Also coming up in the programme. Will we see Serena Williams win another grand slam title . Three years and counting since her last and her coach says changes need to be made. And i will be looking into golfs distance debate. Our longer drives than we have ever seen before taking the sport in the wrong direction . Hello and welcome to sportsday, im ben croucher. A big night of fa cup football across the bbc tonight, so lets start at Oxford Uniteds kassam stadium, where Newcastle United are hoping to avoid an upset. The League One Promotion chasers earned a goalless draw at St James Park nine days ago and now get a second crack in front of an expected sellout. Former newcastle captain alan shearer is part of the match of the day team tonight. I chatted to him about half an hour ago. I asked him if he was impressed with thejob i asked him if he was impressed with the job steve bruce was doing . Newcastle havent been past the fourth round under mike ashley, so if they get the right result tonight and can get into the next round it isa and can get into the next round it is a decent draw with west brom and the number of points that they have got on the board in the premier league, if you put all that together then yeah i can understand exactly why he is saying that. The football at times hasnt been pretty, they
certainly havent scored as many goals as the newcastle fans would have liked. But in terms of an overall then, yeah, it can be pretty positive. A team like newcastle though and the fans expectations are surely beyond the fifth round . Absolutely. If you look at when i was playing we got to two finals, we didnt win anything before anybody says anything but thats what the fa ns says anything but thats what the fans want, they want a little bit of hope. When they havent been going great and they havent been scoring enough goals, this competition can keep their season going. In oxford are no pushovers and newcastle dont have the best of memories from playing at that stadium. It would be a really tough game. I know that their priority is to get out of leaguei but their priority is to get out of league i but they showed in the first game at St Jamess Park that it wont be easy for newcastle and
theyre going to have to be better than they have been in the last couple of weeks to get into the fifth round. Talking of who is going to be playing on the pitch for newcastle. We have seen that liverpool are going to play their Second String tonight due to the winter break. I dont think steve bruce has that in mind for newcastle. Is this a hindrance having this type in the middle of the winter break for the team . Not for newcastle, its not for the team because they havent been successful in this competition. They havent been past the fourth round under mike ashley said that is something they have to improve on and he will wa nt to they have to improve on and he will want to do that. He has played a relatively strong side in the last two rounds and certainly against oxford at home in the home tie he played a strong team. It is a decent draw for whoever gets through tonight, west brom. Fingers crossed that might be newcastle. Allen, many thanks for your time. Another surprise result in the fourth round proper was a draw between shrewsbury town and runaway premier league
leaders liverpool. And that was mostly liverpools first team too. Theyve got tonight off because it falls during the winter break, so Conor Mcnamara is going to be watching to see if the Second String can get the job done at the second time of asking. Well, liverpool are the champions of europe, they are champions of the world club comp, there at the runaway leaders of the premier league. They seem an Unstoppable Force at the moment but shrewsbury town did keep them to a 2 2 draw in the first leg. A tie thatjurgen klopp really didnt want. We know that because he is not going to be here tonight. We assume he is off sunning himself on a beach somewhere taking advantage of the premier leagues mid season break. It is unusual tonight that the programme tonight contains no managers notes. It will be one of the coaches who manages one of the younger sides who will be in charge. Will it be Something Like the weakened team that was able to beat everton earlier in the competition or will
it bea earlier in the competition or will it be a youth team effectively, such as the one that let in five goals and were beaten by aston villa in the league cup. For shrewsbury town they should be a big payday for them. They have never been here for a competitive game before but becausejurgen klopp said he is not going to be here, it has not been selected for Television Coverage and the payday is not as big. You cant watch it on television tonight but we have got full radio coverage on radio five live. Kick off at 7 45pm. There are several other matches tonight. All 7 45 kick offs. Birmingham and coventry meet at st andrews again. Cardiff face reading in the all championship tie. Derby host northampton with the winners facing Manchester United in the fifth round. Oxford united against newcastle is live on bbc one at 8 oclock with build up on the iplayer and red button from 7 30pm with reaction and highlights from the other ties
at full time too. Remember the euphoria at lords last summer when england won the cricket world cup . That dramatic super over. Well believe it or not, theyve not actually played a one Day International since then. Well in their first match as world champions, theyve been soundly beaten by south africa. Captain Quinton De Kock led by example in cape town, striking 107 in their 7 wicket win. Patrick gearey reports. When you are stood at the top of the world whered you go next . The pessimists answer, the only way is down. A miscalculation byjason roy that started a chain reaction. A series of england batsmen got their sums wrong. South africa had them 1361. Sums wrong. South africa had them 136 1. They were reliant on a man who missed last years party. Joe
denley finally gave this team some elevation. He made 87 but had england gone far enough . 200 and 59 was hardly a mountain top englishman went running for cover, they had little in their attack. Without ben stokes and joffre archer, Quinton De Kock smashed them all around. The men at the top of the world have thudded back to earth. Patrick geary, bbc news. The second match ta kes pla ce geary, bbc news. The second match takes place in durban on friday. Hes not even made his debut yet but Super League Clubs are considering legal action over catalan dragons decision to sign australian israel folau. The former union star was sacked by Rugby Australia for saying hell awaits gay people. Whilst the league did sanction his arrival, they said strict guidelines were in place if he repeated his views. Well hull krs owner sent a notice to catalans to put them on notice if they suffered financial losses as a result for example a sponsor quitting or the super league brand being damaged. Other clubs have told the french side that they supported the stance of hull krs owner. A few stories coming out of the six nations to tell you about, including. Manu tuilagi, who will miss englands calcutta cup clash with scotland on saturday. Its hoped his groin injury will recover to allow him to play against ireland in the third round of fixtures. Wales full back Liam Williams is out of their next two games. Hes not played since the world cup due to Ankle Surgery but could be in line to face england on 7th march. Ireland have recalled Peter Omahoney and Robbie Henshaw here for the visit of wales on saturday. They replace the injury duo of caelen doris and Garry Ringrose in the starting 15. In golf, how far is too far . Well, those running the sport are concerned that, with golfers hitting the ball further and further, golf
could be unsustainable. Its all in a big report released today. So what needs to change . Austin halewoods been looking into it for us. Austin, the average club golfer might drive the ball 200 maybe 250 yards. These numbers go way beyond that though. Distances us club golfers could only dream of to be honest. This really is a big worry for golfs lawmakers theyre becoming more and more concerned that longer hitting means longer courses, higher maintenance costs and rounds taking longer to complete. Golfers hit every club in the bag further than they used to but this is the problem area the drive. The likes of rory mcilroy and tiger woods are smashing the ball further than it ever has gone before. So, this is how its changed over the last quarter of a century. In 1995, the worlds top 20 golfers were driving the ball, on average, 278 yards off the tee. But you throw that forward to last year and the average is up to a massive 310. And its no surprise that that
increase conincides with when this man exploded on the scene. Tiger woods completely changed the approach to golf. He trained harder and longer than most had done before him lifting weights and putting on size were now essential parts of the routine. But, of course, its notjust the golfers power and physiques thatve improved over this time, the equipments got much better too. And this is where the law makers are hoping to but the brakes on. Millions is spent on improving the balls players use and then also the power and speed of their clubs. And its the combination of the golfers and this equipment thats changing the game. Erin hills in wisconsin hosted the 2017 us open and it measured a mammoth 7,711 yards. But brooks kopeka still won the tournament with a score of 16 under par. Even the iconic old course at st andrews has been called obsolete by some, with tees having to be placed out
of bounds to make it long enough for professionals. Heres the chief executive of the r a, martin slumbers. To play golf really well you need to be able to drive the ball, you need to be able to hit the ball onto the green, you need to be able to chip, put. I think one of the great things about our game is this balance and over the years and decades there have been players who are good at one 01 have been players who are good at one or two but they have quite often have a weakness in one of the other areas. But that, to me, is if you lose that balance, that amount of skill, that breadth of skills, you are changing the nature of golf. But todays report doesnt have any solutions. Its from now that the lawmakers, equipment manufacturers and the players will start to talk about a way forward. Lets see if we can try and find some solutions. Sophie walker is a former ladies European Tour professional. She joins us live on sportsday. Over the years, golf courses have been amended to accommodate longer hitting. Does equipment need to change too . I would start with the golf ball, i think everybody could do that. It would maybe take two or three weeks to get prepared for a new golf ball. Whats happened is everything that happened at the same time. They have got the Golf Technology with the manufacturers, people are getting fitter as happened with tiger woods. Then the physics, how we get the ball going further. Bernard langer was at his prime in the late 80s and early 905. He was at his prime in the late 805 and early 905. He says he hits the ball exactly the same distance now as he did 20 or30 exactly the same distance now as he did 20 or 30 years ago. It is crazy because it is notjust the report looking into it but theres actually some concern that this could filter into everyday golf for you and me. In fact, we are buying clubs that hit the ball longer and some of the5e hit the ball longer and some of these courses becoming ob5olete. Hit the ball longer and some of these courses becoming obsolete. Not for me i need technology i think it is going to happen at the professional level first and definitely at the mens level and filter down. I think what the golf manufacturers are doing for the arbiter5 i5 manufacturers are doing for the arbiter5 is making it more enjoyable and theyre doing that really well. So not only can they hit them further but they are keeping it in place so that is hopefully going to speed it up. I dont see many amateur saying that courses too short for me. I suppose it is all well and good hitting the ball long but you still have to keep it straight. We changed you think we would see a change in the order of world golf a5 would see a change in the order of world golf as we see it now . Rory mcilroy and others hit it the furthest and are still going to be the ones who hit furthest. But Graeme Mcdowell won last week, so i think there will be a few people might suffer but the cream will a lwa y5 might suffer but the cream will always ri5e might suffer but the cream will always rise to the top. We saw last week in athletics they introduced new measures restricting the nike
trainers. They have outlawed
