Was her out there to explain to him my k.f.c. Was. The at. Thing fat camp. Weeknights from 7 to main fast on b.b.c. Radio my side. Hello and good evening you are listening to the evening show with me Jim main Foster thank you very very much for being with us tonight. That was shown Mendez bring it into night shows that thank you very much to Sean for that now I'm going to make a confession now as you know I am a big Liverpool fan so. I'm going to tell you a little trade secret I recorded this show this afternoon so this isn't a live show tonight so no calls or no text and I please so at this point of the evening I don't know if I'm saying thank you to the sports guys for their amazing commentary for this show all I'm saying oh no you sports guys are rooting my nights but. Hopefully it's the format but I have no idea. It's Tuesday and I young people's panel popped in this afternoon to share their 14 opinions on tonight's topics. Coming up on The Tonight Show some of the things we'll be talking about a new exhibition highlighting Sobel role models to inspire students has opened now this guy was thinking about the question does peer pressure still exist a choice now when I was a Union was a big thing you hot to drink if you wanted to get along with it with with many people he was kind of forced to drink I would say I was not a willing reciprocal to be but I didn't really have much of a choice shall we say but I was wondering does. Is Precious still exist today. Messengers service what's up will soon have a self destructing message feature these this a good move always these just an opportunity to allow people to send all kinds of wish to leave this message is that we don't know what age and the self destructing message is if I was to send you a message and you'd read that message and after a set amount of time that message with then disappeared with a whether you've saved it or not it will just go. We'll be talking about that and of course Christmas is Foxley approach and we are 15 days away from the big day. People have already I'm sure most people already got presents already but some people still haven't on the theme of presents we're going to be asking are you a people's panel Is it Ok to give recycle all secondhand gifts for Christmas Have you would you you know you know me you know I would you know I have got presence of guts to feed my clock right now I'm waiting to give off the fuck up just a pile but I'm waiting to move on tonight a bad way just because I know that I don't want them is up up up the. Well I will be able to decipher whether that is a good old bottle of Knox and I'm with you for an hour tonight so I'll be talking to the panel I'm to be throwing in some great music as well as I said before the sole reason the live shows are no calls or text tonight but of course when we're back with the old people's pilot in new good things will be back to normal and of course tomorrow will be back with our regular show times too so let's get back to the music Tom Walker is going to be bringing us in tonight and then right after that my panel will be here just to leave the show with me Jermaine Foster thanks for being with us and always demon on the law on. A whole lot more than good enough . To give an avid fan of God. Ain't a no. If you have to be in me. Don't . I don't need 2. 1000 miles from home. On my own. Down the phone. Call me to come. Home. To be. Told it. Told. Me I'm still. Here I'm just waiting for the lead to finally get to say these words face to face. A saw the. World call them but I just. Let it. Be and. See. To be. Told to. Hold. If you. Know me. Better. The big day is almost here now not Christmas type but the general election join a poll Beesley in the early hours of Friday morning for the live election special we'll have reporters of all the election counts from chest to sound polls from we're all to Washington and old points in between and it's not just the local results we will keep you posted as the national picture matches Through the Night Live election special starting at 1 am on Friday morning with me Paul Beasley b.b.c. . Jemaine Foster b.b.c. Radio. It is time to welcome young people's part of the last you panel before Christmas time the last one of the decade in fact I don't know I'm not buying I don't know right next time I see you guys it'll be a brand new decade will be 20 twentieth's horrifying it's like. It's like a new and futuristic time yeah it's like flying cars are just going to appear in the next month. A lot of expecting that's what I'm waiting to say right then so we're going to be moving on we've got our topics as always to talk about some very interesting ones today so our very 1st one an exhibition of portrayed in the stories of 12 young people have chosen not to have chosen not to drink alcohol has been installed at the University of Winchester Now the photographer at times in Ward says she was inspired to curate the exhibition by her own experience of university in which peer pressure led her to drink to excess she says she hopes students will discover sober role models among the profiles that might inspire them to resist such pressures in their own lives so I'm asking our panel who's joining us today if there is still a big drinking culture a university or is it a kind of outdated way of thinking joining me in the studio to talk about this we have Maddy and Mia Welcome guys thanks for having us thank you thanks for coming in so. Before before we get into the question of it do you will drink yes yes yes so does everybody drink alcohol Yeah Ok so I'm since being here will be in uni have you felt the pressure to drink and does that pressure still because when I was in Uni which was mostly How long ago it was it was a time ago there was total pressure to drink like your you were most likely a social pariah if you did injuring So is that still the case no I think I would agree you know I mean why do you why would you say it because every single life out of like educational events at uni is that you would think. So like even with the society as you know I mean by that yeah like those like socials are just drink Yamma socials or just how much can we drink in this period of time yeah yeah and it's like bottles in every bowl I found it I mean obviously that issued in fact to drink but I found it rare that the student got him or drink yeah yeah but I don't think that I have been on and I out with a girl who didn't drink and she was. Like a friend of a friend so I didn't know very well but like she seemed to have like a good time and no one was like it during mastering then she was totally fine and Mike was just drinking sprite was going on there wasn't an issue though that she was in drinking with people kind of know it wasn't it wasn't like. She would have impression it was just a couple people coming on and I was supposed to like a social or some kind of initiation or something like not where there's a breathing heavy drinking culture but even then there were times like when I was on the sly I'll be like are going to drink and then I catch myself and I was like you don't know if it's a touchy subject for some people or if it's just like a choice I would want about you so I think it's quite interesting social initiations especially with certain sports teams you don't need to name them but we all know the type sports that we're talking about and we've all seen the videos like there are so Ok you can name all right and the way rock behavior way yeah that's Ok. But like I don't leave those are the ones that we can see which have sort of quite iffy relationships with alcohol. One of the sports I don't really want to name the sport but it's to be pretty clear which one for anyone who knows but there was an initiation ceremony where they were like forcing 1st your girls to drink a couple of the cot and you're like come on like that I don't have both and I did like a couple of. You don't like Ok yeah I got all this and it's really really it's really grim and to those things other societies not necessarily sport where they played a thing called the Technicolor Dreamcoat where someone has to stand there with a lot of coat while people are drinking. Alcohol with. Coloring in it and other sick over their coat that's not normal reaction yet I mean likely at these type of initiation things like if you're if you're the person who wants to maybe join one of these teams and you say you know I want to play for this team but I just don't drink yes they're allowed to join I mean I have a friend who is in a committee in a sports team which I won't name couche crucial now it's. And I don't think it's ever actually happened with them there's been someone who doesn't drink but they are all genuinely nice people so I reckon they would. Not for someone and they would just kind of do it with water or whatever but I have a friend who wanted to join I think it was hockey or something like that like one of those sports teams that has a reputation and she was like I want to join it but I don't want to deal with all of that stuff like I enjoy the sport I don't want to deal with this I. Genuinely turned her off from wanting to do it I've heard I've heard similar things of people being turned off society's university because the reputation the pre-season with alcohol you know the thing is there isn't real whether it's real or not isn't relevant to whether that would be accepted not accepted doesn't actually matter because of the person's perspective so the fact that they've been turned off in the 1st place says a lot about. You know how a lot of quite a lot about how it's viewed from the outside and you know these they have to move themselves harder if you need. To go through time. Because. We've we've already kind of outed Robey in hockey so we'll stick. To. Them too as our example but it kind of almost comes hand in hand if you're going to be special I know when I was in you know if you wanted to join the rugby team you had to take part in these initiations even though even some of the people who didn't drink that much you'd see them being carried out of the student union Oh yeah whatever and it's just like they never have a drink then they have to if they want to be the rugby team Yeah yeah yeah like a what about you guys have you have you 3 here have ever been pressured to drink or have you ever felt the pressure to drink I don't feel like I've ever been pressured in a situation like initiation but I definitely say all throughout my 1st year I drank more than I maybe would have liked I don't drink nearly as much as I did and I don't know if it was like an intentional pressure but there was definitely a level of kind of understood pay pressure that we all just decided we were going to drink to an excessive point yeah I was just genuinely habitable Yeah like I had a great time and I wanted to drink like I used to go out on life to say. That I am being out in life 2 months and I feel the path and that's that's the what do you think you go from uni and you drink and you go and I'll pay a monthly just like that I got reason so Mr Naaman like the Real Well yeah and I don't drink no win as much anymore I'm lazy so I was like yeah I feel like incredibly lucky that I feel incredibly awkward in nightclubs I don't actually go to nightclubs anymore I'm calling you know with 3 years really just like if you're really weird. Which means that I end up just sort of going to pubs or whatever it's going to be very you know feel like isolated by like like your friend group the same struggle with a friend group we've rather I don't think anyone actually really enjoys nightclubs I think I think one time I think. I've jumped the fence that I think I think that there's a large degree of people in places I didn't want to be there yeah this is this is this isn't any fun. I think that we're on the way and why we go on air I don't know they want to go here but it's crap. Yeah no that's the way it is I thought you know if you want to. Yeah yeah right everyone was going to waste places like yeah you know France book is forbidden and Ok so you go there. All the think the the nightclubs a cop who's going to the wrong I mean I think that other places I'm a troubled person very good job of all that I. Never feel like I'm done like the Belfast nightclubs didn't like them and I close didn't really like them I can't sit down I just have to sit down if I'm going to sit down. When I'm going to put something to use or know when I mean being a guy being an Irish guy is you know when you would say to your friends Ok I don't want to go out with was that ever turned on you like you know what you mean you don't wanna cry you're one of the lads so you you know where is she supposed to be able to drink to an extent yet like I'm not saying I don't drink like I. Still drink like but I'm just not in those settings so my alcohol intake is very different so I nearly exclusively only drink beer and book fast so the only 2 things I really drink so therefore I never really get into the situation we see people get into with spirits but I think that that's also a byproduct of what I'm in a bar would be a bit weird to go and get wild for for example and yeah it looks like here you go 3 heads all yeah yeah. Let's go to a song Who back to continue this conversation after the. Weeknights from 7 to main fast to b.b.c. Radio may sound. Right b.v. It on the move it on to our next subject. Now who here has decided against sending some think in a message in fear of it being screen shot because you know I don't I've never thought about I've never will vote body but I think it will never happen just maybe as conservative comics about how the female I used to get Was just don't care clearly I think it's time to me but I just think that. It's more like whenever you don't see it says more about the people who you're mates with where Lake and cheese that's untrue the cavity political and if they're like people actually I think slip people screenshot things that they don't know they shouldn't until it's too late I don't like oh I didn't mean to but it's done well according to reports what's up he's testing disappearing messages that self-destruct after they are sent to the feature is intended to preserve the previous c. Of conversations by allowing messages to be sent but let in the record that remains of them be patched. When it's turned on users will be able to set a time limit on the messages so basically like the snapshot I was before. I'm joined here in the studio by our young people's panel today we have Maggie and Mia So guys what do we think about this thing is this a good idea for Whatsapp is this going to encourage response approved and what's happening or do you think it's going to make things a little crazy I feel like no one uses what's up for that person I feel like people use what's up it's like texting alternative where it's not just it's like its own creature is that because snapshot has this feature started so it's kind of creating a market Yeah I don't think it's necessary and what's up no I don't because life if you need to message I use what apps attack I don't use my i message unlike what's up is what I use so I I always go back home messages and stuff in the home the media never like that what if you need the message to do so like say some terrible happened and you need to show the police a message but it's not so it wouldn't be all messages Yeah it's not going to do that's all messages was it not just you know how do you have a choice you could say you could send this message and then put a timer on that message that you send I feel like if it's so important that it's not like written down call them I feel like you have to like what's not be going to call them I don't want a law I just call people the way or me you said it shady Why do you think it's shady because like if you put a tab on message you know what I want to say what do you say. You know to me because I don't really think about I never say any and bought to anyone unless like when I'm a lawyer so I never knows anyway so you know the difference whether I sent a message but like if I was being shady I'm not right and so on and about going to disappear like I just found it a bit you can think of a purpose I'd want it for yeah so for example I was playing in a go at football term in the summer apartment shoulder right in the 1st game so I tried to put it back and try to play off of. Success so I only really I only managed for 10 minutes across you know rest of the week but so subsequently one of the people from the team were my thing off. Me to one of my friends so if you notice the friend was friends with me right so that he was from a different team in Spain so I was wanting to tell someone from our team in Spain but I didn't really wanted to be a thing I just wanted to say right this is what's happened. Like I don't want to go any further but this is what happened isn't that a bit weird that would be really useful for that purpose because I sort of reticent to send the message a few times because I'm like well what if he screenshots and send it on and that becomes a thing that I don't want to but I would just use not shout for that like I've already got something fall about. To the person isn't on snapchat I like and it's a compliment to go so you think that you think this is and what's sad need to have this this feature I don't think we need to have it because even on Instagram you can send a message yeah you can do that I want something I was well yeah yeah you can you can delete it you can be for everyone but then it still says messages to be to the books I should go to find the positive reason why you would switch that feature on yeah I mean not feel like this is my thing obvious thing that everyone goes to from going to turn this feature on and then send the message what do you say in your walk now you say are you saying because if you say that's like Paul 75 What's that with an even deleted what about if it's something comparison I mean if you say for instance you were going to somebody on a day or something like that and you know you don't you really don't know I think it's. Heavily if they sent me like I want to go on a day and it Dilly it itself in like 5 seconds I would then say Now like I say you know these chats kind of thing like that let's go to a song and we'll be back to continue this conversation right after that's We'll be back in the sec. Me. It's. Such on the fun in the. Cold. The sun the fun. On that you are. Joining me in the studio I have Maddy and me and we're talking about what substances you can to incorporate disappearing messages messages that you can send with a timer that will delete themselves self-destruct do you guys think that this will be used more for than positive or negative reasons not to tell negative me a stream and they can say what about you guys. I don't know I don't honestly I don't really care if people want to use it for negative reasons they're going to use it there's other things people can use there are other platforms people can use for nefarious reasons but we shouldn't necessarily let the great get in the way to get in to just because this isn't going to be 100 percent positive doesn't mean which is there is a baby over the bathwater like there would be some benefit to be some negative Sim Everything you've missed this is an whatsapp saying you know we want to be want everyone to be you know honest and true and we want to make sure that communication is completely honest this is what's up saying we're giving you a way of sending snide and sneaky messages without nobody finding out that's what I see I asked what I see it as well I just feel like it's kind of pointless just because there are other platforms for that so I feel like if you're a regular sender of sneaky messages you probably already on one of those of the pop films anyway the only purpose I can think of that would be great for is like a surprise but yeah that's like the one example I like to be all about alcohol yeah it's there we go there's the pasta thing Hansa and a few comments that we've. Social media Claire has said oh no I like the way it keeps it on whatsapp so I can refer back to where I always forget the conversation I'm having on snap chat and if it takes someone a while to get back I am a lot more riskier and snap chat when it comes to convos and pics I wouldn't send half the stuff on whatsapp in case of it being screenshot so yeah I mean people are a bit more say or risque on snap chat and a bit more conservative on whatsapp Yeah yeah I feel like well it's not his weight and it's not just the Yo man. Jake says I think you should keep What's up the way it is but there have been a few whatsapp scandals so I see why they're doing it yeah I think that also context is key so in a screenshot there is no context yeah so if I was to make a reference to something Ok so I could say something innocent and what's up but everybody that's to say but not in a group right but the group are aware that's me actually making fun of someone else who's done something Ok For example if that's any good screenshot and says. Horrific comment insert or if your comment here there's no context that a touch that it's just Council last coming from Jen Jen says regarding screenshots they have been lots of notable uses of group shots in the press like the work you need one where the ability to screenshot a problematic conversation with necessary would this move of deleting messages allow people to get away we've saying potentially harmful things in a group but remove the evidence of a kind of ongoing same by what I'm comfortable with private conversations become and personal the become public for the reasons that I said because you remove all contacts us not to say that people who do horrific things shouldn't be held accountable for their actions whether they do it in private or in public but I think that the reason large risk of. The no context thing you're getting in the public domain and something which quite incent them being looked on by other people to seem very different yeah I get that a conversation between 2 friends can be taken very differently yet by somebody who's got nothing to do with the chat Exactly and then they're coming in with their own personal biases are people are looking is a bit like v.a.r. In football so if you look at something enough times you then start to see things and you. Don't even get us started a very nice conversation for another way to save that world for another day. Radio Shack. Email Jemaine dot com staff at b.b.c. Talk I dug. Out it's about time of year again where the dreaded c. Would and no not cuts we mean Christmas. RINGBACK Like we plan it is. A huge percentage of the population are worried about finances I'm reliant on food banks to feed their family huge commercial emphasis on Christmas can just feel a bit wrong on the other hand maybe people are looking forward to the holiday to spend time with family and open gifts and the gift dial Emma is what we want to discuss today recycled gifts or 2nd hand gifts for Christmas is it a no no or is it Ok what do you think guys I'm all for it my dear you're Ok with it am I getting somebody gave you or. A real gift of gift like a song. It's like if it's something that's new and it's never been opened and someone gave it to them and I like I'm never going to use this why not pass it on instead of Ben I think it's a good idea and even in the case of like if you go it's like 2nd shop chary shop where I have it's by people presents don't mean that's wrong like I would personally go to a 2nd hand shop to buy myself something so someone's going to give me a present from there so I think that I think there in lies the difference if you go to buying something it's really grim this is how we view like the consumerism of Christmas like you have to buy something but if you put the thought in yeah issues with the really gifted one. I think it's fine until you get caught as with most things in life and it's a bit like it could just be very easy to be like well there's a. If they don't like it the there's the book type of thing that's everything. To do you think people who read gift gifts reak if the Secretly I think so I think yeah people I think it's very easy to put it in a context of like I don't want to say what's on terrible but it's very easy to put in a context of like there's an economic crisis going on so therefore re gifting is fine Ok I'm not saying that recasting is wrong but I think that's a very easy call but Ok in terms of there are would you re gift a gift no well even if it's something you know that you're never going to use. I think I would like to think I wouldn't I think that if I had a birthday party to go to and I'd forgotten to get a present or shop for clothes or whatever I think I can understand the circumstances where I would but I would like to think that I would. Is it so me or is it a bad thing to do these 2 like not by somebody you know a brand new gift for Christmas is it bad to repurpose something no I don't think it's bad because like if you've got so unlike the sets but on New York and you know someone else wants them I don't see the problem with it also I know I always do like not always but I often with alcohol I stuff that's not being open Yeah like if I'm going to a Betty also I like the take on this there's a bottle of wine or a case of wind in my office that that's still sealed I'll take a bottle of wine I had a maid like that we had a party and he came to 3 different parties get the same. And it was just until he got to the point where he came to this he came to the 3rd party and we were like to drink somebody's drink because I don't want to see that I look at it I say you know long you could have got it for you know I'm going. To be going Why do why do we view that. Why do we view as like the actions of social pariah I'll tell you I was upset by this because I was buying drink Yeah these 3 different parties so every time I went to these 3 separate pies I bore alcohol for them so this one person who bought the same bottle is just like are you being tight or you you know save your money or Yeah so why is that different there present so if we take the party got no problem with the gift and gifts I'll do so but so I don't understand the difference between requesting a bottle for example Ok and requesting a gift because the. The implication there is that everyone else is then maybe I'm bored if there's at least like a thought has gone into I'm then the other person doesn't put the thought I was just like we'll hear something type of thing to be honest when I present I never think author thought like Christmas is literally life I love Christmas and thought but like do you not just think it's a little bit waste the money we do not have to give Yeah life I don't need anything after I have gotten off my. Life my life my family is massive and we all buy stuff each one of my family goes overboard on Christmas the always off yeah and it's just life we don't need the style of the food goes to waste and it is just like a bit of a softie but it doesn't stop me from doing and like Nazri massively Like bit down on it but Christmas is like a big 0 capsulized adventure last point Internet and it really is it's about how much money can shops make how much how much money can be spread around so guilty of this a cost me more when our pajamas Yeah it's pajamas and we put them in the for the kids who are homeless and like don't offer any in a Christmas and I thought you know wife I'm going to new shoes every year and I have and I just I don't need in those kids you have now and I think Christmas should be about kids I do because it is so life even that those life at the base of like what should we get gifts some people have called one of all to it's like Be thankful that you've got this woman of God I think I would never marry gift something if I didn't think it was suitable for the person I'm not going to really give you something that I just have and I don't want Yeah like I'm going to go for what they like and do I have like if I have something they would like I'll give it to you in a band like would they even know or care I wouldn't. Care cause you have to be a pretty damn pissants appeal like thoughts week after that I don't know yeah I think the difference is when the thought is gone and so what I understand is requesting is really just a new way that is mostly used is like. As I said here's something that yeah that'll do whereas if it is something that will be of use to someone else then I do not like to be rude but I feel like a lot of presidents are like that anyway like with the exception of my close family and close friends like if you're going to bath a party of like a friend of a friend you just like Raul just crap like a bottle of alcohol and give it to him all like and I'll grab this generic thing that most women or men lying Yeah like the amount of girls who get like a lush pompoms for Christmas because why else would you get a girl that you don't really know kind of thing yeah like I feel like people do that anyway with presents that they buy new so why not just do it with one that's very gifted because it's like bad for the environment and so hilariously used to work fragrance consultant which is a fancy word for saying thanks a lot I spray people with so I feel like it was just it was fundamentally the most soul destroying job for my family. Especially in the run up to Christmas or Valentine's Day and it would be just complete thoughtlessness the people are pretty and I'm just being like I need for my bird Yeah that's a really weird way to talk with people like what's the point like put more thought what type of things I don't know from the flowers. I wake up it's an I got an I will help if you. What's on offer yeah yeah like that's the yes and if you lie you may as well read if something about point like there's no thought going into it yeah I mean I think that's I agree that like what is there a problem with if you work in a star shop and you can get a discount for all of your presents then come from the show my Christmas present have come from my shop here so I guess I'm just going to say it was me and yes you were saving my you didn't get anybody any perfume because I was like there too it's about it so what I did in fairness I did get my mom a Yankee Candle Yeah from the pharmacy but it was from a different part like get out of it I know what you buy me that you work in a perfect shop I was like well yes I did you think she wanted me to buy perfectly you saw your friends in. I would be upset if you bought a from that for reasons out but I thought it would show like a lack of thought on my part because it would be it would look like I was just stood there bored and work one day like Donald do you think you had another because I feel like if if you want to find me a Christmas present I would trust your perfume instincts more than I would my own I would not really like a few minutes of my minute like I've left the jobs I feel like the such a limitation that expired about 1st high ever I didn't know anything about perfume I just used the spoof based on the bottle to have to bottle it looks like. It's got like a really fresh scent for how to fly our own Florida. Right all year quite like active . If the Follow Me I take it out I'm never going to buy a plant even. If the ball is black or like navy blue all like it's really nice like one time complete and utter nonsense but if you say things for the conviction that we believe it yeah you're right we've just learned. That was what I mean I felt like mean every restauranteur ever wanted to do what's good what's in this and just make something. That was before we had beginnings and everyone was so food courses the like I don't know why we're going to have to leave this conversation here and there guys thank you very very much for being with us on the last Tuesday on out of the year of the decade and I have looked forward to seeing others all in the New Year trying not to read gift too many over this Christmas period and thanks for joining us tonight thank you you have a nice.
