Sports James Grant who spends a lot of time working with the balmy army that's not a bad way to spend the year as a said good little gigs of London isn't it someone's got to do it they're all home with the World Cup coming exciting times ahead big year ahead I'm sure we're talking all about it but yeah my mind's fully focused on me we've also got Peter Della Panna the cricket journalist at E.S.P.N. Krink info he specializes in U.S. Cricket and these insults it believe it a long way from home it's a that you have thank you for having me and yeah it's a pleasure to be here what brings you to sulfa Pete Well fairly simple reason I'm married to a British woman so I spend quite a decent amount of my time here in Manchester that's where my wife is from but I travel back and forth to the US quite regularly for various cricket events that occur in fact I was in Florida just about a week and a half ago covering a tournament there that featured Andre Russell and various other West Indies and U.S. Players so it keeps me busy and here's your 2nd cricket team after the US. I've got a soft spot for all associate very good so I get around to cover and quite a lot of associate of events and I actually spend quite a lot of time covering the Scotland team I take the train regularly from Manchester up to Edinburgh covered Scotland and I was there this summer when and. I wouldn't see any Scotland beat England in the famous Happy Days 1st victory for Scotland to bring the. Oh yeah you know and I've been doing that cover the Scot home matches for about 4 summers now so that was quite a momentous occasion with Kal McLeod century Well lucky for us that you all nearby thanks for being in the studio with isn't from Brisbane we have Jonathan North All right have the upcoming book ruling the world the story of the 1992 Cricket World Cup Jonathan not really happy time for Australian cricket fans. It's not recent at the moment I mean I think it's been an Englishman it's quite a good place to be at the moment you enjoying it. Wow It's difficult now I've kind of taken a neutral standpoint there's no need for that. But no I do get a little bit of pleasure to be honest I can remember the the Aussies coming over in the night beginning and want to do spanking So there's a there's a slight pleasure but not too much and in Melbourne we have here in Iran a who's an Indian cricket broadcaster who's also involved in initiatives like supporting women in sport I mean as we look forward to 2019 you know is this going to be the year that India dominates world cricket wins the World Cup Please say yes . Absolutely you were in one and you had to do well by the way that ended when he 18 but I know we created they had at Melbourne Cricket Ground and this probably is the only time that India sees themselves on cusp of doing something that no I don't mean cricket team has done probably winning the series in Australia so that's something to look forward to in the new We are starting the New York with that test but of course train I mean Walcott now that's going to be way crucial because all your lawyers that's the last time that we could well see most of my interest in the one in the blues that he's led India all over so many are sure there's plenty to look forward to playing in cricket in 2900 S. Well let's look back now to India's victory against Australia she was. I was pretty sure I was she was so I was how can you just love that well the inability of Australians batsmen to compile big scores prove costly on the Melbourne pitch which required players to bat for long periods to have any chance of prospering since the final test of last summer's Ashes Australia's batsmen have scored only one century in mind games with no play averaging above 40 the numbers in The Shield also make for sobering reading with few players in state ranks averaging about 40 in 1st class cricket because they're missing Smith and Warner they have another 3 months of their 12 month ban to set before they're eligible for international selection and that they cannot come soon enough for the Australian captain whose last full of his 6 tests there are quite a few ingredients that go into good batting one is technical one is mental one is tactical one's emotional good batsman draw on different elements of each of those buckets to craft an innings and I thought tactically the Ozzies lacked the ability to sum the conditions up rotate the strike. On ways of putting pressure on the in the involved that doesn't mean playing big shots but certainly maybe changing a guard getting at a you crazy getting back in your crazy little things that can tactically change the momentum of the guy that's formal as a cricketer Ed Cowan on the problems that they're facing Jonathan is this the worst Australian but things lined up that we've seen I think it is for certain for a long while sort of looking at the averages you know you know David Warner still 2nd in Indiana which is in August he's not applied since March I think that speaks volumes I think the big trees that were. A sort of hybrid over the cracks that have been there for quite a while with people like Marco Clark Erin or C. N N And there's just not the players coming through at the moment you know where they're not coming through well that aren't very good question and I think you know you look at sort of the Sheffield Shield this year and the potential is there you know there's a lot will cost be. Sang up well you had the right around for the games and. It would be difficult to argue that they should get a chance but conversely you look at what they're doing at the moment and it's just not working and yet they're assisting with choirs the you know filing all the time you know Sean Marsh option has a lot of discussion about margin only has some good knocks but you look at the last 12 months and he seems just not scoring too many runs at all or you know in the answer for the 4th test is to bring Maurice Lima Shane and that just seems you know expect to make speaks volumes Jonathan James there Insall for it how I gently or I just just made him pay me basically admitted that he needs to bring Smith and Warner back in Disney as quick quick as he can and that was is pretty much what he said straight away after that the fee in the Boxing Day Test was in it you know you can't you can't you can't disagree without those cats can you really James I mean you know the numbers show that you know without thinking Warner that they're really they're really not I want to score big scores and put terms under pressure you know I think I know that in the recent win just sort of sort of mask the larger problem there after an encrypted Scott of the moment the air and her reminds her of that are you feel but I just think you know from any team in the world you could take 2 players out of that side and they would struggle and if you took Pajaro and Kohli out please don't. See it as the kind of headache that you know it would cause a headache wouldn't that if you took those plays and that's what the loss was happening with Smith or more to be taken as well supposin How many do you think that also left that lets the of these are maybe not that good but this is probably the best ever Indian pace attack isn't. But Absolutely and look at the kind of performance that they're put up who would I 90 S. Who have taught that you know and I would have bowling line up which would convincing them consistently pick up 20 wickets and the kind of football means that you've seen off the sporting line up taken about 136 wickets in a yard that's the most number weakest of the bases has taken for India and they also That's pretty much all can run singles the best bowling line up that you've got and credit where it's due to the coaching staff as well you know we've seen the coaching staff make a lot of mistakes were Peter Peter of time in terms of the playing selection that has been done in terms of a lot of technical tactical errors that we've seen through the support stuff coming to but over a period of time the kind of warning line up that we've locked it's clear nominal and created to be in the bowling code but I don't know consistently sort of put through a lot of codes in place when the players are not playing there's a specific workload being done for the players to manage their calendars and ensure that for big tournament like series in Australia most of the bowlers are already so that's something that's being worked on and the results are pretty much everybody to see what the kind of performance that he has put up and going back to is this the best bowling line up Yes Currently I do think and come to think of it just treat them right now he's the best player best bowler in world cricket I would reckon and look at that he's just played 9 Tests so he's got a long future ahead and there seems to be a very good bowling line up and as I mentioned the kind of performance that we saw at Melbourne that would give Indian this Indian team huge booster of confidence because they're not one in Melbourne they now have a chance to sort of win a series in Australia which northern India has done so many young I was going to say you know usually Indians you know you have Harold the batsman Yeah right this is about about same than it is about ngs I mean I really like him I think he's good in the summary look dangerous. Of quick reaction as. Yeah he's good he's going to be. He's going to be a serious player and I think if you're going to get a bowler who's heralded on the same levels as Kohli and he could be a no give him in the 23 Tests and that's what India needs really is you know since Kapil DAV had shown up but not really a great fast bowler Peter cannot bring you in here because when you watch the Aussies play now do you think do you think the US could beat them. Would be every quite an event they would have and I think on the bowling side one of the interesting subplots that's developed out of this series in particular so much focus has been on the failures of the Aussie batting but if you look at the bowlers the somebody like Mitchell Starc who's been not nearly as effective as he was a year ago and there's been a lot of speculation now about how much of an impact was the alleged ball tampering and was it truly just a one off what happened in South Africa because the swing the movement all the. Variations that take you or somebody like Stark every we vanished kind of in quite a short period of time yeah I believe myself you know what you know. Well you put you Porter's nicely on to this particular issue and let's just have a delve back and remember the ball tampering incident. Kavin Bancroft has got something in his pocket and it looks like that paid back sure enough to need to use Untied States and granules from the rough patches and with trying to pull condition the latest to create a new better I'm not proud of what's happened to not remember the thing is disappointing and I was trying to say and I'm going to do is just so blithely stupid immaturity naivety could go on sorry I'm going to put money. On a compilation and going got the young kid who's playing games I test match to do that you know does it as a lady somebody to do something you're not willing do you so it's not a under pressure decision the way you might get a decision and premeditated and it's just not acceptable to strike the selloffs top of the cricketing sporting world to. Do it you just don't do it I'm pretty sure that was going on throughout the Ashes but it wasn't the reason in the last book I was pretty sure that's been going on for quite a while if you treat your actions are going to result in Darren Smith and David want to have been banned for 12 months from international and domestic cricket Skookum bankrupt suspended for 9 months I don't want to use their own words but cheating is certainly one of them that is pro with Barclays in the circumstances go to the polls go through strength put those in a trust challenge the white male but. Jonathan when when this happened I think there was a lot of people who felt that David Warner would never play for Australia again now looking at the way the team's batting do you think he will come back him straight away. I don't think there's any other choice but to bring want to back in but I do question long that's going to last because this clearly this claim problem to train . And Warner probably Bancroft and Warner as well and so on the back of the interviews that can adequately and want to quite incensed by the content until it's been my to Sky. And I you know we also talked about the lack of batting ability I mean can you not bring him back and have. You know much more of a position like England cricket that we can and it was so long that it's clearly talented but might be using that is good for the team ethic in the team dynamic How many do you think that if and it's very difficult question but if Warner and Smith were in this Australian side would India still be to one up 2 to go I don't think it's just one or 2 players that make a difference if you look at the Indian batting line up in the 1st test to the 2nd Test and to the M.C.G. Destatte it is something that probably Australia could have had a psychological edge because knowing the kind of well build up that the Australian team has had and this was pretty much the force test that they were playing off the ball tampering sky know that happened in South Africa so there was a lot of pressure but I guess it's time that everybody looks beyond what's happened to Australia and domes over there mentally dady or hide behind those excuses and accept that you know they have been beaten and they've been beaten by a better team and I strongly believe that the results would not have been any different if there was a Smith or a one on the D. Maybe they would have got better scores but I'm sure the nimble O's are confident enough and competed enough to get there because as well Peter that the ball tampering incident was was a sports story that was covered across the globe what did people in the states make of it did they get much coverage. It was viewed more as a kind of a peculiarity I guess everything about cricket is viewed as peculiarity in the US but just from the the the furor that was generated in this instance because it wasn't as an incident of cheating say in the sense of or corruption in the sense of match fixing where you're intentionally trying to lose here these guys were flouting the rules to try and gain an edge to win and I guess in a lot of us sports. If you're trying to win gone to whatever extremes if you've got stick them on your hands in football or for if you know you've got pine tar and an incidence in baseball where there is kind of people look the other way and certain things that people know they go on but it's kind of you know excepted that in life you're absolutely buoyant in front of the cameras some things like that may be going on and as long as you're trying to win a that's that's part of the game and from that standpoint the fact that there was so much outrage about a these guys are trying to win the statute at the time for the palate he was a one match ban and that happened in the recent past with fact to pussy other players it happen shortly afterwards Sri Lanka. Dinesh Chandimal and I think it was just kind of alarming from the standpoint of a if it's just a what one match ban and wiser body up in arms about this and what you know why did Cricket Australia suspend them for a year what's what's so great about it was it was more of the honor or the dishonor about the offense in the Australian culture that I think people were fascinated by from the U.S. Standpoint Jonathan we've had this interview that Bancroft did recently if David wanted does come back and we looks like he is coming back and let's be honest about this how is he going to be received by the fans. Going to strike. Through the made reset being painted this as the learn that my will may not be true but I think you know the way Smith Spain sort of treated in kind of cricket and he's got a few issues. He sort of been. Sort of accepted and encouraged in certain quarters and not I think Bancroft had a little bit of a sign of that it was interesting last night when Bancroft came back and played in the Big Bash League for both Scorchers and it was interesting that the TAVI were trying to play or the way he was received you sort of you got in how was the reports that he was. What I thought it was a much of a crowd respond well 7 Cricket there were covering and the game was sort of trying to play up the fact that you know it was quite encouraged even though it's a ring for balls and he was out and sort of our wall applause was that. He was booed as well so again it's difficult to say and I would imagine like most things you know really polarized there's going to be some funds that whatever they do they seem to be accepted in all this because you know that the slower on the baggy green or all of that they're going to be there not to be forgiven has it had an impact on the popularity of cricket you talk about players not coming through is that a danger for Australia. I don't think so I think I think. Still I think they are certainly. Running cricket but I think I think the general Aussie Ponta still goes to the guy I went to the 1st actually. A couple weeks ago and I was pretty much full So listen he wasn't well I've not seen a negative impact on that point I found it fascinating I was in Florida for the Caribbean Premier League this past summer and when the Barbados tried and Steve Smith played for Kate they came through and they played the Jamaica towers in August in Florida I was I was so fascinated by the response they were fans there who were cheering so loudly for Stephen Smith and there was a family who is originally from Sydney who were in the stands and I went up and talked to them and there was a an 8 year old and a 6 year old son and daughter and I asked them Who are your 2 favorite players and they shouted Steve Smith in the other and she had a David Warner and I don't think many a shot Warner was good but it was I couldn't believe that the fact that they they did not the fan support didn't seem to be winning and the fans didn't seem to have the same reaction is a lot of the media reaction in terms of this shame that they still love these guys and I don't think if they come back I don't think there's going to be booing or there's going to be negative reaction I thought I honestly think based on the evidence that I've seen and it was similar in Canada the global T 20 Canada or the French actually that debuted in August or the fans that were there overwhelmingly supported both Smith and WARNER So based on that evidence and some other bits I don't think there's going to be a negative reaction if and when they do come back to play for Australia games it's going to be. Gone just not jumping to please or any because obviously they're both I.P.L. Players as well. You look back at the whole context of why this decision was taken oh you know it was the time when cricketers should I was negotiating the broad cause deal and a lot of other commotions out of sponsorship commitments were up for a new 11 it's that part of the could assure you had to take this decisions I'm not sure if we're going to show what a wall into to the dickens decision of sending a strong message but there was pressure on Cricket Australia I remember I was on a show you know during that time because of the scandal and I think sport is a friends awoke of grossly with going to show you are somebody who being enrolled in the new all things they were pretty they were pretty clear that some of the decisions that are going to be taken are going to be taken to send out a strong message not necessarily a message or it was a reflection of the mood of the nation yes obviously pride and honor is something that a shade gets out of talks a lot about but beyond that a lot of the decision that was taken but that was handed out was more of pressure was dealing with the commercial sort of writes that law for a new one so that's something that we need to keep in mind just going back to the fact that the pads would be pretty happy to choke of those dollars because they still go by the performance of a player on the field if seen that happened red flag but Harbhajan Singh and she shot 2 of the players during I.P.L. They had a spat However you know at the end of the day with all the players in the performances that matter so you know I strongly believe that even if they come back to the team I don't think the fans would sort of there probably be more happy to see Australia doing a little better than would be out of me would they be welcome back in the I.P.L. When they turn up and they play in Hyderabad they'll call Qatar Oman by Will they would want to get a good reception. But absolutely I'm not denying the fact that there would be sledging the fans would go for him but at the same time you know the professional cricket owes you been there you've done that and you know exactly how to handle it and once you go through such a situation we've had really a great Harbhajan Singh go through a situation like this but he was in wall in a scandal in Australia so you know that there are going to be jibes that are going to come through you always whenever Harbhajan Singh goes Tristrem a winter day when you see recently Simons had written a piece about how his his all of you all know a scandal that erupted during India's jury was chilly air so those things will continue it will come back to haunt you but at the same time I guess this cricket does get paid to be doing what they do and it's a practice that comes along and you need to sort of accept that that jives I want to be that but definitely during I.P.L. There were a lot of the sort of discussions about Smith being missed and some of those players being missed obviously it doesn't like. Stars like Smith and Warner in India and I'm very sure that once the bans are lifted their respective I.P.O. Teams would be looking to get them back James you're going to Belgium something that yes you got Jonathan Yeah we just want to pick up on the point of Brenton and being professional obviously want to have these problems a great cricket recently when he was sledge boy and apartment it was really Jesus brotha and if you remember he walked off the pitch for a few minutes and then walked back on again so I did take on these points about the big professional broad question with the Warners you know you know. So of course you call state to be able to cope we sort of. Sledging from some. I really do question that at the moment James Yeah when when when it's in their office when they think their nostrils thing is that edge of Aston isn't over yet World Cup and you're going to be sat with the Barmy Army Yeah David Warner is anywhere near them easy going to get a pretty rough but I think the Barmy Army to try and do a job on the Australian players and you can see that with the social media out pour the you know the I don't want to say we have it they do really because it's not you know it's got me out sort of see what's so afraid of me but he like you know like John makes the point I think he did struggle in grade cricket and if you're coming from you know a sledge we don't know what was said obviously if that's coming from one bloke in grade cricket Well when you've got a few 1000 England fans and on the home button the World Cup is going to be slightly different so you'll be well behaved that we're not going to be hearing anything offensive coming from your home and that also thanks to those of you who are be getting in touch Simon from sulphide says good morning and thanks for a great show one of my earliest memories is being driven in our family car by my Aussie down listening to England doing well against South Africa on Test Match Special some time in the late eighties it made me proud to be English and the tent ness and excitement of the commentary made me fall in love with the game been a lifelong fan ever since I think that's much specialist on that to many people and the next half an hour we want to find out how did you fall in love with the game how do we persuade more people to do the same we're going to be talking about expanding the game across the world and I'll complain about watching cricket in India get in touch 85058 up all night B.B.C. Cric Info who specializes in U.S. Cricket but we're lucky to have him in Sol 3rd from President Jonathan north will writer of the upcoming book ruling the world the story of the 992 Cricket World Cup who is enjoying Australia's struggles but not too much in Melbourne we have a very happy. Indian cricket broadcaster who's also involved initiatives supporting women in sport I mean I'm going to have a little bit of a moan here because we're going to talk about how we get more people watching Test cricket I live in Kolkata a lot and I go to Eden Gardens a lot and I go to a lot of Indian cricket grounds and I think there's obviously a problem with people watching Test cricket in India and I think one of the reasons is sometimes the experience of watching a Test match in India isn't great you know when I go I can take in my own food arc on even take in my own water you know forget about having a bear and the other stuff that the Barmy Army sometimes want to do when they're travelling abroad in India you've got to improve that experience I think to get people coming back and I know they're making an effort taking it to smaller venues but do you think it's time that some of those things changed in India. But I think it's the issue off the tendons part of Test cricket is not an issue of just putting into India or the experience it's more about like we saw the test between use 11 Pakistan what a test it was but there was not a single person that was there the ground in U.A.E. That we recently saw it went down to the wire but nobody to cheer the team they were about 2 or 3 people so it's something that's an issue that's big in world cricket and that's what you see I.C.C. Also investing a lot in doing there is to understand what are the things that could be done I understand that the experience might not be the same in every country of there are different issues there are different sort of security concerns and that's exactly one of the reason as well that if you see in terms of attending I guess magistrate out to England to a South Africa or 2 or U.A.E. To India to be different I don't think that's the batter's and that but it's more a whole overall global issue that I.C.C. Is facing of a governing body that they are aware that the appetite for a Test cricket due to the advancement of 20 leagues or to 10 leagues of the patience levels or the attendance or the patient levels of people to sort of a bend a game it's pretty much now 3 hours of horrors and they're so used to it and you know I was reading a bit of research reason be it said that cricket in India has an ageing sports it's only 40 to 40 plus other people who are consuming a lot of Test cricket which means that the younger generation is not such digging up to test match cricket because of it could be the I.P.L. It would be the teeth and leagues that are coming forth and it's also due to a lot of people taking up football they have been following the P.L.O. Clubs they've been following different ones that are happening so that's also to be kept in mind that you know cricket in India is more of ageing thought now so as that generation grows I don't know how many people who take to Test cricket in terms of being present at the ground but definitely if it's a marquee Sienese you'll definitely see crowds coming in on the weekends but it's not. More of the India issue I think it's more of an issue that of the I.C.C. And it's more of a global phenomenon that will test cricket will live in a long hard probably 10 years down the line it's a question that what is the I.C.C. You make a good point about football I'm fed up of seeing Manchester United's of them called to the no Leeds United ones unfortunately Jonathan one of the attendances been like for the India Australia series good bad. I think they've been as good as Cricket Australia would it would have hoped for and I went to the. The as a 20 game at the Gabba and that was fairly well supported but again I think that's indicative of where we are at the moment the. Cricket in a short spell we want to start we want to finish it all in in in a few hours rather than you know the sort of the more nuanced. Longer form of the game which is which is really sad I mean you know I think about when. The former T.V. . In the eighty's in England source in England absolutely hammered by. West Indies but you know I still. It's still a lot of critique still do now so I think it's just easy to go out Test cricket or in and we only want the the cricket stuff and I'm just thinking is there something else that. The R.C.C. Store or the like can do to make it to my Test cricket more appealing than what might might be just where we are as a society now we want we want it we want it quick you want to go over with something get on to the next thing Peter if we if we took Test cricket to the US. Wouldn't want anybody to end up to watch it would we see Americans flooding in for 5 days of Test cricket Well I don't know about phoning in but I think there would actually be some interest to be perfectly honest all you say so in this being taught by having India Pakistan Test series in the US well use myself as an example I fell in love with cricket through Test cricket 1st and foremost my 1st experiences watching cricket were through the 2005 Ashes series and when you see the superstar matchups that took place in that series when you had friends off on one side you had Shane Warne and Gilchrist on the other side and you had Kevin Pietersen we have in his breakout maiden Test series and you see those kind of charismatic figures you can only be drawn to this for and the argument that I think is sometimes overblown is the duration argument that Test cricket is too long and people don't have time for it if you look at a sport like golf in the US I've never heard anybody make an argument that nobody has time to go to watch the Masters because it takes place over but the Masters is once a year isn't well but it's a 4 day event and if you're going to the Masters you're there for 1011 hours a day over the course of follow on particular golfers from you know the 1st to the 18th tee but they make it a social socially fun environment people who go to a golf tour and they bring a cooler of beer they hang out they hang out with their friends they drink they're encouraged to have fun and in some cricket venue's the social aspect I don't think it's played up enough that there's almost. An intense peer fan pressure of you have to watch every single ball it can take your eye off cricket it's well actually not like you go to cricket and you can you can kind of relax you can have a chat with your friends you can have some beers you can make it a fun environment you don't have to literally watch every single ball play because you're going to get burned out too and then if you play up the social aspects. The fan friendly aspects I don't see why Test cricket should be different from any other form of cricket or any other sport for that matter it goes on longer than a few days Peter's just explain to us how he fell in love with cricket that's got a gene in Sussex Good morning to you Gene how did you know how did your guest thank you how did you fall in love with the world's best game I 1st watched cricket with my husband he loved Test cricket and I would more chip but I wasn't have very good old style would go off and the other thing is come back and find out what was happening then my husband died and I lost all of my eyesight so I had to head into the radio commentary and from the Saturday 1st minute of listening to the radio commentary I absolutely loved it so much that I hate to miss a minute of it. Well that's wonderful and do you listen to Tessa much special regularly then every single day yes I listen to all of the crickets if I can on digital or on and family and I walk up and and I just I just love the way that they just scribe all of the things that are happening outside of the ground when we're in my ceiling and they were describing the long train that was going past the car engine a distance and all of the beginning is just make you such a part of the game and you say listen you're actually there that's a lovely story and you keep enjoying Tess much special and I hope you enjoy the World Cup Yeah thank you thanks to as well Harry me I mean how a sport is covered is so important isn't and we have radio commentary in India but the way that it's televised is taken it beyond making it more than just a now been game in India now you it's being watched in parts of India that never watch cricket before. Well absolutely you know cricket is the number one sport it might not be the national sport of the country but it's still the most consumed sport across the country and that's evident in terms of if you not just look at the television ratings if you just not look at the commotion standing of Indian cricket it's the only because of the frags who are sort of strong in the stadium you look at the I.P.L. As you look at the Indian players wherever they go or you look at a Big Bash League now you know I'm just giving a contrast to this so we don't have any I mean employers who participate in other T 20 leagues and that I see as a huge factor where the number of ratings if you compare between a big bash of the I.P.L. I.P.L. Always stands out because the economics of Indian players being present be India's start to history of the India store doing Lynn you know that India brings in a certain amount of economic power with it but also it's the Indian sags who make Indian cricket so way popular are a couple of the Woke up and going back to the point that everybody was mentioning about the attendance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground I've seen far more boxing to test matches with a packed house I don't know if it's the impact of the ball tampering scandal it's also the impact that was always come to news cricket in Australia and this time to use to battle for being the number one spot because Aussie who's always has been a straw that a lot of people take up to so I don't reckon Oh you know cricket even though it might not be the national sport it is only going to continue growing in India and now people don't watch it on television it's become so can we need for people to just log on to a phone use the digital. Medium to sort of watch abs absent people in villages not watch it on. Television sad but they're hooked onto them or buyers and that's where they get all their our lives matched feed up did so they come to us about not and it's not cheap that you know you're just going to grow the popularity of the game can ask me quickly or any I know you've got to go we're talking about the rising popularity of the game we're talking about the men's game they're on there are we seeing that with women's cricket as well. Absolutely on of the work of the just concluded but the kind of performance that India put up in the finals of the previous woke up it was a huge sort of turnaround for India that forced A B C C I as well now let's let's be honest he'll be C.C.I. All along have been pretty skeptical of investing agreements cricket because the job easier bosses only a presidents their way clear up that women's cricket means you're just going to put in the money there's a lot of then Norah Jones are going to be seen but now that we've seen a lot of changes because obviously the perception the government is backing the men embalm and there's a huge movement that's happening Falbe him in women's and while men can spot and that's been reflected with Soden decisions that have been taken by the B.C.S. The women's team now has a centralised contract after so many years the women's team also has their own set up of course has psychological stand a lot of things that have been put in place for them it might not be as the top grade up for the men's team but definitely there's a system that's been put in place and I see recently conducted research and that research indicated that the growing fanbase for cricket across the board is that women so that's a new target sort of audience that they are also looking at where they're getting more sponsors if you look at the welcome that recently concluded there are so many partnerships that were done so there are a lot of corporates as well coming ahead in India as we've got a lot of corporate showing interest in women's cricket so I think it's an it's an area that needs to be focused on and it's need other will need a lot of commitment not only from the cricket boards the I.C.C. And the sponsors but also from the players to sort of more that OK this is the time that we need to put up a foreman's up a couple formants up and get more sort of. A performance do the talking and be a complete package if you look at well let me have the case I think that is the case or any and thank you very much for joining us and I look forward to talking to you as India celebrate winning the World Cup at Lord's in 2000 and. $1000.00 but enjoy the rest of the series against Australia Nicky's texted in she says cricket needs to be free to view on television so many young Brits get lost while cycling which is covered live on free to view continues to grab us in Birkenhead what can we do to make Test cricket more popular again. Questions to seek us yes. Always well pleased me very much if we could have. Created 2 innings side cricket in my eyes 2020 and care a game changer was taken over. The killings came is that proper cricket is it not. All it will is isn't it I mean come on this is if there's a generational shift in the race and you know it is a relatively young bloke you know I'm 24 I was sort of. My 1st memory of cricket really old 1st thing that got me hooked on it was the 05 Ashes and that whole scene that I remember vividly and that was. The last time it was on 32 and there wasn't as well that was the point I was about to make was that was the last time you know that amazing coverage Mark Nicholas in there was Shane Warne and it was it was you know Michael Vaughan and Flintoff knows what the characters and the coverage that the whole nation the Cuban around the block to trying to get into the grounds to watch it now and I read it and I know that in England it's still very well attended this Test cricket but it's not just about the attendances it's easy enough to get 15000 in the ground but can you get a whole swathe a whole generation of kids playing and that's the thing that the struggling with at the minute isn't it and it great to get Test cricket on. Money talks isn't it it doesn't do Peter I want to take it any and if I want to watch cricket in the states easy you'd be surprised as we more accessible in the US than it is here. And I'm. Being dead serious and this is something that people find fascinating and it's almost like that with the Premier League here too you have to. Pay for what we have to pay for but you have. Make it again accessible here you have the blackout rule on the Saturday of the primarily You can watch the I think 3 live games every Saturday and there's bars that open up at 7 am in New York to have viewing parties for the 12 o'clock kick offs here in the Premier League Saturday and you can watch so many more live games in the U.S. Premier league than you can here and it's like that in cricket too you have to have you have to be a little bit creative for it but for the diehard fans you have a lot of Web platforms a lot of online viewing platforms that offer pay service whether it's 9 dollars a month or an annual subscription and you can watch basically any any cricket you want you're around whether it's Test cricket one day cricket I.P.L. Whatever I think for me more than the accessibility issue I think the biggest threat to Test cricket is the quality of the product and the dilution of the product. From other forms of cricket when I go back to the point about but that's not going to change because those one those are the ones that are generating revenue but But what I mean by that is I say I fell in love with cricket through 2005 actually and James made the same point because it was worn Gilchrist Flintoff Pietersen poncing right Test cricket now you have specially an issue with a team like the West Indies or New Zealand you don't have the best players from those countries playing Test cricket if you take the best players in the West Indies or what people perceive to be the best place in the cities you'd name a gale Bravo Pollard and Iran those guys are all making money T 20 cricket none of them are point Test cricket anymore and New Zealand you have a case like Brett McCall who basically retired early from Test cricket a couple years ago and he's still well gosh I mean isn't it T 20 cricket worldwide I see more that they want I think you know we're going to we're going to see specialist cricketers like that I want to move on quickly because I just want to get into the World Cup but we've got an e-mail from Neil in Middlesbrough hireable I 1st fell in love with the game when I was playing it at school that's another problem there but later on in my life I didn't play because I had other things that I got into but 11 years ago I went to Headingley to watch an O.D.I. Between England and India and then I fell back in love with the game and now I play for a local team called Great Brown tonight it was Great Britain from and I hope that brought brought I hope that India won that particular much let's move on very quickly to the World Cup. James this has to be the year where the Barmy Army is going to get excited England's strong favorites I think so I just think England playing at home as the more rank side they've got to be the favorites for the World Cup the way that Morgan and that squad you know it's not just a team or 3 or 4 plays it's just squad of players the player the last couple years who surely got to have the best chance that they've ever had as well is a tournament that you know we've been reeling generally didn't badly somehow in the world diabolical volatile and I think it's almost like you know I hate so reverting back to the football I think is a precious thing and what and also England the being blown away teams for the last couple years you don't know all it takes is to you know. The moment I don't think of you playing everybody and then the top 4 play the semifinal Jonathan is this going to be the great David want to come back or the take the Aussies do in the world cup please they know the flow you know. That's what that's one of the easier questions I just don't think Australia are in a position to to really do too much damage I think it's very very similar position to 9092 where I'm not sure it's one particular level every makes things. You look at $92.00 what I want I do everyone else and that's obviously what's going to happen next year. It's a good format but I still fear the. Missing something. But I think Australia different in a way I think you know from Asia going to probably between India and England I think New Zealand have to be watched because I think they're getting better and better as well and a lot like 92 New Zealand could just come out of nowhere and cause problems and show pay to agree with this point there should be more change in the work of next you know it should be a proper World Cup rather than just and only 10 you know there are a lot of sides that are not there that shouldn't be there and are going to not there I'm not saying it should be you know 24 change or whatever but you know it should be a Lasix think change you know now are learning Scotland they're going to not create a bait and they're not they tell you in the tournament's I mean Peter you saw England Scotland you saw the Scotland can be England and everyone say that England could be the world champions so Scotland what you know that the excitement is going to say you guys have set me up I can jump on my soapbox. You've not got long to say that question are never some for the for D D M 16 team World Cup I mean the Associate teams the standard has improved dramatically in just the last 56 years alone and I think when the decision was made to chop teams from the World Cup It was done based on evidence from the 2000 especially the 2007 World Cup when a team like Bermuda was absolutely slaughtered by India. The standard has grown so much because of I.C.C. Investment so now you see a team like Scotland who can score 37380 games to England who almost beat West Indies in the World Cup qualifier who tied Zimbabwe in the World Cup qualifier you see teams like Nepal now who are supplying players like Sandy climate China that island in Afghanistan Afghanistan qualify for the cup and I think they're going to put up a serious fight because the one thing that holds back typically from competing is not having a bowling unit capable of taking 10 wickets. You've got guys like Rashid Khan now in their squad who are menacing forces in world cricket what a player want to play the best thing I saw this year was a lot of Afghan friends a lot standing up to watch Russia you can well of course we all know they've been going to win the World Cup but thanks for the pretense that we've had over the last the last few minutes I hope you've enjoyed the cricket phone in here on 5 Live of course you'll have full coverage of the World Cup on this particular station there's also commentary on India Australia and of course you can tune in to the big bash on 5 Live Sports Extra the last day of 2018 hope you have a good one and a good start to 2019 as well. This may be the same if it's 5 o'clock this is morning reports on 5 Live top story this morning that I'm sexually assaulted Japhet will chair meeting of White told officials today to discuss how to tackle the growing number of migrants attempting to cross the Channel this growing anger over the way the issue has been handled more than 220 migrants mostly from Iran and Syria have made the crossing since November popular tical correspondent is Alex for size writing in The Daily Telegraph the subject Javits at the factors behind the increasing crossings were complicated and often beyond the government's control he said the perilous journeys were being fueled by instability in the Middle East as well as organized crime and tighter security account a yesterday to him secretary agreed to joint action plan with France to try to deter migrants and disrupt criminal gangs involved in trafficking but some M.P.'s including conservative backbenches have criticized the lack of detail and called for more border force patrol boats to be deployed Mr Javits.
