driver you just turn left and that's your kitchen and I just I've never got over that feeling of stopping putting the handbrake up and sticking the kettle on I just honestly it doesn't you can put me in the Ritz I don't care it's not going to get any better than that and of course camper vans motor homes that they've changed a great deal over the years anyway that they're full of luxuries They've even got heating in these days yes there is. I think some of them have hot water and showers and you know miracles you know you can wake up in the morning without condensation on the windows you you wake up warm and cozy and ready to go for another day I think they have really moved on an awful lot you know when you get to the point where you can start the heating 20 minutes before you arrive back in your caravan if you're down the pub and you've got an app on your phone you click on it and it says you know please toasty at my home and you get back and it's like you never left it is properly in fact it's probably nicer than my home in many. Of the n.a.c. Now looking around at these these fantastic vehicles and caravans and thinking No this is actually nicer than where I live well I notice that our cricket club in the village where a lot of people turn up with their motorhomes and camper vans it's all year round they're on the new year and Christmas yeah they are because you can I mean mine's a pop up you can stick a little cozy top on that but then the caravans themselves they've worked out insulation and they said look if people are going to invest in these things let's make sure they can use them all round and I know people that go skiing in there as well so if you can handle you know the Alps then that's pretty much you can handle anything I think it's all doable now which you need you know if you're going to spend 5060 grand on a vehicle or you know 20 or 30 on a caravan it needs to work all year round otherwise you're not going to get a value back from it what about picking a decent site how do you go about doing that. Well for me you know I always start with the caravan and motorhome club because they they have you know they make a guarantee to their members that when you turn up there are more than the basics there are going to be things that you can expect to work you know your shower block is going to be pristine it's going to be there's going to be hot water whenever you need it you know all of the things that you need for an enjoyable holiday Are there a lot of them are open year round as well so are we staying there there are you have access as well to members and to guys who work for the club who have all done it so they know in advance and they can advise you and tell you where you need to go and if you start with that for people that have never done it before if you start with their advice is invaluable You can also determine the water and you can you can hire from them before making that big investment so try before you buy and that makes a lot of sense for people because it's a lot of money I do find when you're on campsites motorhome sites whatever it is people tend to be fairly friendly because everybody's in the same boat if the weather's not very good you got a topic of conversation that morning haven't you there friend late without getting up in your business and that's only slowly you know I do this a lot and I spend a lot of time in hotels and it's really lovely when you make friends and then by the 3rd day you go sometimes you go he says he said the table again I'm not sure I like this anymore and you know you're going to be there for a fortnight. And sometimes you just want your own space that's what holiday really is isn't it so for you to be with your partner with your family and just decompress and sort out all the business before you go back to work and schools and the rest of it you need your space to be able to communicate a campsite is great because if you see people you can nod and say hello but you know you're going back to your little life support machine. You can just you can shut the door and it's all yours if you like are you on the lookout for anything in particular at the show that you're looking to upgrade No I'm not on fully equipped to be honest I can't get anything bigger because it won't fit in the garridge I can afford it if I want to. I'm really happy with what I've got as well you know I've got a v.w. California and it just works I use it for work I drive up here and then when summer comes around and you know when my Mrs wants to get away for the weekend then they're ready to go so you know it's. Really couldn't be a better match at the moment but I'm not kidding there are some glorious things sure there are amazes me whenever I've had a look around at some of these events at the price of some of them though but they are really luxuries have you got a motor home or a camper van is this something you dream of having maybe you went on a holiday a hard one for a week and thought This is the thing for me it was so good you enjoyed it so much you decided to buy 108000 double 65949 is the number of b.b.c. Radio link you should travel. To looking credibly Slifer traffic heading into Lincoln this cheese day morning on that Haneke road Sorry along the Lincoln right you kind of hail long delays there you had to from the bronze to direction it's all because of these ongoing works not far from the. Lights not the international Bomber Command Center cooler than those delays as you head into the city past the printing it was affecting traffic heading out now along South Park Avenue and the main issue of course this morning is flooding right across the county. Badly affected this morning so we're flooding a risk on Man a Street High Street in Chestnut Street as it's the north of Market Rasen on the a 46 you have 3 clocks being more going to Lane still closed heading out to Newark as well on the I one Southland cause of floodwater at the turn off the Fernwood and there are still major problems on the train services. One at a standstill on both whole trains and Northeastern railway services between Grantham and Duncan. Instead between new North Gate Bridge if you can't say to school I 15751 double 6 I'm Louisa Gail b.b.c. Radio Lincolnshire travel from Skegness Skag in the sixty's and seventy's was actually lovely to go to professional dancing I got asked to go to Holland to dance on their equivalent of the top of the park to being the face of an international disco hates I never met a producer or the singer I was mining for fronting a chart topping Dockery they decided to call us Doris to independence is that sounded quite frankly to going full circle and returning to Lincolnshire you know rock and sit outside the Gunderson to pass on this beautiful music Funkytown Skegness to Holland I'm back again the story of Debbie Jo. I mean it was weird and it was bizarre and it was a 980 s. I don't regret it at all it's on the You Tube on b.b.c. Radio. Let's talk about motorhomes and camper vans although I think this is something slightly different Ken's in love fellow Ken Hello. Oh I do apologize. Near one of you got Ken I've got to dismantle that if you want slot that that baffles people. In the drive now it's a caravan board on for. It's on top of a pick up. So what happens is the pickup drive underneath it to you you have to back it very gently and slowly underneath and then wind the handles and the caravan body then sits on the pickup you put some clamps are at the side and there it is how I don't even know you had that Ken. I painted a long time a long time we were all out one pick up. Replaced it with another pickup and discovered that the Cabo the new pickup was slightly 'd higher than the previous one and so I had to put wooden blocks underneath the caravan building so it would fit on the new pickup so how old will the actual caravan part of it being do you think it's back in the eighty's 'd 980 or so some just trying to get my head round this again not to look up a photograph of it so so the caravan element of it sits when it when it's not on the pick up it sits on 4 legs does it it's on 4 legs in my drive Ok And then when you want to take it is usual that way I think we I think one of the grandchildren one time came and says chemistry. And slip slip did it while it was on the legs and when you want to take it somewhere we. Used to go out to the south of France with it able to tow a boat behind we get to the campsite. The boat of course said only most caravan. Legs under the caravan body off and then I could go off in. 'd the boat on a trailer behind. Find the sleeper. Launch to go so we had to use what we were on holiday it sounds idyllic It sounds wonderful and the plus of that is you could go off with the pickup and get supplies as well to take back a caravan and boat couldn't you how wonderful I'm going to look up some photographs of that Ken thank you for sharing that with us I've not come across that before a dismantle motor caravan to the caravan element the sleeping bit goes on the back of a pick up and this is on legs and then when you want to move it to slide the pick up underneath put it on and off you go to class great idea isn't it jeans in Boston hello Jane what have you got Jane. Bailey and we can go Ok and how or how long have you had a caravan then. I think caravanning think 40 is the modest What is the attraction of it for you what do you love about it when you go away want when you want without having to look anywhere we get around it and we just we caravan any anywhere we don't bother to do anything that stops is that if the site is flooded and all year round then so will you camp in the winter Oh yes yeah we're going to culling unless we can bowl you'll be in my village. But it does amaze me actually when I go past the cricket club and all weathers all year round there are people there with the camper vans and the caravans and I suppose it's because you've got heating and everything in there now is that right absolutely everything you could live in it yeah on it because it's too cramped. Freedom and that we been away 3 weeks at a time quite comfortably how lovely and 0 packed already to go do you leave it packed and ready to go so you can just go out to Friday and drive off nor Alair it and how we got there is in between we were made in like last week and.
