Teenagers who lost friends, classmates and mentors. Im glad that people are starting to notice that this is something that we need to face. And when politicians say now is not the time, i want to ask them, when is . How many more children need to die . Things need to change. Nothing is going to be different if we dont change anything. I would like to say that this shouldnt be a fight between two different parties. This should be a coming together where we all realize that something is wrong and even if we disagree on the way to fix it, we all just need to talk about it and stop being angry and stop slandering other people that doesnt help anyone. Thats why people died. Because we just cant get along. And the heart broken community of parkland also grappling with another cruel reality that there were warning signs of a future killer lurking in their midst. Could this massacre have been prevented . Cnns rosa flores in parkland with the latest on what we have learned about the gunman. Rosa . Reporter fred, we have learned disturbing details. First of all, that 150 shots were fired and this happened within minutes because were also getting the minute by minute detail from the police. Let me take you through this. According to the police, they say that this individual arrived at about 2 19 p. M. , within 2 and a half minutes he starts firing the gunshots. About 67 6 to 7 minutes later he stops the gunshot, he sets the ar15 style rifle down and he starts fleeing the scene, blending in with students. Thats how he was able to get away from the school, he stops by a subway and buys a sandwich and a drink and after that, he stops by a mcdonalds and is there for a few minutes. And then he decides to walk to a residential area and thats where a Police Officer from Coconut CreekPolice Department got wind of him. He saw the suspect walking by, and this officer says that his training kicked in, he identified the suspect, based on the description that was coming through his radio and he was able to apprehend him without incident. Now, police are still scouring through a lot of the evidence and theyre also learning and as we are learning as well, about his digital footprint and police are very disturbed by what theyre finding. There is a second Instagram Account that shows his face masked, also images, photographs of an arsenal of weapons, and also of the suspect with knives. There is also another video that has surfaced that shows this gunman and this was taken by a neighbor, doing target practice outside of his house and then from police reports, we have also learned that the police was called to his home 39 times since 2010. The description of those visits are a little vague. Saying that, quote, unquote, a mentally ill person was involved or a domestic disturbance, we dont have a lot of those details, but, again, this is these are some of the clues that authorities are also looking into, and, fred, i want to leave you with this picture, because i want you to take a look behind me, this is the first time that we have seen people Walking Around the parking lot here at the school, as you take a close look. And what looks like is happening is people are, for the first time, able to get their vehicles from this scene because until now it had been an active scene. But take a look, were seeing individuals and we dont know exactly who they are, but perhaps staff or administrators driving off from this active scene. Fred . All right, rosa flores, thank you so much, keep us posted there from parkland. Lets bring in cnn Law Enforcement analyst james gagliano, retired special advisory agent at the fbi. So we have learned a lot about this shooter. Unleashing nearly 150 shots from his ar15. That this happened in a span of six to seven minutes. And that he knew at the end of school about the pattern of students there, given he had already been there and had been expelled. What does this tell you about his calculations when you add all of this up . Sure, fred. And i think that the shooter meets kind of some of the standard active shooter profiles and there is a part of him that were still trying to dig into and get some answers to. Keep in mind, it has been just under 48 hours since this shooting happened. So police are going back now and exhaustively trying to piece together some more pieces of this puzzle to try to give us some more clarity in this. Now, it is every Law Enforcement professionals nightmare that there might have been a couple of dots that needed to be connected that werent. Im going to hold off because were going to wait until we get some official reports in regards to what was actually done with the social media profile, that has been presented that said he had made some statements that were worthy of Law Enforcement interests. Now, in this country we have First Amendment protections. And online you have people, especially in the video, the violent video game kind of culture that we live in that say some crazy things. Things about the president , or make statements hastily or impulsively. And thats all got to be sorted out. What happens is the fbi dispatches people to do what we call a knock and talk, which you would hope would happen in this instance, to basically make an assessment. Again, investigators are fallible human beings and sometimes those judgments have to be done when people say crazy things, and that happens every day, thousands and thousands times online, sorting through it and figuring out which ones are going to be the real threat. Sure, james. In this culture and this day and age, were all there is this, you know, overriding edict, if you see something, you say something. We know someone saw something, saw that dangerous language on youtube, i want to be a professional, you know, killer at a school. That is enough to precipitate some real interest with a name that can also be attached with already established as we heard from rosas reporting 39 visits to his home. Why wouldnt there be some sort of local tracking or wellness checks as you put it, the knock and visit, of this individual, when already there has been an established pattern of some trouble . Or problems . I think, you know, as i heard said a number of times over the past couple of days, we cant look at any of these things in a vacuum. Im in the suggesting you are. You piece all the pieces together, we have to take we have to take a serious look at the second amendment. I am a retired Law Enforcement professional, im a gun owner, im a hunter. We have to take a look at this. You see some real holes in the in the area of how someone can acquire weaponry, at what age, what are the circumstances, but it doesnt necessarily mean jeopardizing the second amendment. People can still have their guns, but youre saying that there ought to be some more proposed restrictions . Absolutely. And, you know, unfortunately were on the continuum where we want the right to privacy, we want civil liberties, and we have protections. Hipaa and firpa protects us if you Seek Mental Health consultations. You had a 19yearold kid able to buy an assault weapon. People will argue about the definition of an assault weapon. Ive seen people up close and personal shot by that weapon, a 223 round. Those type of weapons, they have collapsible stocks, they could have pistol grips, they could have detachable magazines in the 20 to 30 round range. Shrouded barrels, flash suppressors. They are not. I will argue this when i heard senator nelson right before i went on describe the scene as carnage, that is a term we use for the death and destruction laid in the wake of war. Yeah. All right. James gagliano, thank you so much. Were going to have to leave it right there. This morning, the first funeral for a victim of wednesdays killing rampage, Alyssa Alhadeff was just 14 years old. Yesterday her grief stricken mother unleashed some of her anger and heart break and delivered a blistering rebuke aimed directly at the president of the united states. The gunman, a crazy person, just walks right into the school, knocks down the window of my childs door and starts shooting. Shooting her. And killing her. President trump, you say what can you do . You can stop the guns from getting into these childrens hands. This is not fair. Our family, our children go to school, and they have to get killed i just spent the last two hours putting the burial arrangements for my daughters funeral, who is 14 President Trump, please do something cnns gary tuchman is outside alyssas funeral, powerful words, the heartache is felt by everyone, gary. Reporter so heart breaking. Inside this funeral behind me, the people who meant the most to alyssa, her mom and dad, her two younger brothers, other relatives, friends from summer camp and friends from high school, the survivors of the shooting. The service is just ending as we speak, people are just leaving. What happened inside is this. Alyssa was mourned, but her life was also celebrated. As people were walking in, i was asking them to describe alyssa, and it was the same adjectives that kept coming out, smart, friendly, athletic, caring. This 14yearold was destined for great things. And she had wonderful parents, parents we met last night for first time, lori and alan, obviously devastatedevastated, stricken, in shock. It take time sometimes to realize. They have so much support from this community. And from this country. And theyre already thinking about other children. Youll hear that in this interview they did this morning on cnns new day. My child is dead. I cant help her. But i can help all those other kid at Stoneman Douglas high school and all the other kids in america and around the world. We have to protect our children. We have to fight for them. It is the time to talk about now and tomorrow and the next day and the next day after that and every day after until all of this is resolved. We cannot continue in a Civil Society like this. We got to do Something Different than has been done before. We need some radical change. Just a couple of weeks ago, this family was this family, this very festive happy time, one of her younger brothers celebrated his bar mitzvah. Now this. Fredricka. Tragic. All right, gary tuchman, thank you so much. It was just last year that parkland, florida, was named the safest city in florida. That title and the relative innocence it projects was erased in that explosion of bullets on wednesday. Our next guest is mark boggan, the vice mayor of Broward County. And mr. Vice mayor, our hearts go out to all of you. So how is the Community Holding up there in your view . You know, we have a devastated community from this horrific event. And theyre in mourning. Theyre in mourning. We have funerals as you just mentioned earlier. We have funerals going on today. And in the future. And it is going to take a long time to get over this. It is impressive. These young people are extremely it is impressive that the young people are extremely outspoken, while they are also, you know, coupled with this grief. People have talked about warning signs as well, about this young man. What do you think was missed . Well, you know, what i think is that the elected officials of this state, the governor and many state legislators, are focusing on the individual. When the focus should really be on the laws that allowed this individual to obtain an assault weapon as a teenager. Okay, so right now this is not about guns, this is not about the second amendment, this is about two words really, about assault weapons and what the laws allow teenagers to obtain. Thats really the problem, i believe, it is a problem here in our society. And that may be a longterm approach if there is going to be anything done. What do you want done most immediately, if anything . Well, i mean, look, if you just look at the statistics, the last five out of the six mass deadliest shootings in the past six years has been with an assault weapon. You look at the past year how many School Shootings there has been, you just keep going on about how assault weapons are playing a major role in the mass deadliest shootings here in this country, we need to have laws that do not allow teenagers to buy assault weapons. It is that simple. I have many friends who belong to the nra, i have many friends who have concealed weapons permits, guns, but all telling me the same thing, and that we need to do something about assault weapons and thats something that can be done tomorrow, with the governor and our state legislature. But instead, you have elected officials coming here, the governor was here, our president of the state senate was here, and what theyre doing, theyre expressing grief and their support for the families, but they go back and they support laws and enact laws that allow this to happen. And thats the tragedy as well. Your feeling is they can take care of that immediately, not longterm. President trump just tweeted not long ago, im quoting now, i will be leaving for florida today to meet with some of the bravest people on earth. But people whose lives have been totally shattered. And im also working with congress on many fronts. Are you looking forward to the president s visit and what do you expect he will be met with when he arrives, if he arrives there . Well, i can speak only as a Broward County commissioner and vice mayor, i speak for myself and him coming here to me is absurd. Him being coming here is absolutely absurd. And hes a hypocrite. How can you come here and talk about how horrible it is when you support these laws. And what is most interesting, what i just learned, is one year ago this month, the president reversed a rule banning mentally ill people from purchasing a gun. So President Trump now based on his actions, allows mentally ill people to purchase guns when over a year ago they could not. So this is a man who supports people to do buy weapons and comes here and wants to act as though this is horrible, this shouldnt happen, but goes back to washington and supports it. It is hypocrisy, it is absolute hypocrisy. Vice mayor mark bogen, thank you for your time. Thank you, fredricka. This is a devastating time for the people there. I lost two of my closest people to me because of guns. And no one is doing anything about it. Students and parents are demanding that Congress Move past political differences to enact stricter gun control laws. Im joined by democratic congresswoman barbara lee of california, a long time advocate for gun safety measures. Congresswoman, good to see you. You tweeted that Congressional Republicans need to, quoting you now, start putting childrens lives ahead of the nra. Is this the moment where politics are put aside for action . Were past that moment, fredricka. First, let me just say my heart, like the hearts of everyone in this country, is broken. Were grieving. Our country is in the state of mourning. And were going to continue to pray for the victims and the families and the parkland community. And those of us who are public policymakers need to take action. We need to move forward. And the time is now. We know that 80 of the public supports common sense gun control and gun safety measures. For example, background checks, i know last year we had over 190 cosponsors on that legislation. If speaker ryan would bring up some of these bills, i know they could get passed. Yes, the nra really has a lot of control. And we need to put the lives of our children and of the 30,000 of the americans and people in our kun fridcountry who have be to gun violence, we need to put them first, not the nra. And perhaps in a bipartisan way, what exactly would tackling this issue mean . Would it mean in terms of age restrictions, access to certain guns, the banning of certain weapons, what is most realistic and within grasp in your view . Well, in my view, i think that and we know for a fact that background checks, legislation for background checks, has bipartisan support. The assault weapons ban, im sure we can build support for that. We had an assault weapons ban until several years ago. We need to have to close loopholes in terms of gun show sales for ammunition and firearms. There are many measures that we need to move forward on, but i have to tell you, enough is enough. This is this epidemic of gun violence is being normalized now in the united states. Were the most developed country in the world, yet we have more deaths to gun violence than any country. And i have to tell you, fredricka, this is a wakeup call again and President Trump needs to, you know, come forward and say that he supports gun safety measures, and send a signal to his people in Congress Starting with speaker ryan that the nra should not control the agenda that is destroying so many lives of our children throughout the united states. Congresswoman, the white house is pointing out that the suspect did pass a background check before obtaining his weapon. Heres what Deputy Press Secretary raj shaw said. In this instance, you know, this individual did obtain the weapon through a legal background check. You know, we dont know all the circumstances surrounding it, but obviously he shouldnt have had that weapon and shouldnt have been able to do the kinds of things that he did. You know, with that being said, there is a whole host of issues surrounding this matter from Mental Health to School Safety, and a range of other things well be looking at. Are those comments a potential starting point in all of this . First, let me just say, when you look at the budget, they cut Mental Health programs up over a billion dollars, cut School Safety programs 36 , im a psychiatric social worker by profession, certainly i understand Mental Health issues, but this issue has to do with access to guns, access to assault weapons, access to weapons of war that are killing people in our country. So the white house needs to stop it, they need to come forward and look at this in a way that makes sense that will help stop this carnage that is taking place throughout the country. And they need to really, again, let speaker rhino that the nra should not be controlling the agenda that is killing so many people in america. Congresswoman barbara lee, thanks so much for your time, appreciate it. Thank you. Coming up, two major developments in the russia investigation. Proud partner of team usa. Welcome back. Two major new developments in the russia investigation this morning. The first a cnn exclusive, former trump staffer rick gates is said to be close to finalizing a predeal with the special counsel. But a official says theyre not worried about what he could say about President Trump. Plus, muellers team questioning former white house chief strategist steve bannon for two days this week. Lets go to cnn Political Correspondent sara murray with more on this. So, first, lets talk about gates, whats going on with the plea deal . Reporter this is former Trump Campaign adviser rick gates, he appears to be finalizing a plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller. Hes been in to speak with muellers team and, you know, plenty of Trump Associates have been, this is a little bit of a different situation because he went in for what is known as a queen for a day interview, which is basically where you put your cards on the table, say this is what i know about this case or any other criminal activity i may have witnessed, the prosecutors decide what value is this, is this information accurate based on what we know, and he sort of decides whether youre going to cut a deal. So it does appear hes poised to cooperate. Now, if you are Paul Manafort, who is the codefendant in this criminal case, that could be a little bit troubling, a little bit concerning for you. Both of these men pleaded not guilty to these charges. It could also put some more pressure on Paul Manafort to cooperate with Robert Mueller. And that is one of the keys to this. This isnt just about what rick gates that to do with Paul Manafort, but the question is what does this have to do with the president. And the answer is a little bit murkier. Gates cooperation could be a Building Block for Robert Mueller to begin to build a case against President Trump or against other Trump Associates. Thats what were going to be looking for. Thats why the white house is downplaying things, they say theyre not worried about a potential plea deal, they dont believe that mueller is interested in anything to do with a campaign or the transition when it comes to gates and manafort. They think this all has to do with their business dealings before they were ever involved in the campaign. And then what about steve bannon apparently very cooperative with muellers team . Right, talk about striking different tones. Steve bannon went in to speak with the special counsel, spent two days there, grilled for hours, were told there are no subjects that were off limits and he was expected to be asked about the firing of former fbi director james comey, as well as the firing of National Security adviser michael flynn. A very different tone and approach in this special counsel interview than what lawmakers got from steve bannon when he went in front of the House Intelligence Committee on thursday. He refused to answer questions that had to do with his time in the white house, his time in the transition. He said the white house told him to invoke executive privilege. And as you can imagine, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle were not happy about that one. Some even talking about exploring contempt. Well see if that happens. Sara murray, thank you so much. Let me bring in paul callan, okay so lets talk about gates first. Potential plea deal. How significant is that . I think hes more of a side figure than a central figure in a potential case against the president. Remember, he was indicted along with Paul Manafort, who was a Campaign Manager for a while, but farther back in the Trump Campaign, they were both indicted for 12 counts, mostly focusing on money laundering, and failure to register as foreign agents of another country, so my bet is that his information is more relevant, maybe to the case against manafort as opposed to the case against the president. But, of course, only time will tell. All Building Blocks. This queen for a day what is that all about . This is morbid prosecutorial humor. Lets say you have a criminal client and want to go to the prosecutor and make a deal. You say to the prosecutor, hes got great information, you can use it in your investigation, but you have to offer me a deal. The prosecutor then says, ill let him come in, and talk to me, and tell everything, however, i wont use it against him if we dont take the deal. It is based on and the queen for a day reference is based on a show from the 1950s, where believe it or not, the show worked this way, the women contestants competed to be queen for a day. And whoever told the most tragic story, based on audience applause, would be crowned queen for a day. They actually would put a robe on her and crown and they would get a washing machine or dishwasher for her home. That was the kequeen for a day show. If youre going to share everything, and you dont take, you know, the plea, it would seem thats going to be used against you. Okay. So queen for a day. Lets talk about bannon then. Hes cooperative with mueller, but then apparently before the house intel committee, he invoked executive privilege. Wouldnt answer questions or at least gave a lot of noes. How can you have the two or is this an issue of, you know, youre safe with revealing as much as you can with mueller but not necessarily with the house . First, of course, bannon is a central figure unlike gates who i say is sort of an early player. Hes right in the middle of everything. We know if wolfs book can be believed, that hes a man of strong opinions and some of them werent too favorable to the president. We also know that the president is worried about what bannon is likely to say because hes asking him to invoke executive privilege. Only for the house. Well that doesnt work for mueller. It doesnt. Im sure the president would love him to exert executive privilege with mueller as well. This is the jackpot witness for mueller, if there say jackpot to be found in the end. Because he has Information Inside Information about why comey was fired, what the president s attitude was about flynn, all of these things, obstruction of justice that are important key aspects of the mueller investigation. In addition to those expressed opinions that were in the book. Yes. Paul callan, good to see you. Thank you so much, appreciate it. A new report in the new yorker has stunning new details from a former playmate who claims she had an affair with donald trump before he was president. And it also details the alleged Great Lengths to hide the story. Cnns tom foreman joins me now, so, tom what have you heard . This is a pretty elaborate story here about karen mcdougal, former playmate of the year. Essentially what the new yorker is saying from its reporting is that in june 2006, the apprentice was taping an episode at playboy mansion out in los angeles. There was a Party Related to it. At this party, donald trump, according to this report, met karen mcdougal. He at the time had been married to melania for two years. And that they then began a ninemonth affair. What is interesting about this is that apparently mcdougal, according to this report, wrote at some point an eightpage account of what had happened, when she gave to a friend, a handwritten account, which she allegedly has verified to the new yorker saying i did write that account. It gets a lot more complicated because the story also talks a great deal about the degree to which her meetings with donald trump, while frequent, according to this report, were also kept hidden in many ways. They were arranged in such a way it was always deniable, never a paper trail to show, you know, that travel had been booked for her, that sort of thing. Beyond that, at some point, right before the election, the company that owns the national inquirer, according to this report, made a deal with her, to buy her story. But then did not publish the story. The suggestion here being that the publisher, the ceo of the company that owns the national enquirer, is a friend of Donald Trumps who didnt want this story going out, so he bought the rights to it so nobody could tell it, including karen mcdougal. Thats the nut shell of what were talking about here. It has a lot of winks to other possible involvement between donald trump and other women, none of it is proven, and according to this account, the white house denies it, i would not expect anything else, but were digging to try to find out if there is any kernel of truth in any of this and what is true and what may not be. Right. The white house statement is that the president denies it. All right. Thats the way it is stated. Tom foreman, thank you very much. Appreciate it. Well be right back. And for us the expert in gas and electric is pg e. We run about 2,500 2,800 fire calls a year and on almost every one of those calls pg e is responding to that call as well. And so when we show up to a fire and pg e shows up with us it makes a tremendous team during a moment of crisis. I rely on them, the firefighters in this department rely on them, and so we have to practice safety everyday. Utilizing pg es talent and expertise in that area trains our firefighters on the gas or electric aspect of a fire and when we have an emergency situation we are going to be much more skilled and prepared to mitigate that emergency for all concerned. The things we do every single day that puts ourselves in harms way, and to have a partner that is so skilled at what they do is indispensable, and i couldnt ask for a better partner. The School Shooting in south florida has renewed calls for the president and congress to take some kind of action on gun control. From the pleas of students and the parents to the cover of the new york post, and the monologue from jimmy kimmel. He had this message for President Trump. Youve literally done nothing. Youve done worse than nothing. You like to say this is a Mental Health issue, but one of your first acts as president , mr. Trump, was to actually roll back the regulations that were designed to keep firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill. You did that. Your party voted to repeal the mandates on coverage for Mental Health. Joining me right now, cnn politics editor at large, christa lizza and kaitlyn huey burns from real politics. Kaitlyn, over and over gettysburg we have these debates over gun control, shootings, regulations, et cetera. But is this the moment the parties will come together, perhaps fewer will be, i guess, less less adhering to the nra. We dont see any evidence of that happening. And when you compare this shooting to the one in las vegas, after the Las Vegas Shooting there was a real rally around the possibility of banning bump stocks because that was kind of the issue that came out of that. We dont really have anything similar on this. And in the issue of gun control debates, the key is momentum, right . The momentum tempered away after the Las Vegas Shooting. There hasnt even really been much around this shooting. The only thing that i possibly see different here is that youre hearing a lot from the students in this case. Remember, these are High School Students who are very vocal. And so my question is whether the Democratic Party makes a real push for this in the midterm elections. Remember, politics is going to be a real key here. There is really no appetite among Republican Base voters for any forms of gun control. Weve seen that over the past few years. And also remember, there are a lot of red state democrats up for reelection who also dont really have an appetite to go at this issue at this moment. Chris, do you see that this will impact midterm elections . No. And i dont want to be that cynical person, but i just they vary. There have been so few examples despite the number of School Shootings, workplace shootings, mass casualty events that weve seen, theres been so few races decided or even really heavily influenced by ads or messaging on guns. The one i can remember is when adkins switched from the republican to the Democratic Party and he wanted the legislative ban. Other than that, there is just not a lot of evidence there. It is something, i think, that causes significant outrage. I think everyone wonders why we cant do more, especially when you look at polling that suggests things like expanded background checks. There is i dont want to say anonymity, but there are 60, 70 that want this. You have some lined up after the next shooting and the next one and the next one in their partisan camps. They view it as a necessity and no middle ground, unfortunately. And kaitlyn, why should anyone feel more hopeful when just this week there was no movement, if any at all, on daca, on dreamers. There was great hope that there might be, and now this is in the forefront. And this is very emotional as well. This hits home for so many. Sure. Why should there be new hope in this . You bring up a great point, that all other legislation really struggles to get even 60 votes in the senate. Look at the government funding debate over the past few weeks. That was a real struggle to pass something that is fundamental for lawmakers on capitol hill. I covered the post newtown shooting and the efforts on capitol hill to get something done. After each one of these shootings, there is this palpable sense of grief on capitol hill, but really soon the political realities set in, and i think theyre very engrained at this point that were kind of moving away from the debate of what will happen next to just kind of the idea that nothing really will happen on this. So it depends on whether this does become an issue for voters and kind of how organized the efforts are. And chris, you have said, you know, that this week for the president , your words have been absolutely disastrous. I dont know if you heard my interview earlier with the vice mayor of brown county who says he thinks its hypocritical for the president to even step foot near parkland, especially now. And because of the rollbacks that you just mentioned. So is it about to get worse for the president . I dont see how it gets a lot better. You know, i thought the speech he gave yesterday was pretty good, president ial appropriate. But he had tweeted earlier that day something i thought was not something particularly president ial. He has the russia investigation ongoing and closing in on his inner circle. You have, for a variety of controversies regarding the head of the Veterans Administration and the head of the Environmental Protection agency, you had in florida you had democrats win another seat in the state legislature that he had carried. So there is just a lot of bad out there for him, and candidly, and i think his response to the parkland shooting is an example of this, he makes it worse for himself. Well leave it there, chris. With his tweeting, he makes it worse. I gotcha. Chris, kaitlyn, thanks so much to both of you. Appreciate it. Coming up, 150 shots fired, 70 people kill 17 People Killed in a Florida School massacre.
