Brexit. In the last few hours the uk government has launched a Brexit Business Task force to help industry prepare for life outside the eu. It promises that Business Leaders will meet with senior ministers every week to discuss the challenges and opportunities ahead. The governments own research has found less than a quarter of Companies Just 24 say they are fully ready. Remember, existing trading arrangements expire on december 31st, with the end of the transition period. But what companies are supposed to be preparing for is still unclear. The uk and eu remain unable to reach a trade deal following talks this week, with a deadline of the middle of november now looking certain to be missed. Alex veitch is general manager of Public Policy at logistics uk, the trade body for the transport industry. Thank you for being on the programme. From your perspective, what are the key issues as we head, as we hurtled issues as we head, as we hu rtled towards issues as we head, as we hurtled towards december the sist . Hurtled towards december the 31st . Good morning to you. Thanks for having me on. There are two sets of issues. The first is the lack of clear written user friendly guidelines for businesses across the logistics sector, so they know precisely what they have to do to get their goods, particularly from the uk to the eu, but also from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. I will give you one example of that. We have been pushing with government for some weeks now to produce a clear hold handbook. We understand now it wont be ready until a week before christmas. If you bear in mind more than 80 of the trucks you see coming in and out of dover, from folkestone to calais, that takes a couple of weeks to get it translated into multiple languages and delivered to drivers across europe. That is an issue. That must be accelerated. The other major problem is more about policy and process. And that is to do with moving goods from gb to do with moving goods from gb to Northern Ireland. They are, there will be significant administrative burdens placed on all kinds of businesses, which the logistics firms will have to implement. And ourselves and major retailers are asking for simplified procedures, so that if you are selling goods in Northern Ireland, he should be able to move them from your warehouse in gb to your Retail Outlet in Northern Ireland with a minimum of fuss, a minimum of declarations and other hurdles. Its a combination of the need for user friendly guidance and the need for simplified procedures, particularly to make sure that Northern Ireland is fully stocked and ready to go is fully stocked and ready to 9 by is fully stocked and ready to go by the ist of january. Is fully stocked and ready to go by the ist ofjanuary. You have go by the lst ofjanuary. You have very clearly outline what is required. The challenges that are ahead. We have very little time to sort these issues out. How does this Brexit Business Task force that meets once a week, that will be chaired by michael golf, help from your perspective . Will you be invited on it, will you be there to say, this is what is required . All Business Engagement is welcome. We are engaging with government on a regular basis, ourselves, collea g u es regular basis, ourselves, colleagues in the logistics sector, and all sectors, have been engaging the government throughout. I want to flag up in particular hmrc, the Customs Department have been excellent with their engagement. We have not been invited onto this particular task force, however, we wish it all the best and we are slightly concerned that the sector at the sharp end of this, logistics, seems to be on the substitutes p regarding this particular task force. Nonetheless, all engagement is welcome. Its really important to get the manufacturers, the retailers and the Business Community absolutely ready to go for brexit, because they are the ones that will provide the paperwork to our members to get goods across the border. How worried are you about what is going to happen injanuary the ist next year . Going to happen injanuary the 1st next year . Yeah, we have got significant concerns at this point. The diary the dial is moving closer to red from amber. The number one concern from the movements of goods point of view is the export of goods from the uk to the eu, simply because the eu will definitely introduce what they call rest of world trade procedures on the ist of january, which means that if you are exporting to the eu, you are exporting to the eu, you must now Pay Attention to the guidance that is available, you must look at your own business needs, what your business needs, what your Business Partners in the eu need to do, find a customs agent, get the relevant trader id number of sorted out, work out how you are going to implement and produce the data needed to take your goods to market. You must do that. Alex, thank you very much indeed. And thank you very much indeed. And thank you very much indeed. And thank you for the clear advice. General manager of Public Policy logistics uk. More detail on that on the website. The president of the European Central bank has warned the regions economic recovery could be bumpy, despite the euphoria over a covid i9 vaccine. Stock markets have soared this week after us drug giant pfizer and its german partner biontech reported 90 effectiveness in phase three trials of their vaccine. But Christine Lagarde told a banking forum, the crisis that has cost five million european jobs and seen a record economic slump is farfrom over. We are seeing a strong resurgence of the virus and this has introduced a new dynamic. While the latest news ona dynamic. While the latest news on a vaccine looks encouraging, we could still face recurring cycles of accelerating viral spread and tightening restrictions until widespread immunity is achieved. Above all, we must ensure that this exceptional downturn remains just that exceptional and does not turn into a more conventional recession that feeds on itself. Even if this second wave of the virus proved to be less intense than the first, it poses no less danger to the economy. George buckley is chief uk and euro area economist at nomura. George, good to see you. Are you as pessimistic . Well, i think economists are currently scrambling to think about their forecasts for Economic Growth and how things, out of this drug will change things. Most economists had been expecting some gradual dissipation of the virus over the course of 2021, 2022, but this does change the narrative. It suggests we could see a pivot point, if you will, in gp, in the economy, and we could see the economy recover more quickly if these wires works, and if it is able to be distributed very widely very quickly. If this vaccine works. It all depends on who you are and what you are doing as to whether you experience a swift recovery or not. I am just thinking about Government Schemes in Different Countries across europe to support those who have been furloughed, out of work, or businesses, they will come to an end in 2021, wont they . That is when things will get really tough, wont they . Well, at the moment, the uk is in lockdown, many European Countries are in lockdown. The virus is not progressing in the direction we would like to. We have to bear in mind that right now, things are looking still very tricky. I would not be surprised at all if we see economic output contract in the final quarter of this year, may be the First Quarter of next year. But beyond that, i think things are looking more optimistic. That is why the government has been ina is why the government has been in a position to say, well, we should try to enter the support schemes, the furlough scheme, in march. But i suspect if things are not looking as positive as we hope they will be in march, they will have to extend it. But at the moment i think there is hope from this vaccine that that will be the case, that they can ended and we can start to move towards, and progress towards, more normal economic conditions. Is that youre thinking with regards to the europe area, where the European Central bank, of course, has its governance . Christine legarde is talking about europe as opposed to the uk. Yes, absolutely. I think we are going to see a recovery in europe over the course of 2021. We are also going to see this morning, for example, gp in the uk, which is likely to bounce very significantly. There are some encouraging signs that the recovery will be on track eventually, but i think its true not just eventually, but i think its true notjust in the uk but across europe that we will see recovery. It is worth bearing in mind as well the amount of fiscal and Monetary Policy being poured into this is absolutely huge, which of course is also positive for the recovery. Lets hope you are right. George buckley, thank you. Has the clock run out for tiktok in the us . President trump says the video sharing app poses a Security Risk to its 100 million users in america. He gave the chinese owners 90 days to sell it off, or face a ban on downloads in the us. That was back in august, and the deadline is today. Joining me now is chelsea rodstrom, Research Analyst at global x etfs in new york. Thank you forjoining us despite the fact it is very late at night where you are. Ring us up to date, chelsea, because it is hard to keep up with this story . At one stage we thought microsoft was buying tiktok, than walmart. What is going on . Sure. We saw a Huge Development in the last hour. The Us Treasury Department came out to say that they are still working towards a resolution with tiktok. This is huge news because tiktok has been waiting on this. It is not necessarily a definite extension. Rather, we expect this indefinite extension of this review process. They are likely to continue reviewing the deal with tiktok and the proposed investitu re with tiktok and the proposed investiture and deal with 0 ra cle investiture and deal with oracle and walmart. While any Court Proceedings or appeals are likely to extend out beyond the current administration. It sounds like the canon has been kicked down the road. In the meantime we have a new president taking over in the 20th of january. What will that mean . Its kind of uncertain at this point what a Biden Administrations approach in china would be and what it would specifically be on tiktok. We have seen growing bipartisan support for pressure against china, especially within the Information Technology space. But we are also expecting to see sort of a shift from the Biden Administration towards a more consensus based approach with their international partners, through more traditional means of diplomacy. What effect has all of this had on those who use tiktok in the us . Has there been a drop off because of concern . In anything i think we have seen you to ship increase. Anecdotally i have many friends who downloaded the app back in september. They are extremely avid users of tiktoks platform. It is important to remember also that tiktok is obviously a growing phenomenon here in the us. But us users represent a small fraction of tiktoks overall operation. The local version of tiktok in china accounts for about 70 of the revenues. Whereas us reve nu es the revenues. Whereas us revenues represent only about 20 of overall revenues. Interesting. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Sonys latest playstation, the ps 5, has gone on sale in north america and its core asian markets, including japan, south korea and australia. Games fans in the rest of the world will have to wait until november 19. Gaming has had a huge boost from global lockdowns, but the pandemic has meant the launch looks a little different this time. It is all part of their push to be socially responsible. They are calling for consumers to be safe, stay home and place orders online. We know the next generation console retails for a cool 500, was really sold out on major retailing sites injapan. A p pa re ntly major retailing sites injapan. Apparently lotteries had to be conducted online to try to distribute the very limited numbers available, which drove up numbers available, which drove up prices, to as much as 900. Todayis up prices, to as much as 900. Today is the first day of real world sales, but a lot of it has been limited to pre order pick ups due to the code 19 pandemic, as you can imagine. Bear in mind the consoles predecessor, playstation four, was the most popular console of its generation, with more than hundred and i2 generation, with more than hundred and 12 million sold worldwide. Sony is looking to replicate that success. What is so different about the new version, you might ask . Sony says it offers cutting edge graphics, faster load times, a new controller with immersive feedback. This is allmusic to the ears of consumers all over the ears of consumers all over the who are flocking to new gaming consoles due to the pandemic, which has been limiting a lot of social interaction for a lot of us. But all of this really has a strained supply chains. There isa strained supply chains. If youve been inspired to take up the guitar during lockdown, you are far from alone. Guitar makers gibson and fender say 2020 is shaping up to be their biggest year for sales ever. Downloads of fenders guitar teaching app have soared sevenfold too. Its a huge turnaround for rival gibson which just two years ago had to file for bankruptcy protection. James jc curleigh is chief executive of gibson brands. Great to have you on the programme. Is it all down to lough dan, is that why you have seen such a turnaround at gibson . Lockdown. Seen such a turnaround at gibson . Lockdown. I dont think so. Through the course of generations music has always inspired people and certainly at gibson for 126 years we have been inspiring people, creating and supporting sand. If you ask the average person what they like to play music, everybody would say yes. 0ften like to play music, everybody would say yes. Often they dont have the time, they dont have the talent, they dont have the right instrument, the right learning opportunity. Well, whats happened during this covert crisis is we have had this covid creativity moment, where people have the time, they have the instrument, and they have the instrument, and they can learn it online, so why not take the opportunity now . Absolutely. Why not . Im thinking about it myself, actually what have people been buying . We want to make sure that guitars all guitars, i think music went through a phase. Now there are guitars for every stage, really good guitars for beginners who want to play. 0ur ip phone guitars are for every stage. Then clearly the iconic gibson is one people aspire to. The centrepoint is our authenticity. People can buy an authenticity. People can buy an authentic instrument for a few hundred pounds or a few thousand pounds. Buy a guitar that works for them. It also by the ability to learn and create some moments with friends around music. 0nce some moments with friends around music. Once people start to find a few chords, get the confidence, at what point does somebody go from saying i want to try guitar to i am a guitar player . What we have seen in the last six months, more guitar players are being created than probably the previous six years. Its amazing that we can create this. Unfortunately for the wrong circumstances, the right solution for someone to have an opportunity to learn the guitar. We think there are a whole generation of guitarists being born because of the covid crisis. That is one of the fantastic unintended consequences, im sure. Have you been able to meet demand . We have. If you want to go back to charles dickens, it was the best of times, the worst of times. We came in injanuary of this year. We had momentum. We will our brand to connect with artists. We are really excited about what we were doing. The pandemic came, factories shut down, guitar shops shut down, a little bit of Online Activity but not enough to make up for it. Then all of a sudden once people realised that there was time and a little bit of opportunity, we opened up our factories with the right protocol, of course, and we we re protocol, of course, and we were able to support all the dealers who could actually go online who are buying guitars online, and now we have a situation where we have more demand than we can actually make right now. Here in nashville we have our gibson custom shop. We have put on second shifts and worked with are partners to see how we can get more guitars into the hands of people who want to play. Good luck with that. Thank you so much forjoining us live. Thank you so much. Chief executive of gibson. To india now, where two thirds of the population are under 35. According to the world bank, india needs to create eight million jobs a yearjust to keep up with the pace of young people entering the labour market. But as the pandemic ravages the economy, millions are being left without work or prospects, as Nikhil Inamdar reports. It was scenes like this when india announced a nationwide lockdown earlier this year. Millions of Migrant Workers are suddenly thrown out of work and rushing to go home. But while the restrictions have eased, millions are stilljobless, many younger workers. With two thirds of its population under the age of 35, the World Bank Estimates india needs to create 8 million jobs annually to absorb Young Indians entering the workforce. But in the last decade, while the economy grew at a healthy pace, not even half as many jobs were being created each year. That is what known as jobless growth. In the sense of this double disruption. That this double disruption. That this double disruption is on the one hand the pandemic and the one hand the pandemic and the recession that that has created, combined with the threat of automation. That was frankly there already for some yea rs frankly there already for some years but is essentially being accelerated at this present time. Governments across the political spectrum have not been able to solve the job is but countries like china, bangladesh and vietnam were creating a labour intensive manufacturing sector. India failed to do so. A difficult business environment, complex business environment, complex business regulation and the lack of right skills are to blame. We havent been good at delivering traditional skills. Now we are faced with a situation where we have to develop new skills. Exactly how thatis develop new skills. Exactly how that is going to happen is a huge challenge. Battling the pandemic may be the governments top priority now, but unless swift action is taken on the jobs front, there may be an even bigger challenge facing an entire generation of indians in the future. So you are now up to date with all the top business stories. And the news. Thank you for your company. Have a lovely day. I will see you soon. Hello there. The weather will quieten down for a day or so before it turns more unsettled as we move towards the end of the week and the weekend. But todays dry and settled weather is thanks to a ridge of High Pressure. But it wont last long as cloud and showers start to push into Western Areas. Now thats the overnight wind and rain clearing away from the east coast. This ridge of High Pressure settles things down briefly before the next low pressure moves into the west of the uk through the afternoon. So we could have a hang back of clouds and showers for a time across the east, hanging around shetland pretty much all day. And much of the country is dry with plenty of sunshine around, but youll see the clouds thickening up out west. Outbreaks of rain pushing in here, more prolonged rain pushing in for western scotland by the end of the day, along with the strengthening winds. Temperatures down on what we had yesterday, 10 13 celsius. Now its dry for much of central and eastern parts of the country as we head through the course of the night, but this band of rain, some of it heavy, and strong winds slowly pushing eastwards followed by some blustery showers. Very windy conditions across the northwest of scotland, but a pretty blustery night for most areas. Those temperatures generally in single figures high single figures, mind you, we could see 9 10 celsius across the south of england. So this is the pressure chart for friday, low pressure to the north west of the uk, lots of isobars in the northwest, so very windy here. But it will still be quite gusty with this band of rain lying through central parts of the country for friday morning. That should eventually clear way to the north sea, and skies will brighten up for most of the afternoon. But therell be lots of showers rattling into northern and Western Areas some of these will be heavy and quite frequent with rumbles of thunder across the northwest of scotland. Those temperatures 10 13 celsius, and with the wind it will feel on the cool side, despite it being fairly mild. The low pressure really dominates the scene as we head to the weekend. You can see lots isobars on the chart, particularly across the south of the country, and plenty of weather fronts indicating some rain. After the last few cool days, it looks like itll turn milder again into the weekend, particularly on saturday. Something slightly cooler pushing in from west as we head through sunday, especially across the north of the uk. So a pretty wild weekend in store, some heavy rain around, strong winds, gales across the south coast. Very mild for a time on saturday, feeling a little bit fresher on sunday. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Naga Munchetty and charlie stayt. 0ur headlines today.
