I feel like at this point it sounds cliche. Didnt believe it when we saw the news. Ted rowlands, well stay in contact with you. Were getting about 60 seconds or so away from the News Conference to begin there in marin county, Northern California where Robin Williams and his family called home. In the meantime, let me tell you who sat down next to me. This is dr. John mann, suicide researcher for columbia psychiatry. Well talk in a moment. If you would, listen in to this with me. Lets go straight to marin county. Investigators. Id like to express the condolences to the Williams Family before we begin. I have a prepared statement and i ask that you hold your questions until the end of the statement. My last name is spelled boyd. On august 11th, 2014, at approximately 11 55 a. M. , marin county investigations received a 911 call reporting that a male adult had been located unconscious and not breathing inside his residence located at 95 st thomas way in tiburon, california. The caller was distraught and indicated at that time it was an apparent suicide due to a hanging had taken place and that rigor mortis had started. We were dispatched to the incident with Emergency Personnel arriving on the scene at 12 00 p. M. The male subject who was announced deceased at 12 02 p. M. Has been identified as Robin Williams. Preliminary information developed during the investigation by Coroner Division personnel has revealed that mr. Williams had been seeking help for depression. He was last seen alive by his wife at approximately 10 30 p. M. , 2014, when she retired for the evening in a room in the home. It is unknown at this time when mr. Williams retired for the evening at a room in his home. At approximately 10 30 a. M. , on august 11th, 2014, mr. Williams wife left the home believing mr. Williams to still be asleep. Mr. Williams personal assistant became concerned at approximately 11 45 a. M. When he failed to respond to knocks on his bedroom door. At that time, the personal assistant was able to gain access to mr. Williams bedroom and entered the bedroom to find mr. Williams clothed in a seated position unresponsive with a belt secured around his neck with the other end of the belt wedged between the clothes closet door and the door frame. His right shoulder area was touching the door with his body perpendicular to the door and slightly suspended. Mr. Williams, at that time, was cool to the touch with rigor mortis present in his body and positioned appropriately for the position he was located in. The inside of mr. Williams left wrist had several acute super cuts. The pocket knife was examined and a dry red dry material was located on the blade of the knife which appeared consistent to dried blood. It is unknown at this time if the material is blood or if it is mr. Williams blood but scientific testing will be done to investigate the value. Mr. Williams was transported to the scene to the morgue by the Coroner Division pending an investigation which was conducted prior to this press conference. The examination conducted by joseph cohen, the chief forensic p pat thhologist did not reveal a struggle. His life ended due to asphyxia due to hanging. Toxicology tests will be conducted to determine if he had any Chemical Substances in his system at the time of his death. Toxicology results will be available excuse me. Will not be available for approximately two to six weeks while the testing is being performed. Please note, this is an active investigation into the cause, manner, and circumstances of mr. Williams death. The work of the Coroners Office is not complete at this time. The final cause and manner of death will not be certified until the conclusion of the investigation which is several weeks away. When the investigation is concluded and our final results are ready for dissemination, a press conference will be scheduled at that time. Additionally, i have received numerous requests for copies of 911 and dispatch recordings as well as investigative reports. Please note, each request will be handled in accordance with Public Record guidelines with responses provided to those who have submitted them within ten days. Media inquiries should be directed to me, lieutenant keith boyd via kboyd marinsheriff. Org. I will respond to these inquiries time forbidding as i receive them. Please keep in mind at this time the Coroners Office is conducting active cases from other residents in the community. That concludes my written statement at this time. And i will open up to take a few questions understanding that this is an active investigation and there is some information that will be withheld until a final press conference in a few weeks. You stated that there was rigor mortis that set in. Does that give you more of a timeline of when this incident may have taken place. Rigor mortis is a sign that will be evaluated in conjunction with the livamortis to determine when the death may have occurred understanding that there is no perfect environment when youre talking about lividity and rigor mortis so we will try to surmise when the death may have occurred. Did he leave a note . Were not discussing the note or a note at this point as the investigation is ongoing and that information will be discussed at a future time at the concluding press conference. Was there any signs in the home of drug or alcohol abuse . The investigation is ongoing. Toxicology testing will be conducted to determine if any Chemical Substances were in mr. Williams system at the time of his death. And at that time well have a determination as to whether there were any signs that he may have been under the influence or incapacitated by any influence. He was seated at the time, is that correct, seated at that time . He was slightly suspended in a seated position. A copy of this transcript, of this statement will be posted on the Sheriffs Office press page at the conclusion of this press conference so that way you have a copy of it. Can you explain what lividity is . Its the pooling of human blood due to gravity. When you pass, your blood is no longer throwing through your remains. What happens is, it stops flowing and pools due to gravity and settles. There are signs and studies that indicate after a certain period of time when that settling is locked in. During early stages, lividity can be adjusted if the remains are removed. The remains are consistent with the position that he was found in what i will say is that she retired to bed. Mr. Williams wife retired prior to mr. Williams into a room in the home. It is not known when mr. Williams retired for the evening but he went to a different room in the home. Hes been treated for depression. Outside of that, at this time, we have some concerns about hippa protections so were a little slightly prohibited getting into future aspects until the investigation is completed. We still have people we want to speak with so there is some information we want to withhold. Somebody over here, a male . Yes, maam. What information did you get from your investigation and your examination . With what respect do you mean . With his health before the suicide. Any other findings from the forensic examination specific to his health will be addressed at the future press conference. That will all come to light at the future press conference. At this time, its not a factor of what were going to discuss relevant to what our findings were today. You said that he was fully clothed. Was he wearing the same cloths that he had been wearing previously . What i said was he was clothed. I didnt say fully clothed. He had cloths on and thats how were going to address this at this point until the press conference is concluded. They were acute superficial. Acute is recent. Do you have an estimate as to when he died . When you say can you explain are you talking about the night superficial wounds were not the preliminary cause of death. The preliminary cause of death is asphyxia due to hanging. And then do you have an estimated time of when he may have died . The investigation is ongoing. Unfortunately, we still have to surmise, based on things that were going to look at, lividity, rigors, to try to come up with a generalized idea of when he passed. Did he leave a note . That will be released when the future press conference is concluded. Were there any signs im sorry. I didnt hear you. When you interviewed the family, did they reveal any troubling signs with robin . Im not going to get into our interviews and such because we have more to conduct and we want to be able to have untainted information from individuals we may speak with versus saying what we may already know from those interviews. One second. Dr. Joseph cohen is the chief forensic pathologist for the marin county Sheriffs Office. How many superficial wounds were there . Was he on the floor or in a chair . He was not in the chair. He was suspended, as i indicated, from the belt, which was wedged between the door and the door frame in a seated position slightly suspended off the ground. At this time, i dont have that information but to my knowledge we have not been to the home for previous contacts. Hold on. One sec. How many superficial wounds were there . We are not releasing that information other than saying at this time they are superficial in nature only. The autopsy was conducted in napa county primarily due to the marin county Sheriffs Office does not possess a government morgue facility. We have a private contract with a local mortuary who the facilities are up to par with the government morgue but its not a government facility and due to security concerns and the opportunity to ensure that we want to preclude images and other things, what may have occurred in that exam Going Forward, we wanted to use a facility that was secure. Ive already addressed that. Where were the superficial wounds . As i said, on the left side of his wrist. Were not getting into specific questions like that. Those questions can be asked at the future press conference. Was there anybody else in the house . His personal assistant found him. His wife went to sleep at 10 30 p. M. The prior evening. What about the assistant . Were not releasing that information at this time. Who do you believe was in the home when mr. Williams correct. Personal assistant arrived . Correct. Were the children at home at the time . As this gentleman just asked, the only people we believe at this time to be in the home was mr. Williams and mr. Williams wife. Was there a note left at the scene . Ive already answered about the note. Were not discussing that at this time. You said the wife left. When did she return . Mr. Williams wife returned shortly after Sheriffs Office personnel arrived on scene and Fire Department personnel arrived on scene. She was aware of his passing at a very early time in this incident. Was it just coincidental that she returned at that time . Im not going to get into those specifics at this time. Im going to take about five more questions and then were going to move on. So number one here . Its a reasonable summation that he passed between 10 30 p. M. When he was last seen alive and 12 00 when the Fire Department arrived on scene. Well be working on trying to narrow that down if its possible. 12 00 noon . Correct. Two . Can you give more detail on the room where he was found . No, sir. Not at this time. It was inside the home at 95 st. Thomas. What was he doing when his wife went to bed . What exactly are you all looking for and who are you hoping to speak with Going Forward . We want to in an investigation thats ongoing, although the primary preliminary indication right now in this case is a suicide, we want to be th thorough to make sure that were not overlooking something that is critical in the case. Were going to continue to review individuals who may have information thats pertinent to our case, medical information, medical history. Its a comprehensive standard coroners case. Mr. Williams case is consistent with any case that we conduct in marin county. Due to notoriety to mr. Williams, thats why you are all here today. We will at the final conclusion of the excuse me. Yes. At the final press conference, we will make that final determination. But at this time, it is our indication that it is a suicide due to asphyxia due to hanging. As i said, its preliminary. What happens next with the body . Im not going to release that information as to mr. What williams may have been doing at 10 30 last night when she went to bed. She went to bed and then she left the home again and then returned to the home . Yes. She went to bed at approximately 10 30 p. M. She then left the home in the morning, as i indicated, and then she returned to the home once mr. Williams was determined to be deceased. Do you know when she left the home . I already stated that. It will be in the written statement. This woman here . Funeral arrangements are a decision of the family and we are we are not going to comment on what the familys decisions are as to who they are using, how thats going to proceed. What i can tell su that the remains are no longer at the napa county Sheriffs Office and thats a family issue and were not at liberty to release that information. Have you confiscated any of his computers or phones . Last question. Actually, one question after this. He was in a room in the home. In a bedroom . He was in a room in the home. Thats all were going to say. Last question . Is it possible this was not an intentional suicide but an accidental suicide . Was there anything else involved in this . Suicide by definition is an intentional act which cannot be an accidental act. Last question over here. [ inaudible ]. The best way to describe his position when we found him is to in essence say he was in a seated position suspended slightly above the ground. What that means is, his body is in a position that looks like hes sitting in a chair, slightly off the ground, suspended from the belt that was wedged between the door and the door frame that was placed around his neck. Okay. Thats all we have for today. Any further updates in the interim will be issued to marinsheriff. Org on the press page. When we have a final discovery summary to release, that will be through a press conference. We will provide 24hours notice for that press conference. I will respond to ecmails. I ask for your patience. I am looking at them and will respond to them in time. Do you have any idea when that will be, the final several weeks. Toxicology takes a minimum of two to six weeks and we need all of the Toxicology Studies concluded. Thank you for your time. Have a good day. All right. Youve been listening to pretty gruesome, grim details of the final moment of Robin Williams life. Its tough to wrap your head around someone who has so brightened the screen and the stage for decades and now to hear, according to investigators, marin county, california, he was found essentially hanging. He it was asphyxia due to hanging, found suspended it sounds like above the floor with a belt wrapped around his neck and attached to a nearby closet. Also, we just learned there was a small pocket knife found near his body with what appeared to be dried blood. Whether it was the blood of Robin Williams or not, they cannot conclusively say but he had superficial wounds to his wrist. So lets talk about this with dr. John mann, a suicide researcher who is joining me here. Just you and i listening to the investigator, first things first, when you hear that it was death by hanging, asphyxia due to hanging, you were telling me that is the most common method of suicide. That is true for most of the world, most of the western world. But in the united states, death by gunshot is the method of suicide is the commonest suicide. Half of the suicides in the u. S. , 20,000 a year, die by gunshot selfinflicted. In this case we know it was hanging and your second observation, the fact that potentially with a pocket knife unsuccessful attempts using a belt, not having a rope, not necessarily showing premeditation. A lot of thought going into it. Yes. It sounds like, from the description, that he didnt really plan or prepare for this for very long at all. It was probably a relatively spontaneous idea. He wasnt sure what to do and so he used whatever methods were at hand but he was clearly determined. Dr. Mann, can you help us understand how someone so beloved, hearing from himself and friends through the years definitely battling depression, bipolar disorder, addiction issues but so loved, so successful, children, a wife, what takings you to that final moment of taking your own life . Yes, its terribly tragic but what happens is, the person has been suffering from depression often experiences a kind of a pain, a psychological pain due to the depression. Patients will say that pain is worse than any physical pain theyve had. Theyd rather have the physical pain than the psychological pain of depression. So the person battling this illness and its something inside. Its hard for people around them to appreciate just how difficult it is. And sometimes and maybe too often they use alcohol to try and get some relief but the alcohol is a twoedge sword. What you really need is good treatment for the depression. But not everybody who suffers from depression is at risk for suicide. Theres a subgroup of people that are at risk and you cant see that looking at them. You can often tell by talking to them. The pain is more severe. They feel more pessimistic and hopeless about ever getting better. The reason for living that they talk about is fewer and less compelling than it is for other people. Is that what just over wewhe a person, you are overburdened with a a sense of failure . Is that what it is . The depression is not a sense of failure. Its a sense of stress and pain and suffering and the person needs relief from it and if they dont think they are going to get better and they cant stand it any longer, they begin to think life isnt worth living this way. Then, even though they have all this, a lot of people will just hang on because of religion, because of their family, because of their kids. They dont want to let people down. And so they just put up with it and suffer for longer. But if you throw other things into the equation, like taking some alcohol or Something Like that, that can change the way you see the world and the way you feel and the way you act and the decisions that you might act. I think we need to stay on this because this is such an issue just hearing from you on twitter through the day today, so many people are touched, either suffering from depression themselves, knowing someone who has. You can get help. Let me put this phone number up on the screen. The National Suicide prevention lifeline. 18002738255. Dr. John mann, thank you very much. Remember, the money youre donating is going directly to homeless people. Fuel injected lets bring in a great, old friend of Robin Williams. Founder of comic relief. Bob, welcome. Im so sorry for the loss of your dear friend. Well go ahead. Just amazing. You saw the clip with Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal. I founded comic relief with robin, billy, and whoopi. People know him as a comedian and dramatic actor and was also a real humanitarian which makes it more shocking. But in a way, ive got to tell you, theres a long history of depression with comedians to begin with and comedians themselves talk about this. Why is that . Well, ill tell you exactly why. Harold ramus who passed just recently, he was one of the original Board Members of comic relief and harold believed very much that the comedian, when you trace the standup comedian back, at one point he was the class clown. And if you trace the class clown back either further than that, that you will find that theres a history of depression in the family and usually with the mother. The mothers usually depressed. I understand this was the case, also, with robin. And because the mother is depressed, the young boy tries to cheer mom up, tries to be a clown. Life back at home and dealing with family issues and then fast forward to someone like Robin Williams, right . And you had said before and its hard for us i say us us fans. You knew the guy, loved the guy but you were saying if you were in an elevator and it was just the two of you, he wouldnt talk. But the second a second or third person came around, he was alive. He was a true performer. Robin had no social skills whatsoever. I knew robin for over 35 years. And yet he could not handle being oneonone with a person. Even you . Oh, yeah, even me. It would be like speaking with a total stranger in an elevator. It was so odd. But if another person came in, then all of a sudden you were an audience and robin could become alive. Thats why he was so good at what his psychological imperative in life had to be to perform. This is why he was so good at it. And, you know, he was bipolar and, of course, when you get in a situation, his highs were highs and, unfortunately, his lows were really low. So as a dear friend thats known him for pa yea35 years, y billy, whoopi, do you just know as part of the Robin Williams inner circle how he is oneonone and you dealt with him accordingly . You didnt know it was going to lead to this. Comedy is there to kind of relieve the stress and tension. Thats why its there. We have a line in comedy saying, there are no jokes. You know, and the comedians are very, very serious when they are many of them when they are not on stage. Very different kind of people. In robins case, he was very much that loner until another person came in the room. Two people. It had to be at least two people and then hed Start Performing and hed be fine. I could see how this would happen in the middle of the night, him alone, no audience and just crashing, crashing. And let alone the alcohol problem. You know, weve heard robins been very honest about going into rehab and joking about it and his depression. I think, in a way, brooke, this is one of the reasons why we are really shocked about this. Because you thought, oh, robins going through that but hes handling it, obviously, because hes talking about it. One would think its fixed but not, sadly. No. Bob, can i keep you around . Sure. Absolutely. I know you have a great story about Robin Williams back to being on stage. With andy kaufman, yes. Well be right back. Hang on. Those are the things i miss. The little idiosyncrasies. Those are the things i miss the most. Otection rinse. It helps you escape the scrape. Otection rinse. Moderate to severe is tough, but ive managed. I got to be pretty good at managing my symptoms, except that managing my symptoms was all i was doing. When i finally told my doctor, he said my crohns was not under control. He said humira is for adults like me who have tried other medications but still experience the symptoms of moderate to severe crohns disease. And that in clinical studies, the majority of patients on humira saw significant symptom relief. And many achieved remission. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Dont start humira if you have an infection. If youre still just managing your symptoms, ask your gastroenterologist about humira. With humira, remission is possible. As we are dedicating this entire hour to the life of Robin Williams and calling awareness to Suicide Prevention and depression, bob zmuda is back with me. He knew Robin Williams for 35plus years. He founded comic relief fundraisers to help the needy and homeless. Bob, you wrote for andy kaufman, right . Yes, i was Andy Kaufmans writer for ten years and, once again, andy being a comedian, andy himself suffered from psychological conditions. One in kaufmans case was personality disorder and andy would become a totally different person for three or four days. Thats incredible. He had a different car he drove. Its really quite interesting to see the minds of the comedians. What i was saying about robin is when people watched comic relief from Robin Williams and Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg, they were the anchor of our show. They would put in time, days, weeks rehearsing this show and then, of course, rehearsing it life, mainly on hbo. But also in their off time, they would go to homeless shelters themselves. I remember the first time we took robin to a shelter in downtown l. A. , skid row, a very scary shelter. And it was the first time that i saw robin lost for words. He got in front of that crowd of homeless families and he was in shock and he couldnt say anything. Why is that, do you think . He was taken in by this mass of humanity and it shocked him. It was a very scary shelter. And we went back to the Directors Office back the director came out and said, robin, we thought you were going to perform or something. He said, oh, it just seemed not like right to do. He said, no, no, no. These people need it more than anyone. Robin went back and it was 20 minutes and killed and killed. But he needed that approval of it. You know, another thing that happened on comic relief, because of comic relief, i got a call from the producer bill cates and he used to produce the emmys, Academy Awards. He saw robin and whoopi and billy on comic relief and thats why he got the idea to use billy and whoopi to host the Academy Awards and emmys because he saw that they could do the hosting job. But you could never use Robin Williams for that. He would never get an award ou. Whoopi gets behind him and puts his hand over his mouth. Im sorry you lost a friend. The world is sorry. Were still reeling. Bob zmuda, thank you for coming on and sharing stories and makes us laugh in the process. Thank you very much. Thank you. Coming up next, a Robin Williams story you may never forget. The actor secretly flew himself to the home of a little girl who was dying of brain cancer. It was her last wish to meet mrs. Doubtfire. Including a chilling phone call robin received while visiting his daughter. As youve been hearing all these different stories throughout the day, when Robin Williams entered a room, his talent took over the space. But hes also he was also excellent at making you feel like you were the only one in the room. And the family of a dying girl knows exactly what im talking about. I want you to take a look at these pictures, one of Jessica Coles last wishes was to meet the man, Robin Williams, who mesmerized her in his star turn mrs. Doubtfire. This occurred in 2004. They set up a flight for her to visit the comedian. But at that point, she was too weak from her brain tumor. So what did Robin Williams do . He flew to her and he spent more than four hours by her side. She died just a couple weeks after that visit. And so joining me now, jessicas father, mark cole. Mark, welcome. Hi. Thank you. So lets talk about your daughter. So jessica loved Robin Williams after watching mrs. Doubtfire, according to you, hundreds of times. At least. At least a hundred. At least. When she saw him in person, she didnt know who he was, right . Thats correct. She she was a little disoriented at that point with extra fluid on her brain but it was a little out of place for her, also, seeing Robin Williams walk into our home and she was confused when he first came in. Until he did mrs. Doubtfire . Yeah. And then he started his mrs. Doubtfire imitation and then she figured it out pretty quickly. The two of them spent hours together. He specifically asked no camera be there. He didnt want publicity over this. Can you tell me in those couple of hours what they did . What do you remember from that time . Yeah. They called us like they only gave us 24 hours notice and wanted only immediate family, my wife then and our older daughter tonya and my mother was aware. They came in and watched carolina panther football and jessica loved to play a card game called secret seven. So she had to teach robin how to play that and beat him at that. That a girl. Just hung out. So while they were playing cards and watching the carolina panthers, the phone rank and Robin Williams picked up his phone and who was on the other end of the phone . I believe it was his wife. And she told him what . That his friend Christopher Reeves had passed away. And so then he apologized for cutting the visit short, although he had been there for, you know, all afternoon and i believe he left our home and went to new york to be with the reeves family. So it was by your daughters side that he got that fateful phone call. She had gone to juilliard together. They made this pact, if one of you make it is before me, youve got to help me with that. Jessica passed away a couple of weeks after the visit and so afterwards, Robin Williams planted a tree in her honor and he also sent you a gift, sir . He did. He sent me some wine. I had showed him my wine collection and so he did send me six bottles of wine from his winery. And how did you take the news of his passing . I was really upset. I cant tell you how much it meant to our family to have him bring his resources and take his time and come out and spend that time with jessica and very sad that that happened and obviously brought back a lot of tough memories that i have from 2004.
