Can talk about money the one pound calling the round. Ceases to be legal tender on the 15th of October thought to be millions of lying around the Yanks just put something out probably millions of people she was in mine with mind clearing that but how do you know. Whether or not the round the new ones will they work in the shopping trolley and other places to where even with under a week to go before the old round one pound coin ceases to be legal tender come on to what that means a bit later on but are there places where you can't use the new ones in other places that already stopped taking the old ones suggestions today that maybe some shops have already said we're not going to accept this and as far as I can tell legally they're perfectly entitled to do that they don't have to take your money they don't have to sell you stuff they don't want to talk about that and the one thing we've got the team chatting in the office today is just the way this survey I've seen for a long time in one of the nice pipes in the mirror. A survey done by the kitchen company magnate the top 10 have sold items we are most proud of. I love where I live I'm very proud of my home but I wouldn't say necessarily I was proud of any of the household items within it I don't get overly excited about my fridge it's really useful it's great to have and I'd be lost without it but you know something I've lost without but I don't feel proud of it other things to the top household item Apparently we're most proud of is our television really we had a minor discussion when we bought a new t.v. Because we sold the old woman the house and bolted it to the wall and it's so difficult to get it down like the telly as well some discussion of what size television to have it won't surprise you that I wanted a big one Mrs g. Wanted a little one We ended up 37. I went to the 40 she wanted a 37 I call that compromise. But most annoyingly where it is now in the living room she was right. And not winds me up and you have a household much of it when you want to. You. B.b.c. Radio start temptations and get ready so on Sunday the old one pound calling the round one ceases to be legal tender only the new ones which I think got 9 sides that right. Legal Tender are the ones that you have to say you have to except in shops you don't actually. Speak here is a form a shopkeeper Yes I was like Arkwright Actually if shops don't want to sell you stuff they can tell you to take a hike and not sully things if they wish it's not the best business model if you're a shopkeeper to be honest a bit but I'm not selling yeah that's obvious even time some of you watch these programs like salvage hunters and stuff like that on the t.v. Where they go around the 2nd hand shops in the daylight some of them want to sell that they're in a shop they want to sell it because they're collectors but I digress a legal tender is something that seems to confuse us so we've had a look and we've had a look at the Bank of England's website and how to look at various other websites just to clarify the position on it to kind of give you an idea with the week I've been told I can't ask people to send the money into me I've got a one pound cannot live and I did try but I'm not allowed so legal tender What does it actually mean well. It's all a bit dull really because you can want to back at it like it's really important what it actually means is technical very narrow technical meaning in law it relates to settling debts if you're in debt to someone you can't be sued for nonpayment if you offer full payment of your debts in legal tender So if you're someone 20 quid if you offer them 20 quid into tempo notes or 4 or 5 pound notes or whatever that's that's it that's legal tender that's what it means however there are certain things that aren't legal tender that you might imagine for example you can't settle a bill of 20 quid where you can if they'll accept it but they don't have to accept 20 quid in pennies or 2 penny coins because the legal attend the legal tender for that amount is anything up to 20 pence so the number of times I as a child I collect 50 pay in pennies and take it to the shop buy penny sweets and things like that don't have to take it they chose to because they were making the money and they're probably quite grateful of the coppers but they didn't have to take it. So that's what legal tender means that is what the old one pound coin will cease to be on Sundays he's causing some confusion I've heard and I could do with further or some evidence even of this that some shops are loath to take the old one panko in already. Even though it is perfectly legal to spend it perfectly legal to receive it. I'm pretty sure as well that after Sunday if you still got the old one pound coins you can take it into a bank and they'll take it off your to do a small 10 pound notes you found donkeys years ago and the great big ones. Will come out of the piece of a full paper these days the size of our old notes took it into the bank they changed it for me 10 pound notes no problem at all but legal tender very specific it's all about settling debts and it's only up to 20 pence in coppers notes and pound coins it could be as many as you like as far as I can tell so that's where that's come from have you been in a position where you found you can't spend the legal tender the money. Has someone said I'm taking your old one pound coin I need the new one I 17122 I white. I went to one of the high school of course where the great designer Reginald Mitchell actually was a people not school so very interestingly I had a machine. Link with. It says we've sadder Mashi of iconic piece of engineering genius possibly without which we might be speaking German and drinking shops gave us our very 1st victory and the war the 2nd World War over the national war machine the constant drone of machinery and out aircraft factory is the music of victory with the confidence of x. But they set about the job of taking role models from the boundary into the components of. The memories of being my involvement was that I came back into the museum to see the Spitfire looking very gyro it turned very sad and I came to the conclusion that we have to put together some form to actually bring it back to its former glory and show the people of Stoke on Trent. A fantastic piece of machinery it was because this plane that was built as you say 945 this big 5 it's here at the Potter's museum was actually given to the people of Stoke on Trent it wasn't given by the aria in recognition of Reggie Mitchell's. Ability to produce that plane. To design it of course it was given to the people of Stoke on Trent by the Arya on the city council of course are just the custodians of all of that part of course they have to put. Things into place to bring back to its former glory and show was and all the people in the park trees just how important teachers what does it mean then to have thought plain when it's here in its former glory in a hanging out for display 5 you want to Stoke on Trent to say massively important and it's not just about the people who remember it's not just about the people who go and visit church teaches. Importer intrusion far as education children from an early age about the iconic piece of engineering genius. Just the sound of those engines incredible b.b.c. Slight you consent to ask actually which is old because 6 months ago I'd have done it without thinking twice but apparently this could be an offensive question to some people. Are you male or female or something else front page of the mail today we call it and it's spelled differently. The Daily something gender neutral census this from the Office of National Statistics the male claims in lots of the other papers too that the Office for National Statistics is wondering whether to take the general gender question off the compulsory list on the census to give you an option really whether you say if you are male or female or all or not and to make it completely voluntary there's a quote here from the Office for National Statistics which says they are considering making it voluntary quote for the benefit of intersex non-binary people substantially you don't have to say if you're male or female now on the one hand talked about gender before and b.b.c. Radio Stoke and did filling in for Perry over the summer and did pose the question whether Actually it is relevant anymore and whether it matters if you feel it is completely irrelevant and nobody needs to know anything about whether you're male or female or trans or whatever then that's fine however there are lots of concerns according to many of the papers and many people who've written about this Jim angrier for example not happy about it. Suggesting that it would appear to mean the women lose the right to be women in the same measure as men lose the right to be men does it matter has it ever occurred to you that you wouldn't want someone to know if you are male or female How do you know anyway how what is it about you that tells you whether you're male or female or not I'm not talking biologically because that's become a grey area over the last few years you may well be physically one. But you may be emotionally and psychologically very much the other and that leads to all kinds of torment and turmoil 017122008 double 08 gender doesn't matter in 2017 and how do you know you are male or female are there certain things that tell us this and again I'm not necessarily talking about the biology of it on travel 3 Stoke and your message send me a text you can email studio dot Stoke at b.b.c. For with the latest news update is Lee Thomas and 3 people have been arrested one on suspicion of murder as police investigate the death of a man in leak at the weekend the 23 year old was pronounced dead at a house on Queens Drive on Saturday night he's yet to be formally identified. A man who planned to bomb a railway line with a device made from fairy lights in a pressure cooker has been jailed for life. $29.00 your whole 21 year old so he had Hussein filled the appliance with shrapnel and made improvised igniters from the festive decorations a man's been charged with arson in connection with a fire flats in Stoke on Trent last week police say the 36 year old is from Burslem multiple fire crews were sent to the block on Federation road on Friday morning and there is a great deal of interest in the site of a former pottery in Stoke according to auction is the Falcon works off London Road being offered for sale next Monday with planning permission to turn the buildings into affordable apartments more from a 5. B.b.c. Radio station and Chloe's on the line in blue and wanting to talk about gender and whether it matters my glowing for goodness sake of course it matters or I mean people that come up with this kind of thing are they on another planet. Go on then explain to me why it matters Well I mean the female the male a woman and man it male. And I mean I've noticed like that they're calling women act cause they're not actually there actresses and I really object very strongly to what's what's a woman actor or doing that's different to a man actor or one of the actors is out is always known in the past with actors they're not known exactly male I mean also a young man the other day and I was on the bus coming out of that university and he got away guard while she was in a skirt and everybody was staring at him I mean is that right what to steroids or where are we going to school. Both I mean I didn't there I think Heaven help me give me a man is a man a big honky man that looks like a man and behaves like a man and not just like a woman so why are you suggesting then that men who were. The best way of describing it slight and not very muscular Are they less of a man and a big hunk or no and I don't mean that at all how do you define a moment. Well Amanda dresses like a man speaks like a man acts like a man and there's a man not one that puts nails on the show no wakes and dresses up and it's good for a giraffe to see chicken with never happen just to go as a woman with a deep voice in a suit to mom then. Oh. It's complicated this is complicated but as the time goes on I really cannot understand what's going wrong with this world it's just a crazy absolutely crazy is what's wrong with this world for years we thought they were only men and women was actually the kind of men that one and women another and millions of them between and I was finally coming to recognize it. To me it's just it's just absolutely crazy I just don't go for it she was just so I mean I'm old fashioned and I'm a woman is a mole and then a man is a man and they should dress accordingly How do you know you're a woman cause I'm the woman for goodness sake I'm that I am I was born a baby girl and I am a woman my goodness on a woman not so yeah well not for me to say all the. People you see below who are born female don't feel in any way female and I actually feel there are male There are lots of babies I'm told born and it's quite difficult to tell yes that's a that's a great pity because I think a lot of men just jump on to the bank to walk and then because it's a vote they tend to do the same and I don't think they're that way it's all I mean I just think some of the most avid the function is they get sensitivity that's the way I feel anyway so it's trendy not to be my low female but be somewhere in the middle. Well I just it can be lots of things that suddenly Vogue and then everybody is jumping on the bandwagon and adopting that kind of things and to me. I just I love them as a man you know to mean a man that sounds like a man looks like a man dresses like a man and is a mum. Whatever I can women in crime says well let me tell you I used to like it called in college and years ago it's about cos one of the buildings is named after her if a young student came and said she would send them home and get them to put a dress or a frock on she wouldn't also allow it and look at me just now everybody nobody seems to k. People lots of small tiny Mo you know I mean you go into a hospital reception and a law suddenly got t. Shirts on I just think it's oh for I think you should be dress accordingly so you'd never wear trousers Oh wouldn't say that was where I was is but if I'm doing something I don't mind how does that make you a mom see what I mean about the complexity of it Oh I do that I mean if I've got a pair of rock at the moment I've been in the past today. But if I'm doing a good job when need to be small you can have small charges of course but what I'm saying is I do wear them but I just think the will is gone crazy I think and everybody suspect it's not the world that used to be and I tell you one thing I'm glad on the age I am because I think the way things are getting the dreaded So I said it's not children and my grandchildren and yes to come global you honestly think that but I want to I don't want to leave you with this horrific image but I am wearing jeans it's not a row it's a lot so the idea is going to fall and then that you're a man anyway because and then because I met you. Well it's interesting that that's a perception you've got We'll leave it that's and I thank you i was lovely to see 17122 I double I was glad we got it right. Act is who women are actresses women should dress I'm and for that matter should dress accordingly the woman in front she don't want women in Manly. So she was such a phrase 017-1228 double 08 is my number it all stems from the idea of the Census not making you. Giving you the option as to whether or not you answer whether you are male or female 017-822-0080 extension 8 the number to call b.b.c. Radio Stoke the surf to name the B.B.C.'s inside out programme has exposed people offering to launder money well spent money on the show today money laundering itself is where you take illegally gained money and clean it effectively so it can't be traced back to the original crime among the people confronted by our reporter Jonathan Gibson is a man offering to use his credit card machine to clean up cash who explains how he avoids being caught by the banks and then there's the man who buys overseas property and the mom offering to do it from a living room Google this from the National Crime Agency money laundering is about cleaning the proceeds of crime it's about trying to remove the criminal taint from whatever it is that you've obtained through some sort of criminal conduct there's the simple ones where they would just buy another product so the stolen 100 pounds from the handbag by way of an example you could walk into a large retail store buy a high value item take that down to perhaps a local pub and sell it cheaply there so you've turned your original 100 pounds into different cash but it's not associated with a crime I can't think of a crime that isn't fuelled by money laundering at one point or another there are thefts there's fraud there's online crime there's cyber crime every think requires money laundering in order to move forward money laundering offenses carry a maximum penalty of 14 years in jail so how did a reporter Jonathan Gibson catch people offering to launder money dirty money can provide clues to what you've been doing so criminals launder cash to discoveries where it's come from but there are plenty of people offering to do it as long as the price is right mate chip and pin Tony he's offering to launder money using his credit card machine by meeting him at some motorway services nearly failed so. Yeah what is it all about Tony Normally we're in a situation where. You're trying to get funds or something in a business be personal that's up to you Tony thinks the company I work for gives me access to company credit cards and I want to use those credit cards to steal some cash for myself to be honest as long as I'm talking to you and that money on theirs Ok And it's not you know I'm trying to say young not interested in that because every day is going to get locked up yeah so as long as it's not drug money he's happy to help most of Don's for 40000 right he'll use the cards I gave him to take payments and provide me with fake invoices so if anyone asks it won't look suspicious but in return he wants a big cut 50 percent on top and I have to follow his rules I don't like round numbers. I get in trouble around numbers yet 3 or 4 doesn't get into trouble for ground that could flag if you constantly might flag by flag he means something that makes his bank get suspicious so we've got to be careful Yeah but if I want a 100 grand we'll have to steal 150002 cover his 50000 pounds in commission would also need to do it gradually say of a 6 months 50. Plus. 25 or. $25.00 k. a Month that's not to be sniffed out and he's ready to start straight away. With big rewards there are going to be risks but I bet they didn't think I was one of them actually talking to b.b.c. Journalist and. We've recorded everything you've set right and we're concerned about the adverts that you've placed in these money transfer services I'm concerned about transactions you've just described to me and the amount of money that you say you've already processed but if you've got anything to say not just that it works not Barack out do it right but the work is as described isn't it the work was removing. Money it's not longer and it's worth doing through the work for that money to do the work for that money obviously. Tony later told me that everything he said was a lawyer he was just carrying out research into criminal activity and you can see more about that story the full report on inside out West Midlands tonight half past 7 on b.b.c. That is around 12 Celsius at Leaks a slightly poor really for the time of year but as I say they will be improving we've got some clouds around the region at the moment but so that is going to start to produce a bit of drizzle rain as we head into this evening and overnight but otherwise it should be a dry night and fairly mild actually with temperatures holding up quite nicely into double digits around 12 Celsius across the north stoppage and south Cheshire will be left with some drizzly bits and pieces of rain through the morning tomorrow as well but it should be a largely dry afternoon with some pleasant spells of sunshine and a touch warmer to see highs of 16 Celsius tomorrow but tomorrow the remnants of ex hurrican 8 begin to take effect and they'll be affecting the northwest of the country by tomorrow night's going to rain and stronger winds we may just get the knock on effects of that with some outbreaks of rain and strong winds through tomorrow night and into Wednesday that rain could turn a little bit heavy at times but specially so across the north but then it all starts to fade away and it dries up into Wednesday night as a ridge of high pressure builds for Thursday and for the rest of the week it's a mostly dry picture with some pleasant spells of sunshine it's a misty mornings and temperatures almost touching 20 Celsius by the time we get to the weekend so very pleasant indeed that might be nice on the way in the door. Radio host. Good evening. To you join us in the middle of a discussion of gender and whether or not it really matters and whether the Office for National Statistics is right to consider making the next sundress the 2021 census you can decide whether you put down your gender or not. To text messages. The moment. It's brilliant they're considering the gender question from the census but it's important to distinguish between sex and gender sex is what's between your legs the and gender is what's between the emotion and it will be better if they offered 2 questions what sex are you assigned at birth and what gender do you identify as. And let's not forget the daily mail attacks here. Notoriously transposed the Daily Mail or been quoting this afternoon and the point about being trendy that was made earlier transgender people are statistically much more likely to sound and or at greater risk for suicide why would anyone choose that path just to be trendy. Well we on the other hand came on the show and said it's ridiculous she's female she's always been saying why didn't you say what you 171228 double 08 if you wish to discuss that we will talk about conspiracy theories you know to the to the day she died my gran was convinced that no one had ever set foot on the moon she'd seen Neil Armstrong doing his one small step for. Person one giant leap for humankind thing didn't believe a word of it thought it was all a set up in the deserts of Nevada she's not the only one conspiracy theories about that there are those who claim that 911 never happened I don't quite know how they get their heads around that because they seem to be an awful lot of witnesses and an awful lot of casualties and fatalities from that but there are conspiracy theories about almost everything you see and hear. Reading about them looking them up believing them does it do us any good I will speak to a man who will appear on American television lecture Stanford University for some insight into conspiracy theories and not whether true or not necessarily but what they do to those who believe them and what they say now those who sign up for conspiracy theories might well say well he would say that wouldn't because he's part of the conspiracy you just can't win with it I mean honestly this way lies madness but we're going to try and get to the bottom of that in the next 20 minutes 1st churches Police and Crime Commissioner wants people to volunteer with the force to watch them dealing with protests and demonstrations sounds exciting doesn't love a good demonstration down with this thing is nothing new in this for decades members of the public normal people like you have been watching life in prison how does it work could it work for the police Jackie Marshall's a prison officer a member of the National Executive Committee of the prison officers association and joins us from p.b.c. Radio Hello Jacki Oh so you've had to observe this for donkey's years in the prison service what do they do yes for one back and then they're not then just over 25. And they probably don't walk around. Is one of those really. Stop saying what's going on talk stuff. Up and use the stuff. To raise issues so they're there for both. Sides necessarily in prison I wouldn't thought but they're there for everyone really you know if you've got if you've got an issue and maybe I don't I don't feel safe as a prison officer you can talk to them there's a prisoner who feels hard done by for some reason they can talk to them as well yeah that's correct what would you say when you've got people watching does the behavior of the prison officers and the prisoners change. No because they're running about quite regular So they want them to cease walking around and what kind of things that I see that you know everything you do they see every day life. Within the prisons we also call the militias we have into this going on there is a member the I Am be on call will come in and up to the incident. I am very sorry independently from both right so. Just trying to think of a scenario if if in a wing in a prison the some kind of riot going on would someone be called in to observe that yes why. Just one of them is that to make sure everything is dealt with properly and they always after many moons ago they were known as the good because they change some time back to sleep on the monkey boat and they will come and. If they called in for an incident to ensure everything is done properly everybody's welfare quick doctor and just general things like that we like but there's so much part of everyday prison life that you don't really notice is that them. I mean you know to say that because when they come on to wings and they have to consult their own that their own but. They are familiar faces seen right around the curtains do you think there might prison life Presa for everyone and very difficult for me because I've never known any different walk cept when I'm 27 years people in that I've raised issues with them before they do to a new report about individual prisons which are you know are probably ports that can be read as anything other than trying just as a result of them being that do you think Apple think so no I think other than them raising issues from. An independent I mean obviously since we've got the courts imposing offices and balances still I didn't see the escalated the I am being will do reports about what. And feed it back to the various bodies could it work for the police and quite possibly I mean the difference for us is with when I become ill and they walk around you know they've got peace between go around. The place they would seem to be on the pretty side of supposed because they would have to go they would place. So the prisoners don't see them as being on your side then you know they don't know it's really interesting Jackie thanks for talking to me tonight fascinating about the things that go on inside prison. Something touchwood have never really experienced in that sense of spoke to many people who have never been inside for any length of time that makes it sound like I'm being inside for stuff you know what I mean. My wife used to work in a prison actually a long time ago. I would hopefully speak to police and crime commissioner about his plans later in the week about getting people to come on board is voluntary. B.b.c. Radio and come back. A lecturer from Staffordshire University has been to Los Angeles this summer to star in a sitcom. Honestly you couldn't make this up but he's damn Jolly was whisked out there to quash conspiracy theories turns out he's a bit of a specialist and he's in the studio the softer noon thanks very much for coming in really good to see it's not as glamorous as Los Angeles is Hamley on a Monday afternoon yet the weather isn't as nice as I as Los Angeles but it's good to be here and it was lovely to have you so your day job just to be clear on this I understand you are doctor and an academic Doc I am going on medical one and you kind of specialize in the psychology of conspiracy theory that's really Ok for people who don't follow conspiracy theories in a nutshell what are they conspiracy theory so it's kind of pointing your finger at those in authority so was Diane Africa sample met by the whole family or u.k. Government as opposed to a simple car accident but I'm interested in why some people believe these conspiracy theories and why shouldn't we do not so what scholars you make up about people and what the consequences of believing Diana was murdered or knowledge was inside job or that climate change is not happening what is the implications of that belief so my gran For example I mentioned earlier to a dying day never believed that Neil Armstrong or anyone else had ever been on the moon despite evidence to the contrary she was convinced it was all filmed in the Nevada desert and actually if you go online and look this up there are all of those there are thousands of others who come up with some evidence is they. Puts it to suggest actually Gran was right we're to believe in a conspiracy theory is a normal everyday process it's not for people who are in Tim for hats who are paranoid it's a normal thing so for example there's different biases that we have in our mind that make us more likely to believe a conspiracy account when a big event a happens so Diana died or Jack has assassinated away every t. S. It's a big event we must explain this a vent by something equally as Baek So saying it's he could I'm a conspiracy or whatever it is that maintains pushed narrative between big event Big course to say Diana was was killed in a car crash doesn't make sense so our brains are coast to kind of look into the conspiracy to explanation it makes us feel more in control less anxious more certain So it's kind of a normal thing to do for my gran wasn't she wasn't mad it it's it's a normal thing to believe in conspiracy theories it's just that potentially chemically dangerous so whilst they are quite fun to talk about you know God what happened there it could actually lead to disengagement coming to that in a moment. We'll get the latest on the roads around these very engaging in this moving across that region Absolutely every day if you had a device on the road at the moment it is looking fairly slow if you're heading out from Newcastle up towards the hospital and 53 King Street and a trolley road it continues to be fairly slave the a 53 then as you make up towards the Cambridge lights and rainbows and particularly sleigh for us Hanley road struggles with mongering road works as well as indent wards Handley from the slums do it have delays right there if you heading for the a 500 d. Road in general it's coping Ok for us this afternoon a major delays let you know by it's a $52.00 towards join a square there are different story really slow towards the Victoria Road junction the moments that you would have to laze around and there is also a fairly slow night towards the line killing traffic lights as well be heading to the motorway at the moment if he was behaving Ok just a little slow traffic north of 19 as you make up towards the end 56 up nights of our park trail. A bit is looking fairly slow and 3 Stoppard it's looking slow to the Beacon side up towards the stay re junction for the a 513 stood watch out for a few delays right there otherwise traffic seems to be caving Ok Now of course if you see a problem or can update us call 178 to 2 or late late evening Staffordshire and Cheshire our name is with Travel News every 20 minutes this is b.b.c. Radio Stoke. The weather find the saving rain overnight temperatures down to 11 Celsius 52 degrees Fahrenheit Tuesday starts off cloudy with some showers they may linger if they go steadily largely dry but breezy with some sunny spells in the top temperature of 17 Celsius $63.00 degrees Fahrenheit so we're talking about conspiracy theories with Dr Jolly who is from Stanford University and lectures in psychology there and specializes in the psychology of conspiracy theory So Dan it's not whether it's true or false it's not whether there was the royal family involved all the u.k. Government involved in the death of Princess Diana it's not whether Neil Armstrong actually did walk on the moon or not it's not whether a plane actually did hit the Pentagon it's why people and why some people believe that there's more play Absolutely those are interesting questions just not asked but my research that's kind of a different question different kind of purpose I'm really interested in why some people believe and what are those consequences so what are the consequences and because some people will suck all this stuff in and say old the world's got it in for me and there is this kind of sense of paranoia among So you talk about people committing that So the radio waves can't get to them or whatever you know that they can't control me absolutely and that's kind of my laughed at the misconception is that that's who believes in a conspiracy theory when actual fact we're all susceptible to believe in. Issy and that big event happens we look towards that conspiracy as an answer so if we think for example climate change is and isn't happening the data will fight we're less likely to use energy efficiency but less likely to reduce our carbon footprint we could actually impact both me and also your listeners what they've seen as not engaging in those behaviors it could be quite dangerous Similarly if you believe vaccines are dangerous and their day to day faked you are less likely to want to vaccinate a child through again that could impact both me and also your listeners so if you looked at the m.m.r. And all the stuff about that in the past and the numbers dropped in there was this report into the measles mumps and rubella in the and eventually it was all discredited sort of saying this is not good or can absolutely and with that said conspiracy theories are really resistant to correction some of the research that I conducted I found people are exposed to conspiracy theories and they give in Kent to arguments such as vaccines are safe the conspiracy can't count in root in their belief system it's hard to really get 3 so interventions to kind of tackle these negative consequences are quite timely Is there a positive to conspiracy theories and early you kind of helps us feel as though we're in control it does do that births it can also make us for more or less in control so potentially quick quite temporal when we have bet that tragedy we feel better for a small period of time but then we start thinking oh actually are the government conspiring against me it leads to more mistrust so they indeed could be positives to conspiracy theories but they're potential quite temporal The problem is without any conspiracy theory it's very easy to say with anyone who brings any evidence the country well they would say that wouldn't be part of the conspiracy and it's a challenge to rethink how can we make the conspiracy count and the mainstream account equally whited So when someone gets the mainstream account of vaccines are safe whatever it is it is equal. Swayze as the conspiracy I can't but the moment they can spew to the scene to more influential whether on Twitter or on the newspapers they seem to take over beliefs why because it's so interesting and they're the so persuasive that when they make a mode that comes up a leaf system that's what we believe in and things that go against that belief we ignore So it's a challenge to join get on the same page so people can evaluate both sides of the evidence how do we know that you're not part of the conspiracy but if you can you're being paid huge sums of money to come up with a well i certainly we show our Fortunately I'm not I'm going to academic from Stanford University kind of trying to examine the problem you know that I'm guessing that's the truth of it that's the answer but it was much more interesting if there were lizard somewhere that we don't know about paying you millions on the I think it's I think you'll lose a person I really do I think you'll release it. Who knows there may be one lizard in the room there could be 2 both and this is the problem isn't it you know how do we know truth from conspiracy when we're not even sure if the truth is true anymore which I think makes I'm really interested in that as of course some conservatives have been proven to be true and it's makes a fascinating subject to weaken big sprawling research so you've been there now and tell me a bit more this t.v. Show you bring in now so this week I want to t.v. Show called Adam Moon's everything and it's educational show that kind of tackle some real world issues an episode this week is on conspiracy theories they talk about the conspiracy theories I'm so but also why people believe and some of the potential harm of conspiracy theories to be had me being involved with the script and kind of avoiding on discouraging and then they flew me out there to actually star and be experts in the t.v. Show which was a fascinating experience to be on set and to have makeup on which I don't wear makeup so that was a really kind of experience in itself but it's really fun so it was we're talking about gender earlier and apparently men who wear makeup artist. Attention seeking according to one listener that I am a tender seeking Well you know if you don't wear make up on telly you do look like death but honestly that's just the way it was Los Angeles like thanks so much really it was really fun it was very different to Stoke on Trent It was very different so much so much warm and still contained but I only got to spend a little better time there but it was a great experience where can we see you on the box then it's on Tru t.v. Which is mostly in America fortunately but it will be clips and I believe will be new k shortly as well but he definitely and I know we're on the You Tube channel Yeah I do if you were something you'd be up for doing more of going out to America it was definitely challenging and there were at had a script as I say so I definitely don't envy act is it was a whole new experience for me where they would say no to any future I don't know but I def enjoyed it never say never I'd love to get you into one of our phone ins one day on conspiracy theories where people can throw some Atterson up and maybe you can try and explain what's going on in their heads not whether true or not but why we believe all this stuff because it is so interesting Joe students find it fascinating it's absolutely always trying to put Mr into the Institute of Research show has had no impact absolutely they love it is so interesting thanks so much for coming in for having me and thank you Dr Dan Joly with us from. The University of stuff which are the right stuff at university and talking about the psychology of conspiracy theories it's one of these programs where they kind of take an idea and try and demystify and try and get some kind of truth about it you can see it if you can get tru t.v. Over here you'll see on that in a couple weeks time maybe but the easiest way to look is on the You Tube channel Adam ruins everything just search on there from tomorrow and you'll be able to see Dan talking about conspiracy theories if you know someone or you are someone who subscribes to conspiracy theories quite happy to talk them through with you this afternoon I know no answers and you might say well he works for the b.b.c. So he's in on it as well oh. 178-2208 double on the way in the next 20 minutes on b.b.c. Student George proud of where we lead b.b.c. Radio Stoke. So as I said just before the headlines has been lots of talk in the car. The softer name in the last hour actually to reason May's been updating M.P.'s of what's going on regarding the European Union the prime minister has insisted that the ball is in their court went on to say that progress has been made since a speech in Florence last month Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn though claimed the government was making a mess of the negotiations go to Westminster and the B.B.C.'s political reporter Peter Saul pick what were the key points then from threesome a speech this evening how shit was she's actually still on her feet responding to questions from M.P.'s at the moment so you'll be pleased to hear there's no sign of the cough which she struggled with the party conference speech last Wednesday but I suppose what she what was what I noticed really throughout the speech was how bullish she sounded she was keen to sound very positive about the negotiations she wants to up the ante on Brussels to give some extra momentum to that sources have a listen to what she had to say achieving that partnership will require leadership and flexibility not just from us but from our friends the 27 nations of the e.u. And as we look forward to the next stage the ball is in their court but I want to stick it will receive a positive response and the prime minister went on to say that there was a new dynamic in the negotiations he said there's been progress since the speech that she gave in Florence last month on issues like health care for e.u. Citizens living in the u.k. On British citizens living elsewhere in Europe and Social Security as well and she also said that it is the government's responsibility to prepare for every eventuality including the possibility that she walks away from the guy shouting table entirely with no deal struck and actually the same time this afternoon the government released 2 white papers which set out in a bit more detail those contingency plans for for no deal whatsoever on practices that you mentioned a new dynamic there I'm not sure dynamic is a word that many would use for these negotiations why is this seemingly so little progress Yeah it's a. Not a word that the Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn would use he actually in response said that 16 months on from the referendum no real progress has been made but also over in Brussels you know they look at this from a completely different perspective to reason they said that the ball was in the E.U.'s court will they say well no the ball is in the U.K.'s court and they feel that very little information has come from the u.k. In terms of its negotiating position so there is still no agreement in black and white on the rights of citizens on the question of the Northern Irish border on the rather thorny issue also of a potential divorce settlement for the u.k. As well and the the issue I think that reason may is facing also is the fact that she is perceived as now a weaker leader she gambled away her majority in the election earlier on this year and perhaps there is a feeling in Brussels that she's there's no need anymore to see ground so what's the likelihood of them not reaching a deal well in economic terms the consensus is that that would be pretty bad for the u.k. I'm pretty bad for Europe as well obviously British businesses rely heavily on their trade with Europe and vice versa so no companies want to be having to spend significantly more money overnight because of politicians walking away from negotiations but it is a possibility you remember at the start of the negotiations to resume a saying that no deal is better than a bad deal and as the talks sort of progress and not much seems to be happening some of her Conservative backbenchers are getting a little bit twitchy about it and some of them want her to get a you know to to get more stringent with the e.u. For example the backbench it's been a Jenkins saying that she must be prepared to walk away on the other side of the coin though you've got all of the more pro European conservatives who say it would be utterly disastrous for for Britain to reach no deal long term with the e.u. So as ever those divisions within the Conservative Party are the subplots to the wider issue of Bracks is interesting times Peter thank you piece is still in Westminster the big. Did you grow up knowing what he did say we knew about a don't think our parents talked about to the dental towards the children which we wish they had a don't think sometimes it kept that kind of thing to themselves and they and I think now you need to ask your elder relatives the history of your family really. Yeah we are telling our families exactly that they should be as proud as soldiers the grandchildren we tell and then they go into the schools and tell them now. They have a really special reality might you say Linda he's not just for you is he he's for all of us yeah everybody yeah very proud and lucky that he survived and he did you know we carried on with his life it's best to date you know he was a remarkable man in that way that is amazing Santa tough that's been here for years of course and then he's got his own slab. I know it's just well all the family will be down here having a look at this there is one. Blanket outside the edge to the center there's another one so we actually have got it through. Radio. Young. Tell you I am watching lightning which I'm loving is the top of the Pops. But Top Of The Pops of the greatest hits from the hit parade. Because it's from 984 heading into 1905 and I'm George Michael's at number one ways Careless Whisper. And some of the songs that we write I think in as much as we don't play all of the songs from that era because some of them were terrible but the ones you still hear on the radio just brilliant and I think a really good era for music in fact from kind of late sixty's to. Mid late eighty's pretty good era for music as long as you're but selective about it but some really good stuff on there I don't fully understand why passenger by John was such a big hit think I'm missing something on that one that was on the other nights on the i Player is well worth seeing if you get a chance something else to Nile Rodgers and how to make him part music really good series as well if you like the music that's on the I play as well and will continue I think it's next Friday night because up against cold feet why didn't watch it when actually when time. And 9 o'clock Friday night if you fancy that spring up state with headlines to say you. 3 arrests have been made as police investigate the death of a 23 year old in a 44 year old man is being held on suspicion of murder planning permission has been granted to move the spit fire inside the Potter's museum to a special hangar outside so more people can see the iconic aircraft and in sport Wales manager Chris Coleman says tonight's crucial World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland in Cardiff as his biggest anything they've been involved in before Stokes Jo-Ellen is likely to play for Wales Harry still weeks a center and they've gone bust it we're flying and I think. We can bring a. Conversation you have to be part of unmarried men are very problem in society do you agree with this is the Indian conspiracy I don't know where we got it wrong. Radio Stoke this look ahead to what's happening tonight poetry a music festival kicks off in which over the course of the week musicians and poets will grace the town performing reading string questions Nigel Stoney is one of the founders Hi Nigel. I'm very well thank you I'm much better than your opening act comes will cause the real Is everything alright everything's good yeah but you know we organize which is 203040 gigs at the festival every year so the old ones down 2 to go wrong but we got an amazing week ahead you know we got the famous names of some you know very excited tell us a bit more about what is happening then Ok Well we've got iconic poets like the poet laureate. Probably one of the 5 most famous living coach in the u.k. And there near the weekend we've got some amazing music coming up we've got. On Friday night we've got Sarah Payne who globally the rock band playing an acoustic show none of which if it all got Tom Robinson of course is one of your fellow b.b.c. Presenters. Yeah I'm a brilliant musician many people will remember the. It's of the late seventy's and right through the eighty's Thomas coming to lunch which was this original band. Saw the. Motorway and baby and all that were you know it's the 40th anniversary of 246 a motorway so he's out celebrating that with the band and that Saturday afternoon and then which civic We've also got best role is a wonderful single He sings with Jools Holland band on Sunday afternoon and I'm not going to repeat myself but you know I'm going with this Mart Radcliff is bringing his amazing band called Galleon blast on Sunday afternoon so we've got a very varied week with very very excited about their Gilmore on Saturday Night Music and this poetry live every day in months which all week I haven't got far from the list because for most part for me when I don't anticipate the travel expenses been too high on that one you never know if. She is fabulous as well you've been doing this for years now it's nearly 10 years old is it getting any easier to organize or not 90. It's a lot fun to organize it is hard work but it's something we didn't go into lightly we really wanted to bring a celebration of original music and poetry to Nantwich we knew it wouldn't be easy but one which is a beautiful town and it's also a very in bracing sound if something is done well not which comes out in support you know that's the message we've kept getting back over the years the festival has got bigger it's not just about the volume of stuff we put on we aim to keep the quality high and it's great you know we're the beginning of the we were genuinely all very excited we've got a great shame I think poetry's going through a bit of a resurgence in live performance poetry where you actually see the person who wrote it reading after and talk me through the story well the thing is I think the very word carries a lot of high brow that it doesn't poetry you know I love poetry always read poetry and fewer people listen to people read coaches or listen to music obviously but I think what it's money should do I hope over the last 1020 years it's shared some of that stigma you know like you say lively performers pose with a junker for Clark at the festival twice what the sea is as rock and roll as funny as they come from brilliant young poets and you know we were very keen on giving them a stage as well as the established poets we've got this year it sounds like it's going to be a great week to be in and it's where can people find out more Nigel Wilson music festival dot com has got all the information. Something going on in lunch which every night this week there's something I like to think the something for everyone our youngest performer on stage will be 8 and our oldest performer on stage that I know of will be 80 very shortly so I think we've got it all covered but I'll tell you this time next week fans like. If there was one show and you have the last ticket which one would you part with which one are you desperate to see this year well best Rollie I mentioned is one of my. Favorite Thing is she's from Bristol she sings with Jools Holland she's got a beautiful voice and I wouldn't miss her for the world afternoon crown so that be the woman Ok good so she can talk again next week. When you can relax a bit. Look up on line if you fancy going there are so many things going on. Too much to list to be honest a big week in which if you want to find out more look from them to which words and music festival online you'll be able to find all the details there let's find out what the weather has in store goes has got the latest for us we've got some clouds around the region at the moment but so that is going to start to produce a bit of drizzly rain as we head into this evening and overnight but otherwise it should be a try night and fairly mild actually with temperatures holding up quite nicely into double digits of around 12 Celsius across the north Africa and South Asia will be left with some drizzly bits and pieces of rain through the morning tomorrow as well but it should be a largely dry afternoon with some pleasant spells of sunshine and a touch warmer to see highs of 16 Celsius tomorrow but tomorrow the remnants of x. Hurrican 8 begin to take effect and they'll be affecting the northwest of the country by tomorrow night so that's going to rain and stronger winds we get the knock on effects of that with some outbreaks of rain and strong winds through tomorrow night and into Wednesday that one could turn a little bit heavy at times but specially so across the north but then it all starts to fade away and it dries up into Wednesday night as a ridge of high pressure builds for Thursday and for the rest of the week it's a mostly dry picture with some pleasant spells as Sun shines a misty mornings and temperatures almost touching 20 Celsius by the time we get to the weekend say very pleasant indeed summer's on the way back Chris is on the line in May we mentioned earlier on conspiracy theories and the doctor of psychology from Stanford University who is gone over to America to film a t.v. Show in Los Angeles looking conspiracy theories his research city. Not whether they're true or not but suggests that most of us buy into them for reasons of wanting to fail in control of our lives Chris what worries you what kind of things are you likely to feel a little conspiratorial about oh my God Well a couple of years about 4 years ago I had a small and. I knew what it could say and then a couple make into real on calling the conspiracy theories about television why I'm terrified of a wife I to kill millions exploding my. Well I'm convinced that a lot of this I mean I read all this but if you know I was reading all kinds of articles it really blows your mind what's going on and the web cam and I'm sure 'd a paper familiar with people buying seeing the web cam from across the other side of the world if you're not careful it's all about control of I think a lot of this technology is about controlling and watching what you believe on television I haven't had a television for 20 years and I would not have one of those big flat. Screen. Screens in my home at all I would not have it because I would feel that I was based on this article one terrified of my smartly they talked about the microphone in camp cameras and monitoring what you watch and watching something that actually watching something that you don't want people to know about you could find yourself . And the world we live in game with all the technology designed to trip people up on television not what they were 3040 years ago well the least smart T.V.'s My mom and dad have got one and they didn't know what they are smart T.V.'s T.V.'s connected to the Internet and you press a button and you get things like player all for which is Channel 4 wake. Download the shows and watch them whenever you want know that and then if you pay you can get Netflix and Amazon Prime and all the other stuff great my mom and dad have got one of these they're not connected to the Internet they didn't know when the guy in the shop didn't tell them they need to connect it to the Internet. But they're all right then in your world they're right because nobody is spying on them because it's no hooks up. To them I know I mean. Well I better not because I mean all of that have. Come to the web. Boxes Well that's a monetary cost as well that really sort of. Well well this is a device allows you to connect to other people and interact with other people and have fun while I'm well I mean that might be possible and I was a bit like. Chris a bit like saying if you don't want you if you don't want to catch a cold never leave your house I mean well where do we draw the line we wrap ourselves up in cotton wool but then we're not going to much fun only. Well it depends you know way way you look. I don't mean you just a lot of. Light but I mean that that people are going to fall and that was. Not you know. Calling and a lot of now. We move. Through the week because lots of people. I think. But I will be back tomorrow afternoon. And. You know. It's. As again. As a. But . It's.
