Including the firing of live ammunition and when governments in South Asia found themselves and pickle over onions well that after this Hello I'm Tom what's with the b.b.c. News the Colombian president Duke a says he will launch what he calls a national conversation in response to a wave of deadly anti-government protests Mr Duke a declared he wanted to strengthen Social Policy and work towards narrowing the gap between rich and poor Matthew Charles is a journalist in the capital Bob a top he says the government has a big task ahead one of the problems with these protests it is it isn't just about one issue so it's quite difficult to see how they could gather around or think or set of demands that the government could agree to so President look at says he will start this national conversation but he hasn't even suggested that he would be there. And I think a lot will depend on the coming days and how the government does respond a man claiming to be a former Chinese spy has told the Australian authorities about alleged Chinese intelligence operations in Hong Kong Taiwan and Australia Wang arrived in Sydney on a tourist visa and is now applying for asylum there in an interview with Australian television Mr Wang said Beijing's covert agents had infiltrated the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong and the upcoming elections in Taiwan. News. Hello I'm Caroline Wyatt and welcome back to the world this week Prince Andrew the queen secondhand it said favorite son took the unusual step of agreeing to be interviewed by the b.b.c. At Buckingham Palace the interview shown last Saturday night focused on his friendship with the billionaire and convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein who killed himself in a New York jail in August 1 awaiting trial on fresh charges during 45 excruciating minutes the prince defended his 4 day stay at Epstein's home after the billionaire already been convicted of trafficking minors for prostitution the prince claimed that he went to stay in order to break off their friendship in person because he had a tendency to be too honorable He also said he had no recollection of meeting Virginia Roberts she's a woman who claims to be trafficked by obscene and made to have sex with his associates including with Prince Andrew on 3 occasions something the Prince has always denied as public outrage mounted Buckingham Palace issued a statement in which the prince finally distanced himself from Epstein and expressed sympathy for the victims of the late billionaire but it was too late and on Wednesday Prince Andrew announced he was stepping down from public duties be to hunt is the former b.b.c. Roll correspondent I asked him why Prince Andrew thought it was a good idea to let the cameras in the palace itself. The key thing there is what he knows that we don't know I think we don't yet know what was going on in the background that made him think he had to be on the front foot we don't know what level of interaction there has been between his office and the f.b.i. I suspect there has been some so we don't know what sort of questions the f.b.i. Had started to ask and the reason I say that is that what was one element of the many elements that were very striking in the interview was that sense of him is nothing to see here Garth I can't tell you anything it felt like it was a preemptive strike to show the law enforcement agencies in the United States that be pointless waste of time talking to him so I think that's an element we don't know whether or not the f.b.i. Is talking to Glenn Maxwell Prince Andrew's friend and a key link with the whole Epstein saga we don't know what may be in documents that may yet be released within the American court system and of course there's Epstein's diaries we know he kept them we know they were detailed there must be a fear out of thought in war circles that they may yet end up in the public domain so I think all of these factors came together and then you throw in Prince Andrew's character where he clearly believed that he could appear before us unfiltered unadulterated and at the end of the viewing we the public would accept we should give him a break and the key thing I suppose he did achieve to be fair to him is he stated on the record what he'd said in his statements consistently and frequently said I never had any sort of sexual contact with his accuser who used to be known as Virginia Roberts It is very unusual to see an interviewer asked point blank on television about allegations over the sex life of a senior member of the royal family there wasn't much mystique of the monarchy really after the end of that program it didn't even peek behind the curtain it sort of ripped away our members of the novelist Jeffrey Archer used to say that he would take you to the bedroom door no further we were right in the row bedroom so to speak in that television program I suppose it showed how high the. Stakes are and how determined he was to make it clear to us that these allegations were not true but I mean you know when a member of the British royal family has been asked if you've taken part in an orgy you know you're in a in a new place himself Britain or appeared not to have been advised that at least some expression of sympathy might have been expected by the viewing public for the underage girls who were trafficked or used by the late billionaire Geoffrey Epstein Well as I alluded to earlier there were many striking aspects of this interview and that really was the most catastrophic from his perspective because he'd done it in statements in the past he did it again in this statement when he in essence announced his retirement his sacking whatever word one wants to put on it where he talked about the victims but it was gob smacking Leigh missing from the interview no expression of regret or sympathy towards the victims and the other thing that was missing from the interview was an unequivocal willingness as you or I or any of our listeners would do which is to play ball if law enforcement agencies want to talk to he sort of carry out it it really chunky and clumsy really but he corrected that in the statement in the course the other thing the glaring thing that was an error in the television interview was that he didn't regret his friendship with a paedophile he didn't unequivocal regret it in the interview he has in the statement in the interview he tried to justify it by saying there was seriously beneficial outcomes for him from that friendship. How damaging has this been for the wider Royal Family Well I think that's the key bit and I think that's why in essence he has been sacked because what the wars always want to do when they have disasters and calamities and they had a fair few in recent decades is they like to lock it down to an individual and sort of deal with it with that person but what Prince Andrew did was to spread his toxicity much wider so right from the start his judgment yet again for the umpteenth time was called into question by this interview but he then called into question the judgment of his mother because he referred higher up as he put it the request for the interview and clearly the person he regards as higher up than presumably a god is his mother and so she was drawn into it she allowed her palace to be used as the backdrop for this interview not some anonymous hotel and in that palace we had Prince Andrew talking about a paedophiles behaviors being unbecoming so she was dragged into it by that and I think the other crucial damage for the monarchy by all of this was when it became an aspect of the British general election campaign I think that really is the most toxic bit for them when you have the 2 men who could be our next prime minister being asked on national British television about the monarchy and one of them the current opposition leader Jeremy call been talking about an institution needing improvement you can see why an institution the monarchy which is a dynasty that is desperate to survive then pretty swift remedial action that remedial action from the palace to cut Prince Andrew from his royal duties in effect to sack him who would have taken that decision I think we can say unequivocally that it wasn't Prince Andrew he would have been dragged kicking and screaming while clinging onto balustrades and bits of furniture gold gilt furniture as he was a made clear that this really was the exit that would have been him willingly doing it I think what's striking is the Buckingham Palace are very keen to frame it as. From the Queen given that her judgment was called into question over the interview in the 1st place and her judgment has been called into question the past in terms of her blindness towards Andrew and her indulgence of Andrew and her historic habit when dealing with family matters or being an ostrich and just putting your head in the sand and ignoring it so I think the palace is very keen for us to see it as the queen aged 93 the monarch the head of state of the u.k. And other countries taking that action but the reality is that behind it was the Prince of Wales Prince Charles the heir to the British throne because I had always thought we'd got to a point where he would have to go particularly after a big businesses started fleeing from him in big businesses normally are desperate to wrap themselves around a royal The minute they flee you know they're in trouble but I'd assumed there would be a delay until the Prince of Wales Prince Charles return from an official visit he's doing to New Zealand but clearly royals can sack by telephone so Prince Charles was absolutely involved what this points to is of a shift in the power in the British monarchy as always with the British monarchy we don't really see but with the 93 year old monarch Charles the Shadow King more and more decisions that the Queen might want to take she runs past him 1st and I'm with this one he would have been pushing it as Peter Hunt mentioned there Prince Andrew's interview featured in the general election campaign here in Britain but also by no means the outstanding feature is a political correspondent Rob Watson There's no doubting the most telling moment or should I say moments of the campaign this last week it was when a studio audience repeatedly laughed at both Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbin during the 1st television debates of the election loss you should understand the laughter of amusements but of derision and disbelief if you want to know what provoked such hilarity it was the moments of Mr Johnson answered yes when asked whether he thought the truth was important and when Mr Caldwell insisted Labor's policy on brac set was clear the studio audience's reaction was a reminder of a grim underlying truth about. Selection borne out repeatedly and national opinion polls namely that this is a contest not to select the most popular person and party as prime minister and government but rather the least unpopular one can't help feeling in a few months time this negativity could all prove very important aside from that the highlight of the week was the launch of some party manifestos basically what the parties promise to actually do should they win the election not surprisingly the ouse an out and see Bracks at Liberal Democrat party promise to stop Bracks says while the main opposition Labor Party led by the avowedly and proudly socialist Jeremy Corbyn also not surprisingly promised the most radical left wing agenda since 1945 of greater state involvement in every aspect of British life. For my part I have been in Scotland where as in Northern Ireland last week I heard repeatedly about how Brecht says which Scottish people voted against by 62 to 38 percent had rigged nights at the big and difficult constitutional question of whether Scotland's future lies in the u.k. Or as an independent country perhaps the most memorable encounter though was with not a Scot but a young Finnish student at Edinburgh University who told me Europe was now far more interested in British politics than it ever used to be but you guessed it as a cautionary tale of how not to do things robots and you're listening to the world this week the programme that tells you what happened in the past 7 days and white counts coming up what rising onion prices make politicians cry and if you want to listen to us again or previous editions tight b.b.c. The world this week into your search engine of the many dramatic days of the Trump presidency Wednesday's public testimony at the impeachment inquiry from a trump appointee brought the highest stoop Washington drama. Gotten someone to donated a $1000000.00 to the president's inauguration fund and was later appointed u.s. Ambassador to the European Union in his evidence he asserted that the president was demanding a quid pro quo from his Ukrainian counterpart Mr Trump would grant a meeting in the Oval Office in return for Ukraine announcing that it would look into 2 conspiracy theories both baseless in the on the Democrats and the son of one of his potential opponents in the next presidential election Joe Biden Mr sundered said he came to believe that u.s. Military aid to Ukraine was also in play and he said everyone was in the loop Aleem Maqbool is our correspondent in Washington it was certainly very damaging to Mr Trump because what is going on here is that Donald Trump has portrayed this whole process as something very partisan those coming forward are never trumpeters who just want him out of office and what we've seen all week is not only civil servants who don't really fit this bill and even you know decorated military veterans we have those like Gordon's arland who actually was close to Donald Trump who donated around a 1000000 dollars So a supporter of Donald Trump Hussein will this is how it was and it doesn't look good Gordon someone came out and said the words in his opening statement was there a quid pro quo absolutely someone also appears to be expanded the circle of those he says were aware of what was going on he brought into this the secretary of state my prepare and lots of others and we kept on saying that with David Holmes for example who is another man who gave testimony this week who was one of the diplomats in Kiev fear in the hill gave some fascinating testimony she was the lead national security adviser to the White House on Russia. And the e.u. Both of them suggested that this was something they were all talking about everyone involved in Ukraine policy felt that this was something that was going on there with those who went along with it it was a scheme being led by this alternative diplomatic track through Rudy Giuliani of course President Trump's personal lawyer who is leading this effort to get this military aid withheld until Ukraine announced and not by the way necessarily completed an investigation it was just the end nouns meant that it appears that the White House was looking for some had said through throws above them that it had been improper but it feels like it was many more people around who were aware what was going on and when it change minds among Republican senators I think those taking a step back would say that if there was a person out there who hadn't made their mind up about Donald Trump in the world they would look at the testimony that was given over the last week and say well it appears through the circumstantial evidence that he did a bad thing he was doing something on what Fiona Hill called a domestic political errand not for the good of the country but this is not about people looking at this with impartiality this is a political process not one Republican as yet has said they are going to vote for impeachment that's in the house and if he is to be impeached there will be a trial in the Senate there you need a 2 thirds majority for him to be removed from office 20 Senate Republicans would have to flip to support his removal from office there is no suggestion that one of them is going to do that as yet what is popular opinion in America stand on this now I mean are ordinary American. Glued to these public hearings on t.v. Outside Washington I've done a little bit of traveling around joining all of this and the sense is that people the 2 camps have just become more entrenched through this I have yet to meet somebody over the last 3 years who said I voted for Donald Trump and I regret that Aleem Maqbool it's all a plot by foreign enemies that center on has sought to dismiss the protests the broke out across the country over 50 percent rise in petrol prices protests that were forcibly quelled this week in some cases with live ammunition at the same time the government Tehran pretty much shut down the Internet that by Thursday it started to restore access whilst c. Of ash from b.b.c. Persian how many people have died Human rights organizations activists are saying at least $100.00 people have been killed but probably figures are but more than that yes it was a very severe brutal crackdown the government has invested heavily in its security it was always prepared for something like this so it's not as if the government was taken off guard not just the loss of life the damages done a lot of buildings were set on fire a lot of arson related attacks attacks on hospitals private residences so it was very destructive protests in the protests seem to have been very widespread how worrying for the government is that you would remember that back in 2009 Iran saw a huge on rest after the election which saw the victory of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that when I was called the Green Revolution but that was mainly concentrated in the capital in Tehran it was really initiated by the middle class that this was for the poor that's a bigger security challenge for the government the fact that it's done my poor people the fact that it covers so many other cities. In provinces because everyone was affected by this but it is also noteworthy as something for social Just look at the more affluent and a richer people were completely they stayed away from the protest unlike back in 2009 this was a protest of the poor the revolt of the more downtrodden where if you went to the more affluent northern regions of Tehran or other major cities you wouldn't have known that these protests are happening earlier this month we were examining how Iran's influence and power in other Middle Eastern countries was being challenged is that resends that the regime is generally losing the grip at home that it once had it's unlikely that because of these protests its influence will wane we realize as Syria was once a huge influence or a player in the Middle East and suddenly itself it became engulfed by domestic turmoil Iran has managed to crack down on this turmoil whether internal going on in Iran might affect its regional standings it hasn't so far what will happen is the u.s. Will think that its policy of maximum pressure has succeeded it has starved the people into revolting against the government the regime will think Ok any flexibility or talks with the u.s. Might be taken as a sign of weakness and encourage further protests so it will become both sides will become more entrenched in their position and that will both hurt the nuclear deal and it will probably escalate tensions already existing tensions in the region and what about the Internet it was being restored for people in Iran to once the end of the week health era was the shutoff while the protests were going on it was almost a total blackout net blocks which is a company which looks at the Internet shut down just said at the height of the protests only 4 percent Internet connectivity existed but it provided a golden opportunity for the government to test its plan for having international intranet and completely cut Iran off from the international Internet this is of course the nightmare for many Iranians who want to stay connected but that is the government's plan. It said that when I'm in prices rise in South Asia governments fear full well the price of onions in Bangladesh skyrocketed after the harvest in India will hit 1st by drought and then by heavy monsoon rains India and overseas sales to ensure domestic supply and bring down prices at home that left bank flying in emergency supplies from elsewhere the b.b.c. Is generally Mouli is in Mumbai and she told me when audience is so important it's actually across South Asia use lots of spices in pool here and on the inside something that you use the intensity or both spice it's pungent when you table that adds that distinctive there's so many of the dishes but also it's a bit of a that is available throughout the year because it's cultivated pork binds and you can store it up for months or on the days when you cannot afford or on the days when you can order by Bridget a bit from the market you can just you was in the end I was up to the state of Maharashtra produces most number of onions and in Maharashtra we have a film it's called on the about me which means onions it's supposed to be a poor man's food and onions are indispensable to those food here in that sense. Politically onions matter as well because it gives a godly came to power in 1980 with slogans that used the soaring onion price rises as a metaphor for economic failure by the previous government how worried are politicians by the current crisis we have seen in the past they've gone then brought down over the issue of price hike and audience but he was as a metaphor for that because it's supposed to be a very cheap vegetable and if the prices of something as cheap as onions are going up then that it's taken as an indicator for inflation that's why you see politicians trade the price hike when it's about onions it's an interesting thing because in the same country of India you see more than India doesn't produce much of onions and it's mostly produce investment state of Maharashtra so the farm us and exporters or traders in Maharashtra there are unhappy even the prices are going down but us people in the northern part of the country are unhappy been the prices go up and the politicians have to strike a balance between the 2 how do onion crises happen in the same things as the same back of climate change once and reinstall becoming more and more under Labor that isn't backed agriculture in many ways and as it is that we see irregular supply Orleans in the market throughout the Indian onions particularly delicious Are they better than anyone from elsewhere. The onions in this part of the world because they also have a slight meat in this in that this and that's what makes them unique and more tasty in my opinion because I love to cook with them there are certain communities leg Janes don't eat onions I thought some of the those when they are doing some worship or Rio's for that we don't know spicy or don't know if that is or they don't eat onions as well so be having moral issues that go without onions but to be frank I do not imagine my so cooking without any ins John having. Being the mother of a child with Down syndrome in Tanzania is not easy I was not comfortable to go to the street or public areas with my son because some people there were looking me for my sin a focus on this mother was seen as sinful because she has a son with Down syndrome it's something I never knew much about until 4 years ago when I gave birth to my son Chadron and was told he too had Down's. And for the b.b.c. World Service I am in my country Tanzania asking mothers what it's like to bring up a child with a condition. Where. I am going to meet this lady was a child with Down Syndrome she wanted me to Instagram I've never met her before this will be the 1st time I make time to be like. One 0. Oh oh oh my god. My home is beautiful. There's so many beautiful flowers and is that. Your money just I'm just wondering when Joe Biden's you know how are you human just like myself. I am just like job. Or the way they look alike completely so happy to make Nembutal. My name is chef and this is my own brother Justin. He has Down syndrome. Rather really likes playing with his stuff he likes touching things bright colors like Yeah and here he really likes people. Today I'm here with my friend Margaret Margaret we met in Instagram in today is my 1st time to meet her in real life you know one day I was watching on Instagram and I saw my friend post a picture of children your son in the she told me you can find a dismayed she has a son just like you send an Instagram message to me like I really want to tell you . I asked Margaret to read that 1st message to me Good Morning Dia Margaret I have a boy of 4 years old with a similar case like yours please I want to know your experience if you don't mind my baby name is your thumb he's very happy but he can speak stand or walk please share with me I remember that day I stay with my former very waiting for waiting what about your labors failure to use how did they accept Joel for some of them they know. And some of them he judges us that we have used our son for money rituals so that you can be read. This money ritual is a complicated believe to get your head round in Tanzania you can go to a witch doctor and ask them to cast a spell for something you want like money or power they which don't I will ask you for sacrifice so you could ask the witch doctor to make you rich and sacrifice your own child's mental capabilities that's what people who don't know parents of children with Down Syndrome think we have done but of course we haven't done this yet that they believe in Africa if we have someone like you just someone with a family. So I remember one day I would there. Feeding my baby in the text the message came it was a message from one of my client. That to messages she wrote that she won your people oh no yeah shame one your people or you have you would see her son for money a week. So that you can become rich. Why would she say that. That with the best experience I. Disagree my life. Nor did you do or did you say. I couldn't is going to continue to feed the baby. I just supported the baby don't then Meskin my young sister please help me. In that was shedding tears she asked me what is wrong I say no when I need to be alone. I went to the room I remember Craig a lot. I called my husband. And I told him. Someone we know. Our friend. Himself. Took a Leaving me that Courtney as I sat across from me on the sofa I felt so angry I wonder world to know that mothers like us did not do anything to influence whether we have children with Down's syndrome we did not go to each doctors this confrontation by text message affected Margaret's everyday life. Back then I was not comfortable to go to the street or public areas with my son because some people there were looking me as if for my sin or for person even when we go to the park. You can see some people the way they are looking at you. And if you are driving the car that you give them the answer that you have used your son for money in return. But I came to realize this is my situation in the House today. I'm happy with the way my son is now I can go anywhere with my baby I don't care how they look what you get from outside. You had to feel going to get to them that the mothers are hiding their tears for the same reason yes like Margaret I also suspect children a being he didn't from the outside world you hardly ever see children with Down syndrome in public and this is one of the things that make it even harder as a mother when I give birth I didn't know in making a book to don't single. Anything I feel like going there whether. There were. So many of them but we don't know. I want to know about other women out there. If it has happened to them. I just came from seeing my friend from I think she's now my really really good friend something that shocked me that we never shared that a friend of us actually sent a message saying that she has gone to a witch doctor to make them the way he is so that she can be reached. I promised my friend that I would find out if other mothers had also been accused of sacrificing their children to the witch doctor. We found one woman whose own husband had accused her of going to the witch doctor she doesn't want to be identified so we'll call her standby Rocca but at the very bottom what and I knew that I was above any requests there was a time I just used to keep my child in those you think of I'm one of them my husband said the child wasn't his he said that I had taken Barack out with the witch doctor to make him like this. Man that he has stopped bringing his friends to the house he was ashamed his family suggested the Down Syndrome came from my side of the family and he stopped taking us to his family gatherings. She says she had no choice but to look cuz son in the house had to work with. My husband never pays for anything for Baraka so I have to in my own mind I. I started going to the market to sell vegetables when Baraka went outside the neighbors would call him names saying he was a crazy. It is someone I didn't so I looked him in the house when I went to work. But I didn't take but I got to church every Sunday and one day on the bus ride home another mother told me about the special school he erode and is now doing better when only one of them said teacher told me that Down's Syndrome is not my fault. For. Barack is no 9 years old and this woman's husband to you doesn't let her take him to his family's gatherings both reach and poor are pressured to keep their children away from social events. In a more affluent suburb of Daraa slum I met 19 year old Some well. Some really Philip. Malika me me me me say it is name is some a good morning when up and often Ne Ne. Ne me now find out. Why when I knew I was there. He loves to take pictures of animals saw he takes pictures of. Their brother. And and. Rhinos his mother Sophie takes him everywhere My sure the surprise of those she. Nose How did people react when you took some to public events they shocked one day I went to the wedding of one of my friends with some. People just watching a team then my friends asked me Are you comfortable coming to the event like this with. Sand like this I said Yes I'm comfortable what's wrong with it I said someone is my son he's my friend I go with him everywhere he said You are very tough woman then they told me that there is one of their friends here with a son like somewhere they used to look in their room and they wash him by throwing a water from far away because they don't want even to touch him. Some friends are telling me you can use this side types of heads to help your son to be better have you have a come across such things why people advised us is to go to the which looked. And we were into the digital with somewhere because it was the office when we left him so much it was so expensive we believe that someone will be hailed a Down syndrome which is not true. We finally found that it we wasting our time we lost our money and male friend may have never go to the witch but there Lie Down syndrome there's no cure of dancing I'm just accept the down assume child just send the child to school it's interesting that Sophie used to think she could cure a Down syndrome as it shows that she didn't understand what caused it not understanding the cause of downs seems to be at the root of all the believes I've heard so far. It's something Dr Morrow has to deal with when parents come to see him I met him at their Islam's main hospital most of the time they have questions what causes this wise my son or my daughter like this most people believe it drenches from a chorus to being bewitched. In service how do you explain to them that it's not something to do with their beliefs all children with Down Syndrome look like they have similar features so it's very easy to tell them that this is not only your child and this not only in Tanzania if you see a Japanese child with Down's Syndrome they'll be the same as your child so you cannot tell me that your child has been bearish for the same Person of the which they are in London. And your crime doesn't work that way and I show them the pictures as well I usually tell them that it's genetic or and you can see it has nothing to do with you or you just happen so you don't have anyone to blame like the parents Dr Morrow sees I also didn't know much about Down's syndrome when my son was born and at 1st I didn't know what I needed to do to look after him. I eventually found out that Chadron would have to do spatial physical exercises to help him develop so I take him swimming regularly with his older brother their own . Everybody you know. You're going to Barry. What are you going to do that. We're going to is with. Me. And it's. Yes why don't you go there. But we'll try to earn. A dollar you don't. Need exercise. Several loves to sweet soul because he doesn't know we haven't found a place to check just one for his your Filipino vision therapy so no money soon 3 times a week. As a therapy session. Last week me. My struggle to find a physiotherapist to help children is what 1st got me interested in how other parts in Tanzania are coping and for this program I've spoken to a whole range of mothers middle class like me as well as poor a mother as it made me realise that my situation is actually not that bad and I noticed that the poor mothers went even aware that children needed physiotherapy they had so many other problems they needed to solve fussed. So secure is to find out what a physiotherapist sees when he treats people good freaky Matthew give me an insight For years ago. My other 2 colleagues to this community visit me mad 3 children walk having different conditions he'd been in their houses and not given the chance to explore the environment and develop the physical condition which can lead into physical disability like contracture I remember this particular child who was having it Down syndrome due to the overweight that she was having shoes and able to stand up and walk so she had started to develop contracts on the side of some of. The social skills the language and communication was highly impaired among other things sure. Challenges with toilet training so you can see this child was deprived do today believe that the parents were hearing about having a child with the. Kind of belief they had the parents among the the believe that they had they say the community believed that the parents satisfied their child to get huge wealth in order to gain wealth which in real father when we were there we didn't really see what were they talking about because in the private place how old was she but then shows like 70 years old so this 7 year old couldn't walk or talk or go to the toilet not because she had Down's syndrome but because our parents had locked away. It got me thinking about a teenager I know who until recently also couldn't speak. But then she had a life changing moment Ok we had angles house you're about to meet and guy. She's has Down syndrome. She was adopted by this lady warms up. Close to Mount Kilimanjaro. Angry as mother died and then and a frantic search began for someone who could look after her a look or tell Finola how to knees with Down syndrome so she was asked to look after. All of us exam are you. Oh. Wow you've really grown. How are you. How are you. Are you good right Ok. I'm happy to see her as his Really are you. Just suspect bought homes duration before well. She was definitely not well treated I mean I've been told since when the grandmother would go out at night if they aren't wasn't there she'd just tie her to a piece of furniture and she'd go off to the pub or wherever she was going Why do you think she she didn't speak when she can too well because she was so quick to pick up words when I started giving them to her I think it's because nobody offered them to her before. But I think no adults took the time to be bothered with talking to a child who wasn't going to learn anything and they should have seen in how many days she learned how many words you know it was really incredible. He learned. C c. C c that. Adults would stop and say you can't believe the change she wasn't doing this before she was doing there and really what have you done and I said well nothing really apart from love her. And I do think that's all it is you know. Giving a damn. She's really have been enjoying the moment this is really good it's the environment that you've built for them that probably makes them this way. Is so hard being Guy after just one year and now talk this shows what can happen with a little patience a better school and like Finola ses a lot of love. That wasn't the 1st time people in the area had noticed children with Down's can learn if they're given the chance and not way in fact angles teacher. Told me that the villagers have started to notice the difference education makes in they have taken action by Bear what the one eye can see. By the Luca. Just say that there is a boy who was being hidden by his parents and the villagers saw that this school is making so much difference with these children so they came up to them and tell them you know there's a boy in this house that has been hidden for a very long time maybe you should go and look out if you can bring him to the school so they went there by the father was strongly rejecting the idea so they had to even consult their local government to help them and finally they managed to persuade him and he joined and completely changed when he went to school I want to find out something did the parties tell you why they were hiding him. Why Lisa I'm out while I'm fitted out Bob where no no I knew from the reason that they had him is because they fold ashamed how did the parents attitudes change over time someone for a it was about one as a. Friend and so the parents are really changed the now become more receptive to accept the child very well. They're very happy that he can do so many things and they even know did other parents please do not hide your child because we were doing that and it didn't work but now look at the changes that have happened so they're kind of joined forces with them to change the environment so the change has been really good. Religious the school and the government work together to make sure this boy got an education. And over time his pardon sir attitudes changed too but I wondered how much further do we need to go it's something I was forced to think about when one day out in the garden I watched a video on my phone that had gone by it featured a man with Down syndrome called Frank Stevens what dressed Congress in the us Frank blew my mind. And next we would like to go to Mr Frank Stevens an outstanding advocate on behalf of a Down syndrome research and perhaps the family said to deal with the issues now Mr Even if you're recognized for whatever opening comments you care to make. No one knows more about life what does and wrong than that than I do seriously I have a great life I have I have lectured at universities acted. In the award winning film and and I mean winning t.v. Show and spoken to thousands of young people about the value of inclusion and making America great. I am. Proud of who can speak. I haven't seen any child can speak like this but I think is an. Amazing Speaker how did they don't need to how did they manage to making eloquent like that I have been to the White House twice. And I didn't have to duck the facts either hire. A Harvard based study I just cover that people with dollars and drum. As well as their parents and siblings are happier than society at large. Surely happiness is. Is what's stopping you I can only hope for children I do my very best but if it. Gets a chance to be like from experience. I'll be of medical help and. Thank you. Thank you for watching the video really made me cry so I got in contact with Frank to ask for advice and collusion is is everything without it I would never have learned to do the things I do I've been talking to families of people with Down syndrome here in Tanzania they have told me stories about to generate Down Syndrome being he done at home what's your message to them I am so sad for the prefer for them for the people of Tanzania. They are wasting a tremendous source of happiness I think that our happiness comes from our need to slow things down to our speed My biggest hope for my son is that he will have a relationship some days tell me about your girlfriend what is very pretty her name Jenny and she did. We have a pretty good life together and me we we have fun together we know we we do things together and and I think having a real relationship would mean lots of affairs are makers. Can experience the joy of of of being with someone that they love. You can and should hope for a great future for your son. The thing that that will hold him back most is low expectations so dream big very very big. I want to dream big for my son Chadron and I want to Nia to dream big for all our sons and daughters with Down syndrome. And.
