Im getting beat. I know youre 94 years old but how old do you feel . The fountain of youth must be somewhere in italy. Why . Because italians are the healthiest people in the world. A new worldwide study credits low obesity, access to doctors, and the mediterranean diet. But theres clearly more going on here. They eat. Mmm, good. They indulge. Its the most delicious thing youve ever tasted. They have passion. As a doctor, those arent things i usually prescribe. But i wonder, could italys secrets be boiled down to something so beautifully simple as love . I want the same thing you do, the secret to living longer, healthier, and happier. But where do we find it . Im chasing life. Ive come to a place, a magical place, where some of the people here live the longest, healthiest lives in the world. Surrounded by the sparkling blue waters of the mediterranean, the island of sardinia feels like a world unto itself. Im here to meet the locals, and theres one obvious place to start. Ive been around the block before [ speaking Foreign Language ] adolfo molis is 94 years old and opens his shop at 6 00 a. M. Every morning, a routine hes had for the last six decades. Are you ever planning on retiring . How is your Health Overall . Pretty strong. Adolfo has challenged me to a game of pool, and weve got an audience his brothers, vitalio, who is 91 years old, and antonino, whos 98. Im feeling a lot of pressure. Theres almost 300 years of melos brothers against 47yearold gupta. Adolfo has eight siblings, and while some of them have passed, when you do the math, there is 864 years between them. Adolfo, i know youre 94 years old, but how old do you feel . 50 . Were the same age. Your hands are so steady. Can i see your hands for a second . No shake at all, huh . Thats very impressive. And if you squeeze my fingers here as hard as you can. Strong. Okay. I need those. In the united states, most of us retire at 62. But adolfo and his brothers are showing no sign of slowing down. So whats up with these sardinians . Is it good genes, or is there Something Else going on here . I have meet people driving the car at the age of 95, but this is normal here. Reporter dr. Gianni pez has spent 20 years studying longevity in this place and has some ideas about what makes these sardinians tick. When you look out here, what do you see . You are in the only place in sardinia where you can pass from the sea level to 1,800 meters in relatively few distance. People in this area usually do more physical activity than the rest of sardinian population. In the past, they were mostly farmers or shepherds. They did 20 kilometers walking every day, so a lot of physical activity and open air. Wherever you find the longest lived people in the world, you typically see mountains like these. Daily climbs are just their way of life. But far from the only benefit of living here. The community is strong and gives support to old people. There are no Nursing Homes in this village, and there are people stay in the family until they hand over their existence. Family here is very important. Community is something that i think is missing in many parts of the developed world, but you just dont see it as much. In arzana, people are connected to their heritage, to the land, and mostly to each other. This is what gianni calls a blue zone where more people are living to 100 than the rest of the general population. And after scouring village records and town halls like this one, gianni discovered something he didnt expect, and its part of a public exhibit here. The gender ratio at age 100 is one to one. We have a couple here, the man and the woman arrived at the age of 100. Unlike the rest of the world where women typically outlive men, here men are sticking around just as long. What impact does marriage have on longevity . The marriage is important because what we have discovered is that women who did not remarry after widowed live longer than the average women. But for men, a second marriage is associated with a longer survival. So how do i describe this to my wife . For women its better to not be married. For men its better to be married at least a couple of times. Definitely, definitely. This is good advice. Speaking of marriage, my buddy from the pool hall, adolfo, and his wife delia have been married for 47 years, have three kids, and lots of friends, all in their 90s. This is so nice. Do you this every night . On the menu, the prized family recipe, minestrone soup. So let me ask all of you, what do you think the secret is to a long life . What do you think, delia . This is very special. Thank you. Theres a lot of love at this table for each other, for minestrone, and for that quintessential italian drink, vino. Life is good, francesco. Life is good. Francesco is a Second Generation winemaker and his family has worked this land for decades. Can i work here . I would work here. No, seriously. You think im joking. I could drink this wine, cut grapes, and live like this. Why wouldnt i want this . Francescos family produces a wine called canenau, and the very specific conditions here help create something unique. I like that a lot. Its a good philosophy for life, i think. Thats how you do it. These grapes, theyre delicious. Every step of the process. Italians love of wine is practically in their dna. And this sardinian canenau, its a name i will always remember. Its even been shown in recent studies to be particularly good for our health. Youve probably heard that a glass or two of red wine is good for you. But exactly how that works and why that works is entirely dependent on this microscopic battle that is continuously going on inside our bodies. You see, were exposed to things, pollutants in the air, pesticides in the radicals, which are these unstable molecules that can overwhelm our bodies and cause all sorts of disease. Now, the best way to fight that is to eat Natural Foods with antioxidants. Of all the red wines, canenau has the highest level of polythee nals and an though sigh nins, antioxidants linked to better heart health. Here in sardinia, they drink in moderation, about a half a glass at lunch, a glass at dinner, but its a pretty enjoyable way to try and fight disease. I have three kids, and i think im always wondering how best to teach them how best to keep family traditions. How about you with your kids . It seems every day in sardinia ends with a big dinner. But in italy, gathering at the table to break bread is more common than not. Its hard to believe, but nearly 70 of adults under 35 still live with their parents. Its a pretty good size family. Does everyone get along all the time . I agree. I agree. Ive been traveling all over the world trying to figure out what is the secret to a long life. So im asking everybody, what do you think is the secret to a long life . I like it. Cheers. I could toast to that. Youre not going to find cheeses like this anywhere else in the world. Ive arrived in the small town of bra, a food lovers paradise in the piedmont region of northern italy. Hundreds of thousands of people have showed up for a highly anticipated event, a Food Festival dedicated to a classic italian favorite, raw cheese. Very spicy. Yes, yes, very spicy. Why motherinlaw . Because the motherinlaw sometimes needed a punishment. A place like this is perfect for me because im a grazer. I dont like to eat too much at any given time, but when i do eat, i like to have real food. And you can find plenty of that around here. I seriously had no idea there were so many types of cheese. Wow, thats really good. Thank you. Cheese seems to be the perfect example of how different our food is from the italians. This is raw, unpasteurized, small batch and organic. Its about as far as you can get from those individually wrapped yellow squares we call cheese back home. In the u. S. , were stuck with a highly regulated corporate machine that, yes, is making our food faster and cheaper, but at what cost . You are what you eat. Youve heard that before. But what does it really mean when youre eating things like high fructose corn syrup. Americans on average get more than 60 of their calories from ultra processed foods, sugar, salt, saturated fat, as well as i bunch of chemicals and compounds you cant even pronounce. Theres long been a resistance here to mass produced fast food, and it came to a head in the late 80s when mcdonalds set up shop near romes spanish steps. Led but a young food writer named carla petrini, italians vigorously protested and carlo began his lifelong task to preserve. Carlo railed against fast food and created his own philosophy for healthy eating, slow food. How do you define slow food . What does it really mean . We evolved to make food more widely available. I mean thats why we process it. Thats why we distribute it the way we distribute it. Isnt there some advantage to that . No. No . No, no. What youre talking about obviously makes sense. My parents started making this cheese when i was 2 years old, and ive eaten it since i can remember. Two hours south of bra, Jerome Fister is giving me a tour of his family farm. His way of making raw cheese from these hills embraces simplicity. So this is all part of organic goat farming . Definitely. I mean this field, for instance, there is wild thyme, chestnuts, hazelnuts, hay, flowers. They get to get pretty much all that can grow in nature without us touching it. Theres no chemicals. Theres nothing else added. Nothing else added. What they eat is the milk they produce. Pretty much the only processing that goes on here is done by the goats, turning these plants into milk. Its the ultimate slow food. Thank you, jerome. All right. They look a little nervous, jerome. Should i let them get to know me a little bit or buy them dinner first. You go to them. They will think youre like a vet, and they dont really like that. They dont like the vet. Nobody likes doctors. All right. Is there any trick to it . This is on the list of things ive ever done. Hes going to kick me . Okay. The main movement is to close on the top and squeeze the bottom. Got it. Sorry, buddy. I mean aside from the flies and some hair, this milk is healthy otherwise. Yes, definitely. It will get filtered after and everything. Chances are the last piece of cheese you ate was not made so simply. Back home, what we eat is more processed. Our milk is pasteurized, basically boiled to eliminate all bacteria. Its supposed to prevent us from getting sick, but its also killing one of the very things that could be making italians so healthy. Inside all of our guts is a whole community of bacteria. Its called the micro biome. Best estimates are that we have up to five pounds of living, breathing organisms inside there. Just like a fingerprint, each of us has our own unique microbiome, and the health of all that gut bacteria is associated with your mood, metabolism, and how prone you are to obesity. Now, the trick to all this is eating the right foods. Processed foods are going to kill some of those good bacteria, make you feel unwell. But eating foods that are more alive, like raw cheese, are not only going to help you digestion, but also help the rest of your health. And now the moment ive been waiting for. Jeromes robiolo he. Its made with just three ingredients, raw milk, natural enzymes, and salt. And aged for just three weeks. Jerome, its times like this that i wish you could smell on television. This is the cheese at my favorite aging. I got to taste it. All right. Lets do it. Ill cut two pieces so ill have one too. Thats good. That has a lot going on there. I feel like i can taste a lot of Different Things that you were talking about from the land. You can taste the flowers, the grass, you goat. You wont get that very much with pasteurized cheese. Like so much of what ive seen here in italy, the fewer steps between our food and where it comes from, the better it tastes and the healthier it is. Ill admit those are some sweeping, romantic ideas, even for italy, where there are also some hard truths. Poverty has tripled in just the last ten years, and 35 of the young workforce are jobless. But thats nothing new for italians, who have a long history of surviving in tough times. I can eat this . Its okay. Its possible. Its good. I wouldnt have known. Thank you. Im in the region of umbria in central italy to meet one very resilient chef. Salvato salvatore dinaro hasnt had a steady is job in years but hes found a distinctly italian way to put food on the table. Hes a forager who finds his food in pretty much the last place id ever look. Salvatore, were in the middle of a neighborhood here. Right outside your door. This type of foraging is an italian tradition. Cucina povara, which literally means poor kitchen, and it stems from a deep connection to the land. And when money is tight, making the most of what the land has to offer. So for you, its much more affordable to eat this way. The big leaves good for the soup. Youre making me hungry. Smells so fresh. It tastes like cucumbers. Swiss chard. Put it in the basket. Eating food off the ground. I love it. Its good for my life. I dont think im going to be able to walk through an area like this ever the same again. Im going to always look to see whats underneath my feet. Were headed to salvatores outdoor kitchen, where he wants to share one of his favorite dishes. Borge soup. It smells good. An italian drop. Five ingredients, minutes to cook, and essentially free. Com no trip to italy would be complete without a visit to the eternal city, rome. You can feel the ancient history and the modernday vibrancy all at once. Theres also the inescapable realities of city life. Italians are facing the invasion of a supersized on the go culture and all the problems that come with it. Romans are fighting back by embracing a love of culinary traditions for a better future. So im going to where the future lives, one of romes public elementary schools. Heres something ive never seen in an american school. In order to simply have lunch with these kids, ive got to put on a gown because theyre serious here in italy not just about the food, but about the hygiene as well. Despite italian adults having one of the lowest rates of obesity in europe, recent studies have shown children here have one of the highest. One in three are overweight or obese. Romes Public School system is taking radical action to try and turn that trend around. What are we having for lunch . Vittoria is 7 and her older brother luca is 8. They used to live in the states and are pretty close in age to my two youngest, but ive never seen a school lunch that comes close to this. Silverware, real dishes, even table service. When you come to school like this, do you get food like this every day . Because it takes a while to cook and stuff. Were used to it. How does this compare to School Lunches in america . I like food better here than america. Thats unbelievable. This just keeps Getting Better and better. Paolo is a nutritionist and shes working with romes youth to confront italys Childhood Obesity problem headon. I have three children, and they go to school in the states. And theres a different feel to it. You do have processed foods, frozen foods. Is that the big difference here in italy . Kids just dont eat that sort of food in school paola is worried that Childhood Obesity could lead to heart disease, yet traditional italian cooking continues to disappear. Do you think that these School Lunches are making a difference when it comes to obesi obesity . Beautiful, isnt it . Just waitll you get to the register. Introducing new lower prices on produce. But thats not the whole story. More than 70 of italians consider themselves catholic, and in their faith, theres a tradition of healing thats about as different from any that i practice. Dino is 87 years old. Hes retired from his career in civil service, but his faith as inspired a new passion. Cooking for romes hungry. This is some of the best food ive ever had. There is Something Special about the food dino and his disciples have made here. Its ridiculous to think this food would be tossed in the trash. But even here in italy where food is revered, there is waste. Each year, 5 million tons of food is thrown away. While that number may seem huge, it pales in comparison to the united states. Its amazing when you think about how much food goes to waste. Recently italy has taken strides to reduce their food waste. They now reward businesses that donate with a tax break. Its a benefit dino believes its a step in the right direction. Even still, his work has become far more urgent. Hundreds of thousands of refugees from northern africa, romania, syria, have flooded into italy. New comers who arent always welcomed with open arms. Dino may have started this on his own, but his sense of generosity has inspired 300 volunteers to join him. Hes created one big family, especially for those without one. When you are hungry, you are a bit stressed. But when you have good food in your body, you will always feel happy. Were doing our best to cook good food for them. He is 31 years old and one of the newest members of dinos family. After escaping a bad situation in pakistan, he went to austria only to be deported and sent to italy. He volunteers several times a week in dinos kitchen. And ive met him outside the train station to help hand out food. Before i was in much stress. Now im very good. My health is Getting Better. And i met new friends. You said that these last couple months have been the best of your life. Oh, yeah. Thats something. Yes, because i found a family. He welcomed us like we are his son. In other countries its not that open. The society is not that open. You cannot interact with people. Here i can interact with people open, with open heart. Each week, dino and his family of volunteers feed nearly a thousand people in need real food. Its beautiful, generous, but theres something bigger going on here, something i believe sums up italy in a single word. Connection. Not digital, but something personal, powerful, and present. Weve evolved as humans to be social creatures. And yet most of us are doing less and less of it in real life. The good news is we can make small changes that yield huge benefits to our health, cook real food, slow down, enjoy meaningful conversation, and if you have it, your spiritual side. Theres power in connection, and we should embrace it any chance we get. [ fireworks ] anthony this is the story of one man, one chef, and a city.
