Series big brother were reported to Production Managers at endemol, the Production Company commissioned by channel 4. In a statement, banijay uk, which purchased endemol in 2020, said in light of the very serious allegations relating to the alleged serious misconduct of Russell Brand while presenting shows produced by endemol in 2004 and 2005, banijay uk has launched an urgent internal investigation and will co operate with any requests for information from broadcast partners and external agencies. It adds, the company encourage anybody who feels that they were affected by Brands Behaviour while working on these productions to contact them in confidence. Meanwhile, a charity supported by Russell Brands own Charitable Foundation has cut ties with him. Trevi women and Childrens Charity said it was deeply saddened and upset by the allegations. Brand was working for channel 4, the bbc, and Acting In Hollywood Films during the period of the claims, all of which he denies. Vincent mcaviney has the latest. His behaviour made him no stranger to the tabloids but, this weekend, serious sexual allegations mean Russell Brand has made all the front pages. Perhaps over the course of the evening, some of my accoutrements could make their way onto your body. Once one of the most ubiquitous faces on british tv and radio, Working For Mtv and channel 4. Before building a career in hollywood for a time. It is the way these organisations oversaw brands conduct which is now coming under the spotlight, with the Foreign Secretary saying the Entertainment Industry as a whole has questions to answer. There are some real challenges where you have these very, very acute differentials in power, whether that be in the Entertainment Industry, whether that be in politics, and we see this in the commercial world as well. And i think we have to be particularly careful when we listen to the voices of the people who are relatively powerless. July 1st, 2012, was when my rape happened. It was in los angeles that brand met a woman that the investigators are calling nadia. She says they had a brief sexual relationship, but then on another occasion, he raped her. Those speaking out have had their identities described. Im like, no, thats not happening, were not doing that, and i tried to get away from him. And at this point, hes grabbing at my underwear. Im telling him to get off me and he wont get off. I was very distraught, trying to get out of the house. Another woman in the uk, alice, said she met and had a brief relationship when he was in his 30s and she was 16 and still at school. She says he later sexually assaulted her. I was pushing him away and pushing him away, and he wasnt. He wasnt backing off at all. So i ended up having to punch him really hard in the stomach to get him off, and i was crying, and he said, oh, i only want to see your mascara run, anyway. The allegations have all been denied by Russell Brand in a video message. I was very, very promiscuous. Now, during that time of promiscuity, the relationships i had were absolutely always consensual. I was always transparent about that then, almost too transparent, and im being transparent about it now. And to see that Transparency Metastasised into something criminal that i absolutely deny makes me question, is there another agenda at play . Hours after the revelations, Russell Brand appeared on stage in london last night for a sold out show, receiving a Standing Ovation. Brand is set to play windsor s Theatre Royal on tuesday, as part of a tour across england over the next few weeks. The bbc has been unable to confirm today whether these performances will still be going ahead. Lets get more details on the event that Russell Brand attended last night. 0ur correspondent tom brada. On saturday night, Russell Brand performed a sold out show to 2,000 fans, just hours after those allegations were published. 0n the night itself, the show started around one hour late, just after 8pm apparently, because of traffic. But when mr brand did make it onto stage, he did make an early remark in relation to the Controversy Swirling around him. What he said was, there are obviously some things i absolutely cannot talk about and i appreciate that you will understand. Now, that was the one and only reference made to the allegations. He did, of course, earlier on saturday, post a video in which he strenuously denied the allegations. Throughout the gig itself, there seemed to have been some impact on brand. Apparently, he was quite distracted. At one point, he lost his place. And at several points during the second half of the show, he was seen to be flicking through pieces of paper which hed brought onto the stage with him. But it seems his fans werent particularly fazed. They, infact, gave a Standing Ovation at the end of the performance, which apparently lasted for several minutes. Interestingly, Russell Brand has got several more shows scheduled for the upcoming weeks, upcoming months, around the country. But with these serious allegations that hes facing, it remains to be seen whether those shows will go ahead. He was doing stand up last night. Just remind us about Russell Brands wider career. He was doing stand up last night. Hes returned to the origins of his career. He was, in fact, doing stand up at the very early stages of his career. He is, of course, over the last 20 years or so, a seriously high profile figure in the Entertainment Industry. Hes had a lot of mainstream success, but he has along the way also courted a lot of controversy. He started as a stand up comedian, but in the early 2000s, he really catapulted to become a Household Name after presenting a spin off of the really popular Reality Tv Series big brother. And from that point on, his career went from strength to strength. He was presenting really mainstream award ceremonies, he was even starring in some hollywood films. Though i should point out in recent years, he has slightly deviated from that track and he is now in fact a fairly successful youtuber, also a fairly controversial one. And i point out the controversies because he has never been that far from controversy at many points in his career. Just for example, in 2001, while he was Working For Mtv, he was dismissed from his role after turning up to work the day after the 9 11 terror attacks dressed as 0sama bin laden. And of course, there has been controversy at the bbc as well. A scandal back in 2008, when he sent a series of offensive messages, Voice Messages to andrew sachs the actor, which led to him being suspended and he then eventually resigned. In spite of this, he has remained extremely popular. He has millions of followers across social media, tiktok, instagram and youtube. But with these extremely serious allegations, he now does have extremely serious questions to answer. The president of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen, has visited the italian island of lampedusa this morning, after thousands of migrants from north africa arrived this week outnumbering the islands resident population. Ms von der leyen said European Countries had to tackle the Migration Issue together. The italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, said the influx to the island and to italy had to be stopped, it wasnt enough to just redistribute migrants across the eu. In just three days, more than 8,000 migrants have arrived on the shores of lampedusa. Thats more than the number of People Living on the italian island. Its led to protests and pressure on the government. Today, two more arrivals that local people were happy to welcome italian Prime MinisterGiorgia Meloni and president of the European CommissionUrsula Von Der Leyen. This massive flow of immigrants is something which requires the involvement and the responsibility by everybody to be tackled, because it is going to affect certainly the border, the frontier countries, but it will soon also involve all of the other countries. The Italian Red Cross has said it is currently dealing with about 2,500 people at this reception centre, designed for 400 arrivals. Today, Ursula Von Der Leyen announced she had a ten point plan to tackle the issue. This includes stepping up efforts against smugglers and providing more legal pathways for migration. We will increase our support to transfer migrants out of lampedusa, and we urge other Member States to use the voluntary solidarity mechanism and transfer migrants out of italy. This mornings visit also included the port of lampedusa, the landing point of many migrants who have left nearby tunisia by boat, arriving here amongst the residents of italys most southerly point. Translation were angry because we live, we pay taxes, we do whats needed for living, and at the same time, we experience all this reality which is unfair. Its not a condition for living, this one were experiencing, and i hope this visit wont be just another parade. Protesting residents hope todays visit will help stem the flow, as nearly 126,000 migrants have arrived in italy this year, about double the number for the same period in 2022. Matt graveling, bbc news. The United Nations says the number of People Killed in last weeks floods in libya has reached more than 11,000. Another 10,000 people are still missing. Two dams failed in a storm a week ago today, which saw large parts of the eastern city of derna washed away. 0ur correspondent anna foster is there and sent this update. All the time, there are still recovery teams arriving to continue their work here in derna. We know now that more than 10,000 people are still missing, so that attempt to try and recover those bodies is continuing in this area, which you can see just a small bit of the devastation, but this is repeated right the way through the heart of this city. One thing that we are starting to see now is the beginning of International Aid arrivals from Different Countries around the world. In the beginning, it really was very much local libyans who were doing thatjob, but various countries, including the uk, have pledged aid, and that now is starting to arrive here in derna. Of course, the scale of this catastrophe, as we have been saying, is such that a huge amount of aid is still needed, but it is starting to come in, its starting to reach the places that need it. Specialist teams are also starting to come into this area, who can help with the recovery operation, help with finding and identifying the bodies, and crucially, to help those survivors who are still living in the middle of, in many ways, a nightmare. The bbc s anna foster. A landslide in the Democratic Republic Of Congo has killed at least 17 people. The disaster occurred overnight near the banks of the congo river in the Northern City of lisala, the capital of mongala province. It followed days of torrential rain. Witnesses say several houses have been submerged and residents have been struggling to rescue people from the rubble. The sea ice surrounding antarctica is well below any previous recorded winter level, Satellite Data shows, a worrying new benchmark for a region that once seemed resistant to global warming. The map image shows the typical extent of sea ice at this time of year, specifically on the 14th of september. Thats the yellow dotted line. But the actual extent of ice is much less than the median. And as we head into the antarctic summer, much of the existing ice will continue to melt. With more on this, im joined by our climate editorjustin rowlatt, whos in the newsroom. Tell us what we are seeing at the moment. Tell us what we are seeing at the moment. ,. ,. ~. ,. , moment. Sea ice in antarctica melts away almost moment. Sea ice in antarctica melts away almost entirely moment. Sea ice in antarctica melts away almost entirely in moment. Sea ice in antarctica melts away almost entirely in the moment. Sea ice in antarctica melts away almost entirely in the summer| away almost entirely in the summer and grows in the winter. We saw a pattern where it seemed quite resistant to climate change. So it was, you would see it growing, in fact, building until 2016, the sea ice area was growing. And we think that was because antarctica is a continent on its own surrounded by the sea and has its own weather and climate system. But what were seeing since 2016 and culminating this year what seems to be what some scientists are describing as a regime shift. So moving towards an era of lower ice, and that is really significant because the ice in antarctica reflects the energy from the sun, that keeps the continent cool and it cools the water underneath it and acts as a kind of refrigerator at the bottom of the earth, keeping, regulating the earths Weather Systems and keeping the earth cooler. If that begins to change in a significant way, and this change would be gradual, but if it does begin to change, that can have a really significant effect on the worlds climate and also on weather patterns. The worlds climate and also on weather patterns. When we think of the weather weather patterns. When we think of the weather and weather patterns. When we think of the weather and climate, weather patterns. When we think of the weather and climate, we weather patterns. When we think of the weather and climate, we often l the weather and climate, we often think of the air temperature, the temperature we experience when we walk out of the house. But the Sea Temperatures are also rising and thatis temperatures are also rising and that is vitally important notjust in antarctica, but things like the strength of Hurricane SueNorth America as well for example. We have seen a really america as well for example. We have seen a really exceptional america as well for example. We have seen a really exceptional year america as well for example. We have seen a really exceptional year for seen a really exceptional year for Sea Temperatures. We saw an all time high for a Country Surface Temperature this summer in the northern hemisphere. It happened in july northern hemisphere. It happened in july sea surface. Northern hemisphere. It happened in july sea surface. Normally, northern hemisphere. It happened in july sea surface. Normally, you would expect to happen towards the north of the Southern Hemisphere summer. So this is an unusual time to see such a high peak, it was really out of the ordinary. Scientists dont know whether that is what is driving the changes in antarctica, one imagines the Sea Temperature would have a role, but they say they want to look at other factors that might be playing a role as well. You are absolutely right, the rising Sea Temperature is a real concern, it takes a lot of energy to heat water and a long time for that energy to diffuse. And we are at the moment at the beginning of an el nino year, a Weather Variation that sees temperatures in the tropical pacific rise and drives higher temperatures worldwide. We expect that to peak towards the end of october, november, decemberthis october, november, december this year. October, november, decemberthis year. And that should mean we see similarly high temperatures next year. And obviously, that may mean we see consequences on the Antarctic Ice going on into next year as well. That that is something certainly scientists will be watching very closely. Scientists will be watching very closel. ~. ,. , scientists will be watching very closel. ,. ,. ,. , i, closely. Sam newey was just 22 years old when he was killed fighting Russian Forces in ukraine. The british student from solihull was leading an assault on an enemy trench when he died two weeks ago. Now, his mother says she couldnt be prouder of his decision to volunteer for combat. Giles latcham reports. Aged just 22, sam knew he was growing into a leader. Aged just 22, sam newey was growing into a leader. This is one of the last videos of him. Please donate to help us. Slav, ukraine. Hello. Im slava. Two weeks ago, his unit stormed a russian trench and freed ukrainian prisoners. He held the position until Everyone Else was clear. And for his mum, vicki, his courage is a comfort. Sam waited for all of his unit to be safe, but he also rescued prisoners. So he set people free and then was hit by artillery. So. I couldnt be more prouder of my boy as a human being. And any parent would be. When the war started, sam quit his University Course in birmingham to travel to ukraine. He began as a medical aid worker, helping communities affected by flooding. So we had one little fire fight, just one. Following in the footsteps of his big brother dan, who spent five years fighting isis in syria, he went into combat. Dan eventually becoming his commanding officer. Not once did he ever show any sign of fear. Courageous throughout. And i couldnt have been more proud of him. Its quite a weird feeling to to be in combat anyway, but when youre in combat with your blood brother, thats a completely different ballgame. You kind of have to take extra care at looking at things, but you dont want to be obvious about it. So you have to kind of Beast Everybodyjust as hard as you beat your own brother, but you have to be even more harder on your brother. So its quite a complicated thing. But like i say, i was lucky enough to be involved in firefights with them, but it was just with them, but he wasjust an excitable, eager young man. The familys raised £25,000 to fly his body home and pay for his funeral. By one estimate, there are more than 50 britons fighting in ukraine. Sams mum wants to start a fund to pay for counselling to help them when they get home. Ther are ex military volunteering, who will get help when they get home. But there are also youngsters like sam who on return home, and if theyre lucky enough to come home, will struggle massively. Ive had a lot of friends like kill themselves since they came back from different war zones. I think over the years, its about 13 or 14 people ive lost. I mean, the war doesnt end when you come home. Youve got another war when you get back as well. Dan plans to return to ukraine, despite his brothers death. And for anyone who questions sams decision to fight, his mum has this message. He left the comfort of a peaceful country to enter a war zone, to save and help other human beings, and i am immensely proud. Five crocodiles do still remain unaccounted for. Lovely pictures now from cyprus, hundreds of baby turtles taking the first steps towards the sea, much nicer than the crocodiles. Newborn turtles broke out of their eggs, thousands of them moving towards the coast, they come from 2,000 nests located on protected beaches. More stories on our website. Thanks for watching. Hello. Its still quite warm and humid, particularly across the south of the uk. Weve scattered showers and thunderstorms and we will see two rounds of storms through the course of today. Weve already had the downpours in the south west of the country. They are moving through parts of wales and into the midlands. And you can see on the satellite picture, these clumps of cloud here, these Storm Clouds Drifting in from the warm south. Later on today, well see another round of storms, possibly reaching south eastern areas. But this is what it looks like around the middle of the afternoon, so that Thundery Rain Moving Northwards through wales, into the midlands and into east anglia. The south may actually have some sunshine, but the risk of thunder and lightning continues through this evening and overnight. In fact, you can see this next area of storminess affecting the south east. And actually, there will be plenty of cloud and outbreaks of rain in other parts of the country as well. In the north west, outbreaks of rain, Western Parts of scotland too. And with the air coming in from the south, its a mild night 11 in stornoway, 16 Degrees Celsius in the south. And then, monday is that transition day. Cold fronts, a couple of them, crossing the country. By definition, the air at least, relatively speaking is colder behind the weather front. Its this westerly push of atlantic air. Behind it, i think sunshine and showers for many Western Areas of the uk, as this cold front sweeps across the country. Now, its not particularly cold air because, look at that, temperatures are still around 17 to 20 degrees across england and wales. In Northern Ireland and scotland, closer to 15. Now, midweek, tuesday into wednesday, quite a strong jet stream is going to push an ex tropical cyclone, or ex Tropical Storm hurricane, our way. Some strong winds in association with this area of low pressure. Gale force winds around some coasts, really blustery inland, but because this is an ex tropical system, theres a lot of warm and humid air mixed in it. So thats why, despite the wind and the rain, temperatures in some spots could still nudge up to around 18 or 20 Degrees Celsius. And its a broad area of low pressure, meaning that it will take time for it to sweep across the country. So i think on wednesday, once again, another blustery day, with a spell of heavy rain, as this cold front moves across the country. Again, look at that, 22 in norwich, around about 16 expected in belfast. So a turbulent week on the way. This is bbc news.
