His son lachlan said his dad would never retire. His companies have been shrinking over the years and struggling against the Media Headwinds that all Media Companies are facing. For example, streaming and the struggles of newspapers. Rupert murdoch is not the swashbuckling feared and reviled media mogul that he once was. That he was for decades. He was strangely passive in recent years as his Fox News Network in the us promoted lies about voter fraud in 2020. Fox is mostly an American Company with fox news and the studio, at least what remains of the studio. It is notable he prefers to be in australia that has opened him up to criticism that he is not fully managing the company. I will say at the same time with that dominion lawsuit, we saw the e mails and Text Messages that showed that he was involved with fox news in some way. The us president , joe biden, will shortly host ukraine s Volodymyr Zelensky at the white house. It s mr zelensky s second wartime visit to washington. He s trying to shore up us support for the fight against russia s invasion, at a time when there are signs of warfatigue among some us politicians. This was the ukrainian leader arriving on capitol hill a short while ago. He s now talking to republican and Democratic Leaders in the us congress, where a new multi billion dollar aid package for ukraine is at risk of being blocked. Mr zelensky will also head to the pentagon in the next hour or so, as he seeks more weapons, including longer range missiles to boost ukraine s defences. Live now to our North America correspondent gary o donoghue. He is at the white house for us. Good to talk to you. This is the second time mr zelensky has been in washington. It is going to be a really trip differ to last time . It 3 going to be a really different trip. If you remember back in december, when president zelensky gave that joint address to congress, both houses of congress, he had a standing ovation, he unveiled ukrainian flags behind him, he was a conquering hero in some ways. This time the news is very different because republicans have really cooled, orsome because republicans have really cooled, or some have really cooled on the whole business of funding the war and that is reflected, i think, to some degree in the Opinion Polls here in the us. Republicans asking questions about how the money is being spent, white is being spent, and balking at the idea of the white house asking for it extra 2a billion, all getting wrapped up in another kind of cliffhanger end of term, end of Financial Year crisis in congress, where the money runs out in nine days, we are looking at a potential government shutdown, and ukraine and ukrainian funding could be part of one of the things that suffers as a result of that. That is fascinating suffers as a result of that. That is fascinating because suffers as a result of that. That is fascinating because we suffers as a result of that. That is fascinating because we know suffers as a result of that. That is. Fascinating because we know those issues can end up being a key Bargaining Chips when it comes to avoiding a government shutdown. We are looking towards a president ial election year. I dont think there is any question that ukraine will be ukraine . I dont think there is any question that ukraine will be an. Question that ukraine will be an issue in the election. We have already seen it come up in the first of the primary debates for the republicans. It is something that does seem to divide the country in a partisan way in particular, not exclusively, but pretty much in a partisan way. And of course donald trump weighing in with his scepticism about ukraine funding, his positive words about vladimir putin, that changes the weather for republicans and what they feel they can say and do. This is going to become even more difficult for the white house as time goes on to get its funding over the next year or so. Of course it comes at a point where they are under a lot of pressure from ukraine to supply these longer range missiles, the missiles that ukrainians say they need to reach the entirety of Russian Forces inside their borders. And that isjust Russian Forces inside their borders. And that is just at the end of a long Shopping List of things that the us has already been supplying. The problem with the holding up of the money at the moment is that well north of 100 billion has already been set aside, but a lot of it has been set aside, but a lot of it has been spent. There is really not much left in the coffers and if there is no more money forthcoming immediately that could seriously damage the offensive in ukraine, even though European Countries are starting to give more. The Polish Government says it is still carrying out previously agreed deliveries of weapons and ammunition to ukraine. The statement was issued a day after the polish Prime Minister, mateusz morawiecki, said his country was no longer supplying arms to its neighbour. His comments marked another step in the worsening relationship between the countries. It s linked to an argument over grain. Russia blocked many Export Routes of Ukrainian Grain following its invasion last year. This led to grain flooding the market in Central Europe and to the eu Banning Imports in order to protect its own suppliers. Last week the Eu Import Ban was lifted, but poland along with slovenia and hungary kept it in place. Yesterday president zelensky criticised the move at the un, sparking the reaction from the Polish Government. Apologies, we don t have that clip to play you. Let s go live to warsaw and our Eastern Europe correspondent sarah rainsford. How significant is that this development, given the close ties that poland and ukraine have shared recently when it comes to the war . I think it is precisely because of those close ties and that s really staunch support that poland has shown since the beginning of the war, the beginning of russia s full scale invasion of ukraine. That is why these comments are so significant because they are not the first. At the heart of this is a dispute over grain. The latest comments by the ukrainian president at the un talking about those who were resisting imports of Ukrainian Grain, basically playing into russia s hands. Those comments went down really badly here in poland. The backlash was instant, the government here talking again very critically of ukraine and specifically essentially escalating ijy specifically essentially escalating by saying, ok, we re stopping the transfer of weapons. But you look more closely at what the Prime Minister said, more closely at what the Prime Ministersaid, he more closely at what the Prime Minister said, he said there would be no further transfers of weapons, and then he said that is basically because poland has run out. They have already given all of their old stocks to ukraine. There has been huge support in the last year and a half or so and now poland needs to concentrate on building up its own supplies back at home. But there has been an awful lot of commentary since then from the governance line, look, we are back in ukraine, we support ukraine, but we have to protect polish interest, as well, and that is notjust their military interest, but also about the grain. The farm is here, the conservative rural voters are vital to this government, and we are in an election campaign. Less than a month until elections, the government is scrambling for every single vote. That includes those farmers and also includes the voters on the more far right here in poland, who are particularly critical of ukraine and believe that ukrainians for example here in poland, refugees, getting too much and the polish are suffering as a result. Essentially ukraine has become a card that is being played in the polish domestic elections, which is worrying precisely because poland has been such a staunch supporter of ukraine for so many years love for so many months. W. , for so many years love for so many months. ,. ,. , for so many years love for so many months,. ,. ,. Months. Sarah rainsford in walso, thank you we can speak to paul knott, a former british diplomat who s spent time in ukraine and russia. Thank you forjoining us. Lots to go through. Let s start with president zelensky in the us. He is going in with another Shopping List. He needs more support. How much is to get . I think its going to continue, the think it s going to continue, the support, obviously, as time goes by it gets more and more difficult as the us approaches its own elections next year. It is, i suppose, extreme wing, it has ceased on ukraine issue are something they want to push on in the traditional isolation of us politics. I think at the moment you can also not forget there is quite a substantial part of the Republican Party that is still quite supportive of ukraine, including significant Trump Supporters like senator lindsey graham, i think that is still the case. It is not drastic yet but this is a continued effort ijy yet but this is a continued effort by zelensky and ukraine to try to keep shoring up the support, keep the support coming, it s really important. The support coming, its really important the support coming, its really imortant. ,. ,. , important. This comes at a very different time. Important. This comes at a very different time. A important. You are in a different situation now, and i think russia is purely trying to cling on to what it has taken already so it is very much ukraine having to force itself forward. What is really important about the trip to the us and the zelensky s conversations with other supporters in western and Central Europe in particular, is tojust. They in western and Central Europe in particular, is to just. They need more of the kind of weapons that will help them in offensive push, to push forward quicker and hopefully get this over at much more quickly. 0k, get this over at much more quickly. Ok, and very briefly, how significant is it that he has gone to the un, as well as to congress, and then he s going to be meeting joe biden at the white house . Aha, joe biden at the white house . Packed schedule in the us and. It is. Of course it is the perfect week, the Un General Assembly week, where many leaders from, i suppose, sort of different parts of the world, asia, africa, latin america, they have often been a bit more lukewarm in their support for ukraine and it is a chance for it zelensky, who we have all seen over the last two years, he is kind of a master communicator, to try and enlist some of those leaders of countries a bit more behind ukraine. It sounds like that is not going to shift over but it sounds like he has made a very good case to them and, yes, the us is the country with the biggest capacity to supply Military Equipment as well as funding to shore up the economy, the europeans are doing a lot and doing more, but the us is still pretty important, so he must keep going with this trying to keep as many politically influential people on side and behind ukraine. Our top story is that Rupert Murdoch has announced his retirement as chairman of fox and news core, Handing Control to his son. Stay with us on bbc news. Good afternoon. A little less windy for the majority today, but on the whole, the weather still rather unsettled. We ve got further showers to come in fact, we ve already had rumbles of thunder and flashes of lightning. This, of course, the overnight rain across southern and eastern areas that gave a good 30 to a0 millimetres for most. More rain today for the north, and these lumps of cloud are those intense showers that have been pushing their way or developing further north and east with time. They won t be for all, but when they do occur, there will be some lively downpours, as i ve already mentioned. A wetter afternoon, as well, across Northern Ireland into the evening rush, for southern parts of scotland, and some showers developing towards the late evening across southern and eastern areas. And it is a fresher feeling day out there, but still 18s in southern and eastern areas. As i mentioned, though, some heavier showers potentially pushing back into Eastern Parts of england. The rain further north pushing southwards and fragmenting. But the big Talking Point about tonight is it will feel fresher notably so across southern and eastern areas. Quite a chilly start to our friday morning. And that chill accentuated by this brisk northerly wind, or northwesterly, blowing across scotland, Northern Ireland and down across england and wales particularly around the irish sea coast, pushing those showers southward. So it s another day of sunny spells and scattered heavy showers. As i say, that wind coming down from the north or northwest a fairly brisk affair which will make it feel a little cooler still cooler than the 15 to 18 would suggest in the south. But with some shelter from that breeze, with some sunshine, still a very pleasant 15 to 18 for almost late september. Then, as we head through friday night into saturday, there s a brief ridge of High Pressure before the atlantic weather systems return. That means it will be a chilly start on saturday morning could be close to freezing in the glens of scotland. One or two patches of mist but i think for the most part, a decent day. The cloud does tend to pile in through the day and you can see for Northern Ireland it turns wetter towards the evening. But actually with the lighter winds further east, and some sunshine, 15 or 16 feeling quite pleasant. But as we go into sunday, our next atlantic low rolls in in here, some tropical moisture from the remains of hurricane nigel, which means, again, there could be some really quite wet weather particularly in the west and the north and some strong winds, but with it some warmer air, as well. But it s a generally unsettled picture into next week, as well. There s more online. This is bbc news, the headlines. Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch is to step down as chairman of fox and news corp.
