So range is Islands might not be the 1st thing that springs to mind but a new plate reveals the hidden history of the. So the my 270 s. Well. It's inspired by a story. I only heard about it because when I was a kid I used to ask my mother to tell me about the story of her me in my father both my parents came to London from Ireland. From Catherine and they worked in the hotels in the West End and I was always fascinated as a kid about the stories about how they met and men she told me that once that got engaged to his mother came over from Ireland to meet her and she was quite a matriarch I think she had 10 children and apparently she said to my mother I came to my marriage with a diary and cows but you've come to yours empty handed. Growing up in London that just felt like a culture that was worlds away really from the suburbs of London in the seventy's when I was growing up but you know the range Majesty it happened in Ireland right up until the seventy's so my grandmother did have an arranged marriage but I didn't actually I met my grandmother once when I was about 4 so I didn't get a chance to talk to her about how she experienced it but a great shooter can you for. I don't think it would have gone down very well either really. Best not to mention it I mean you heavily of course for the play but with the fact that really surprised at spirits when you look at how island was in those days it wasn't actually a surprising as you might think because Ireland's very much all about the land it's very important to keep the land in the family name I mean that's why when you go you know names tend to stay in regions because historically they always left the lands to the eldest son in the family name. So in a way it kind of made sense as a way of doing things you know the brides had to be young obviously because the whole purpose of it was to have children carry on the family name and quite often I'm not sure why but they did leave it quite late for the male farmers to find a bright so it's not surprising as you might think. It's actually a comedy. How do we. Like this you know it's it's a serious. Well it doesn't mean the Irish are famous for that Blackie. It's more of a dark humor than a sort of you know light hearted comedy really but yeah there's a lot of weight in there I so it's not like it's not like a harrowing experience and you know there's a bit of a dark thing in there because the 1st 2 axis are in 1956 in London so there's a bit of joy having going on and then we contrast that with traditional Irish music we're very lucky to have just teamed up with some most he saw 8 musicians actually and Joe Pew they're going to be playing some life at the show for us so as the audience come in and in the interval so should be really good nights this is all about the changing face of island. Definitely definitely it's a story of one girl who decides to rebel so it's like a story of rebellion too and you know the impacts of rebellion so one girl decides to rebel against her family's wishes and about the impact that has on everyone around her because you know back in the fifty's life was more about the family isn't it rather than the individual and I think nowadays it's all about the individual isn't it and you know all these selfies and. Blogs and all of that social media culture is about preaching personal brands but in the fifty's it was about family and doing what's right for the family say I kind of wanted to show how people had fewer choices in those days we came to hear from people who experienced arranged marriages well for the new book What were you hoping to hear from them I'd like to hear stories from people because it was a subject that wasn't really discussed not just women who had arranged marriages you know men to men I know of wanted to have had an arranged marriage and we want to open up a conversation so it's like a cross cultural conversation you know it's not just the Asian communities you've had arranged marriages it was the Irish communities too and apparently it happened initially as well up until fairly recently so you know traditionally a lot of cultures did arrange marriage that way and the romantic way of meeting people is fairly recent So I just thought it would be really interesting to open up a conversation with people from lots of different cultures about arranged marriages so we'd love to talk to people and hear their stories. It went really well in London it was a shorter version of the play. I've written a new act just for the Liverpool Irish festival actually say in London we got really good reviews we got 4 star reviews and we had it set in 1956 in London and then we saw Fast forward to 986 to show the characters later in life and the impact that their decisions has had on them but for Liverpool I've written a whole set in island and what I wanted to do there was to show how different life was in rural islands in the fifty's compared to London the gap was huge in those days I think I think islands changed massively since the fifty's but I just wanted to show you know how different it was and how come. London for people in the fifty's was just such a different world I really think it's a good play for Liverpool because you know the Irish have. Such a strong part to play in Liverpool so really excited about coming to Liverpool with it really. Sounds good you know it's called blog and it's part of the Liverpool artist festival and some of the capstone are Monday and Tuesday a half 7 and they've You got stories from the train for the book you can email or. Which it surely must still there but it was there for a while I mean you never heard of the show wonder does it still go that's hype in the light and I'm not really had that you know as a sort of business if you like just like I'm from a soldier or something we're talking about the polar opposite end of the scale the top 10 scariest movies there's a little in the paper today and you know what's sad I've actually got all these on d.v.d. There was a really good idea because there's nothing more it even asked me than the empty hotel to think I was Carlitos in college or know see give me the creeps you know but that was number one actually was named number one number 2 is from 1960. Psycho right oh yeah if you know I mean yeah well I think number 2 the original was great and you know I'm so envious of anyone who was in the scene and doesn't know the twist Oh right Ok because they've still got the joy to come you mean Absolutely yeah you know I had a good idea for Dragons' Den but I was talked out of it that you put like psycho on here in the cinema then you hypnotized people to forget the and if they can watch it again they go in and the you know you don't know how many times have you seen it loads and I mean what I've seen that the the remade that nothing can quite beat the 1st time of watching nothing at all the terror I felt sitting there with me on the couch really that's the only as I were also having this but they really made it frame for frame Yeah white sample a classic number 3 paranormal activity which is good for number 3 like Poltergeist that number 5 really. Alien at number 6 always it always makes the list they have you know 28 Days Later was a good one it was set in the modern day London with make sure. Everyone's gone there's only the zombie thing but they can roam all the way normally does oh yeah I've seen this whole premise of that I haven't seen the film but you know honestly they're all like you say both which makes it even more terrifying you normally there were like them on only you can outrun them you know get a head start yeah you could even stand. There Like most foul. You know so 28 Days Later the evil dad said back to 981 at number 8 on a good film the hottest one for there was a bit of good story about about a haunted house call what lies beneath my school film it's not you know it's not gory or nothing like that just a good story beyond it as well Ok I'm glad it's on the list and The Omen number 10 and so they go that the top 10 scariest movies of the show many more and I could talk all day about ones nowhere near that list that's how to fight. Some of it's personal isn't it yeah they scare them more than in some films came out another thing the changeling is a film that terrified me and snarly about real promise because he said the same. There was about him and what was his name to follow in their medical matter think about the many. Events this big old houses a musician Yeah and once this big old I was and he has this incredible bang and all the time I think I've seen the changing Yeah yeah I really think tried to forget about it you'll see Scott his name it but a good film you know you don't you want to so now I really don't do horror very favorite film. Because Sean put me on the spot that. I put the clock on the. Field to film a scene the most votes so we won't like it I don't want to go on for 00. 00 No one did you rest maybe yeah you know what it's not laughs. In the meantime to be using yet I'm not saying it's my favorite film and I. Want to high lots of lines from that we can have a role. In that with a flip of the giblets in the film yet. It will lead the way. That we. See we're on to my level now. I'm not saying is my favorite film you said they. Try out. To our. Spoke to his biographer the book's out. That's the yardstick you've got what I've got to go. Sean the scariest movie for me was what I what I went into Baby Jane says Paula might not was really called that but Davis called Stoff Ok you made Mona Misty a family one for the fun day I was really enjoyed It's However towards the end of the day the day along with all those when encouraged to do shorten the wouldn't normally do something which in some cases is breaking the law so I'm afraid you never got that once a day is going to be carried over them actually thrilled to say until tomorrow so I don't think about that one overnight I mean you can go back to go back to it's a motto. Ok Sandi Toksvig So next after men out with. Nothing. Wrong with. Salt you'll. Have a strange slate of. News. For me and me with. My morning. Mean. We've. Followed follow. This line. Of a song to. Now the show that lets you lot from Len at the same time is back some on a Sunday talk big is now well settled in the host a Q Why and then you said he showcases that I said oh now the ominous klaxon will of course never be far away as always I'm thrilled to say Sandy joins us this morning. I'm extremely well for my age how you are really busy is well. Thought of a busy difficult at all now fully settled into the low m Q I am absolutely but I have to be honest I was at home from the beginning because I've been a guest so often so I knew the set Well I knew the production team love the format so just sit in a different channel yeah is it difficult to take over from someone who's been there from day one though does not do is that a bit of a task for you know I you know you have to just be yourself Tony you can't be worried about nice things and I love the team the team are amazing John Lloyd who invented Q I has been phenomenally supportive I'll be honest with you of course I had a few knows before the cameras rolled for the very 1st time but soon as the red light went on I thought you know what I can do this this is fun why do you think it's become so popular because you know which one most of the war it's you know it's broke records for you know viewing figures and all things for knowledge and comedy thrown in yeah but it's that it's that thing it's like it's like education by stealth you know you sort of force the teachers it's been a bit like this so that you can actually have a really good laugh and then and then stuff stays in your hand because think well I didn't know that that is really interesting so I give you want to give you an example do you know what the medical oath is that doctors take you know it's cool it's called critical yet the Hippocratic oath so in America that's been replaced Do you know what the name of the oath is that they now take in America. This is going to scream you're going to love this is called The Oath of lasagna and. It was modernized in 164 by a doctor who was called Louis lasagna No thank you love that I thought that because he never minced the words when you give new bad news doctors say Let It Be off and running. This is good you know what I was thinking as well want to sing about 15 to one I thought you know it was different but I thought that was difficult to follow with you because you played it straight down the line did me. Yeah absolutely I suppose but I put in a few more jokes you know but I think a lot of and they looked only you know something thank you very much appreciate it when I Love You I Love You on the Bake Off I think you will know love got a great chemistry he is one of the nicest guys ever going to say this because he's all rock n roll but he's one of the nicest gentlest gentleman I have ever worked with but I mean it's it was a great For my part I think I think it's better now with a good strong woman to be honest well that's very kind of you I think is is wonderful and pull Hollywood is not quite the stuff. That you might imagine he's a mischievous monkey you know what though somebody was emotional the other maggots you know he went when you got to give the bad news to Liam Yeah very bad Oh it's very emotional Well he's a wonderful young man and he worked so hard and you get very involved we spend a lot of time together you see an hour and a quarter of us having spent many many many many hours and days together. And the care that people put into what they're doing is phenomenal so you know it's I'm I'm blessed you know. I am thankful for all 15 to when I do shows where the team can so much that you can't help but get involved and I know I guess well we have a book of the month you know on the program where we go on this month that you have a piece in queues. Yes good fun good fun I mean really good reviews Well we went to the local library they recommended it and I have people have been going on the read . Thank you very much that's very kind of an operational You know what I was laughing out loud when I read about your accident when you said you tried to copy c. Lead Johnson. People you know people don't understand that I grew up with an American accent and didn't come here until I was 14 right and I had to really think American accent and I went to boarding school and nobody would speak to me because of my American accent so one night after 6 weeks of never speaking to me we watched close encounter a brief encounter with silly. Johnson I thought well I'll talk like that which is why it's not like I'm trapped in a black and white film but when I've had a couple of bad beverages. I still sound American. What are your favorite things to do because you're busy writing books and stuff like that where do you most at home . You know I'm so lucky I like everything that I do I enjoy it I enjoy all of it I like the range and variety of it we've just literally just finished in the back of tents we're about to start the preparation for the letter p. For Q I and I'm off to Glasgow to film 70 more episodes of $15.00 to $1.00 so all of it is good fun when you will hold in the 2 feet but I can feel musical as well what a life I was that sadly bit the dust and you know what happens with shows like that it's raising the money for these things that's Ok that's a business you try some things it doesn't work and the next I want you to fix that that's what I'm going. Home and. I'm a woman I'm feeling I get up in the morning write a musical to a show in the afternoon something else in the evening why did you do much bacon that's all no I mean had time I just moved house and we haven't found the oven yet . So you do your bacon on the bake off and say you know what's the worst thing the thing that people don't know is that behind the base of the tent that you can see there's a full kitchen where home economists are making perfect versions of what's being cooked in the tent to make sure it can be done you know in the time and in the temperature the place is just a chewed a buffet of amazing food that you have to avoid to load the thing about the bake off as I didn't realize it was the technical name in the bit too much from what's is on the last episode so difficult to look at it looks relatively simple if you don't do it with me well that's like any of the things you know people everybody thinks they can make a pizza or everybody thinks they can make a very cake and I'm afraid there's more to it and actually pull Hollywood on the science of why baking sometimes works and why it doesn't and there's probably some good stuff in the f.a.q. . See how to make it all work together you do would be looking forward to the new city Sunday thank you thank you for all you've given the so far the most more to come thanks for your time today somebody take a lovely. Coming in the city center gallium exactly thought the same as well. As it Lesley Joyce says Barbara No it's not is it definitely follow from that Gads says Marzio in Brum but I know it's not is it Millicent Martin there's a name from the past says on the over them with this well I can just glance over through the glass there the jam and there's a famous films of to say it's a double whammy it's a double whammy unless any of these are right or numbly now. Says Mary No it's not County by. Pamela Stephenson we've had a number of times in fact Joomla feel we've already and this is Chris. And all them off the palm of them this is all wrong I'm absolutely thrilled to say it will be carried over til tomorrow your poll be easily tomorrow ball Beazley is looking after the show when I'm away. On a course on the way tomorrow so I won't be here Bo and Paul Beasley and say founder Paul is a great man he's a good laugh and I'm sure he'll be looking after them quizzes like that his own so it's almost a show so mama with their poll Beasley. I don't know what's a play a song go frightening to death well next piece what you think yeah I'm song All right some people like I play those on the stock it won't look for the set piece if they say that's going to really fly and he's not the. Now this next piece is for anyone who loves a bit of a bit of a scale that's a bit harder and I certainly do when you show Liverpool met the pride well the set and all Victorian police station Need I say more while open to speak to Frankie a man from the spectacle theatre company so 18th of the spill he holiday is an experience is all about. I'm trying t. On the creative director of spectacles the company to tell us about the theater company Festival Yes So myself and my God I've done it with we graduated from Liverpool you know. Decided that we wanted to so it's company we've been going for about a year this is our collaboration with street Ltd We like to do pieces that a little bit different and play with your expectations a little bit take out of the theater. Which is that maybe that will find that there isn't a place that you might not find the you know yeah I was really on at where we were in the Bridewell calories which is just opposite the Royal Court me I owned by a group of lovely artists. Kind of take over for the week yet where we've created saw story Liverpool and I asked the price well from the research that was done to the building and the people who were kept here whether it was overnight or 1st as it's been the police station for costs to 300 use and 6 hundreds now we're here. Yeah should you show is your name what you do so I'm Matthew I'm the technical director of a spectacle for a company so this is just born out of the love of films and all things we do strange and yet to some extent we like kind of the potential of scaring an audience it's the sun which that you can do with a building like this is someone who Congers and knocks and chronics and the sun which character that you can bring out it's got very creepy atmosphere after Doc when the previous 3 do you want to make sure you after dark it gets even worse so it was something kind of we really wanted to do it was Spawn from a piece from. He did about a year ago actually but we've adapted it to fit into the space that we're in now we both really like kind of horror and scaring people I particularly like kind of how house of horror. Frankie likes pretty much everything. We kind of wanted to draw on that passion for the heritage of these kind of had to meld and we used to live just up the road and have to walk past on the way to university often we didn't know if this building and it was great when someone causing contact with the current owners it allowed us to kind of find this hidden gem that we've always kind of wondered about but never kind of been able to get into it and we wanted to share that with people in an interesting white. Way giving them an opportunity to have a guided tall around some of the building that they wouldn't normally say and to scatter them in the process and tell them ghost stories about the history of film and. I do for the history lesson frighten the life out of them look. We have nothing it's like where we are we're not just on their story we're kind of why you need to live through you become part of it was not in the. What did you do what you think when you finally go into the building to think wow she had to we were like we was this is the 1st place we actually saw look at the venue and I remember walking in with my just being completely in awe it was exactly what we were. Like he said lots of hidden in Crimea you know places that we can hide as well without trying to get too much away it was still being kept completely alive by the people who run in it but it's got the aesthetic you know yeah. Yeah so how does the show we're. Obviously no plots going to work for the people who come along and the story goes there the bride. Is being so you know there's a lot of kind of new developments around here and we wanted to ask the question what if the ice never moved and what they lost in the complications that might have so your tree is a buyer to the Bridewell and it's currently owned in austerity by a very wealthy very greedy businessman us no respect for the building no respect for what came before and you introduce these characters as you've been taking on the building and some stories come out along the way Julianne a lovely historian character is really enthusiastic. And he tells you this ghost story about a woman who is haunting the bridewell and as you have then taken through to the cells the story starts to come to life. And I mean yeah that's about as I think about it no yeah so how are we going to dress the building because I mean it's broad daylight it's a gallery the room we're in and I know the shelves downstairs are being used for all the things we're going to take a while to dress it we're trying to keep a lot of the character of the Belden as it is already got bits of flight in padding and areas that look a little bit run down we don't want to dress it and make it into something that isn't. Going anywhere couldn't exactly so what we're doing is we're kind of just adopting the space to fit the salary of the men at the gallery is full of some wonderful art which is going to be taken down and there's going to just be bits of it kind of just went against the walls as if they've been taken down and left most of the rest of the Belden is going to be left. Out in the cells where decorate. The cells would. I've looked but not entirely in the same it's almost like it's bleeding out from the epicenter of what happens towards the end. So there's a lot of all posters like rewards for missing watch. Someone who left a baby outside a pub and things like local Liverpool history. So far things lie the White Star Line Q not lying and as well in the gallery we're going to have loads of pictures of the bride well through time. To look back and see what would life. Oh yeah definitely those pictures from when the royal would be in battle. And all the bits of Liverpool different times as well so it's a really exciting opportunity kind of like history and you want to explore all the interesting sites. And you know what it says Please wish before we're just in case you need to go yeah. Yeah there is a very old boat and we're very conscious of keeping people safe there making them feel like they are not. Now there are several bits where you will need to be insensible because you have to move quite quickly away from something to. Show. Children you know I mean we have 16 plus on it and if you have any kind of you know accessibility needs you might find it quite difficult although we've tried to be as inclusive as we come because of exactly we were going to vote you can book your ticket to kick or to search for us either by Liverpool honest or on the fair we are on the edge Festival which is run by Hope Street limited and there's so many other amazing performances as well we are getting quite close to selling out on a couple of times a week it's Thursday the 19th Friday 20th and 21st day night we have an 8 o'clock show in Friday night we have a 6 and an 8 o'clock show and Saturday we have a 6 that's showing 8 o'clock on a midnight showing Yeah so that's going to be really excited about Midnight Yeah. Well this really is a really good way of bringing theater to everyone isn't it absolutely as much that I'm completely history in it and for me it's about inviting people to this space that they wouldn't otherwise come to you by telling them that it's a ghost story and it's going to be so I mean exciting meeting new but also that getting to know the history of the boat and as well great to see if Thank you very much and you thanks very much thank you so much please Michael Matz. I tell you what's going to be good God your fans here it's a little cool moment at the Bridewell it's on so nice at 8 o'clock from one of my to half 6 and 8 o'clock on this Saturday half 68 o'clock and midnight you can get tickets from ticket quarter dot co dot u.k.
