Thank you so much for joining me this saturday. Im fredericka witfield. We begin with the historic autoworkers strike, now in its second full day. Negotiators for the carmakers and the union are expected to be back at the Bargaining Table Today. For the first time ever, workers are striking at plants for General Motors, ford and stellantis at the same time. The carmakers say despite big profits in recent years, the raises being demanded would drive them out of business. President biden weighing in, saying now is the time for the companies to step up. No one wants a strike. Say it again. No one wants a strike. But i respect workers rights to use their options under the collective bargaining system. I believe they should go further to ensure record corporate profits mean record contracts. Gabe cohen is at a Stellantis Plant in ohio where workers there are striking. Any signs of hope that these negotiators, when they meet today, might have good news for the strikers . Reporter were waiting on any word of progress today at the bargaining table. We know the Autoworkers Union said yesterday they had sent counter offers to each of those big three automakers. They were waiting on a response. We also learned yesterday how wide the divide has been between the two sides, with the head of the union saying that up to this point, 80 of their members demands have not been met by the automakers in any of their offers at this point. Up until a deal is met, were going to be seeing picket lines like this one 24 hours a day. Were outside this Stellantis Factory where they build more than a thousand jeeps per day, but these workers have shut down this facility. About a half mile down this stretch, youll see groups like the one behind me outside rallying. The energy level is so high on this second day of the strike. We know that 13,000 workers are now on strike. Theyre making A Hundred Dollars a day in strike pay. So many were preparing to strike as long as it takes. This is michael wade. You said youve been working here for six years. You brought your kids to be part of this. Why . I want them to stand up for what they deserve. We deserve it. Its a long time coming. Reporter you work late nights, past 3 00 a. M. Most of the time. What have working conditions been like for you in this job thats brought you to the picket line . The Work Experience has actually been great for the six years ive been working here. But working next to somebody who is a parttimer, youre making 10 less than me or 15 less than me, and were doing the same job. I dont think thats fair. We all need to be on an equal path and not just be parttime for years. Reporter thousands of workers like yourself are making A Hundred Dollars a day in strike pay. Youre raising three kids. How long do you think you can sustain that . Ill be honest, i didnt prepare too much, because i didnt think it was going to happen. But thats me. Im new to the game. Were going to make it happen. Its going to be kind of rough. 500 is not a lot, car note, insurance, raeent, yeah. Reporter both sides are at the Bargaining Table Today. What would be your message to your Union Leaders at that Bargaining Table Today . Just keep fighting for whats right. Keep fighting for what we deserve. Just dont back down and settle for less, because they have it. They can give it to us. We deserve it. Reporter thank you so much. Good luck out here. Thank you. Reporter again, fred, you hear the honking, Cars Flying B by, so much support. Weve seen Police Officers and firefighters coming by revving their engines flashing lights. You can tell they support these workers. Its day two. Well see if theres any progress in the coming hours. During that entire interview, she kept holding that sign and waving it as a striking worker. Gabe cohen in toledo, thank you so much. Any moment now texas State Senators will start voting on the political fate of Attorney General ken paxton. He faces 16 articles of impeachment, most of them stemming for allegations that he abused his office to help a friend and donor. Its the latest in a string of controversies that have followed paxton since he was elected back in 2014. Ed lavandera joining us from austin. Have all the senators arrived to get the Voting Process under way . Reporter well, theres some sort of delay. We dont know what the delay is about. A vote was supposed to have started at 10 30 this morning central time. They announced its been delayed to 11 10 central time. There have been a number of senators coming and going. We have still not seen ken paxton here this morning. He did not attend much of the impeachment trial. He showed up at the beginning and yesterday during Closing Arguments. We have not seen him. We have not seen the Lieutenant Governor who presides over the senate and has essentially served as the judge during this impeachment trial. This will begin the Voting Process. It will be a lengthy process. There are 16 articles of impeachment that these senators have heard testimony on. That is what the vote will take place on. Each of these articles of impeachment will be voted on individually and each senators vote will be announced individually. If he is convicted on just one of the articles of impeachment, ken paxton, who is currently suspended from working as the Attorney General in texas, would be removed from office. There are 16 articles. He was charged with 20 articles of impeachment by the house, but only 16 of those have been heard in this trial. Four of them have been set aside for now. Essentially what Ken Paxton Needs, he needs ten republican senators to vote to acquit him for him to remain in office. There are 31 senators, only 30 of them are voting because the 31st is Angela Paxton, ken paxtons wife, and by the rules of the impeachment process, she is not allowed to vote. Everyone is parsing the numbers. You need nine republicans to join 12 democrats to reach 21, the number that it would take to remove ken paxton from office. That is why Ken Paxton Needs ten votes to survive this impeachment vote. There will be 16 different votes. If he is convicted on any article of impeachment, there would be a vote at the end to determine whether or not ken paxton can be barred from holding future office. There is a scenario here where ken paxton could be removed from office, but not barred from Holding Office in the future. Theoretically, perhaps you could see him run again. Getting a little bit too far ahead of myself there, but lets see how these votes on the first 16 articles of impeachment go. Sure. Youre laying out what the process is all about. Ed, you mentioned that while the Attorney General hasnt been seen, does he need to be present in order for the voting to get under way . Reporter not exactly 100 clear on that. Maybe thats perhaps part of the deal. He did not have to be present for much of the testimony. His attorneys had him there for the beginning and the Opening Statements made in this trial. Once testimony started, ken paxton was not seen again in the chamber until friday morning when Closing Arguments were made. We have seen his wife senator Angela Paxton inside the chamber this morning. She was talking to various aides and senators there on the floor. As i mentioned, we have not seen paxton. I dont know if that is part of the delay or what the question might be. Its been a little bit difficult to get clear answers as to what this delay is about right now. Were trying to run leads on that right now. I see activity behind you. We also have a live picture inside the chamber, where it appears as though a number of senators have walked into the room. I dont know what kind of indicator that will be for what we know to be a delay. I understand they are doing a prayer right now. Perhaps things will soon get under way. Ed, were going to let you continue to do your thing and your additional reporting and check back with you. As things develop, well be calling upon you again. Ed lavandera in austin, thank you. Were also following the latest on lee, the powerful storm nearing the new england and canadian coasts. Hours ago lee weakened from a category 1 hurricane to a postTropical Cyclone. Its still posing serious threats, including Hurricane Force winds and heavy rain. Derrick van dam is live in harwich, massachusetts, on cape cod. Reporter i think that we got really lucky with this particular storm. Just talking to some of the local residents here, they have to agree, because we know these hurricanes are a game of miles. If this thing was west by 50 miles, we would have significantly worse impacts here on cape cod and the barnstable county, where i am located on the shores of massachusetts. The same cannot be said for whats taking place now in the state of maine, where the bulk of this most intense part of post Tropical Cyclone lee is located. I just looked. Seeing those numbers for Power Outages tick up and up and up. Theyre currently at 80,000 customers without power. Just a few hours ago, that was about 40,000. That kind of spells out whats been happening there. Just analyzing this latest satellite imagery, you see all those shades of red in maine. That is the stronger part of what was hurricane lee. That is why were seeing the bulk of the Power Outages in down east maine. Theyre getting the brunt of the storm. That looks like it will Come Ashore In Western Nova Scotia or New Brunswick in the coming hours. It will be a weakening low pressure system. The thing we have been trying to hammer home for the past few days is that the wind field is just so large. Tropical Storm Force Winds extend 400 miles. That is why where im standing on cape cod in massachusetts, we are still feeling the impacts, experiencing Tropical Storm force gusts. Were actually pushing our tide right now. So were approaching a high tide which will occur later this afternoon, roughly about 1 00 this afternoon. Thats going to not be so much of a concern, because the bulk of the winds have moved on already. As we move closer toward the center, that combination between strong winds and high tide could cause still some coastal erosion. Heres a look at the winds. Weve had gusts in nantucket at 55 Miles Per Hour with 20foot waves on their shoreline there. We were spared here in cape cod. They treated this like a noreaster. But i think now were looking forward to Better Weather tomorrow. I know they are. Thank you so much. Appreciate it. Donald trump is lashing out at the Special Counsel investigating his alleged 2020 federal election interference case in social media posts and in a Campaign Speech last night. The former president says jack smith is trying to rob him of his First Amendment right to free speech. Smiths office is asking the judge to impose a court order limiting what the former president can say in public about the case against him and the players involved. The Justice Department says the order is needed to protect the integrity of trumps upcoming trial. Cnns Jessica Schneider has details. Reporter the Special Counsels team is really laying out a long list of reasons why they want the judge to step in immediately and order donald trump to stop Making Statements, both online and in person, that could end up intimidating witnesses, Court Officials or even the jury pool. The Special Counsel did reveal on friday that numerous witnesses have faced threats and intimidation because of various statements from donald trump. So now theyre asking the judge Tanya Chutkan to do something about trumps words, saying the defendants repeated inflammatory public statements regarding the district of columbia, the court, prosecutors and potential witnesses are substantially likely to materially prejudice the jury pool, create fear among potential jurors and result in threats of harassment of individuals he singles out. Put simply, those involved in the Criminal Justice process who read and hear the defendants disparaging and inflammatory messages from Court Personnel to prosecutors to witnesses to potential jurors may reasonably fear they could be the next targets of the defendants attacks. Because of that, the Special Counsel wants judge chutkan to issue an order restricting trump from making certain comments. The Special Counsel, theyve really laid out a number of social media posts and comments from trump over recent weeks that have targeted not only the Special Counsel jack smith, but also former Vice President mike pence and even a prosecutor on jack smiths team. Now judge chutkan has to make that determination. She already ordered trump to refrain from disparaging comments. That was during his arraignment. Now the Special Counsel wants the judge to issue this official order in writing prohibiting trump from naming witnesses, Making Statements about them or really making any statements about anyone, including attorneys and maybe even potential jurors that are disparaging or intimidating. This is significant. Its a significant request from the Special Counsel because even though the judge warned trump once, this is asking the judge to make this Order Ironclad against trump and there could be repercussions if he violates this order. With me now to talk more about this is shan wu a former prosecutor and a defense attorney. So thats an interesting point jessica made. The warning has already come verbally. So if chutkan decides to put it in writing, how different would such a gag order or warning be . Its an Important Foundation the prosecution has been laying. They have been alert to this from the beginning, of course, given trumps pattern of behavior. If she adopts this and basically gives them sort of a more formal writing, putting it in writing what the conditions are, then when we violates it, its going to be a question of what sanctions is she going to impose. With a regular defendant, you might expect contempt, even obstruction, tampering, maybe facing being held. Of course, there could also be financial sanctions, which might be a little bit easier to manage than trying to actually hold him in jail temporarily. That foundation is being set here. There are difficulties with the First Amendment argument and how to prove that hes violating it. Her wording is going to have to be very, very clear and careful. How long might she take before she would actually construct, if she does take up the suggestion by jack smith to do so, how long would she take before she actually were to construct a warning . I dont think it would take her very long to do that. The arguments are pretty clear on both sides. Its more of a factual question in some ways than legal, because trump has taken this position of making his Legal Defense and his political arguments one and the same. Theyre indistinguishable at this point. Thats why hes able to argue this is all a First Amendment issue. Its not too hard for her to verbally make a distinction, which is you can proclaim innocence all you want, but you cant involve individual peopl. Whether its by name or not doesnt matter. That should be the line for her to draw. The line is not that tough to draw. Whether he can adhere to it is a big question. Who would enforce it . The prosecution would bring to the courts attention theres been a further violation. Then the court would be the one to enforce it in terms of the conditions. Now, the prosecution could have the option of adding additional charges wfor witness intimidatin or tampering. This isnt the only court that has tried to or would try to limit what trump says about the case. One of the very Clear Conditions of trumps release on bond in georgia specifically says trump must perform no act to intimidate any codefendant or witness in the case or to otherwise obstruct the administration of justice. Additionally, he must make no direct or indirect threat of any nature against any codefendant witnesses. Trump signed that document. In that case, what would be the ramifications or punishments if he were to violate that agreement . That would be the same menu of options, tough options for the judge. You could have some type of sanctions. You could change the Release Conditions for him. And the prosecution could add to the charges. Again, this is a matter of interpretation. When you say intimidate or harass, he will argue the fact that he is proclaiming the entire case to be rigged against him doesnt constitute intimidation or harassment, even though it may have that effect. If he were to go after individuals, hes going to cross that line pretty easily. In that georgia case, a judge decided two of the 19 defendants in that case can be tried next month, their cases being severed from the bulk of the codefendants or alleged coupon s coconspirators. How might this upcoming trial, which is really a matter of weeks away, impact potentially the cases against trump and other defendants, alleged coconspirators, et cetera . Its a chance for both sides to do a dry run here before they get to the really big fish. Generally Something Like this is better for the defense, because they get to preview the governments case. They get to see how well it plays to the jury, what sorts of Legal Defenses get more traction. So its an advantage for the defense to get it played out, not to mention for the later defendants delay is always a helpful thing when youre defending the case. Shan wu, great to see you. Six members of the religious Group Soldiers of christ have been arrested in georgia in connection to the death of a south korean woman. Police say the 20 to 30yearold woman was found in the trunk of a car outside a south korean spa in duluth, georgia. She had been beaten and starved. Raphael romo joining me with more on this. I mean, this is such a horrific crime. Horrific indeed. Some of the details, fred, that have surfaced are not only shocking, but also gruesome and disturbing. Police say that at the moment of death, the victim weighed only 70 pounds. Her body was found in the trunk of a car parked at a strip mall in duluth, georgia, about 25 miles northeast of atlanta. According to the Gwinnett County police department, they said the medical Examiners Office believes malnourishment could be a contributing factor. Six people, including a minor, have been arrested in connection to the death of the south korean woman, who according to police, was beaten and starved for weeks. Those arrested identify themselves as members of a religious group. Believe the victim was brought from south korea some time in the summer under the guise of what she thought to believe joining a religious organization. They call themselves soldier of christ. After finding the victims body in the cars trunk, police say they conducted a search of a home associated with the vehicle where they believe the woman was kept. Authorities released pictures of the homes basement. They appear to show a storage room with laundry and other supplies neatly arranged on shelves. Police blacked out large areas they say were covered in blood. Five of those arrested rage in age from 22 to 26 and a sixth one is a minor aged 15. They all face charges of felony murder, false imprisonment, tampering with evidence and concealing the death of another. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim because she was an immigrant from south korea, fred, and theyre still trying to notify her family back home. Oh my god. That is horrific. Many survivors waiting days for official government aid. Reporter a week on and there are still Search Operations ongoing, but this is no longer a rescue operation. This has become a recovery operation. We have visited many villages and small towns up in the Atlas Mountains that have been hardest hit by this earthquake. Some of these villages have been almost entirely flattened. Everyone that we have spoken to knows somebody that has died in this earthquake. You can imagine the loss these people are experiencing. Many of them are living in temporary shelters on the outskirts of their impacted towns and villages. We have seen an outpouring of support not only from local moroccan organizations and the government, but also from the international community. Weve seen International Rescue teams coming into the country, humanitarian relief teams operating on the ground. But it has in some areas taken days for these teams to reach those in need. That is because some of the roads leading up to these very remote villages and small towns have been damaged by the earthquake or obstructed by Falling Rocks and boulders which have prevented rescue teams getting to those most in need. We have visited several towns and villages. We are seeing those relief teams on the ground supplying food, water and medical attention to those that were injured. One of the biggest concerns they have is peoples mental health. When we speak to people who have lost their homes, they tell us their key concern is the housing situation. The winter months are coming. These tents are not going to suffice. Negotiations between Hollywood Studios and the Writers Guild are expected to resume next week according to multiple reports. The strike is now almost four months old, and talks Raphael Warnock v broke off in mid august. Drew barrymore announced production would resume without writers, joining several other talk shows that have been airing new episodes. The writers went on strike back in may, demanding better pay and a change to the Compensation Structure as the Industry Moves toward a streaming model and away from traditional broadcasting. The actors guild went on strike two months later over many of the same issues, but they also want an agreement that protects actors against some of the uses of Artificial Intelligence in film and television. Im going to bring in michael jammon, a Television Writer and show runner wh. Good to see you, michael. Are you more optimistic today that perhaps negotiations can get under way and there could be some sort of deal struck . As a professional writer, im trained not to be optimistic about anything. We get our hopes up all the time. I hope we can get a much better offer from the studios, because we all want to get to work. Im in my garage now. I want to be back at work. What are a lot of writers doing right now to make ends meet to pay the bills while theyre on the picket line or at least supporting whats happening . Thats the thing. When i first broke into the business, you could make in the 1990s, you could make a living fulltime as a Comedy Writer working on a show ten months out of the year. Now if youre on a hit show, you might only do eight or ten episodes in a season. Then how do you get by . Sometimes you could scramble and pick up some side work, sell a pilot. Theres a lot of hustle. Back in 2008, when the last strike was, the leverage from the studios was can you guys really afford to be out of work for three months. Now theyve lost that leverage. Were already out of work nine months of the year. You lost that leverage when you turned our job into a parttime profession. I teach courses, i have a book coming out, whatever you can do to hustle. Its been hard for a lot of people, because some people are having to sell their assets because they can no longer make ends meet while this is happening. I do want to play a clip that you posted back in july, if we could. Lets do that. Yeah. Today i am picketing the surface of the sun. I dont know what the sun did to the writers, but apparently something. I dont ask questions. I just show up here. Its 4,000 degrees. So when you were doing that in july, were you a little bit more hopeful that perhaps everyone would have been back to work by now with an agreement in place and that it would be a totally different scenario than what it is now . When the actors joined us on the strike, it definitely helped, because theyre higher profile than writers. It definitely added a little more weight and power to the pause. Was i hopeful . A little, yeah. And then, you know, as we mentioned some shows are getting back on the air next week. The view has been on. They make mention of the fact they have been doing so without their writers. They are handwriting their own material. Drew barrymore, her show is returning to production, but shes been taking a lot of heat for getting back to business even though she says its going to be in compliance with the strike and they wont have writers. Maybe you can explain to us why she is getting so much heat. Why are circumstances different for her, or are they . I dont know if they are. I think everyone is taking heat. I think maybe in drews case, shes such a beloved personality, shes charming, shes endearing, she seems very empathetic. Im not angry. Im just kind of disappointed. The more pressure we can put on the studios to make a deal, the faster this comes to resolution. By putting your show back on, you take that pressure off. So its just disappointing in the sense that, you know, we love her. When your kids do something wrong, youre just disappointed. But when my neighbors do something wrong, im not disappointed, i dont really care because i dont love them. Are you disappointed in the other shows too . I guess everyone from set design, you know, to catering, there are a lot of people involved in getting shows on air. Perhaps shows are saying we want as many people to get back to work as we can even though we know the writers cannot. Is that taken into consideration, or is it an issue of to make the strike strong, everyone has to be on one accord in terms of the actors and Writers Guilds . Part of whats at stake is a. I. If shows in the future and i think this is their goal in the near future is to have shows written and performed inside the computer. If that is the case, all those jobs go away when a show is made inside the computer. This is everyones fight. Its coming. Were just the first to take a stand on it. Thank you so much. Thank you for having me. Well keep tabs with you. Sure, everybody wants some resolution, but youre helping us to kind of get a sense as to what everybody is going through on a day to day basis.
