Sorry and I'm sitting in for the lobby Danny pike on Sussex breakfast this morning they were talking about businesses on the High Street that got us thinking what is the secret to a great town center is it the mix of shops is it down to the events to put some Or is it something else now Tunbridge Wells which is 6 miles from where I live down the bottom is fantastic that it's got the pantaloons It's got little coffee shops it's got a fantastic little gardening shop it's got a butcher's it's got all sorts then you go up the high street that's fine you've got lovely little cafes G.D.S. And Sopranos and he's even got the ivy now and you keep walking up the hill and then you've got a few more shops and then you get to the left hand side and it's boarded up. It's been boarded up for years and years and years where the new cinema was all opposite Trinity Arts Center and then when you go up to the precinct it's practically closed down completely it is all fallen when you go into the mall it's like I don't know it's like some really awful 70 is American film in kind of dull Technicolor So what makes a great town. Well Crowborough which is 2 miles the other way they have French markets and I have this that and the other and we have Christmas trees and new little restaurants are opening up and it's really sweet. And loads of supermarkets So where what Times has a great town center I don't know let me know where you think the best prettiest town center is in Sussex or sorry and tell me why text me. A rain I know I know we're looking at the rain however today we're talking about high streets now if it is raining where do you take cover in your high street have you got coffee shops have you got little tiny restaurants have you got little bars little sound wage bars and if it's sunny have you got somewhere that you can sit out and talk to each other and watch the world go by what makes a good town center Now if you go into where my daughter lives she lives in Hackney she lives in Ridley Road Nama she's always lived around Hackney you walk down the road this independent shop says shops are selling plants so shops are just selling coffee little grocery shop shops are selling brushes and pots and pans and all sorts of stuff and it feels alive yes I'm arguing for independent straws do you have a high street that has independent stores now when when I was growing up saying Israel is just started but I remember queuing up at my mom at the cheese counter the women had that little white neck so on and they used to cut the cheese with the bits of wire and you chatted you stood and it was lovely wooden couples behind them and there was a greengrocer's across the road and I can remember a winter time the rain on the pavement used to reflect the oranges of the Tangerines with satsumas when they came in. And we had shops that you could have a dance studio I can remember and there were shops that you would sit down and you date that moved into shops that sold Beigels or bagels which was fantastic that you lots of those of close now but I'm really intrigued to know what you think makes a really good high street is it for its social activity is it because things are convenient is it because they put on fantastic little festivals where you can buy garlic straight from from hanging garlic bulbs what makes a high street a good high street call me on this telephone number 080-587-1004 extension 6 or text me right on top of 3 Start your message with the word radio. Now let's hear from some towns and to see what they're doing to drive businesses Claire Bailey is a retail expert and founder of future high street summit Good morning morning how are you Oh very well thank you I'm not going out my local I think that that's exactly why I'm asking where are you located Oh I actually live in a small market. Heavily populated by very. Independent. Why is it a good high street because it sounds that I mean you're going to go out and have a coffee and whatever the rain what makes it such a good high street. Well I think can something is good like knowing the name web freaks that just like anything it's a creaking a high street in a mall sort of micro business thinking looking at it like he was a typical live and enjoy time in this area that was. Saturated and then actually having Town Center Management who proactively go out makes a big success of the service providers who can satisfy the needs of the local community now you founded future high street summit what was the turning point for you why did you form it. To believe the depth of the hype that's as I say they look about the transformation. You like to change but they proposition and also found that the high street had and it was the same old same old everywhere you went there was some shining with like out there across the U.K. Who were actually showcased then House to really bring people back to the child and change with the activities whether it be family focused on whatever but they were doing very well and they were bucking the trend and to me it was about those types of things that are exactly what was available outside and there are some great places tell me tell me 3 of them. Well let's look at the names then Bryce and 1st stop for the sex the night shift people go that. Amazing day out with. Both can enjoy. And they could actually give diners an amazing that's what they think then you look at places like the Cathedral Quarter they understood what the needs and wants of the area was and they work hard to bring in retailers that wouldn't typically get exits because they're like. That because the business improvement district phoned them up and said we thought of a you know we think the profile of our local community product they saw a lot and they got some amazing tree and I suppose another that's they if you could . Think of any place you know in love as a tourist destination Lincoln one of my nearest town convict this improvement group working all that with their shop and create activities and markets and fun things the family is a drive the boat both a local community and also stories and it's just about thinking vibrant and reminding people of what's on that also that we are brilliant that's kind of I may come back to you can ask don't disappear just yet because I'm moving now to council to PETA but just cabinet member for Horsham town center Good morning South ready. You're not so good for you just gave me maybe thought. Oh of course you are listen every one of us is deeply important young man but now how much is the high street in the grip of high rates which is why so many of the shops are closing. I think. I think the problem in the recent. Fall is trying to write. And some of the big stores of it he found their rates have dropped. Some of the smaller stores of sound the rates of increase but there's a good reason for this because what they do has changed little shops that have very few customers going through or changed into vibrant so coffee shops we've got so many shops here that but rate is in the ports and we are looking at it overall councils ready and. It's me sorry go on well I was going to say you don't want to penalize people for their success do you don't know that it's a question of trying to get the right balance. And but everything like that rates and rents need to be sought. But. My. Horse is really doing quite well actually we've got very few tea shops we've got a good mix of shops and I suppose the biggest thing 3 besides the independent shops which go down to Main the high street right alongside We've also got ready a rather nice smell as well which we've got some of the bigger trucks and it's so. Important as a councillor PITA is it for you to see independent shops coming in and now if we if we're looking at a possible brick sit without a deal and if we're looking a possible possible recession which is what they're talking about many people don't have excess cash they don't have you know money going into the pot people are not spending so much and they're saving because things have become so expensive. I think. I'm just losing the thread slightly of what you're close to and what I'm saying how important a little independent shops and how they stay open they are particularly in the airport and we're running various schemes 30. In fact have one this week to look at how we can help shops always see councils like all over the world or herds the for the things like that we don't have a lot of money so you can't pump anything in but shops are important we've had an explosion in the Horsham of coffee shops restaurants and things like that we've got more on the high street that used to be dead now it's literally full of restaurants which are full which is very good it's encouraging but independent shops are important we've gotten a vantage we have quite a mix of them I mean it was and some years ago they did a survey which said that the more coffee shops in the more restaurants you have the more affluent your society is quashing and particularly affluent Yeah I'm not boasting but we're in the southeast the engine as it's called well the pompously. Quite a lot of our people of our residents work in London. And quite a lot of people we've been finding who've lived in London are now selling their houses in London because they can get so much money for them and coming down to a quarter of we've got quite a big building. Thing going on the a large number of new houses being built and people like who should one of the main advantage to the haven't said yet is parking and that's one of the things you won't go to a town if you have to drive around Brighton I heard talked about but it's very difficult now to park in Brighton but in Washington we've got about 15 plus. Speck across the we've got a new part in the center of things so if you can guarantee a province but if you go back. Again our Says you counsel Peter Burgess if you don't mind holding the line in case I come back to you because I have to leave 930 when you know well no you victories to go thank you so much for talking with us. Thanks thanks a lot Peter Amanda masters you are from experience Guilford I am indeed a good morning good morning how lovely So how do we actually experience Guilford is it a good town center Well I'm extremely biased it is the perfect time center of Islay I'd like to echo what class that just now about town center is having to know the needs of the people to go there or potentially go and it's offering something for everybody all ages and all making it is accessible he possibly can. So he said just I was talking about independence we have over a $125.00 in the town center line and the thing about independence is that they offer variety choice point of difference and locals are extremely proud of fiercely loyal to them because they love the let's face it is independent businesses are generally people who live in the area so they care really really care about the town. But then also to people inward so people here a visiting the town center the found something different that they won't find everywhere else so if I was to come to Guilford Where would you send me for coffee where would you send me for lunch where would you send me to have a facial and where would you send me to park my car OK I'll stay out there with the last one 1st if I'm a party. Thing is easier with technology now so there is an app for Guilford the official Guilford app which is free to download and that will find your parking space so before you come into the town you know where the vacant spaces are you don't have to drive around and around and around for ages to found one you can find out why so technology's been our friend in that respect in terms of what has Kofi or so to say we've got over Space Day restaurants and cafes in the town center so you know you can choose a cuisine 151620 different cuisines from across the globe to pay really and if you're coming in for spa treatment Well we've got about 20 different places you can go and relax and be pampered and we ALL THOSE a bit about don't we really yes we jointly will do a man of the modern Rejali will do house house kill for the ever taken a hit I mean what did Tom Ridge Rose I think the moment is so sad to top that so many shops so shop and we've been promised this on the other we haven't got it did that ever happen to Guilford or has it just been a steady increase Guilford is not unlike other towns and cities across the U.K. Everybody's experiencing something because of the retail landscape as it is at the moment however Guilford has a lower vacant unit right the national and regional average were about 7 percent which is brilliant but it's a place making is the important thing but it's a strange phrase that place my concern pause and I think Clay would probably agree with that it's about the event she put on is about the markets that you have it's about things like skill for Shakespeare Company for Fringe Festival and yeah yeah yeah I think something different style is you know if you're to take a 100 should be something for you every time you go to Guildford. You are brilliant Tom Bassett There are mounds of thank you for thank you so much let me return to. You you've had to work out for the PETA badge is said and you've heard what Amanda said having very unique places but But what a man is just said is event so how important is an event to the High Street critically if something is fine for Paul and brings people back because they think well this looks interesting we'll go and have a poke around and when they did they discover all rediscover what's on their doorstep they when I was going to an event. Or place my cousin said she is the price like making is an actual profession and I didn't invent all those kind of people a comfort to learn how to put on town center events how important they are and you see hounds up and down the U.K. Doing things like trails where they've got the statues they ship left and tango in it oh yeah yeah yeah yeah I know and I mean yeah you can kids can go and find them they got them out but they take them around the town makes it fun and interesting and then they tell them all the charity these things like the. Thing apart from going tomorrow so you might think well I'm going to go take for example killed today because my kids will like to do whatever trail they've got in place they might win a prize So how does it have to learn about the history and well you know that you accidentally happen across the businesses that I've always been that somehow you might have forgotten oh my it never even notices and it's just about regular repeated exposure to the businesses in the town and brings the place to life now what about places I mean you have a council of Peter Burgess talking about new houses and the influx of blow ins from London there's money but what about areas that don't have money that have boarded up I streets where there's not a lot of money just around where social housing is needed and there's groups of. People who are literally being left behind Well I think that's where one politics all definitely doesn't work when talking about how and how effective the relatively absolutely stilted and wholesome but there are plenty more that on not and in that case potentially They also have a developed retail that retail copy could repurpose into housing officers bring businesses who want the retail in other sectors back into the community Porter working population the community reduce the amount of we retail and get the balance right so that people that live work and socialize in an area have what they need whilst also putting a population back into the council and to use the businesses that remain and of course the businesses that drawings there will be very different they may well ride with sort of what you might call the lower end retailers but there are people that believe that the alleys the little the discounters a man doesn't work in a more affluent high street that if well let me tell you that money the little link the clear in tell me go in there all the more wealthy actually interesting there but this is something I have a baby in my bonnet when we moved in this to where we live we live in East Sussex but on local cinema was in Tom Ridge wells and it was fantastic people drop their kids off went shopping came out that cinema was removed it's still a building site and if you want to go to the pitches now in where we live you have to drive down a horrible marriage Way It's horrible how does the local community fight to get back community things like cinemas and community centers but I think it's a case of if you don't use it you lose because a business called the pain it fell on on perhaps because the need to actually make money and. They're not making money or they're not selling tickets are an uprising or getting. People buying tickets they can't sustain themselves Alternatively the. Owners consider that the building is not earning enough it's current and I think we want to develop Yeah well the redevelopment which was meant to take place has never taken place so we're just loads of businesses went and it's boarded up and there are more places being boarded up and so people who want to go to the pictures unless you draw if it's really really kind of difficult so. I wonder is people power the stuff right so I mean you founded. It can be gone I think we've seen for example pub which was that the closure of the up and down the country thing closely and then people part of got behind it at her own let's make this the community and let's work together to portray now a little bit of a convenient shop maybe a Post Office character and suddenly that club which might have only made money for what it did in the past is making money from a convenience retailer and it's Post Office account and now it becomes viable but it's about working out again what is it that the community wants and if you haven't got place management which was what Amanda mentioned somebody responsible for looking at the whole let's tick off ribbon area making sure that parking that simple available appropriately pride everything in the community the community then you will want to sell a case but when you look to the community and say well what is it that you actually need and want and how are you going to help them achieve it certainly things start up and. You're as good as Amanda Claire Bailly How lovely to talk to you thank you for getting our minds were going bless you thank you for talking to us now I'm talking to Lillian in Hailsham Good morning and we've known and now you are 94 years of age what have you right now 3 more months. 93 and a bit. The B.B.C. Travel Center. With travel updates 080587 want to enforce a 6 B.B.C. Sorry travel you trust. Me. remember well this all sorts of places I lived in Wapping for many many years that had nothing and now it's got all sorts of trendy this that some the opposite and of course there has to be progress and of course things have to change but if you forget the people who are living there and it changes to 17 barbers and 48 charity shops perhaps we need to look at why this is happening telephone me on this number please cool B.B.C. Sorry our 805871 armed forces. All text me on a monitor her trees down to your message with the word radio and let's talk about your high street Betty in Crowborough Good morning. I used to live along the road from you by the way. Yeah yeah. Yeah Yeah right yeah what developed you know. Well those little houses believe it or not they used to belong to. An accountant who D. Forwarded several people including us and ended up going to prison for $6000000.00 with the fraud really so those little houses across the road from the garage on the A $26.00 I think it is they've there's one left for sale and they're tiny little things but they've got a great view so that shifted there and there's so much that's happening now in Crowborough with the building but what do you Betty make of the high street. Well rather pathetic isn't it alone no I'm in my eighty's ready and walking is not so good for me I tend to on must say waitress a lot just bought the car and go straight into way 2 hours or across the road. But there's one or 2 shops around there the years and a fine the 2nd time show is quite useful I mean we've only got to now have my my all wonderful Help the Aged and the Sue Ryder shop but do you wish that we had more variety in the High Street. It wouldn't really RINGBACK matter to me to tell you the truth I think at my age. I have family there mostly bright. Tall ness except where there is quite a selection of show yeah but I mean let's forget you and I for a moment or next just think about the Barra as somebody called the Kroeber recently what would you if you had to design the high street what would you design as what would you put in it. Good question no one to tell you the truth my age sufficient for me. I think I would need to ask family about what they would like well I'm going to say I'm going to set you back in your house in your armchair you can listen to the show and if you think about how you're going to design the high street give us a ring that's betting Crowborough Challis in Guilford Good morning oh hello hi Now you've had a wonderful big-O. From somebody from Gilford about your. Amanda mosses from experience Guildford she made it sound fantastic Do you think the covert is fantastic stone right down the path and has said yes Ilford used to be a lovely market town you had more individual shops when I think about it we have 4 fish else there Ryan said the mouse we had 3 say you had good choice of all that sort of thing if you wanted it and now the 2 shops we've got this will all of them relieve the main shops this fast and really all of us old to Paypal we say we never go to kill now can rename it well no because by the time you've negotiated. And then you have to walk miles in the show to get anything and if you can find an assistant to point you. In the right direction it's better to stay away we where would you where we are because of the history for a moment when Where would you now go to feel that you are in a thriving market town where would you go now to change the re in a. Major something down the capital of the is for one thing Chichester was much cheaper for a car parking thank you suppose it's right And secondly you've got they never let their shops get too big this mode I mean Marks and Spencers for example now they're now one big shop you've got one clothing and that sort of thing and you've got the other one in St. Yeah yeah around the room where they made us laugh but how in the few lived in that area shyly. 66 years oh I love you 66 years so can you can I ask you to cost your mind back when you were in your kind of late thirty's early forty's how what was the shopping experience then what in Guilford yeah left late you could come in you had all all the shops you had everything they were all lots and lots of small smaller shops not these great big fast shops of course they've gone from the high straight through to North Street now which in in the old days those 2 rows were kept separate so none of the shops went running through so you know you know things that I mess things like shops sell wool missing girl friends Exactly and so do you think that these huge supermarkets and the town planners have got it wrong I think I have I really do I mean all right it does say anything about going into a Guilford I never do but if you go in and have a coffee in the morning and different things like that that's fine but we don't want the vast amount that we've got now it's the coffee shops all restrooms you know you want shot that you can buy things I mean I have to go now on to a catalogue to buy my clothes because mine are used to have a lovely little shop in. The straight always bolt all my clothes Well now they're these big shot you can put anything down and you're trying to firm sit in rooms it's just not it's not on as far as I'm concerned Moshe really I think you should. Sit down design the high street send it to the Berlin planners thank you so much for calling us thank you lucky that Sherry and Guilford this is Michael Bexhill has loads of independent shops cafes and restaurants and so many different events going on lovely atmosphere classic cars sixty's revolution it was HUGE all day and evening celebrations so many different shows on the sea front and Delaware and towns brilliant events through the year well. Grid within minutes of each other the national grid is now provide the energy regulator with an urgent into rim bought into the power that affected large areas of the U.K. a Week ago by tomorrow. Began by asking him about the scale of the problem. Complete national. Black hair effect in London the southeast the midlands the South West Yorkshire The North Face Cold War And last but not least well as I meet Blacktown the East Coast Main Line slug trying certain someone just pulled the plug traffic laws across the country were affected and more importantly of course hospitals some of which failed to get their backup systems running and you know it's pointed to. A big question mark hanging over the the industry in general as to why this happens and is there a possibility of it happening again and does anyone know why it happened now not the moment they regulator itself is asking for an interim report on the causes of the blackout from National Grid and National Grid got so the close of business to know and to deliver that report followed by a comprehensive one no later than September the 6 the national grid is expected to make a statement later on today but I won't hold your breath for any reasons given as to why this has happened now the conspiracy theory says saying Ah is this Has this been done by hackers who want to discredit the powering and wind farms than anything green is possible. Our data are just perplexed by the how thing because 2 of the companies apparently one was a gas turbine generator of a lecture A-Z. The other one was a wind farm the wind farms told to reduce its output for which it was piped compensation of about $100.00 grain Now before people start screaming that's fairly normal the national grid is the the utility that is used to transport the electricity once the power company is of generated it from their factories to our homes hospitals and the like so when you see the the parlance across the countryside that is the national. Create it's narrow privately owned company and it's a monopoly and of course this is going to attract a lot of political criticism some point from people who say you know this just isn't working nice to be nationalized again but yes it needs to be in the hands of the state is what people are saying yes I mean you're saying that nobody really knows you on telling as it is which means that it could happen again could it oh yeah I mean these there were suggestions which have been refuted there were 3 near misses before this actual event as a side that's been denied but yet it's happened once what can happen again and why did I tell to come is to reduce output when an actual fact what we needed was more so this is a balancing act who has told them to reduce it and who's a national grid the national grid so the National Grid are owned by who. Their Own Boss shareholders is a footsie $100.00 company and the bill which in this case is under 1000 by my mike 2000 compensation climbs every year it's a normal run of the mill thing when you when you have a exciting edition of Coronation Street or a big football match everyone rushes for the cat laughter it's all during halftime and there's a big surge you know tricity demand is the national grid as to fulfill the increasing demand it's like a balancing act that a tight tight electricity from the past supplies and give it to the homes and I think tight when it's needed how much is needed the now much is going to be people now pretty much everywhere was affected by this you know what there are places that weren't affected and if so why. I understand Lincoln wasn't affected. Are just think it's possibly the mike up of the grid itself is a very complicated structure electricity supply in this country you have one of those companies was a gas turbine supplier of electricity. Another one was a wind farm there's solar farm there's new clear power. Until recently there's been coal for power it's a hodgepodge and that's cold you know if we're going to put so much reliance on electricity in the future electric cars we need a steady reliable source of that generation and it doesn't look at the moment is over going to get it so National Grid are going to be compensating the wind farm what sort of punishment will they get from whom. I would imagine it's going to be a fall and if the thigh all fall they'll be a fall on which you might you are in are our eyes water I mean really regulators do have power in this country they've been safe in the past you look at the banks where they've been fined billions of pounds one telecom company recently was fined 183000000 pounds so you know don't don't hold your breath he could be that if national grid isn't full they'll be pumping right font on the why and does that then mean that all our electricity bills are going to go up because they're going to have to pay the fine well it depends I work it but I wouldn't a thought that the regulator is going to stand for that I won't be allowed to possibly. Ride on 2 hours hopefully well they all me he can't thank you very much now we are talking about our high streets and we're talking about how what makes a high street fantastic and some of you think go for it is great some of you think it is some some of you think back feels great some of you are not so sure so lovely story in the newspaper this morning about a bandstand Mbeki where David Bowie did one of his 1st concerts and they've kept it open after 6 years of campaigning Grade 2 listed status so what would you keep We do have to have progress but at the same time we have to look at the environment you know there are certain places in France you can't build beyond a certain height so there is an independent places I want to hear from you where is independent and lovely What's your high street I want to build 3 Stop me a message of the word radio telephone me on this hour 805871046.
