Hello and welcome its awards season, and in the next few minutes well find out which actors and film makers are nominated for the starriest of them all the oscars. Imjane hill, and with me for this bbc news special is the film criticjason solomons. Well cross live to los angeles shortly first, lets look at some of the top contenders. Joaquin phoenix has been winning statuettes for his role in the dark thrillerjoker will it lead the pack . Did you hear that story about how he was this year . Keep your eyes on the trees. Sam mendes has directed an epic british warfilm will 1917 be victorious . Martin scorseses three and a half hour crime drama the irishman could be taking on the might of quentin tarantino. How many nods will go to the powerful tale of a break up in Marriage Story . Will any female directors be recognised . Greta gerwig may get a nod for little women. Listen to me. On you go. Is Renee Zellweger a shoe in . , for her remarkable performance as judy garland . So well be in la in a moment to hear the first batch of nominations jason, what are you particularly looking out for today . Always a case of who ends up with the biggest numbers at the end of today and i think it is going be very close between joker, today and i think it is going be very close betweenjoker, the irishman and Quentin Tarantinos once upon a time in hollywood, watch out for that because it has Leonardo Dicaprio and brad pitt for acting, it has Production Design, costumes, writer and director. Old hall with but hollywood could be with the new hollywood. A female director . Some diversity in terms of denominations . People will be looking out for these things in the oscar nominations. Exciting, look out for brits. Sam mendes, taron egerton, good chance of best actor. Strikes me as a muscular year, big firms and themes, long films, some
of them. You might describe something as a smaller film, a quieter tale like Marriage Story, bitter though it is it is a smaller firm in that sense. The big firms are dealing with guns, warfare, politics, murder, muscular, masculine themes made by big male directors, martin scorsese, sam mendes, quentin tarantino. A softer side, can it muscling . My muscle in. But those three seem to be dominating. Parasite by bong joon ho could upset everyone. The actor and writer issa rae, and the actorjohn cho are about to announce the first nine nominations, including the supporting actor categories. They announced in two tranches, these are the first nine. From los angeles. Good morning and welcome to the brand new david geffen theatre at the academy museum. We cant wait when the academy opens later this year when the world experiences in person a adventure of the greatest movies and movie makers of all time. We are here this morning to announce the 92nd oscars nominations, all nominees voted on by members of the academy, an International Community of artists. What makes this oscar is so of artists. What makes this oscar is so special is these nominations are given to actors by their peers. Actors know it actors, editors nominate editors, directors nominate directors, you get the idea. I am pleased to introduce the hosts. Good
morning we prepared a big opening monologue. It was really good with a lot of good jokes but we decided all people really want to hear is who is nominated so lets get started. Applause strongest. Super strong. Achievement in costume design. Applause congratulations. The sound branch oversees two categories. You feel ok . You feelok . Ok. Applause. My applause. My son told me star wars or come home in shame, dad. Voted by the music branch. Applause
we are doing good, i think. Short films and feature Animation Branch oversees the short film categories. Applause do you have a sister . I do not. Ido i do not have a sister im sorry. Now another acting category. Applause womack, a bunch of no names. We still have more, we will be back. Wow. Still have more, we will be back. Wow. Back at 530. Thats the first tranche, five minutes to talk about it. Some obvious, others not. Once upon a time in hollywood has four, joker
has four, pulling away from the rest of the pack with the massive nominations for the depth of craft going on in both those films. The irishman has three, 1917 has three, fairly predictable even at the early stage. Looking at supporting actor and actress, the most interesting bits there for us. Florence pugh from oxford, 2a, fourth orfifth major firm, from oxford, 2a, fourth orfifth majorfirm, to get a nomination from oxford, 2a, fourth orfifth major firm, to get a nomination for witty woman is great news for her. Playing amy for greta gerwig in that film. Only three nominations, little women. Maybe there is enough heft for the female director nomination. Would be the only person for two nominations. I love scioscia
ronan my first in that. Everyone is blonde in that category, no diversity. And in the mens category, Previous Academy favourites and winners. This is normally where you get younger people coming through in the supporting category, not this year. Never heard of some of these people, he said. You couldnt pick five more famous people. Jonathan pryce missing out against anthony hopkins. I think they have split those, you can take the weight and ill take the supporting with some fava beans
and chianti, of course. What strikes you, laura dern, supporting actress. What about favourites . Is it in the bag for laura dern . A darling of film and television at the moment. Fantastic in big little lies, fantastic in this. A great speech, scarlettjohansson fantastic in this. A great speech, Scarlett Joha nsson with her there. She is magnificent. Also the mother in little women. I think this is for her all round work, fantastic performance from laura dern, hollywood royalty, around a very long time, remember her in wild at
heart, david lynch. She does support this movie, does what a supporting actress must too, different tones and energy, otherwise between adam driver and Scarlett Joha nsson, lending her great support both morally and in terms of the technicality of her performance. I do think it is has already. Long way to go between now and the opening of the envelopes. This new theatre, much talked about, i didnt know they would be in the david geffen theatre. This is the new Hollywood Museum they have been trying to get made for years and it looks like its nearly finished, people inside it. Not open yet but a multi , multi Million Pound project. You go to hollywood and you cannot see the history, the great history of the oscars, there is no museum to film making in hollywood. Oscars, there is no museum to filmmaking in hollywood. Now there is going to be. Interesting seeing
adam driver and Scarlett Joha nsson ina adam driver and Scarlett Joha nsson in a Marriage Story, if the acting had been bad it would have been a long watch. Talking about Scarlett Johansson right now in relation to judge robert, a film that is dividing people. Jojo judge robert, a film that is dividing people. Jojo robert. She plays the mother, harbouring secretly a jewish go in the attic in the house in the holocaust comedy, a film ifind difficult to balance with its own. Popular in hollywood, Audience Award at the toronto film festival, previous oscar winners have trod there. It is good intentioned but done in terrible taste so i do not really get it. Scarlettjohansson taste so i do not really get it. Scarlett joha nsson does have, taste so i do not really get it. Scarlettjohansson does have, what we are looking out for in the next few minutes, she could be nominated for supporting actress and the lead. No one has done that for ten years. We had the same at the bafta nominations, nominated twice, you think of all the great people not nominated, Cynthia Erivo for harriet. Wide range of people getting nominated. When you have two scarlettjohanssons, getting nominated. When you have two Scarlett Joha nssons, it getting nominated. When you have two scarlettjohanssons, it is as if they are calling these people rather than spreading the net wider. There is other talent out there i feel like going terrific in Marriage Story, i do not getjojo robert, not her best performance, she has been way better. Byjojo robert. Back to la now for the other categories, including best film and best director. Lets cross back to los angeles now for the remaining nominations for the 92nd academy awards. The academys documentary Branch Offices to categories. Applause and here are the nominees for best documentary short subject. Applause thats the best collection of tight
titles, that category right there. The newly renamed best International Feature film award is voted on by Academy Members across all branches from around the world. The nominees are. Applause the Production Design branch nominates these films for achievement in Production Design. Applause. Best Production Design, i used to do Production Design. No way. Mike i didnt. You lied to me, god. Here are the nominees for achievement in film editing, voted by the academys film editing, voted by the academys film editors branch. Great. For achievement in cinematography, the Cinematographers Branch nominates the following films. You got this . We are doing great, were killing it. As. Thank you everyone for joining us and watch to see who wins the gold at the 97th oscars, sunday 20 29. We are already talking about it, theres so much in there, some good news for britons, and we will talk about those in and minute in terms of the numbers, jasons masses are pa red in terms of the numbers, jasons masses are pared to mine but we think thejoker masses are pared to mine but we think the joker is masses are pared to mine but we think thejoker is out in front. I make no apology for heading straight to the phone line, because im absolutely delighted to say. Lets speak now to Roger Deakins cinematographer on 1917. Thanks forjoining us so quickly and congratulations. Thank you very much. I saw yourfilm. Congratulations. Thank you very much. I saw your film. I saw congratulations. Thank you very much. I saw your film. I saw your film a couple of days ago and i are, like everybody else in the sold out screening i was in, is still thinking about it and is still reeling from the sheer ingenuity of this. Have you ever worked so hard ona this. Have you ever worked so hard on a film in terms of pre preparation . On a film in terms of prepreparation . We certainly had a lot of prep, yeah. Every film has its own challenges, but this one was certainly. The prep year was the most important ive ever done, yes. And for anyone who hasnt seen the film yet, it is well documented now that you worked in a. A fair to say, is it fair to say, i slightly usual way, and as a team pull
together seven or eight minute sequences which were then knitted together, so the film looks absolutely seamless. How big a challenge that you think that was when sam mendes put that to you . Originally, he didnt put it to me, he just sent originally, he didnt put it to me, hejust sent me originally, he didnt put it to me, he just sent me the script and it was on the front page on the front cover of the script, the idea that it would be real time any single shot. It seemed a very big challenge at the time, but like any film, you kind of work on it and talk about it and just gradually break down how you need to approach it. You are being very modest, i love that you chuckled at the start of that. That you phone him up and say, sam, do you phone him up and say, sam, do you realise the scope of what youre talking about here . No, wejust you realise the scope of what youre talking about here . No, we just met up talking about here . No, we just met up and started talking about it. You know, you just gradually work your way to something, really. As a viewer, i can tell you it was overwhelming and absolutely
extraordinary to look at. A bit of an expert now, roger, your 15th oscar nomination. Is a . It is, yeah. You 613 to 11 because you want one firm blade runner a couple of years ago. What happens between now and then, do you get ready for the ceremony in . I dont know really, it is just ceremony in . I dont know really, it isjust nice. Im at home and we are not only film anything at the moment, having some time off and is really nice, actually. Congratulations, you are one of the most nominated people ever at the oscars, you are doing us proud. It must be extraordinary to capture a bit of World History like the first world war, which is being covered so many times by so many different film makers, but many times by so many different film makers, but never many times by so many different film makers, but never quite with the ingenuity that you and sam mendes have come up with on that one. I got to thank sam for the chance to work on such a project,
and the opportunity for the challenge. I love a challenge. No, it was great. I am really so pleased about the nomination. And for eve ryo ne about the nomination. And for everyone else that worked on it, all my crew in particular, you know. There are so many people ive worked with for years and it is a tribute to them. It is fantastic. Well, many congratulations again. Certainly all the brits are rooting for you on february nine and congratulations again ona february nine and congratulations again on a really remarkable cinematic achievement. Thank you very much indeed. The cinematographer behind 1917. If you havent had a chance to see yet, certainly in the uk it is only opened a few days ago. Visually it is quite extraordinary. Side mac and allows to concentrate on what is such an often forgotten about aspect of film, they look great, it tells in the snaking breathless way. It really is a work out watching that film. It is like cardio going to
say. And i think it was for the cast and for everyone involved. Lets also talk now to david hayman who i am pleased to sayjoins me. He is producer of Marriage Story and once upona time producer of Marriage Story and once upon a time in hollywood, two very different films. Congratulations to you. Thank you so much. What does it mean to get a nomination, to get nominations like this . Well, you know, it is the knowledge that you have been nominated by your peers and for all the work that everyone has pretend to make these films what they are. It is amazing. I personally pinch myself, but it is just thrilling that everybody across the board has been acknowledged the way they are. Your phone line is a little bit tricky, david, but i am so little bit tricky, david, but i am so keen to talk to you. Im just interested to ask you about the
quentin tarantino film, do you very much see it as a love letter to hollywood . You know, this is clintons most hollywood . You know, this is clintons most quentins most accessible from. He grew up in hollywood and this is anyway a love story to the city and industry that shaped him, his most powerfulfilm. I think it is in some ways, it shows thatis i think it is in some ways, it shows that is not all easy, our obsolescence. But it is a very personal story. Very many thanks for joining us so quickly here on bbc news. The producer of Marriage Story, you can see the style with scarlettjohansson story, you can see the style with Scarlett Joha nsson and adam story, you can see the style with scarlettjohansson and adam driver and Quentin Tarantinos once upon a time in hollywood. Its not all about the brits, but we love to fly
the flag. About the brits, but we love to fly the flag. Well david heymann, about the brits, but we love to fly the flag. Well david heymann, he produced all the harry potter movies, the two paddington movies as well. This is him doing something a bit different. Both of these are very different productions for him. He isa very different productions for him. He is a Great British film producer, but these are very Different Things hes come up with. Working with tarantino for the first time is a very different project, and i think he is like Something Different to tarantino. Normally it is men in suits talking, this is a very different tarantino. Its got all the stuff that youve seen, the shooting announces that you have seen shooting announces that you have seenin shooting announces that you have seen in tarantino before, but i think there is a different element to this one, i think it is about the end of cinemark, it is about the end ofan era, end of cinemark, it is about the end of an era, things changing. People say it is not about sharon tate, its not, is set in the same era as the shanty murders but is very much about Leonardo Dicaprio and brad pitt, both of whom were nominated in
different territories. They are both favourites of a calming, very nice to see them nominated. Brad pitt is a very strong contender to win. I think he is superb and once upon a time in hollywood. Lets take a breath and reflect on the bigger picture. I dont want to get too bogged down in all the numbers, but we do inevitably wonder whos getting the most, what we may be looking out for on the night. Lets start by asking you whether there is any real surprises in here, actually. Anything that out at you . Ive gotjoker leading actually. Anything that out at you . Ive got joker leading away with a living nominations and then ive got 1917 and once upon a time in hollywood and the irishman following up hollywood and the irishman following up with ten. That is a lot of call for four up with ten. That is a lot of call forfour main up with ten. That is a lot of call for four main movies to be taking so many nominations. They are really nominating. We have a nice surprise they from parasite, a Foreign Language movie from korea, a very impressive haul from parasite. I think youll find there is no surprise thatjudy i think youll find there is no surprise that judy garland, or i mean Renee Zellweger is leading the way, so transformative as the role. We will talk more about the best actor and actress category in a moment. First lets speak to another remarkable british success story. Florence pughjoins remarkable british success story. Florence pugh joins us remarkable british success story. Florence pughjoins us on the phone now, nominated for best supporting actress for her role in little women. Congratulations to you. Thank you, hello, good morning. |j women. Congratulations to you. Thank you, hello, good morning. Ithink youre joining you, hello, good morning. Ithink yourejoining from the you, hello, good morning. Ithink youre joining from the us, you, hello, good morning. Ithink yourejoining from the us, very early in the morning where you are. Quite possibly one of the weirdest way cups i think ever have. How did you find out then . Who broke the news . 20 minutes ago i was asleep and then my publicist called me, so all the lights are on now and im trying to wake up as quickly as possible. Youll have a very busy
day ahead. You were nominated for your role in little women at the ba ftas as your role in little women at the baftas as well. Once you get a bafta nomination, do you anticipate this . Doesnt make you more excited for the oscar period . Doesnt make you more excited for the oscar period . I dont think it is ever expected. It is completely bizarre. Ive never got this far in the awards season before. So, i am making sure that im staying awake and taking it all in. This is a crazy feeling. I never assumed this would happen. And ive loved your work since i watch lady macbeth, an independent film that a lot of people might have seen, which was absolutely terrific. I hope you dont mind me saying, florence, you have literally just turned dont mind me saying, florence, you have literallyjust turned 2a dont mind me saying, florence, you have literally just turned 2a and you have already bagged an oscar nomination. That is quite something. I promise to travel to my
journalistic career and missing header to you feel, except i really wa nt to header to you feel, except i really want to you that. 2020 has been amazing so far in the first week of january. Talked as a little bit about little women, we are seeing lots of images of all of you, the cast, laura dern, saoirse ronan, we have been reflecting here a lot and you are aware, is have been reflecting here a lot and you are aware, is a have been reflecting here a lot and you are aware, is a huge issue within the industry generally, even those who love this film, they really wa nted those who love this film, they really wanted to see greta gerwig nominated for best director and again today we have the best director list that is all male. I wonder how that makes you feel as someone wonder how that makes you feel as someone who has been recognised for working on such a female dominated film. I think sauter said it so beautifully around the golden globes, this award is obviously com pletely globes, this award is obviously completely to do with greta. She is in this film, in this there might
writing, everything performance. It is sad, it is hard to navigate, and im not quite sure that i have the answer. But the very fact that last year we had more women and female writers and directors than ever and we are still coming up again then back again is quite an obvious problem, we are talking about it and hopefully it is changing. Set it as she is near, congratulations. Seeing you go from a supporting actress and lady macbeth etc, now in oscar nomination. Its extraordinary. There must be some advice you could give a load of young women back home like you have never really acted before five or six years ago, that suddenly in an amount of time you can get to the top of your game and get oscar and bafta nominations. What advice they give to young
people starting out . what advice they give to young people starting out . I think one thing that i have always believed and always been proud of is that this is because of hard work, i suppose. Youve got to just keep on going. And hopefully you will see something at the end of the tunnel. But i will say that i have only got here because of amazing people that just wanted to help me along as well. Finding a good group of people and a good team, and sticking to what you believe is right to the performance. Florence pugh, lovely to speak to you. Well let you disappear and go to speak to you. Well let you disappearand go and to speak to you. Well let you disappear and go and find a coffee. I will. You have a lot of interviews i had today, im quite sure. Very good luck and good luck, of course, four february nine, thanks so much. And the week before that as well,
because it is the baftas the week before that. Florence pugh is racking up the air miles. Congratulations to her. Lets talk about a different category altogether, because there is of course the best documentary feature category and an extraordinarily powerful and moving film piece of journalism, essentially, nominated. Lets speak to the producers of for sama, set in syria, telling us about life in syria. Many congratulations to both of you. Thanks for having us. What does it mean for your film, for your documentary to have it recognised in this way . A nomination does bring an awful lot more publicity, doesnt it yeah, it is so good now because what is happening
can. It is still happening now in syria, so we are so honoured, to shed the light more about syria and what is happening. When we were working on the film, we didnt expect that. We just thought it would be a difference for someone if they wanted to watch something about syria, but it is bringing a lot of attention to syria and what is happening now. For people who havent seen it, this is about trying to carry on living any country that is absolutely ravaged by warand country that is absolutely ravaged by war and very sadly, and we talk about it within a news context a lot, is still going on today. So you really are shining a light on something most people regrettably simply dont know enough about. That is exactly what we hope with the film, so many people are confused by what is happening in syria, they think everyone isjust what is happening in syria, they think everyone is just as bad what is happening in syria, they think everyone isjust as bad as each other in that conflict, but what you see in the film is really
the essence of it, which is people just like oz, people who have the same sense of humour, quite a british sense of humour, the same ideas and values who are protesting for their basic rights that we take for their basic rights that we take for granted and being met by the most barbaric level of violence by the government that think weve seen since the second world war. That is the truth of what is happening in syria and that is what the film shows. We just hope because of this more and more people will have a chance to watch it and connect with that story. Thank you. Congratulations and best wishes to you for february nine. There is a female film maker nominated. Sama is her daughter, the documentary is made for her daughter. Much more coverage of all this right today on bbc news and stay with us for oscar day itself and the baftas as well, of course. Sunday the 9th of
february and the weekend before for the baftas. That is it for now. Enjoy your cinema going. This band of rain is pushing its way a little bit further east, the snow over the hills of scotland too.
